"This is a MidiBox SID synthesizer in fantastic condition and barely used. If you like chip tunes or the old Commodore 64 music, then this is for you. If you are into sampling this unit offers endless possibilities. I believe that it has 8 SID chips on board. I bought this with the intention of sampling it like crazy but life has taken a very different direction for me and I'm selling all my gear..."

Spectral Eye Pro

iTunes:
Secret Base Design

"Spectral Eye Pro is an enhanced version of our free app, Spectral Eye. If you are unfamiliar with the app, we suggest trying Spectral Eye first, to make sure that this is what you need. If you like the free version, you can upgrade to the paid version later!
*** Pro version on sale until May 6th, 2013 ***

Spectral Eye Pro analyzes incoming audio signals to extract the underlying frequencies. Most sounds are built up from a variety of sine waves; a simple whistle might be a single wave, while a guitar, piano, or the human voice have many waves added together.

By using a Fast Fourier Transform, sound can be decomposed into each frequency. Normally, this information is displayed on a chart, and there are number of excellent apps that do exactly this. Spectral Eye Pro rearranges the FFT into a spiral, so that frequencies that are an octave apart are lined up as rays from the center of the display. The strength of each frequency is represented by the size of a red circle.

Play music, and Spectral Eye Pro will reveal the frequencies. For a guitar, it's easy to see that in addition to the root frequency of a note, there are also a number of harmonic frequencies -- and these change based on the strings used, the pickups, and the amplification system. It's the frequencies present in the notes that make a Telecaster sound different from a Les Paul, and a piano different from a trumpet. Play an instrument, music from your iTunes library, or have it listen to whatever sounds are nearby -- the display is fun to watch.

If you're interested in understanding the nature of sound, use Spectral Eye to get a better view. There is a free version of this app, which was created as a utility used in the development in other Secret Base Design apps.

The Pro version supports both input, filter, and output slots on Audiobus, so that you can directly analyze the freqencies produced by other synthesizer apps. For synthesists looking to create new sounds, or understand what they are hearing, Spectral Eye is an invaluable too.

The pro version also supports Virtual and Core MIDI; you can see the frequencies of sounds around you, and then play along with them using the novel Spectral Eye interface. If you don't have perfect pitch, you can use Spectral Eye to transcribe melodies that you hear or compose on your own.

*** Note -- we cannot respond directly to reviews in iTunes. If you have trouble with the app, please contact us by email. To directly analyze audio from an MP3 file, you can use an app which imports audio, and then streams it over Audiobus. Audioshare is one such app, and we recommend it highly."

No, it is not as technical as some of the other legendary synth books, but the thing I like about it is that it was put together and published by a fellow synthesizer afficianado, Martin Newcomb in 1994. It shows the great interest and passion in electronic music instruments/synthesizers that the rest of us have as well. It is a book that is full of synthesizer eye candy that is sure to make the most hard to please drool with with envy. I am sure that after flipping through this book, you will likely go out and start looking for your next synth. Definitely a book for the synthesizer library for the serious electronic musician..."

Atomic Shadow - Birthday On Mars

Birthday On Mars from Atomic Shadow on Vimeo.

"This semi-improvised piece is recorded live, in one take, and features the MU format synth and the EMW200/300 cross-patched. The new DotCom S/H module is playing the cello like sound from the DDVCO. The EMW is providing filter filter modulation and some counter melodies from the sequencer and S/H section. I must also point out the new STG Soundlabs mixer and say that Eric's claims about the sound are absolutely true. Everything I feed through it sounds better coming out than going in. Off camera there are some effects units that are being controlled by hand (and foot) to process the sine wave from the small Eico signal generator."

via Rod Mitchell (Atomic Shadow) on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge

Update via Rod: "I probably should have mentioned that it's Delia Derbyshire"s birthday today and Mrs. Shadow's birthday tomorrow. That was part of the inspiration for the title."

AMSynths May 2013 Newsletter - AM8044 Cascade VCF &VCA & More

"Newsletter May 2013
Latest News
Spring has arrived at last in the UK with at least one sunny day! At AMSynths we have been busy launching new modules and catching up on the backlog of reservations. Here is the latest news, check our web site here:

Module Plans
The popular AM8012, AM8075, AM8071 and AM8109 filter modules are in production and shipping to customers, along with the AM8328 Miarge Filter which we launched in January. The AM8044 VCF and VCA has now been launched with stock in the webstore. This module uses the SSM2044 chip to produce a very smooth filter and a simple VCA has been added after the VCF, which can either be used as a final level control or a 10V positive going envelope generator can be patched in.

The Dual ADSR AM8140 is the next module to go into production during May, along with the AM8060SE Dual State Variable Filter - with plenty of back orders to fill. The testing of the AM8027 Dual VCO has completed and the next stage is to build some production versions in June before we officially release the module for customer shipments.

PCB's and Panels
We launched PCB's and panels for customers that wish to build their own modules back in March, and they are proving very popular. We have a growing inventory in the web store, covering most of the Eurorack range. We have online Project Notes with BOM's and guidance on building and setting up.

E-mu Modular
One of the AMSynths projects for this year is to build an E-mu Systems Analog Modular synthesizer using panels from Exclusively Analogue, with some original E-mu PCB's and some re-designs that I have completed. You can read more about the project as it progresses over the next few months on our Blog."

AKAI MPC-60II SN 90125-00144

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"For sale is this used Akai MPC-60II. The MPC-60II is the music production studio that has single-handedly taken over the Rap and R&B music genres as the main instrument of Hip Hop production. Designed by Roger Linn (Linn Drum), the MPC-60 is a one-box-does-it-all sequencer-sampler workstation. This particular example, serial number 99125-00144 works great and is the perfect addition to any professional or home studio.

The built-in sequencer is very complete and professional. There are 99 tracks per sequence, 99 patterns, and 99 sequences that can be created, edited and stored in the MPC-60II with ease. Most artists create their patterns in real-time adding drum parts to a beat-loop spontaneously creating a groove that captures the vibe. These patterns are varied and chained into a sequence. Full MIDI, SMPTE and various other forms of external control prepare the MPC-60 for any studio situation.

The Sampler section is lo-fi but highly respectable. Its 12-bit sampling at 40KHz is pretty good. Sample editing, looping and transforming is simple to do. And finally, there’s even a built-in drum machine for extra groove! Finally, the 18 voices of polyphony should be plenty of room for anyone who wants to create Hip Hop on the machine of professional artists worldwide including Apollo 440, BT, Jean-Michel Jarre, Jimmy Edgar, DJ Shadow, Jermaine Dupri, and A Guy Called Gerald.

The main differences between the original MPC-60 and the MKII was the casing and a head-phone jack but either machine is still very useful for today’s aspiring musicians.

This particular example is in used condition and good working condition and comes with an IEC power cable. The MPC is missing 5 mounting screws, though is structurally intact. As can be seen in the photos, the "soft key 1" and "space" buttons display serious wear, and there are visible scratches on the backlit LED panel. Though the unit works, I suggest having a tech do a fundamental service to bring it back up to studio-ready shape."

Roland CV Sequencer CMU-800 with Apple IIe

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction
This is a fairly unique opportunity to get hold of a Roland CMU-800, and the computer required to run it, with an easy to use and space saving SD card floppy disk system, without having to spend months/years trying to put your own set-up together. Buy it all in one go and take all the ball ache out of the equation. Hook it up to your CV/Gate synths and start making music now.

Mint condition and working Roland CMU-800 8 channel CV/Gate Sequencer and manual, with built in 7 voice analogue drum machine supposedly similar to the TR-606.(I actually prefer the CMU's drums as they seem cleaner and snappier to me than the 606.The hats are also better in my opinion.

Also a very basic unfiltered 6 voice digitally generated synthesiser.(Actually quite useful for testing out compositions without having to fire up your precious vintage synths, and I'm sure I can hear these sounds on Doris Norton's Personal Computer album)The interface card is a clone I built myself and it works exactly as the original.

Plus it comes with an Apple IIe personal computer (rebuilt power supply)with SDISK II SD card floppy disk drive, so no bulky annoying 5.25" floppy disks or drives required.Working and in very good condition for it's age. I will supply this with 5 SD cards.

THE SOFTWARE LOADS UP FROM SD CARD AUTOMATICALLY ON POWER UP AND LOADS IN 8 SECONDS.
You treat each SD card as if they were 1 floppy disk. You use 1 SD card to load up the Sequencer, then you change SD cards and use another one for loading/saving your songs. Easy. And also easy to archive all your work. Just put the SD card in your computer and copy the file somewhere safe.Double easy.
You can also do the bulk of your programming on a PC based Apple II emulator(no sound or CV/Gate control possible of course) and then load that file up into the real thing for fine tuning and to see how it sounds.
(I may consider offering some spare parts(1 motherboard for spare chips/disk interface card and more) with this Apple IIe if you turn out to be a cool customer. This is totally at my discretion and is not guaranteed or offered as part of this auction.Contact me if you are interested in this proposition)

Also comes with a handy little 10" composite/vga monitor which is plenty big enough to work on and doesn't take up much room. This has a scratch on the front of the screen but it doesn't cause any problems during use of the sequencer software. This also comes with it's own power supply and composite lead.

Operation
If you build a complete song from start to finish then there are no problems that I have found, however, the loop function in the software can sound a little sluggish(at least to my ears) I'm guessing that this is because it takes time for the old 6502 to get back to bar 1 (a sloppy coded IRQ I suppose). Just put together a song by using the repeat command to repeat as many steps as is required (easy to do, and what this was really designed to for(the centre of your CV studio)).You also do the same for the internal rhythm channel if you are using that. That's about it for old school problems.(not a problem if you actually write a complete score)..."
