MFB-522 Drumcomputer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction

"mfb-522 is a drumcomputer with a fully analogue sound engine that offers plenty of editing capabilities. it includes a step-sequencer with popular tr-style running-light-programming. memory locations are available for 72 patterns as well as for 8 songs.

available edit controls:
bass drum [decay, tune, tone, level] - the bass drum can be programmed in two different lengths per pattern. it also offers and individual output.

snare drum [noise, tone, level] - rimshot [level] - snare drum and rimshot cannot be played simultaneously. however, they can be used in the same pattern. both instruments share the same individual output.

clap [attack, filter, decay, level] - the parameters allow setting the width and fullness of the clap sound. this sound also has its proprietary individual output.

tom/conga [tune, decay, level] - this sound source can be switched between tom and conga instruments. sounds programming allows setting of three different pitches.

cowbell [tune, decay, level] – clave [level] - tune for cowbell controls a detune-effect, while the pitch is set commonly with cymbal and hihat. cowbell and clave cannot be played simultaneously. however, they can be used in the same pattern.

cymbal [tone, decay, level] - tune sets the pitch for cymbal, cowbell and hihat

open/closed hihat [decay, level] - open and closed hihat cannot be played simultaneously. however, they can be used in the same pattern. this sound source offers and individual output.

the step-sequencer allows programming of 72 basic patterns plus 72 fill-ins. the latter being associated to the basic pattern memory location, resulting in a two-bar-pattern when using the fill-in. patterns can be combined to eight songs that each hold a user-definable sequence of up to 64 patterns. in addition to the instruments, a global accent-track is available. when set, the corresponding step will be played with a higher or lower volume-setting in comparison to the standard level. the mfb-522’s sequencer offers three different steps of shuffling. a stereo output will carry all instruments minus those where individual outputs are in use (bass drum, snare drum/rimshot, claps and hihat). using the midi-in, drum-sounds can be played with a keyboard or external sequencer. here, the sound sources act velocity sensitive. finally, mfb-522 can be synchronized to incoming midi-clock.

features:
9 analogue instruments
step-sequencer with 16 steps
25 controls for attack, decay, tone etc.
bass drum programmable in two lengths
tom/conga programmable in three pitches
memory locations for 72 patterns and 8 songs

the mfb-522’s dimensions are: 175 x 125 x 38/72 mm. the unit ships with a 12 volts power-supply."

Site Maintenance Tonight!

Just a heads up, but my ISP tells me they will be performing server maintenance tonight at 10PM PST for 1 to 4 hours and the site is expected to go down during the process.  I'm not happy, but they did give me advance notice.  You might remember this post.  That was me trying to move DNS servers to prevent the outage but I realized the impact would likely be greater than just holding my breath through tonight so I backed out.  We'll see how it goes.  You all should be out or sleeping by then anyway!

On a side note, I'm curious if http://matrixsynth.blogspot.com will work. Currently I have it set to go to m.matrixsynth.com.

Extended Tetrazzi Test

Published on May 17, 2013 NakagawaGakki·43 videos

"Here are some excerpts from my first test with the Extended Tetrazzi I have built. I spent about an hour exploring it right after I first turned it on this afternoon, sooo much fun.
The Tetrazzi PCB was ordered from Super instrument designer Peter Blasser at Ciat Lonbarde - http://www.ciat-lonbarde.net/tetrazzi/ Its sadly discontinued now, but the Tetrax is now available.
I want to take this basic design and extend it to become a more expressive and per formative instrument in my setup. I took some inspiration from the way the Tetrax is laid out.
I started by making the wooden play Barres longer to create more flex, a kind of "Differential Lever". This basically means that pressing down (and pulling up!) on either side of the fulcrum will produce different results. This modification alone has added a lot more subtle expression to the Tetrazzi.
I have brought all the SQT and TRN points for each internal Oscillator out to a metal (banana) jack that doubles the function. I can use the socket as a touch point to "bend" with my fingers but also temporarily hard wire these connections to retain a patch. Also these Banana jack are standard on Modular Synthesizers so I hope to be able to interface this with my modular in the future.
There are still 3rows of jacks that are unused ATM, I hope to further modify this instrument to add even more playability. There are many ideas at http://pugix.com/synth/modular-tetrazzi/ who has completely opened up the Tetrazzi and converted it into a fully blown Modular Panel.
Although I wont go this far I hope to glean some valuable info from his site.

The case of my Extended Tetrazzi has been designed and cut by me in the CAD/CAM environment using a CNC machine. The Barres have been especially carved down (on the underside) in such a way that they flex right over the hidden piezo sensors.
All wood is reclaimed Jarrah floorboards from a house that was being demolished nearby my workshop."

Sequencer & Arpeggiator Screens for Upcoming Andromeda A6 Editor

Follow-up to this post. Below is an update on the sequencer & arpeggiator sections via scd on electro-music.com.  The editor is nearing completion and is expected to be available next week.  This editor is extensive.  It's incredible how much it will open up and bring a fresh new approach to editing the A6.

"The step sequencer is captured in two pages as you can see. The arpeggiator in one page in the editor.

The first stepsequencer page is a good example to explain the building blocks of the editor:

- sliders: those are simple to understand. Double tapping on them brings up a jogwheel for fine tuning by the way, but the sliders already are a huge improvement over the Andromeda knobs
- switches (the ones with the red LED): for on/off functions.
- rectangles with rounded edges: those are always popup menus. I used them for parameters with more than 2 choices. On the step sequencer pages those are the note selection, number of steps,
- small boxes with a "m" inside: these will always bring you to a modulation page. There are 47 modulation pages. Each modulation slot that has the list of 79 modulation sources has its own page. With big knobs. On those modulation pages you can always go back to the page where you pressed the "m".
- little dots (like the one in the upper left corner above the clock rate slider) will be visible throughout the editor, indicating that that parameter is a modulation destination in one of the 47 mod pages.
You wll be amazed how many parameters are a modulation destination on the Andromeda!

The step sequencer has a problem that is not solvable as far as I know at this moment. The problem is in the "switch" between the first 8 steps and the last 8 steps (plus accompanying parameters): there is no way to tell the Andromeda "go to the first" or "go to the second" LCD screen (plus accompanying parameters).
The one you are looking at on the hardware is the one that should be on your iPad screen: you have to make them the same on the Andromeda. The button to select the first or last page is the button that is used to switch through the 16 steps on the Andromeda. The only way to tell the Andromeda to be on the fist page is to switch the synth off and on...
Well, something to think about when working with it. In the editor you can switch between the LCD screen for steps 1-8 and 9-16 by pressing the blue triangle in step sequencer page 1 on the iPad (it is simply forwarding 8 steps in the background). But you have to check on the Andro if it is the same there.

The same problem happens with the selection of the four step parameters: there is no way to tell the andro to start on one of them (note, velo, gate, step). You can only walk through them...

Furthermore there are parameters that do not work correctly or do not work at all. I will post about that later.

But I can tell from own experience that the step sequencer becomes a lot easier and thus more fun to handle with the iPad!

Another (known) bug is the fact that you can not use the hold pedal for holding the step sequence: sooner or later that gives hanging notes unfortunately. Be aware of that.

More later.

Boele"

Serge Creature X-FADER Demo

Published on May 17, 2013 pjoris2·30 videos

"A quick one about the cross-fader which lets the Creature communicate with the outside world. It's a two in, mono out voltage controlled cross-fader and voltage controlled amplifier. Has a 1/4 inch output jack so you can plug it into a mixing desk without the need for a format jumbler or banana-jack cables.

Used as cross-fader:
(00:20) One input (saw from the TGO) routed to both inputs. Note that the first input is the inverse of the second resulting in cancelling of the signal when equally mixed (F-Fade pot centered)
(00:35) Saw and square outputs of the TGO to In 1 and In 2.
(00:40) Using the CV-in for the cross-fading (VC XFADE). With maximal voltage from the SSG or TGO it doesn't quite reach 100% input 2.
(00:50) Left and right output of TGO ro In 1 and In 2. Including some audio-rate cross-fading.
Used as VCA:
(01:00) Amplitude modulation (AM) of a saw wave from LFO to audio-rates
(01:45) The same for a triangle wave
Some sounds:
(02:00) Random melody with cross-fading of the two outputs of the TGO.
(02:50) Trying carefully some output to input feedback while cross-fading going through the Korg-PME40X analog delays and phaser."
