New Sponsor Shout Out! - THONK & Announcing The New 258J Analog Oscillator

I just wanted to give a shout out to a relatively new sponsor of the site, THONK! You might have noticed their banner on the right in the Manufactuers section. They offer DIY panels, PCBs, kits, knobs and lots more. Be sure to check out their website to see what they have to offer. They just announced the 258J Analog Oscillator as the first part of this year's limited edition 'J3RK PROJ3KT 2013' series. THONK is also a sponsor of the Tokyo Festival of Modular posted earlier.

DIY

"A test of a few devices I have that are all DIY

Main sequence is an Anushri By Mutable instruments , the drums are also the Anushri, but I configured them to run on a different MIDI channel to take advantage of the X0X style sequencing

The filter sweeps and echo are by Little dieter by d-machinery, its a control unit for a Doepfer A100 diy analogue synth, its my noob eurorack module. The LD output is running through a Mutable instruments Shruthi1 which has a Yellow magic filter board ( clone of the korg MS20 ) with a pt2399 delay chip, so I was using t mostly as a delay/echo

It was a lot of fun goofing around, using my big toe to move the arpeggio up and down octaves and running out of hands to twiddle the settings, but it was still fun like I said!"

Update via dude163 in the comments: "D-Machinery now have a website with the Little Dieter available as a kit

"In addition to basic waveforms: saw, triangle and square, there is a saw/square combination wave. Pulse width modulation is also available on all of these waveforms for an interesting effect. I'm pretty sure the AX60 is the only synth with this feature. Feel free to comment if you know of other synths with this capability."

It was an invention of the Russian physicist Leon Theremin around 1930. MTI AUTO ORCHESTRA AO-1

via this auction

"First and foremost, the drum machine section of the unit DOES FUNCTION along with the tempo and volume knobs, every rhythm button, the variation switch and all 'break' buttons, allowing you to cancel different drum hits while the rhythm is playing. HOWEVER, there is a hum that drones, whether or not the rhythm is playing, when the 'drum' on/off button is pressed. I am not sure what is causing this hum. It does come from all three outputs (MAIN, BASS and STRINGS). This hum does NOT sound when the BASS, CHORDS or STRINGS on/off buttons are pressed. However, to my knowledge, you need the MTI footboard accessory to use the BASS, CHORDS or STRINGS function. As a sidenote and a warning, the MTI Auto Orchestra 16R accessories (footboard and volume pedal) are NOT compatible with the AO-1. Although, a youtube search will lead to certain homemade electronics guys that can build MTI keyboard accessories..." via the Strangler in the comments of this post.

korg dw 6000 vintage analogue synthesizer

Published on May 12, 2013 orangecoals·27 videos

"very underrated synthesizer - the presets are quite 80's trying to do DX7 of the time ---but with the correct programming can sound huge fat and very vintage analogue --- I prefer it to the similar Rolands ---i.e. juno and jx3p. The resonant VCF filter is awesome and very expressive. No external effects ---just the pure sound of the korg---sometimes using the stereo chorous for sting like sounds --I find a mono out with no chorous best for punchy bass like sounds"

Kilpatrick K4815 Pattern Generator

Published on May 12, 2013

"Kilpatrick K4815 is a Pattern Generator that works with a 8x8 matrix: each ligthed dot corresponds to a CV note and a Gate or a couple of CVs; direction of crawling, visual/CV pattern, range and crawl speed can be set by musician. On this - pretty static - video, K4815 drives a pair of A-111 oscillators by Doepfer, filtered with Makenoise filter and MFB envelopes. No Art on this video: just flickering light on 8x8 matrix and on/off notes :-)"

Voice of Saturn Sequencer - Endif Style

Uploaded on Jul 12, 2008 cephal0p0d·59 videos
One more video featuring the Voice of Saturn Sequencer sequencing the MFOS Sound Lab Ultimate.

"My build of the VoS sequencer.
Bought the PCB, had most of the parts already.

They also sell varying levels of kits, or prebuilt, so whatever your skill/interest level, a VoS is within reach.
http://www.curiousinventor.com/kits/v...

Instead of pots and knobs I used some sliders I had lying around. Upgraded the LEDs to some big fat obnoxious blue ones I'd been using for throwies and such. Case used to house the firing controls to an MX missile.

Face plate is 1/8 inch aluminum stock from some Amazon seller. Small Parts I think. Anyway. Laid it out on the back side, drilled out the pilot holes with a 2mm bit, then went larger as needed. Filed down all the rough edges, then sanded it all down til it was 1200 grit smooth and gave it 3 coats of glossy clear coat. Looks nice.

Used a router attachment on my Dremel to do the slider holes. They're rough, but they work. Cleaned them up with some files. Next time I do it on a sub-plate and just cut one big hole. Pots and knobs are soo much easier. =P

Mounted the PCB to the face plate with 1 inch standoffs. Battery holder wound up on the plate too. I went so far as to drill holes for them on the bottom of the case, then realized that this would *suck* when it came time to change out the batteries, or whatever. Bad idea. Definitely mount to faceplate.

The build went smooth, everything worked correctly except, predictably, the sliders. I had never worked with sliders before, and didnt have any docs on these, so I winged it. First try was wrong. Second try was closer. Third try was correct. Sliders are much more intuitive than knobs. Linear.

Next step is to label this thing. I can't keep referring to my chart. =/ Maybe I'll hand paint it.

So, the video.

Sawtooth is from the Blacet VCO. Meaty little bastard. Filter is the Harvestman Polivoks clone. Nasty, unpredictable, awesome. Envelope generator is another Blacet. Rest is explained in the vid.

Anyway, here's 2 minutes of me messing around with it.
Enjoy. =]

Oh, and if you want to hear the project this will be used with, check out my work at http://www.myspace.com/endif

Thanks,

~!J!"

Serge Creature TGO Demo

Published on May 12, 2013 pjoris2·28 videos

"As there didn't seem to be too many basic demo's of Serge modulars, I try here to document my discovery of Serge. I'll start with the most recommended "starter" M-class pannel: the Creature; and more specifically with the basic noisemaker in there: the Voltage-Controlled Timegen Oscillator (TGO). All noises are made with +/- only the TGO. X-Fader used as output, and sometimes the SSG als LFO. An overview of the video:

Basic Functions of the Left Oscillator (Osc 1)
(00:05) Saw wave output
(00:20) Square wave output
(00:30) Frequency modulation using variable CV input
(01:10) Audio-rate frequency modulation
(02:00) 1V/Oct CV input
Basic Functions of the Right Oscillator (Osc 2)
Trigger on (to the right)
(02:15) Triangular wave output with variable rise and fall
(03:00) Frequency modulation using variable CV input
(03:30) Pulse output, varying frequency and duty cycle
(04:30) Demonstrating trigger switch
Trigger off (to the left)
(04:45) Triggering Osc 2 with pulse out of Osc 1
(05:00) Depending on the relative settings of Osc 1 & 2, the frequency of Osc 2 is now controlled by Osc 1. We can vary now Rise & Fall without changing the pitch of the Osc 2 output.
(05:40) Now using the Pulse output of Osc 2: pulse width modulation.
Using Right Section as Filter
(06:00) Plug in saw of Osc 1 in the lower Sig In (black jack). The Rise pot changes filter cutoff. The Fall pot only makes signal more quiet.
(06:30) Filter cut-off modulation using the VC in of Osc 2.
(07:30) Audio-rate filter cut-off modulation
Saw of Osc 1 in Input of Osc 2 and Trigger On
(08:00) Filtering was with Trigger Off. Now see what happens with Trigger On for Osc 2. No idea what it does, but sounds interesting ...
(08:40) Adding frequency modulation of Osc 2.
Feedback on Osc 2
(10:00) Feedback the output in the CV In: that way you get exponential (+ modulation) and logarithmic (- modulation) slopes
(11:00) Feedback of the output in the Sig In. No idea what this is.
(11:30) Add an LFO to the CV in. Even more noise.
(12:00) Certainly if you take the modulation into audio frequencies !
And finally: some more feedback:
(12:45) Osc 1 out in Osc 2 Sig In, Osc 1 Pulse in Osc 2 Gate in, LFO in Osc 2 CV in."

Took me a while to get that working without using too much processing, and the on screen keys have been improved a bit, sliding in to ways. Sliding up from below to sit over the current window and sliding as you can slide fingers between keys, all multi touch. Should have been like that from start."
