Dead Waldorf XTk Power Fix

A little bit ago my Waldorf XTk bit the dust. After some research on the Waldorf User list and forums I thought the problem might be with a faulty power supply. The XTk uses a line-lump supply mounted inside its case. It's very similar to a standard laptop power adapter. Well, unfortunately, in my case it turned out to be fine which meant the problem was further up the chain.  I was a bit worried the synth was fried. Fortunately I'm friends with Scott Rise of Divsion 6.  He took a look, found the problem and sure enough fixed it.  Thank you Scott!  It turned out to be the transient voltage suppressor diode the green arrow is pointing to in the image.  Scott replaced it and the XTk fired right up.  You can find the details on the fix on his MODD3D site here.

Now it should be read for next Halloween.

"19" rackmounable in great condition, includes original power supply.

Excellent working condition, no issues and in great cosmetic condition.

Excellent filter with tons of options, nothing really like it available on the market today. First off, it's fully analog, which is pretty important for a filter, as you can help warm up your digital gear with this. It's got Low Pass, High Pass and Band Pass filter modes. Every parameter is able to be controlled via CC messages through MIDI, so you can run your DAW tracks through this and record your live knob tweaks MIDI signals, then edit those tweaks in your DAW and play those back. I think that feature alone is the best part of this unit. 32 presets can be saved to the unit, which is great considering how many parameters there are. The modulation features are very extensive, just read below on that. It's also got a distortion switch which I think adds to the resonance and gives some grit to your sound, really cool for drones.

These units haven't been produced in 10 years and are extremely rare (as are some other similar rack mount effects units from that era, I've been looking for a Filtered Coffee unit for years!)..."

"It sounds great... Everything works except voice 2 & 4 Res encoder.
Not sure what's the issue. It worked fine the last time (2012) I used it.
But when testing out tonight, it has no effect on that voice. (unless I wiggle the encoders)
It could be cold solder joints. ?? Possibly an easy fix.
Even so, this synth sounds amazing.
Analog, water-like bubbles from the LFO to VCF...
Monster growls in unison mode...
It's a super - extremely versatile - synthesizer.
MIDI control.. No CV option."

"The Trigger Riot triggers everything, the drums, the envelopes, the Z8000 sequencers, the Z8000 direction. The 808/909 drums goes through Clarky CGS grinder and then through Cwejman ring mod controlled by the Z8000. The Piston Honda and Z3000 both are controlled by the Z8000."

And an update on the status of the upcoming Trigger Riot:

"Hey all, yes it's May and I wish i had better news, but the Riots are still in assembly and not yet ready to ship. The good news is that the delay gave us more time to add features! Right now we are adding DinSync both in and out so the Riot can either be a master or slave to xox machines. We also added preset looping, this thing just gets deeper and deeper. The price is not decided yet but will most likely be $500, hopefully we don't have any surprises when we get the bill from the assembly house. So hold on just a bit more, there will be a riot soon."

"Moog Inducted into National Inventors Hall of Fame for Patent No 3475623, The Moog Ladder Filter

ASHEVILLE, NC – May 1, 2013 – Moog Music is proud to announce that today its founder Dr. Robert Moog will be posthumously inducted in to the United States Patent and Trademark Office National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Dr. Moog is being awarded this honor for Patent No. 3475623, more commonly known to Moog fans as the Moog Ladder Filter. Moog Music, which will be hosting Moogfest, its annual celebration of the innovative spirit of Dr. Moog on April 25th-27th 2014, has created a video featuring Moog hardware engineer Rick Shaich discussing the importance and innovation of this creation. The video can be seen here: http://www.moogmusic.com/sight-and-sound/product_demo/moog-ladder-filter

In the video, Shaich discusses the Ladder Filter, the first Voltage Controlled Filter, which is the heart and soul of the Moog modular synthesizers of the 60s, the Legendary Minimoog of the 70's, and is still the same filter topology used in all Moog Synthesizers to this day. The Ladder Filter is an essential element of the massive, thick sound for which Moog instruments are renowned.

To celebrate this historic occasion Moog Music is reissuing the Moog Ladder Filter Tee, which is now available for pre-order and will ship with a free poster commemorating Bob Moog's induction to the National Inventors Hall of Fame."

Hohner Basset a.k.a. Hohner Bass Video Demo

Published on Apr 19, 2013 TheLaboratoryofSound·1 video

"When this 50 year old baby arrived in my workshop [http://www.labofsound.com/en] it didn't make any sound. It had several problems, among which a blown transformer. I am very glad that I was able to revive this wonderful piece of history that is considered the first solid-state (transistorized) bass synth. Its sound palette is very simple but effective. When you play this baby even at reasonable levels, things will start to shake around you, the bass is that intense. Because there is little info on the web and in particular on Youtube I thought it would be nice to post a little video of me improvising on this little beast from the sixties. You will not be able to hear the sine bass on your laptop speakers, you'll need studio monitors to hear this low bass sound. Enjoy."

These come up on eBay now and then. There's actually one listed here. It's great to see video and hear what one actually sounds like.

This synth patch is inspired by Lord Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra, a spinning disk
like weapon crafted by a piece of The Sun (Surya). This divine weapon is used
for the ultimate destruction of an enemy. The word Sudarshana is derived from
two Sanskrit words - Su (Sanskrit) meaning "divine" and Darshana (sanskrit)
meaning "vision". Hence, the word Sudarshana collectively means
"vision of which is auspicious".

Use this patch with your favorite Oscillators and effects. I used a combo of Anti & Uncle OSC, Piston Honda and a BLTZFM OSC. The effects were handled by the ZDSP w/ Reverb HP LP program."

Everything works (except the Glide function mentioned below) and unit is in great cosmetic condition as you can see by the pictures, it comes with a 1/4" ply Case and an Owners / Service manual. This set of pedals was professionally serviced 7 yrs ago and with the exception of being pulled out for a couple of recording sessions has spent all of it's time in the case in my Studio and aside from a recent contact cleaning and general line check this unit hasn't seen the light of day. The GLIDE function has stopped working (a feature I never used anyway) and I'm sure that a proper bench test & calibration will solve that problem... at this time everything else is working perfectly."

"From the Gnome creator...

"'The Gnome started out as an instrument that wasn't going to do anything more than make the sound of wind - not like a flute, but real wind. Ssssshhhhew. That kind of wind, which could be played with a little vinyl controller strip that was part of it. The Gnome was one of those things that just grew. After the instrument that did the wind sound was done, it became pretty apparent that you could stick other components in there and essentially come up with a small synthesizer, a thing that captured the central ideas of voltage-controlled synthesis at the time - Oscillators, filters, transient generators, and so on - but stripped down to the essentials or the core. It was an attempt to get rid of that keyboard that was always by far the single most expensive part of anything we made, by order of magnitude or more.'"

The Gnome uses 3 9-volt batteries to operate. Approximately 3000 of these kits were produced by PAIA."
