Jurassic Park 'Malekko'

Published on Jun 25, 2013 Erik Tinberg·13 videos

"When you have a few hundred dollars invested in modular synthesis bits, the first thing you do is half-assedly perform the Jurassic Park melody.

All sounds come from a Malekko / Richter 'Anti-Oscillator' being modulated by a Malekko / Richter 'Oscillator II' and sloppily played by a pair of Make Noise 'Pressure Points' with a 'Brains'."

Machine Machine (2013)

Machine Machine (2013) from AudioCookbook.org on Vimeo.

"Machine Machine (2013) is a 32" touchscreen installation that functions as an electronic instrument. Granular synthesis is used to loop 'grains' of sound and video at variable lengths and frequencies. These parameters are based on the y-axis of the touch point on the monitor. The x-axis determines the position of the grain within the timeline. The piece was exhibited last month at the Northrup King Building in Minneapolis during Art-a-Whirl and for Visual Storage; the MCAD MFA thesis exhibition.

Within the piece there are five different segments that can be manipulated. Each segment provides the sound and visuals of a particular machine doing its job. These include a magnetic scrap crane, a train engine, a hydraulic metal cutter, tanker cars, and foot traffic. The video demonstrates some of the range and subtlety possible with the device.

PT Audio Dual Digital Oscillator

flickr by sduck409 (click for more)

"Here's my build of the Dual Digital Oscillator, blacked out version. PCB is from Lazerkind/PT-Audio."

And some details from Muff's:

"It is based on DSS (Direct digital synthesis) and is running on a ATMega 328p chip.

Both oscillators share a set of 4 * 8 Wavetables that can be interpolated.
It has 8 modes of operation:
- 1. Phase mod 1->2, 2->1
- 2. Saw mod
- 3. SampleWrap
- 4. BitCrush
- 5. PhaseCrush
- 6. Bitkill
- 7. And/Or
- 8. Sync 1->2
(still not 100% set in stone as so many variations sound cool)

pitch tracking is 5 octaves, 1V/oct. And can be offset +5 octaves with the coarse/fine controls. Additionally the pitch can be modified by the pitch mod inputs +/- 5 octaves.

Osc1 can be switched down one octave, and osc2 switched down 8 osctaves.

Osc2 can either follow osc1 or run free, by flipping the link switch.

All CV inputs are 0-5V but the pitch mod that is -5/+5. All inputs are protected against voltages outside that range, but inputting a non expected voltage may result in unexpected behaviour"

And some audio demos:

"If you want a monster digital Bass Drum and Snare drum to cut through even the densest of layered tracks, this machine will not disappoint. It would be best suited for Industrial/Electronic Body/Darkwave music ala Front 242 or Skinny Puppy, but, as with any machine in the right hands, could easily be used for other genres. They're easy to find, they're relatively cheap, and you can use them as MIDI sync (24 or 48) converters as long as you use it as your master clock. "

BUCHLA LIGHTNING I MIDI MOVEMENT CONTROLLER w/four wands

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"This unit was produced in 1993 and was only used for 2 - 3 years. It is in excellent condition and all the NiCad rechargeable batteries in the four wands have just been replaced. (Charging is done via the unit itself by plugging the wands into the two charging jacks on the back of the unit, all cables are included for this). Original manual also included.

LIGHTNING I is aspecialized MIDI controller that senses the position and movement of handheldwands and transforms this information to MIDI signals for expressive control ofelectronic musical instrumentation. Incredibly versatile in it’s MIDI programming, you can control sound onmultiple channels simultaneously and achieve remarkable triggering andcontinuous control of MIDI sounds using only the two wireless wands.

The bulk ofLIGHTNING’s electronics is housed in a half rack cabinet that can be mounted ona mic stand (comes with the fitting on the bottom). NOTE: this is a Lightning 1 and does not comewith any built in sounds. Lightingtriggers via MIDI sounds resident in your computer or external MIDI soundmodules. It also uses rechargeablebatteries and the battery charger is built into the unit (unlike Lightning II& III).

Very deep MIDIimplementation and user programmability to easily achieve complex triggeringand continuous control of ANY MIDI controller parameter in any dimension of thethe X/Y spatial axis. MIDI back-up andrestore via reliable MIDI SYS EX to any computer or MIDI storage device.

Based on principles ofoptical triangulation, LIGHTNING gathers its information by tracking tinyinfrared transmitters that are built into baton-like wands. Unencumbered bywires, these wands provide complete freedom of movement within a performancespace that can be as large as 10 feet high by 16 feet wide.

Basically, LIGHTNINGsenses the horizontal and vertical position of each hand, for a total of fourindependent coordinates. From this information, LIGHTNING's digital signalprocessor computes instantaneous velocity and acceleration, and performsdetailed analysis of gesture. An easily mastered, musically oriented interfacelanguage allows the user to define relationships between various gestures andpotential musical responses.

In one sort ofimplementation, LIGHTNING's coordinates might be mapped to various MIDIcontrollers on multiple channels. Spatial pitch wheels, pan pots, level slidersand modulation wheels are easily defined and great fun to play. Performancegestures can be analyzed for direction and velocity and can be used to generatea variety of notes as well as other musical events. Multi-dimensional zoningcapability can be used to create different musical responses in differentregions. Everything you need to create the conceptual ensemble (an invisible, acoustic virtual reality).

User definable scaleand tuning tables allow one to determine the range and selection of notesoccurring along a horizontal or vertical axis. Pitches can be in any order, andthe boundaries can be set where ever desired, facilitating the creation ofspatial instruments and imaginary orchestras.

To facilitate its usein conjunction with other controllers, LIGHTNING possesses intelligent MIDImerging capability. A complete system exclusive implementation enablesLIGHTNING presets to be stored and edited via external computers andsequencers.

YAMAHA CS-5 Analog Synthesizer 1978 | HD DEMO

Published on Jun 25, 2013 AnalogAudio1·110 videos

"(c) 2013 by AnalogAudio1

The YAMAHA CS-5 came out 1978. It is a monophonic synthesizer equipped with 1 VCO, 1 multimode resonant filter (highpass, lowpass, bandpass), 1 LFO, 1 noise generator, 1 envelope. It also has an external signal input. This is great for processing signals - a bit like Korg MS-20. The LFO is very fast. It has CV and trigger inputs/outputs.

The CS-5 has the S&H waveform in the LFO, which the CS-10 does not have. This is very important to produce great FX sounds! On the other hand the CS-5 has only 1 envelope.

A nice little synth with some great sounds!

I played the CS-5 along with a Roland DEP-5 (delay) and a Lexicon MPX-500 (reverb)."

Korg All Access: Andrew Innes of Primal Scream and the MS-20 mini Analogue Synthesizer

Published on Jun 25, 2013 KorgUSAVideos·366 videos

"Korg met up with Andrew Innes of Primal Scream at the band's London studio to talk about his new Korg MS-20 mini, an analogue synthesizer featuring the original circuitry from 1978.
The same engineers who developed the original MS-20 have perfectly reproduced its circuitry and fit into a body that's been shrunk to 86% of the original size, yet retains the distinctive look of the original.

Perfect for Primal Scream, Andrew says:

"It's got an atmosphere to it straight away. Whether it's happy , sad or threatening. It seems to be really good at threatening!"

"The glorious thing about this synthesizer is that every button you hit makes it better "
