IMPREC Podcast #3- "The Synthcast" with Alessandro Cortini & More

"May 10th 2013
Good afternoon friends,

We are pleased to announce the newest podcast from Important Records:

Summary:

IMPREC podcast #3- "The Synthcast"

This weeks show will focus on the role of the analog synthesizer as a creative tool in the production of electronic music, modern composition, and sound art. This podcast highlights artists in the Important Records catalog that have made a connection with specific systems or instruments in the analog domain. Some artists have made momentary, inspired connections and managed to capture those results while others have spent decades exploring and mastering their given voltage-controlled instrument.

Each track represented in the podcast brings something unique and challenging to the table. This is not an attempt to fetishize or promote analog synthesis hardware; it is a snapshot of the results that are yielded by careful study, improvisation, and creative approaches to the technology available to artists at a given point in time. Although some may consider analog synthesis an archaic mode of expression, the tracks here attest to the opposite. There are three tracks featuring the EMS Synthi on this podcast but if you expect to hear something akin to "On The Run", well…you're in for a wild ride.

Track Listing:

Alessandro Cortini makes his Important Records debut with the track "Gloria" from the upcoming Forse 1 album. Alessandro created the Forse series of recordings using an original Buchla Music Easel. 2012

Pauline Oliveros- 'A little Noise in the system' (excerpt) from Reverberations (2012) was created on the Moog III modular system at UCSD in 1968.

Eleh- "Indictiva" from the Return LP. Eleh uses a custom Serge Modular. 2009

Jessica Rylan- 'Phantasia' (excerpt) from Interior Designs. Serge Modular feedback patch with home made electronics. 2006

Space Machine (Yamazaki Maso)- "Track D" from Space Machine 3. Maso uses multiple sound sources including the EMS VCS3, Arp Odyssey, Roland System 100M with various echo/tape delays. 2003

Christina Kubisch- 'Ocigam Trazom' from the Intorno al Flauto Magio exhibition, an interpretation of Mozart's opera 'The Magic Flute'. Performed on the EMS Synthi with processed field recordings. 1985

Astro (Hiroshi Hasegawa)- 'Artificial Lake' realized on an EMS Synthi with Tape Delay. From the album 'The Echo From Purple Dawn'. 2008

Eliane Radigue- 'Triptych Pt. 3' created on the ARP 2500 in 1978. From the album 'Triptych'.

We hope you enjoy the podcast and thank you for you continued support."

Elektor Formant Goes Digital with the d-Formant: Digital Formant Synth

This one in via Grant B.  via Elektor

"FORMANT is an analog monophonic synthesizer published in the 70’s from Elektor magazine. It has a modular structure that allows it to be constructed step-by-step and expanded at will. It can be built at home and it is an excellent model to fully understand the operation of subtractive-type synthesizers.

This project presents a completely digital counterpart of the original FORMANT; let’s call it d-FORMANT. The basic idea is to replace the analog voltage that represents a signal with a digital 16-bits serial signal. The modular structure is fully maintained. Even the patching capabilities of the original FORMANT has been kept and the user can connect and disconnect cables while the d-FORMANT is working. All the knobs and switches can be implemented, although this first version of the d-FORMANT has a much simpler (and cheaper) user interface: A LCD, some buttons and a rotary encoder are enough to do the jobs of all the potentiometers and switches of the original FORMANT. The keyboard can be any MIDI device that sends simple “note on” and “note off” commands. The digital output passes through a DAC to produce an analog out.

The next post discuses some basic aspects that govern the entire project, while all the subsequent posts describe each module. Note that the structure of the analog FORMANT has been kept, so there are VCOs, VCF, ADSR and any module of the original design
Implementation

All parts except the DAC are through-hole. This makes the construction of the various modules very easy. The author has handled used the DAC also by hand, making a simple “adaptor”. All modules have been constructed in prototyping boards.

Further work

The design keeps its modular structure allowing expansion and modification. For example, a REVERB module, or a QUITAR FUZZY BOX can be added.

The user interface is very simple. However, its output is in RS232-type format. A possible enhancement could be to implement a user interface that is easier to use, either in hardware, or in software running on another machine (a tablet for example). The obvious benefit of the digital nature of the synthesizer is the existence of already stored sets of parameters.

The synthesizer is monophonic; however it is easier to expand the digital than the analog FORMANT to produce a polyphonic model.

The final design is cheap enough to implement it “just for fun”, and capable enough to have fun!"

Modular Faux Looping Random Sequence

Published on May 10, 2013 chisel316·56 videos

"I call this 'faux' because there is no sequencer or random source anywhere in the patch! I'm using the cross-modulated MFB triangle LFO through the Make Noise Function to create a sequence from the Function's signal output that is then sampled with the Doepfer A-148 S&H module triggered from the MFB square LFO. The output of the S&H is sent to the BL Duo Quantizer and then to the Ardcore which is acting as a CV recorder to capture the notes so they may be repeated. The knob I keep turning on the Ardcore switches between record and playback mode. Hope you enjoy it!

SPARK goes to Hollywood with Arturia’s Hollywood Essentials

"SPARK goes to Hollywood with Arturia’s Hollywood Essentials

GRENOBLE, FRANCE: music software and hardware company Arturia is proud to announce availability of Hollywood Essentials, the latest Expansion Pack for its highly-creative SPARK Creative Drum Machine and SparkLE hybrid hardware/software beat production centres, as of May 7...

Hollywood Essentials adds an amazing array of film-scoring sounds to the SPARK software engine shared by Arturia’s SPARK Creative Drum Machine — which revolutionised hands-on beat-making by cleverly combining TAE® (True Analog Emulation) synthesis, sample playback (with multiple layering modes and post-processing), and physical modelling technologies with the intuitive workflow of a hardware drum machine upon its June 2011 launch — and its smaller sibling, the super-slimline SparkLE, recently released to critical acclaim.

Hollywood hotshot sound designers Larry Hopkins (The Following, Vampire Diaries, Revenge), Alan Howarth (Poltergeist, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Back To The Future II), and Mark Mangini (Die Hard, Star Trek, The Fifth Element) have pooled their considerable creative resources to create Hollywood Essentials. As such, it features an attractive library of 30 ear- catching kits with 480 instruments and 960 patterns ranging from field recordings made in the likes of auto body shops and dentists to ethereal sci-fi soundscapes and action sequence percussion ensembles fit for any adventurous blockbusting Hollywood motion picture!

Whether Hollywood Essentials users choose to score a film with those stimulating sounds or creatively apply them to other musical genres as they see fit, all integrate perfectly with everything those revolutionary SPARK software-sharing SPARK Creative Drum Machine and SparkLE hybrid hardware/software beat production centres have to offer. Performance- enhancing tools like the XY Pad, Looper, and Slicer; 14 high-quality effects; and a speedy step Sequencer come together to make track creation and automation a breeze. Each and every beat and sound can be twisted and tweaked, thanks to the intuitive and creative workflow that lies at the very heart of the SPARK Creative Drum Machine concept.

So why not expand your SPARK Creative Drum Machine or SparkLE’s sonic horizons with Hollywood Essentials and set your sights on conquering the big screen? Maybe the Hans Zimmers of the world should watch their backs... there may soon be some new faces to contend with in Tinsel Town!

Hollywood Essentials requires SPARK Creative Drum Machine Version 1.5 (or higher), and can be purchased and downloaded directly from the Arturia online store (http://www.arturia.com/evolution/en/buy/online-shop.html) for €29.00 EUR/$29.00 USD.

Modular Polyphony

Published on May 9, 2013 pjoris2·26 videos

"I got a Vermona Quad Midi Interface and had already 3 RS-95 VCOs -- so I bought a fourth one to have a try at modular polyphony. Luckily, I had a few quad modules: the Doepfer A-143-1 (Quad) Complex Envelope Generator/LFO which contains 4 AR envelopes, the Doepfer A-138m Matrix Mixer and 4ms CVA Matrix, and finally a QMMG which contains 4 identical low/hi pass gates. Some sound impressions in the video. Don't mind the duff notes and unstructured improvisations here and there, and the VCO tracking which is not the same for all 4 RS-95s. But then, the last is part of the charms of analogue modular polyphony. The 4 channels of the QMMG are also not really identical anyway.

I like the sound of it ! The QMMG is a bit rough at times with high resonance, and I would prefer 4 ADSR envelopes (an A-143-2 maybe). And of course 4 note polyphony is not really impressive, but it will give me some nice pads out of the modular.

The final patch was:

Midi-keyboard to Vermona Quad Midi Interface

Gate Out to Doepfer A-143-1 (Quad) Complex Envelope Generator/LFO to Doepfer A-138m Matrix Mixer (to be able to determine the amount of envelope on the low-pass gates) to Make Noise QMMG CV (Frequency) Inputs

1 V/Oct Out to 4x Analogue Systems RS-95 VCO to Saw or Pulse Out to QMMG Audio Inputs to 4ms CVA Matrix (to avoid overloading the Azimuth and to do the placement of the 4 voices in the stereo field; I didn't seem to put much in the centre of the stereofield however) to Intellijel Azimuth II (these last two not really needed, I could just as wel have fed the 4 channels into the mixing desk directly)

Some LFOs to the Pulse Width CV inputs of the RS-95s. The RS-95 are really nice sounding VCOs by the way. No effects, and still sounding nice and full - the polyphonic modular does not sound bad at all imho ..."
