A Buoyant Blue

Published on May 28, 2013 davidryle·112 videos

"A demo of a new Dave Dixon Analog Shift Register module.

This is a real time recorded session using the modular synthesizer. The ASR module is lacking a finished front panel but it is on order. I used a scratch 2U panel from an earlier MFOS Quad Voltage Quantizer build to house the panel parts & PCB. The build went well right off. There is a bit of drift in the looping function but I didn't use it here on this video. Most likely a component change would help with that.

Rather than a straight demo video, I decided to try to use the ASR in a more musical way to demonstrate one of the benefits of having it in the modular synth. The Dave Dixon design is very stable which is a nice compliment to the dual CGS ASR in my setup.

I am using a Q960 sequencer as master clock and pitch sequence duties for the main 7 step line as well as the second and third row as the 14 step counter-melodic line. The main output is the bass line and the other three voices are the ASR lines which build in the beginning to a chord structure in C Aug7. The counter melody is in C Maj. All pitch cv's were processed with a trio of Q171's and Q172 quantizers from Synthesizers.com.

Other sequences are Q119 and STG VMS for a very faint discord line as well as a rapid arpeggio which come & go at the end.

I tapped into the last gate out of the main line on the Q960 to trigger a slew-down pitched tone for the beginning note. An Yves Usson (build by STG Soundlabs) gate delay was used along with a Q961 Interface for gate timing on this crucial event.

A Synthetic Sound Labs Touch Tempo LFO is employed to create a faster timing for the dissonant line and the arpeggio. The Moon Modular 554 and 563 provide gate timings for these.

Inspired by the sound of the ASR controlled vco's, I was trying for a pleasant, ambient Eno-esque feeling to this piece."

Synth-City (A Short Film) on Kickstarter

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/artifactionfilms/synth-city-a-short-film?ref=live

"A new Short film. When Will finds his true talent for playing synths, he finds himself in a situation he could never have dreamed of...

Synth-City is an original short film, that follows Will, from the day he buys a synthesizer in a music store. His life quickly changes as he is invited to a special organization. This organization is Synth-City. Every night, dozens of synthesizer players come and have duels against each other in the warehouse that makes up Synth-City. However, Will quickly discovers all might not be as it seems as he learns more about doings of Synth-City and also of the brutality and relentlessness of a phenomenon called: "Desynthegration".

Although we already have a lot of the gear and all the locations, in order for this film to happen though, we need some funding for:

- Technical Gear, such as Lights, Cables, and Monitors

-Props for the film, from Synthesizers to Paperclips.

- Wardrobe for the characters.

- And of course, food for the crew.

The Plan is to start shooting in early June and film through early August. Post production will be going throughout the principle photography and the final film should be wrapped up by Mid-September.

The final film is estimated to be roughly 60 minutes long and will be released through several mediums and will be entered in film festivals the following year.

Who Are We? We are a group that for the past few years has enjoyed creating and uploading short films to YouTube. We have been honing our craft and learning how to deliver better content to this point for something like this. With this great idea and story we decided to go all out on this film, from the quality to the writing and acting and everything in between.

We can't do it without you! So back this project today!

And don't forget to share this project with your friends!

Chimera Synthesis bC16 SN 1M4H5W

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction

"The unit is about the size of a CD but still has a wealth of features to be connected via the included patch cables. Functionality includes: oscillator, LFO, ADSR envelope generator, VCA, VCF, noise source, ring modulation and MIDI interface.

The bC16 functions are controlled by sixteen color-coded potentiometers. Synthesizer sections are connected via the 10 included 2mm mini-banana pin connectors.

The unit is very well made. All the knobs and jacks are firm and operate smoothly. The bC16 is powered by 6 AA batteries (included) or an external 9 to 12 V source. It has an standard mini jack for earphones.

The bC16 was made by a one man company that went belly up and ceased to exist. There is quite a bit of information on the web, however. Check out the videos of the bC16 on youtube. There were only a few made and they are quite rare. I could only find one case of one being sold on the Internet.

This bC16 is in very, very good shape. It has no scratches and is fully function. It comes with 10 patch cables and a "patchable signal inverter" that allows a signal to be inverted before patching it into another section. I will provide the documentation on a CD. The manual is not fully completed. I have no other packaging for the unit. The auction includes the items in the first photo.

This is a really nice, fun synthesizer for a collection or a musician...

The manufacturer says:

The bC16 miniature patch synthesizer packs a fully featured VCO, LFO, envelope generator, analog VCA, analog VCF, noise sources & ring modulator all in a CD sized case CNC machined from 10mm high-grade acrylic plastic.

Fifteen color coded potentiometers control key functions, connections between synthesizer sections are done using twenty-five 2mm mini-banana sockets.

Powered by either six AAA batteries or by an external (not supplied) 9 to 12v source, the bC16 can be used free standing (internal headphone amplifier), linked to an external keyboard/sequencer or MIDI-CV converters, combined with other bC16's, etc...

VCO: The complex VCO (actually two linked VCO's) waveshape can be adjusted through sine/triangle/sawtooth and square wave (with adjustable dutycycle). The VCO can be CV modulated (log response), FM modulated (linear response) or can be driven by MIDI NOTE values. The two linked VCO's can be offset using a control knob, CV or MIDI for rich complex tones.

LFO: Like the VCO the LFO is actually two linked low frequency oscillators with a host of modulation possibilties and waveshapes. Like the VCO the LFO can also be controlled via MIDI.

VCF: An all analog 24dB discrete ladder filter with variable cuttoff (knob and CV), adjustable resonance, specially designed to work from the low voltage busses in the bC16.

EG: The bC16 envelope generator is very easy to use, four knobs (or via MIDI) control the Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release parameters of the envelope. Set sustain to zero and the EG enters repeat mode for long VCS3 style modulation possibilites.

VCA & HEADPHONE AMP: An analog voltage controlled amplifier is provided along with an built-in headphone amplifier (volume control via grey knob)."

Hartmann Neuron VS for Mac Now Free

via the NeuronVS Project: "In 2000, Axel Hartmann and I, Stephan Bernsee, set out to designing a novel synthesizer based on artificial neural networks used for sound synthesis, the Neuron synthesizer. We were able to get support from a lot of people, including well known artists such as Hans Zimmer, and Hartmann Music as a company won several awards for innovation in synthesis technology.

Unfortunately and despite the huge interest in our products, due to some issues with distribution and our hardware manufacturer Hartmann was driven out of business in 2004. With the company dead there was no chance for owners to get tech support or updates.

Just recently, a Facebook group came into existence that managed to attract many knowledgeable and skilled Neuron owners who provide support and advice to each other in their spare time. To aid them in the process of keeping the Neuron alive I have dusted off the old NeuronVS sources in order to revive the NeuronVS VST plug-in, a software-only version of the Neuron synth that came with a powerful hardware controller, the Nuke. Thanks to the generosity of former Hartmann CEO Stefan Rapp and Neuron designer Axel Hartmann I am now able to provide an updated version of the original NeuronVS software here free of charge, (hopefully) free of bugs - and with no warranties of any kind."

via the seller: "The SH-2 is an amazing synthesizer that is often under-rated. I have owned several SH-101s, and I can tell you that the sound of the SH-2 is fatter and more flexible than the sound of the SH-101. The benefit of the SH-2 is that it features the ability to detune the oscillators. There is a switch (wide/narrow) that allows VCO-2 to be detuned by several steps when set to "wide" Also, VCO-1 features sine in addition to saw, square, and PW. Another nice feature is the autobend slider that adds a slight pitch bend during note attack. It's really fun to use a TB-303 or MC-202 to control the SH-2 via CV/Gate or use a MIDI-CV converter."

Yellow Rollz Of Peace (for Kira)

Published on May 28, 2013 7numan7·74 videos

"This is a recording of a self-playing patch I made with a Meng Qi Music - Ciat Lonbarde Rollz5' electronic instrument.

The Rollz5 is based on diy "paper circuit" that Ciat Lonbarde published a while ago, and is similar to the Plumbutter instrument, but lacks the PB's sequencer (man-with-the-red-steam) and antenna (deerhorn), and comes with a slightly different configuration of filters (ultrasounds) and oscillators (geometric rollz). Meng Qi Music has designed pcb implementation of the Rollz circuits and offered them for sale to diy-instrument builders. The instrument used in this perfomance was built the MQ pcbs.

The sounds the patch is making, as you can probably hear, include sustained droning notes forming chords that pulsate and shift over time, bass and baritone-treble drum-beats (coming from the gong filters pinged by the slower rollz, i think), and high-pitched cymbal like patterns (from the ultrasound filters, i think).

The video patterns are being generated from LZX euroack video synthesis modules that are being modulated by the audio from the Rollz5 via the LZX Audio Frequency Decoder which has a built-in microphone. The video of me patching is actually where I'm slowly taking down the patch, using the recorded sound for this video to modulate more video synthesis patterns, projected on the instrument and my hands this time instead of the wall. Audio from both cameras was mixed with the computer-recorded audio for the soundtrack of this video (you can hear a few ambient noises, such as from patch cords being removed, that were not made by the Rollz5).

This was my first patch with the Rollz5. And I think it came out very, very nice (especially considering how I didn't really have a clue what I was doing, at first anyways). Throughout the was thinking of a young lady who I have never met named Kira. She is daughter of the founder of an interet forum that I frequent and has been ill in the hospital with life-threatening illness for the past few weeks. This video goes out to her (and all the other people in the hospital, or wherever they are, who need to rest and get well again so that they can proceed with their lives).

Enjoy!"

RIP Ralph Dyck, Sept 28, 1941 – May 20, 2013

The man behind the Roland MC8 Micro-Composer passed away Monday, May 20, the same day as Ray Manzarek, of The Doors.  For synth heads out there, Ralph Dyck may have had more influence. Via the Roland MC-8 Micro-Composer Blog where you'll find more notes on his passing:

"Readers of this blog will, of course, be very familiar with Ralph as the 'godfather' of the Roland MC8 Micro-Composer, but to the most of the music world he remained an unsung hero. Ralph’s primary background was in jazz and commercial music, and I got the sense that he never quite understood the full extent of the influence of his innovations in the realm of electronic pop music production. Suffice it to say that the Roland MC8 provided the definitive blueprint for the way that we work with modern sequencers. Initially Ralph was a bit tentative about sharing too much with a complete stranger (albeit an enthusiastic one), but I think I won him over by laboriously keying-in a piece of his called “Odd Rhythms,” which appears as a demo sequence in the MC8 owner’s manual."

"Real time modular synthesizer performance.
A Synthesizers.com Q960, Q119 and an STG Soundlabs VMS were used along with the Moon 563 Trigger Sequencer and the Moon 554 Octal Clock Divider for time based pitch and gate work.
The main bass line sequence was from the Q960 (which was the master clock) & divided up between three Q106 VCO's. I used the Q963 Trigger Bus to send portions of the sequence to the various vco's. A third vco was ping'd on beat six for the upper midrange note. The downbeat was doubled and a sub oscillator added for punch.
The pulsating string-like sound was the Q119 sequencer into an Synthetic Sound Labs 1200 VCO. It was tuned using the CV IN jack instead of the 1V/OCT. This allowed me to fine tune the half scale for a more analog sound pitch sequence. The Moon 563 was providing most of the off-beat timings and the Q119 was the main pulse timing. A Q962 Sequential Switch was used to divide the pulse string sound into three separate gate timings to the EG.
The high pitched scrape sound which came and went with a pulse core was the SST/Ian Fritz DDVCO through a Grove Audio PM Resonator module and on to a VCA which used a Mega Ohm Audio LFO2 to handle the intermittent sweep in and out. The DDVCO had a MIX CV from another LFO2 and octave switching with a S&H square wave.
The squelchy percussive filter sweep noise was the Q107 State Variable Filter in resonant peak overdrive mode. The Sputnik VCS module provided the timing to the filter and I got to play this by hand throughout. A Q127 FFB was employed to tame the sound.
The final sweeping and pulsing background sound was the STG VMS sent to a pair of Q106 vco's in soft sync. The carrier was pitch modulated by the voltage from the VMS. The sound was sent through a Polivoks LPFilter and finalized through a Blue Sky plate reverb.
A Lexicon MX200, TC Electronic D-Two and a pair of Behringer DD400's filled out the delay lineup."
