MacBeth NEXUS Test #5

Published on Jun 24, 2013 macbethsynthesizers·83 videos

"As I finalize the design of the NEXUS synthesizer for production- I took it the prototype through to the work bench. Basically- the work/refinements are complete. This recording has no external effects- the only sounds are from the NEXUS itself! I've designed a synthesizer that has the type of sound, similar to that used on the David Bowie trilogy that was recorded in Berlin in the seventies- see what you think!"

Groovesizer Alpha (proto) - MIDI sync

Published on Jun 24, 2013 MoShang·43 videos

"In this video, the Groovesizer is synced via MIDI clock to Reaper (playing the drum loop).
The Groovesizer is an arduino-based DIY 32-step sequencer / synth - the project is based around a custom PCB that in it current form features 4 rows of 8 tactile switches and leds - the final version will add a fifth row of buttons and leds dedicated to control functions. It features an embedded hackduino, an 8-bit DAC option, an LM386 amp output, MIDI in/out/sync and is configurable to work with some of the most popular existing arduino audio projects. Firmware can be updated from the arduino IDE, either via an AVR ISP programmer, or by flashing the chip on an arduino board and swapping it out. Furthest along in its development is the Alpha firmware which features a 3 oscillator monosynth. Other firmware will include the Bravo which borrows code from the Bleeplabs Bleepdrum https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11606 , the Charlie, based around the Illutron 4-voice wavetable synth http://www.instructables.com/id/Turn-... , and the Delta, based on the original Groovesizer with the auduino synth engine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zsxWf...
The complete kit with PCB and all components (without enclosure) will be sold for around US$100 - follow the progress on this project at http://groovesizer.com"

Arturia MINI BRUTE Part B - MIDI Control with Tenori - BOC Style

"A 'Boards of Canada' style jam with Tenori MIDI controlling and being audio filtered by the analog MiniBrute synthesizer. The many I O connectivity options of the MiniBrute ( Audio, MIDI, USB and Analog CV ) allow it to work with the hardware synths or software DAWs you already use.

All music in this video is my own original composition, made with the synthesizer instruments that I am demonstrating.

[ I have obtained official permission to video review and Monetize videos from

Sequential Circuits Prophet VS Synthesizer SN 0118 with Extras

via this auction

Interesting note from Wine Country Sequential regarding the pressure sensors. The Prophet VS is known to have their aftertouch go out over time.  Wine Country Sequential was formed by ex Sequential Circuits employees and is still in business today.  You can read up on their history here.  The Prophet VS of course was the first Vector Synthesizer with four digital multi-waveform oscillators and a CEM based analog filter.  You could use the joystick to morph the levels between the oscillators.  Recent synths that contain the Prophet VS waveforms include the DSI Evolver, MEK and PEK and the John Bowen Solaris.  The Evolver, MEK and PEK only have two oscillators available with the Prophet VS waveforms while Solaris has four plus other waveforms of course.  Vector Synthesis made it's way into the Yamaha SY22 and TG33 followed by the KORG Wavestation line of synths.  None had analog filters.  The SY22 and TG33 allowed you to record the path of the joystick movement and the Wavestation added wave sequencing where you could loop through selected waveforms in sequence.

Via the seller/listing: "Classic 80's synth. I'm the original owner. Bought in 1986, serial # 0118. I'm including the original owners manual, sales brochure, 2 ram and 1 rom cartridge, power cord, soft shell case, technical information and schematics. I'm listing it in very good condition. Studio use only. Never been on the road. Had upgrades from both Sequential and Wine Country Sequential. The only issue that I know of with this synth is that I cannot guarantee that midi "aftertouch" also referred to as "pressure" will reach it's maximum value (127) when played from it's own keyboard. It will respond to the maximum value when played via midi cable from another keyboard or computer. Modifications 738 and 739 were performed by Sequential to address this design problem. The pressure pads have also been replaced. If not for this particular design flaw, I would have listed this instrument in excellent condition. This is an awesome sounding keyboard, like no other synthesizer in my personal opinion."

Update: A Campbell Payne in the comments noticed something interesting I never paid attention to before on the original Microwave.  The back reads "Made in West Germany".   East Germany opened its borders on November 9, 1989 and the Berlin wall came down in 1990.  The Microwave I was released in 1989.  That's an interesting bit of synth history and a reflection of the times, forever engraved on a synth. It's interesting to wonder what it might have been like at Waldorf at that moment in time.  The celebration of their first Microwave and the end of the Berlin wall.

All electrolytic capacitors have been replaced with new ones to spec, including the power supply capacitors. switch light has been replaced with a new neon (same type as original). All but one op-amp was replaced with new ones on the mono section. Power chord is original and is in great shape. Some trimmers were upgraded for coarse and fine tuning of the mono section. Footage and transpose switch notes have also been calibrated. Cosmetically I’d say it’s a 6/10. it has some dings and scratches here and there. All 4 feet are soild and original. I was just happy to have one with a lid as the ones that dont have a lid suffer the most damage..."

Cyclone Analogic TT-303 Bass Bot Sequence Playback Bug

via this auction

I've been meaning to put a post up on the bug and this auction listing reminded me of it.  Recently on the AH email list there has been some discussion on the TT-303.  The verdict on sound is pretty positive, some stating it is bound to be the next classic.  People are happy with it.  But... There is a bug with the sequencing software that people should be aware of.  Computer Controlled described it best on the list so I'll quote him (others have confirmed the bug so it's not just his unit): "The next selected sequence plays a note from the previous sequence on the first step of the new pattern. So, if you select a blank sequence, it will play a note on the first step. And conversely, when you select a programmed sequence after a blank one, there will be a blank step on step one."

"I'll almost certainly never get the time to sit down and really bend this one and make it look all cool like the pros do, but still, pretty fun. If i do find a bend or two that I really love, maybe ill hardwire it."

For those not familiar with circuit bending, this is typically how it starts.  You make connections on the circuit board that weren't meant to be made and see what happens.  Not that I advocate circuit bending full blown synths, but if you do be careful.  You might fry it or yourself.

SIEL DK-70 Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer SN 1460

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The DK70 is a fully programmable, battery powered portable synthesizer featuring subtractive synthesis using DCO, VCF and VCA technology (similar to Roland's Alpha Juno series). It has a polyphony of 8 voices in normal mode and 4 voices in dual mode. There are 50 memory patches (40 preset, 10 user) but that could be expanded to 100 with additional ROM or RAM cartridges. Editing and creating sounds is a behind the scenes affair - that is, not for real time or live use. With only a handful of press buttons for all data entry, editing is very tedious and boring.

So stick with the presets or pre-program and store your own sounds for later because this synth is otherwise aimed right at the live user - battery powered, lightweight, built-in guitar strap hooks and an optional "Stage Set" Grip with pitch ribbon, modulation depth, program change and octave +/- controls. The 49-note keyboard does not have velocity sensitivity. It also has a chorus effect and a simple two track sequencer which can store up to 200 notes. This synth is great for string sounds, pads, bass and strange noises. Although similarly designed synths like the Roland Juno and Korg Poly-800 often seem more popular, many users have found the DK70 to have warmer and more 'analog' qualities from its VCF and VCA sections. The DK70 is probably an underrated synth and definitely worth checking out if you ever come across one..."

"This interesting old keyboard from the 70's has a drum machine, 3 octave keyboard, FM radio and tape machine built in. You can also plug 2 microphones/instruments in and record. Problem with the tape is the rewind and fast forward dont work, they start functioning and then slow down. The record function DOES work, i plugged in a guitar and played along with a beat and it recorded and played back. the keyboard notes all work, it has a cool octave up and down touch function and vibrato.. drum beats are waltz , march rock bossa nova and beguine. Very analogue sounding drums and good bit of bottom end considering what it is. Come with original Sankei speakers. The sort of thing a collector would love but also the kind of thing a young artist would do a boiler room set with. It may need some work, is old and has NOT had a full professional service it has just been tested quickly by myself and appears to be working as well as i have listed. Sold as seen..."

"CasioTron Beats re-creates the rhythm patterns found on the vintage home keyboards of the 70's and 80's. These popular keyboards were analogue and have now become collectors items because of their warm sound.
This particular version takes the drum sounds from the then popular Casiotone MT-70 which although was more modern than the earlier models, it is still analogue as you will be able to tell from the sound.
Remember those bossa-nova and samba beats? Well here they are!
NOTE: To move the sliders, you have to nudge/push them. We are going to change the controls soon so they are easier."
