WMD Synchrodyne Expand

WMD Synchrodyne Expand Teaser

Published on Mar 23, 2013 William Mathewson·25 videos

"Teaser for the Synchrodyne Expand module. This is only a taste."

The following saved for the archives via http://www.wmdevices.com/synchrodyneexpand.php

"This is the WMD Synchrodyne Expand, we went a little crazy with it. But we figured that if you can grasp the original, you're the type that always wants to go deeper. So lets take this plunge together as we attempt to explain what it all means.

The Synchrodyne by itself is capable of a great deal, containing several modules in one, prepatched internally to create a vibrant range of sounds. It was difficult to cut many of the control capabilities from the Synchrodyne to keep it within the scope of an analog switched-capacitor filter module. The expand lets us bring many of the little nuances of the Synchrodyne to the patchable world.

It is designed to be powerful and extremely dynamic when minimally patched, but when patch cords start flying around to be open and experimental. You may also use many of the parts of the Synchrodyne and Expand separately in various parts of your patches. The open architecture allows it to do many jobs, even small ones.

VCO2 contains an identical saw core oscillator as on the Synchrodyne. The peripherals are slightly different, emphasizing different control points. The PLL frequency multiplier is similar to that on the Synchrodyne with many additional patch points.

WMD Invert Offset (MKII)

"The 6 HP Invert Offset module creates an easy way to modify control voltages for other modules in your system.

The Invert Offset consists of two identical channels. Signal applied to the In jack is vertically offset by the knob, additionally a CV signal may be applied to offset the signal vertically.

The +Out jack puts out a non-inverted signal with the specified offset. The -Out jack puts out an inverted signal with the same offset as the +Out.

The Offset CV input allows you to mix two signals together, Offset will never be inverted, while the signal at the In jack will be inverted based on the selected output.

There is also a sum output (1+2) that takes the non-inverted outputs and adds them together. Also there is a comparator gate output that is on if the channel 1 output is more positive than channel 2."

"Dynamics processing is not something typically considered in modular synthesis, especially subtractive patches. With many synthesists doing fully modular feedback patches, percussion and outboard processing with their modulars, compression now has a place in a eurorack.

The WMD Compressor is designed to serve all of your normal dynamics processing needs, but it pushes boundaries further. It can subtly calm resonance peaks, or it can add dynamic character to a bass patch. It can also completely crush and distort a patch into a pumping breathing monster.

The WMD Compressor is designed around the THAT 4301 core, a high end dynamics processor. It has been adapted for modular levels, but will work with +4 line level signals as well. It is designed to be transparent, using only ultra low noise opamps, but it also has variable input and output saturation to add some character and distortion.

Features
THAT 4301 Forward Compressor
Ultra Low Noise Opamps
DC Coupled Throughout
Input and Output Variable Saturation
+-12dB of Input Gain
Manual/Auto Attack and Release
Hard or Soft Knee
RMS/Peak/Adaptive Level Detection
Expander Mode
Infinite Ratio for Limiting
CV Control
Wet/Dry for Parallel Compression

WMD Digital VCA Overview

Published on Apr 9, 2013 William Mathewson·25 videos

"Quick video of the Digital VCA eurorack module."

The following saved for the archives via http://www.wmdevices.com/digitalvca.php

"The WMD Digital VCA (Voltage Controlled Attenuator) is a novel module with a few bells to enhance your modular experience. It uses a digitally controlled analog circuit that allows for some creative control!

The rubber hits the road on this module with the Instant / Gate / Zero Crossing Detector switch and CV input. Normal operation happens in the Inst mode where the VCA will follow the CV signal as it is seen.

Things get more interesting when you enter Gate mode which causes the CV to be updated ONLY on a rising edge of the signal going into the Update G/ZCD jack. This jack has the In jack's signal normaled to it. Gate mode allows the Digital VCA to sample and hold a control voltage, very useful for pulling modulation data out of other sources. This mode uses a Schmitt trigger to ensure noisy signals can be used without causing multiple unintended updates.

The Zero Crossing Detector is the crown jewel of the Digital VCA. This little circuit only allows the VCA to be updated when the Input signal (or Update G/ZCD signal) is at 0 Volts. This eliminates popping and clicking normally associated with fast envelopes. It allows you to use a Gate signal directly as an envelope without annoying pops!

WMD would like to thank Suit & Tie Guy (STG Soundlabs) for the concept. STG Soundlabs will be releasing a 5U/MU format version of the Digital VCA.

Features
Dual VCA Design
Low Distortion / Low Noise
VCA Closes Completely
Zero Crossing Detector
Gate/Trigger Detector
5V/8V CV ready
8 bit CV resolution
Analog Signal Path
Bi-Color LED Signal Indicator
Red CV Indicator

"Synthesizer demo of the analog synthesizer Roland Juno-106 from 1984.

In this movie I play some of my own sounds - on some sounds I used a small amount of digital delay from a Roland DEP-5 (my favourite unit for delays).

The Juno-106 is one of the most loved and used synthesizers by professionals and hobbyists alike! William Ørbit, Überzone, Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim), Autechre, BT, Vince Clarke, Moby, 808 State, Underworld, Leftfield, Fluke, Josh Wink, Todd Terry, Depeche Mode, Eat Static, Biosphere, The Prodigy, The Shamen, Bushflange, Cirrus, Astral Projection, Apollo 440, Faithless, Union Jack, Computer Controlled, Pet Shop Boys, Sneaker Pimps, Erasure, Freddy Fresh, Rabbit in the Moon, Kevin Saunderson, Jimmy Edgar, Laurent Garnier, Vangelis, Sigur Ros, and the Chemical Brothers have used this synth.

THE SOUND PROGRAMS IN THIS MOVIE:

Do you own a Roland Juno-106 and want to get those fantastic sounds for your synth?

The "ANALOGAUDIO1 JUNO-106 PATCH BANK" costs 12,99 Euros and includes 64 great patches - lush analog pads, great retro sounds, fat basses, sequencer sounds and funky leads (in one word: all you hear in the video and some more).

As an experienced synth player, programmer and composer I programmed these patches at a professional level for studio use. This patchbank gets the most out of your Roland Juno-106. Also included is a patch list (PDF), to find the right sounds quickly. The sounds are not available anywhere else.

The patchbank will only work with a Juno-106, but NOT with the Juno-60 or other synths.

After payment through PayPal you will get a sound file (wav) for the tape interface of your Juno-106 and a patchlist via email.

If you want to buy the "ANALOGAUDIO1 Juno-106 PATCHBANK", send me a message through YouTube (and check your spam folder, I answer quickly).

"Présentation du module eurorack Tyme Sefari MKII de The Harvestman (1/2)

http://modularsquare.com/fr/The-Harve...

Hopefully shows some of the ridiculously flexible sound architecture that is possible with this board. I'm playing some riffs both of my own original music and from some of the bands that have influenced me. The last bit, Intro to Gunslinger, while it is short it DID take a couple of weeks practice to get it right and is backed by a Machinedrum.

A summary of song riffs played:
G-Storm - Miranda (By The Sea)
Radiohead - All I Need
Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence
G-Storm - Cerulean Deraileur
Jimmy Van M ft. Terra Deva - bassline from Love Like Sleep
G-Storm - Spaced Out Beauty
New Order - Blue Monday
G-Storm - Aerial
808 State - breakdown from In Yer Face
Garbage - You Look So Fine
Sasha - Mr Tiddles
Go West - intro to Call Me
G-Storm - untitled track
G-Storm - Expectations (a really old unrecorded track of mine)
Spaced Out Beauty
M83 - You Appearing
Expectations
Immersion Domain - 1000 Images (I used the same Limuidz factory patch on the Xpander for that track)
Van Halen - I'll Wait (Eddie used an OB-Xa, I believe)
G-Storm - Descendant
Vangelis - Blade Runner (Opening Titles)
G-Storm - Gunslinger
G-Storm - intro to Gunslinger

xoxbox (x0xshop original) vs. XOX Atomic Mod 1

Published on May 16, 2013

Most notable difference is the main output level which is higher on the x0xshop one. This is because it doesn't have the modulations and distortion/ overdrive circuits in the signal so the VCA can go higher. Square wave is also a little bit different but this is within "personal taste" margin, ca. 5% I guess."

Like a reversed Atari 2600.

"For auction is a very rare Stylophone 350s. This was an early Syntesizer made in the UK. The original models were made for home use, but the 350s was DubReq's venture into a "professional" performance instrument.

It's weird, and that's good. Bands like Jon Spencer, Kraftwerk, artists like Bowie and Jack White, all used this or a version of this on recordings. Most notably, Bowie used a Stylophone in his seminal song Space Oddity.

This particular model was purchased new, however it did not include the actual box, only the styrofoam packaging. I used it a couple times several years ago, maybe a total of 3 hours, only at home and only by me.

The 350s works by using to electric styli to operate a keyboard. There is also a photo sensitive cell that works similar to a pitch bend. The unit has input and outputs and operated on 9v or an AC adaptor (both not included).

A Patch A Day, No. 8

Published on May 16, 2013 hamiltonulmer·8 videos

Those are some close-up wobbly knobs...

"Pressed for time, & probably more technical than musical patch - I wanted to direct the Quadra EOC's into each other's TRIG, thereby creating a poor man's four-stage sequencer, with the duration of each stage is determined by the end of the slope. The Quadra pings itself in a circle.

Sadly I am very pressed for time on this patch today, so it is enough that I finished the video at all.

The first channel is just the Quadra itself snapping hard, making a simple blippy kick. The second channel has a bit of fm-modulated VCO A sine of the DPO, fluttering according to the Graphic Sequencer. The third channel hits a ring-mod'd DPO VCO B. Finally, the fourth channel uses the SUM output of two quick-oscillating MATHS, tuned in major 2nds from each other.

Some of this was motivated by my recent drone patch, using Quadra and Maths as dedicated oscillators. Quadra can provide a decent snap of a kick, and of course so can Maths. Pretty excellent.

(I hope I have the order of these right - I am away from the synth and can't verify by actually watching the video again.)"

Yamaha QR-10 Auto-Accompaniment test (Funny tribute to Bronswerk!)

Published on May 16, 2013 AnalogyGuy·10 videos

"Here's something quickly sequenced stuff into QR-10. Please don't take this too seriously ;)

Yamaha QR-10 is basically arranger tabletop module from 90's but it's quite more dedicated to DJ, jamming bands or whatever. You can fully edit it, make your own sequences and fill-ins and so on. It's incredibly difficult to record drum loops because you can record sequences only in realtime mode but fortunately there's quantize function making it a lot easier. It's got very nice and large selection of all kind chords, rubbery buttons for "keyboard" and small but nice and punchy build-in speaker for enough loud street performance so you won't need anything else to play it =D

Each pattern is made of rhythm track, bass track and two chord tracks. Even thought it's quite limited, but you can still create them all in polyphonic. All patterns can have 1 variation and 2 fill-ins (one for the variation) plus intro and ending. Here I created variation pattern which I can change in realtime or pressing the second fill-in which changes into variation. I know the sounds are, if not a bit dated but lower quality than the QY sequencers. Overall this is one little fun scratch pad but also quick way to check and listen suitable chords for your new composing projects.

The only serious "let down" is the omission of midi note output so you can't overcome the low quality samples. There's midi out connector but it's only for bulk dumps to save your presets and sequence data so there's no way to sequence external midi instruments, but you can use midi keyboard for chord transposions. Also there's only 2 jacks of 3.5mm stereo outputs, "Output" and "Phones". Also, the phones connection is the only one to mute the build-in speaker. There's also input to feed external audio so you can jam along with electric guitar or whatever. There's also some sampler functions and even build-in microphone.

About this performance, I created sort of tribute to my friend Bronswerk who created perhaps the best live sequencer ever! (Zyklus improvisor)"

dr gogo

"dr gogo is based on the analogue board of the DR-55 drum machine. Individual trigger inputs for the 4 drum sounds, accent gate input. Pots for RS tune and BD tune & decay.
I added a noise gate & touch of reverb to the mix, my camera has auto level adjust so in the silent parts it immediately turns the gain up to 11 for a good dose of noise."

dual drum module

Published on May 16, 2013

"two drum modules, these use envelope followers, crude VCOs and VCAs, so can simply be used as VCOs as well. These are based on designs published in an old Japanese magazine article, I heard these demonstrated by Under Techno Systems at a Tokyo synth meet back in 2004 and never forgot how fantastic they sound. They have been changed a lot from the original design but the basic circuit blocks are the same."
