"WHAT IS THE NOTE?

It is a USB MIDI Master-Keyboard, complete with 25 or 49 analog keys that respond based on how deep they are pressed. This is a concept we call "Key-Swing" –

One could say its "Polyphonic Aftertouch 2.0"!

BACKGROUND

In our era, digital music production is synonymous with the use of virtual instruments. For every real instrument, a broad range of manufacturers offer a plethora of virtual software plug-ins.

They all have one thing in common. The various sounds they make are usually the product of a digital keyboard. And while this may be all well and good when it comes to simulating keyboard instruments, going further to configure the tone of each individual sound is a leap too far for them.

Give it a go – try selectively adjusting the individual tone of the notes of a chord played on a keyboard. You’ll struggle to find any solution other than post-processing. The normal aids – “Modwheel”, “Pitchwheel” or other rotary encoders – tend to alter across the board all the notes that are played.

Moreover, in theory, virtual instruments paired with modern computer technology should have even greater sound potential than their real-life peers. But this potential can be exploited only when the right input devices are chosen. If it’s a matter of which input device, in our opinion you should look no further than the keyboard. It has already proven its worth over the centuries, and the universal key arrangement makes it the optimal choice to accompany virtually any other instrument.

To meet these growing requirements, though, the features of a keyboard have to be adapted to the keyboard’s role, which has changed over the years. No longer is it a mere instrument for keys – it has evolved into a universal input device for various virtual instruments.

At NDVR - that is precisely what we do. Started by a revolutionary idea, we started developing our first master keyboard, the evo, back in 2010. The concept was simple: to use the extensive surface of each key as an input by turning the keys into a sort of touch-screen arrangement using a capacitive sensor.

The end-result was a game changer. Via simple surface touch gestures, the tone of individual notes can be influenced, independently of the others – and at any time. No matter whether before, after or while a note or key was played.

Inspired by its success and the abundant feedback, we started work on a successor a few months ago. This time we focused on completely different aspects during the development. That development is now over and we are proud to announce a new generation of digital master keyboards. The Note, as we call it, is more than simply an enhancement. It is an exceptional and unprecedented keyboard.

WHAT MAKES IT SO SPECIAL?

SoundSplitter: Circuit-Bent Talkbox

"A circuit board from a Milton Bradley "Mall Madness" board game (first edition) fit into the casing from a handheld electronic game from the late 70's called "Split Second". Uses 4xAA batteries. Along the side are two slide switches (power on/off and speaker mute), and 1/8" audio out. On the faceplate is a sound trigger pushbutton, two scrambler pushbuttons and a volume knob. A red LED is behind the clear red window and responds to sound levels.

As this video demonstrates, it can take a while to coax a satisfying sound from this gizmo. Not so much practical for live performance as for studio work: record it for a couple minutes into a DAW and chop it up to remove all those "HI!"'s. Or, flip a switch to turn on the internal speaker and annoy everyone within earshot when you're on the go.

"A short clip of a live session in the studio. Endless questionable noodling but fun for me anyway.

All sounds are the modular synth except the keyboard part. The keyboard sound was comprised of a Waldorf MicroWaveXT, MicroQ, FM8 and Hollow Sun's VP330 vst. The keyboard looper was a Korg Kaoss 3 Pad.

The video features a few of Ian Fritz' and Douglas Slocum's (Synthetic Sound Labs) module designs such as the Double Deka Ultrasonic VCO, A Teezer Thru Zero Oscillator and a pair of 5 Pulser wave shapers.

The DDVCO was used as a two channel step sequencer and sync'd to the Q960. The vco's were Q106's and filtered through a Q107 in band pass mode.

The first bass line was the STG Voltage Mini Store sequencer with a pair of Q106's into a Q150 Transistor Ladder Filter. A Trigger Mini Store handled the timing.

The secondary mid-bass line was a pair of vco's (Q106 and SSL1200) through the pair of 5 Pulsers and an Analog XOR. Several LFO's and an SSL 1520 Segwencer IV module permitted various timbral enhancements to the sounds. All the blending was done using a YuSynth Mixer.

The Q960 and Q119 Sequencers and quantizers managed most of the other melodic pitch stuff along with Moon Modular trigger and divider duties. A CGS Master Divider split the long division duties for voices coming and going.

The drone sound is a single Q106 into the Strymon Blue Sky reverb and through an Oakley Deep Equinoxe phaser.

A pair of pulse clicks were a Sputnik WCRS into a Polivoks Filter and the second was the Fritz Teezer vco and a CGS BiNTic filter. The envelopes were all Q109's.

A groaning formant sound was WCRS into a Sputnik VCS, through a FFB and SSL Digital Delay, then a Grove PM Resonator.

A final harmonized sequence was a Q106 to an Oakley Diode Ladder Filter."

It is a 2 oscillator monophonic keyboard each with their own signal paths, but with osc 1 also being able to route through osc 2. Each osc has sawtooth, square and sine waves. Plus 3 sets of separate LFOs for each oscillator. Really amazing deep bass sound to classic leads and pads, very old-school Bruce Haack era sound effects. "Don't be scared by the lovely panel graphics, this is actually a really easy to understand module! Basically, stick a trigger signal in the middle and it'll spit out rhythms based on the positions of the knobs - the lower one indicates how many trigger events will happen during each sequence, from none to all, the middle knob sets the sequence length - maximum is 16, so stick it in the middle to get 8 and so on, with the top one offsetting the start point of each sequence. Simple controls that allow you to quickly set up and control complex rhythms - this is a dual module so you get a pair of outputs and they can be controlled individually.

Please be aware that this module needs a 5V power supply in your modular case to work, plugging it in to a standard doepfer case will make bad things happen! Other power systems like that offered by Tiptop have 5V out of the box and it works fine but otherwise you're going to need a 5V adaptor, which is not included in this auction as I used it in a tiptop system. Fair warning!"

Update via translucent_nick in the comments: "the name of this module is a Greek word, and it means "elements" - the correct pronunciation would be 'sti-hi-a'.

New Division 6 Mr. Crotchety Eurorack Module

"Um... Wut? Why in tarnation does that Eurorack module have a smiley face on it?

At its heart, Mr. Crotchety is a random voltage generator. ...only it's not really random. This module has moods. I'd love to explain how to use it, but during development it's become increasingly clear that it is just going to do whatever it wants. Controls? Ha! Mr. Crotchety was having none of that nonsense, so we ended up removing them all. If you mess with it enough you can alter its disposition to some extent, which does make for some interesting live performances, but mostly you can forget about it.

This module is useful wherever you need a touch of uncertainty and cantankerousness.

Specifications:

Power supply: +/- 12 VDC (reverse-polarity protected!)
Power draw: Whatever it feels like drawing
Width: 4HP
Depth: Your face
Inputs: Nope
Outputs: Yup, there's one.
Controls: Good luck with that.

Control Voltage in Portland Featured in The Oregonian

Check out the full article online here.

"Pilgrims to Control Voltage aren't uncommon. The store is one of only a handful in the United States devoted exclusively to electronic music gear. In most cities, if you want to buy a synthesizer, a drum machine or -- bless you -- a theremin, your choices are general music stores, which typically don't have a wide electronic music selection, or online, where you can't test products before buying...

Today, Control Voltage's roomy shop is stocked with a panoply of musical gadgets. All the merchandise is set up to use and connected to headphones, inviting customers to sample the goods while sparing bystanders the cacophony. Control Voltage focuses on analog synthesizers, which have gained popularity over digital synths in recent years for their more organic sound. The store also specializes in modular synths: old-school, increasingly in-demand synthesizers made up of a case and an infinitely customizable set of 'modules.'

To a layperson, the instruments look as alien as flying-saucer consoles. To an electronic musician or a DIY type, they look like potential.

Those are Control Voltage's people. And, fortunately for Kramer and Bambina, there are a lot of them here. Portland boasts a flourishing music scene and a growing electronic community, and the city's culture encourages artistic impulses and obsession.

'In Portland, you've got to let your freak flag fly, right?" Kramer says. "People are open to expression out here. It's cool these days to be into something so much that that's the only thing you're into, as long as you're expressing yourself.'"

Benge's Twenty Systems Re-Released

"My 2008 album Twenty Systems has been reissued at last! So if you have been looking for it out there in the shops or online since it sold out a few years ago - well you can get it here (if you are in USA you can pre-order it here). The release is exactly the same as the original with the exception of a few minor tweaks that niggled me about the original (but the content and audio are identical). Thanks to Steve Malins, Darren at Cargo, and Paul Agar for helping to make it happen this time round!"

This is a great release and comes with a booklet filled with synth pics as you can see from some of the shots below.  Click here for a pic of the book.  Each track features only one synth.  You'll find a link to an interview with Benge on the initial release with some additional notes here.   The release transverses synths over time starting with the 1968 Moog modular and ending with 1987's Kawai K5.  This release is HIGHLY recommended for the music, the pics and audio showcasing individual synths.

AMSynths Update: AM8060SE JP6 VCF & AM8044 VCF & VCA

AMSynths Newsletter July 2013

"Latest News: Over the last few weeks we have been busy building modules for customers, as well as completing the testing of the exciting new AM8060SE JP6 filter, and a new VCF, HPF & VCA module the AM8105. Stock levels in the web store will start increasing again, and we are building AM8109 JP8 VCF, AM8140 Dual ADSR, AM8044 and AM8328 VCF's over the next month. So if you are after one of these modules, they will be in stock.

We will launch a very limited run of AM8320 VCF modules that use the CEM3320 configured to replicate the sound of SCI Pro One in late July. Details are here. If you wish to reserve one just reply to this newsletter. And finally, during August we should get round to launching some VCO modules, you can see the E-mu Systems Simple VCO that we have redesigned and replicated as the AM2210 here. Next projects to complete in the summer are both a Roland JP8 VCO and the ARP dual Athena VCO.

Best Regards
AMSynths"

"AM8060SE JP6 VCF
This new module is being launched in July with a batch of 10x modules going out initially to customers who have reserved the module. This is a dual SVF filter with low, band and high pass modes controlled by original Roland JP6 switches. The module goes into self oscillation at high resonance setting and we have carefully trimmed the design to ensure this is controlled, as SVF's can produce a huge signal level when oscillating, The original AM8060 used hard to locate IR3109 chips but we are now using SSM2164's which means we can build all the modules that customers want. Sound demos will be up on the web site soon."

"AM8044 VCF & VCA
The AM8044 module has a 4-pole low pass filter, as used in the Korg Poly 6, followed be a precision VCA. Just connect a couple of VCO's and a Dual ADSR (lie the AM8140) and you have a complete synth! A nice warm filter coupled with a very useful VCA, buy one in the webstore today at 125 GBP. Here is the link."

"Waveform Animator - 8x LFO + 8x phase shifter in Eurorack (Doepfer) format.

From one simple input waveform makes 8 "phase shifted" waves.
Sounds like 8 oscillators from one VCO only.
It is not working with square waveforms."

via this auction

"Animator module for eurorack / Doepfer A100 - ladik L-010.

Creates "fat moving sound" from simple tri / saw / sine waveform. Not usable for rectangular shapes.

Think about it as VCO extension - exact tone tuning ensures your VCO and Animator creates 8 phase-shifted and endlessly moving waveshapes summed to Animator´s output.

Sounds like 9 slightly detuned VCOs together, sounds simply FAT (8 shifted waves + 1 original from input).

Contains 8 phase shifters drived by 8 LFOs at 8 different frequencies (34 opamps total).

Try mix two waveforms in different octaves to Animator´s input (sine and triangle for example) - at Animator´s output you´ll get sound like from some kind of ring modulator but softer/milder and moving.

Parallel input (2) and output (2) jacks.

Quality connectors made in England (no cheapo China), durable engraved panel.

Built by me the best way I know. Handy 20cm (8") power cable included.

Width: 8TE/ 8HP/ 40,3mm.

Depth: 70mm /2,8" max.

Current: 90mA max.

Remarks (answers to your questions)

Settings:
There is no need for setting, internal LFO frequencies are spread between 1Hz to 0,01Hz and its frequencies are set in prime numbers ratio to minimize beating. This works well in full VCO audio range from low to high and exact LFO sequence repeats in very long times (in hours).

Stereo:
Infernal spatial sound will be heard if you´ll use two Animators for stereo (parallel inputs from one VCO, outs to left and right channel).
But for following sound processing you´ll need everything twice, i.e. for left and right channel independently (two VCFs, VCAs and so on).

If you have any idea for an custom module let me know. I´m preparing some further modules so stay tuned :)"

"The Dual SV Filter is a double 12dB/octave state-variable multimode filter which can be used as one or two mono filters or as a stereo filter. The audio input as well as the CV inputs of the left filter are normalized to the according inputs of the right filter which is super practical in stereo use as you omit multiples and a number of patch cords.

Each filter has a switch for inverting the CV - also very interesting when used with one common CV for both filters as you get opposite modulations.

Roland Jupiter 6 with Europa Mod

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"BIG FAT POLYSYNTH in virtually factory fresh condition.

After looking at several JP6s I bought this from Tonetweakers in the US five years ago, they said it was by far the nicest Jupiter 6 they had ever seen.

COSMETICS - Mint, really almost as it left the factory in 1983. There is a teeny tiny hairline scratch top left of the control panel running through the a of the Roland logo, anything else you see in the pictures is just dust or fingerprints! It really belongs in a museum, except then it would never get used, which would be a tragedy.

All knobs and buttons and LEDs are present/working and none have faded or gone yellow with age. The keyboard is springy, even and white. Even the performance section, which usually takes a bashing is unmarked, as is the back. It must have spent most of its life in a box to have survived so well, it's certainly never been gigged or left open to the air and sunlight in a smoky studio.

FUNCTION - Everything works perfectly, big fat analogue badness. In Unison mode it sounds like an OBX-a and even in standard poly it sounds amazing. It's capable of an enormous range of sounds from huge pads and crisp strings to quirky Moog-y filter bloops.

This example has the desirable EUROPA upgrade from SynthCom in V2.0 guise which not only upgrades the MIDI to embrace modern features but also upgrades the arpeggiator to include various modes including random (as in the JP4 on Rio). It also adds patch saving/loading via MIDI (making the dreaded tape dump obsolete), factory patch setting restoration and even a small sequencer - read more on their site - http://www.synthcom.com/Europa/europaFaq.html

Basically the Europa means you can really use this board as part of a modern studio setup and best of all it adds PATCH LAYERING! You can now layer the upper keyboard patch on top of the lower patch and control it with the BALANCE knob. This adds a wealth of sounds the standard JP6 can't get close to and really bites at the ankles of the Jupiter 8!!

Andy Collins (Gary Numan's synth man in Sussex) replaced a capacitor on the two-voice board for me last year, since when it's sounded and performed impeccably.

It comes with a dust cover, a Jupiter 6 manual (not original), a Europa manual and a power lead. It's switched to accept UK voltage but can be switched to US..."
