hexinverter.net AteOhAte Mutant TR-808 Cowbell DIY project -- Demo1

Published on Jul 17, 2013 hexinverterDOTnet·19 videos

"The AteOhAte Mutant Cowbell is a DIY (do it yourself) TR-808 Cowbell module based on the analogue circuit in Roland's famous drum machine. The circuit has been adapted for use in a modular synthesizer, and, while being able to create the same sounds featured on the 808, can also create other sounds thanks to the modified tunable oscillators and voltage control over the cowbell's pitch.

You can build one yourself at home (along with many other x0x-based drum modules) once PCBs are available from me at hexinverter.net

I will be releasing the AteOhAte Mutant HiHats at the same time as this project.

Diabolical Devices Circuit Bent Patchable Casio SK-1

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Diabolical Modified Casio SK-1 is the new and improved circuit-bent glitch monster from Diabolical Devices. Create vast soundsacapes, unique synth sounds and total chaos, all packed inside your favorite childhood toy. The Casio SK-1 is loaded with original features, sampling capabilities, and great sounds (for what it was).

Bending Interface

20 point bending patch-bay using 1/8" phono connectors. When these points are linked directly using provided patch cables or routed through bending accessories a wide variety of effects, glitches, drones, and other unique sounds can be generated. Everything from playable effects to circuit-bent madness. These points also interact with the onboard LFOs and square-wave generator, as well as some CV and audio signals. Experimentation is the key to unlocking some of the most unique audio and soundscapes you will ever hear.

Bending Accessories

The bending points, and the reaction they will generate can be altered and further manipulated using the selection of patchable electronic components located next to the main bending patch bay. Features two silicone diodes, two potentiometers, and two patchable switches.

Dual LFO and Square-Wave Generator

This section serves a few different purposes. First, it's a stand alone analog synthesizer capable of some amazing pulsing and droning sounds. Second it can be patched into bending points for a variety of unique reactions, and finally the output can be patched into the SK-1's sampling line input (relocated to added panel assembly) for some amazing sampled sounds.

CPU clock mod/PITCH

Added clock source generator allows for a wide range in pitch from way below to well above normal pitch. This modification has a bypass switch which allows you to select either the original internal CLK or added external CLK.

LED color change on SK-1

The only thing actually changed physically about the SK-1 is that the main power LED was changed from Red to Blue, All other cosmetic features were left original (except for the big box around it.....). Speaker and all onboard controls work as normal, and when none of the modifications are engaged this machine will behave as a 100% stock Casio SK-1."

Inputs/Outputs

MIDI Retrofit: Highly Liquid MIDI input kit has been installed in this unit, the MIDI Channel select switches have been relocated to the front panel assembly for easy access.

Main Audio Output and Sampling Line Input relocated to panel assembly. Main output disconnects internal speaker which was left in tact and fully functional.

Features

Custom Wood Enclosure
Custom fabricated and labeled panels with LED backlighting
Bending Interface
MIDI In
Master Power Switch
Patch Cables Included"

Diabolical Devices Circuit Bent Roland TR-707

via this auction

"Fully refurbished Roland TR-707 drum machine, with a twist! Added pitch controls and a circuit bending patchbay allow for tons of expirimentation and unique sounds. Disengage the modifications to use it as a classic stock 707, or engage the pitch controls and start plugging in the circuit bending patch cables to explore it's awesome new sonic capabilites.

Pitch Controls
10 by-passable pitch controls have been added, which affect individual sounds or groups corresponding with the volume faders. Each pitch adjustment has a by-pass toggle switch, pitch control, and status LED. This modification works by manipulating the clock frequency of the affected sounds playback. In bypass mode the original clock frequency is received and the original 707 sound is produced. When the pitch adjustment is activated the original clock frequency is replaced by the added external and adjustable clock frequency generators. Pitch ranges from way above to WAY WAY below original clock/pitch.

Circuit Bending Patchbay
In addition to pitch controls, the modification includes a 10 point ROM-based bending interface aka circuit-bending patchbay. Linking these points with patch cables accesses a mixed bag of odd effects, filter, modulated, and otherwise unique sounds. These effects are the result of cross-modulated and otherwise scrambled ROM data being converted to audio. When none of the modifications are engaged these machines will function and sound as Roland intended. Modification only affect audio and all other functions remain functional no matter what mode or modifications are engaged.

Fully Refurbished
In addition to the insanely fun modifications, all units are fully refurbished. All Diabolical Devices TR-707's are completely disassembled and cleaned: the panel/button board, all key contacts, switching outputs, and all faders and cleaned and treated. The DC power input is replaced and the circuit board is treated to prevent future failure (common weak spot). All interface jacks (MIDI, audio in/puts, and sync) are resoldered and inspected. This makes for very reliable instruments, complete with repair warranty.

Comes carefully packed with basic instructions to get you started, and a repair warranty. Basically if it should fail in the future, just send it back, the unit will be repaired and returned to you no charge (excludes physical damage, mechanical components, misuse, and other unreasonable situations).

Features
• 10 External CMOS CLK Generators/Pitch controls with bypass switch and LED indicators
• 10 point circuit-bending patch bay (4 patch cables included)
• Blue LED color change
• Fully refurbished unit
• Repair warranty"

Perfect Circuit Audio (RSS)

"Modified Alesis HR-16 with 24 point LED circuit bending patch grid and master pitch control.

The Diabolical Modified Alesis HR-16 accesses ROM-based bending effects by use of a 24 point patch grid. A single LED patch pin will make a connection and generate one of many bizarre effects and glitches ranging from distorted, filtered and modulated effects, to bizarre sounds and warped drum loops. The LED on the patch pin reacts to ROM data present at that point and puts on a light show.

This modification also includes a master pitch control with bypass switch and LED indicator, which affects all sounds. The patch grid and pitch control in combination can produce some truly unique drum and synth sounds. These are great machines and the HR-16 is loaded with original features. The modification unleashes the evil monster that has been hiding inside since the 80′s.

Diabolical Devices fully refurbishes their modified devices and uses quality parts. Not only do you get fun new features, you get a machine that's more reliable than ever and can still function as a stock unit would.

Comes carefully packed with 4 LED patch pins, basic instructions to get you started, and a repair warranty. Basically if it should fail in the future, just send it back, the unit will be repaired and returned to you no charge (excludes physical damage, mechanical components, misuse, and other unreasonable situations).

Features

24 point Matrix Patching Grid: Triggers Glitches and Effects when single patch pin is inserted
4 LED Patch Pins: LED responds to ROM activity
2 Patch Panel LED Indicators
Master Pitch/Clock Speed Control with bypass switch and status LED"

Arp Odyssey 2813 w/Kenton Midi & Extras SN 1982

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

via the seller: "This ARP Odyssey is the 2nd version, the mark II, Model 2813. This model is of the "black face w/gold lettering" era. It has CV & GATE & TRIGGER inputs. 2 Syncable oscillators, a S & H circuit, resonant filter, external audio input for processing other instruments, 2 envelopes for the VCF and/or VCA or VCO mod. Essential subtractrive analogue synthesis.

NOTE: It has the Kenton Midi Modification that allows a midi based performance controller to trigger notes as well...so if you have a FutureRetro, Sequencer, etc via Midi you can use this as well. This is a 300 pound ($450US) modification plus labor that was paid...so a serious upgrade for a synth lover.

I've also included ONLY for BIN, a roadcase ($135 value) and the chips that are no longer available to do the Filter Mod as well. These go for 50 and 12 pounds respectively (so roughly $95 value).

The ARP Odyssey was big competition for the Minimoog - it's a much more flexible synth so you can get a lot more interesting sounds out of it.

This model is duophonic, so you can play 2 notes at once - each note using one of the 2 oscillators. Or, play it monophonically for a double oscillator layered sound.

The ARP Odyssey's a great synth - it offers some very impressive modulation options, oscillator sync, 2 vcos, sample and hold with selectable inputs and lag, noise source, LFO, great sounding resonant lowpass filter, highpass filter, VCA, ADSR envelope with autotriggering, CV and gate jacks for hookup to externals synths, sequencers or MIDI convertors.

Countless musicians used this model - most famous musicians of the late 70s and early 80s used these alongside their Minimoog and Fender Rhodes or Wurlitzer EPs. Compared to the Minimoog, it can make similar musical sounds but is better for sound effects and deep sounds, thanks to the additional features."

TAL Bassline 101 Track by SYNTHDemo

via SYNTHDemo: "I stuck together a demo of the new TAL commercial SH101 emulation, the track is musically 100% TAL Bassline 101 including drums, vocal samples have been added.

Some light compression on the drums and limiting on the master channel, all other FX used are by TAL, including the Chorus LX, Reverb ii, Dub delay ii and iii and finally Tal Tube for a little bit of tubey warmth on a couple of tracks. Overall I'm very impressed with the sound, having not had a real 101 I can't directly compare but I definitely feel like it has quite an organic and slightly rough sound, filter is very musical and in the 6 note poly mode, run through the Chorus LX it has a pleasingly Roland poly sound IMO, definitely brings to mind my Juno60.

Demo copy is available from Patrick at: http://kunz.corrupt.ch/products/tal-bassline-101 with the only demo restriction being no saving of patches."

Moon Modular Synth 565 V3 Quad Quantizer & 565D Controller

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The module format follows industry standard (synthesizers.com/Moog/Curetronic/Mos-Lab etc.)

Modules quantizes variable control voltages into semitone intervals (1/12 volt) over an input voltage range –10.58 to +10.58 volts, in other words more than 2 x 10 octaves (128+128 semitones).

Gate pulses fed into the "Gate In"-jack trigger the quantizer; in "low" state no quantization occurs (useful to sync the quantization process precisely to a sequencer-clock out).

An "open" gate input is recognized by the module, it quantizes, i. e. if no gate jacks are patched. The four gate-ins are passed through, one plugged IN 1 feeds IN 2 to IN 4 as well. The gate outputs supply a pulse, whenever the (quantized) output voltage changes. The LEDs display exactly this pulse. The most recent quantized value remains preserved until the next quantization will occur.

Two adapters are on-board to connect one or two M 565 D Quantizer Controller modules. The M 565 v3 does support the connection of M 565 E modules, too.

An M 565 v1 or M 565 v2 Quad Quantizer Module can be updated to v3, to allow connection to M 565 D controllers and the M 567 programmer module."

Second, it has CV and Gate outs (positive and negative trigger jacks!) for the breath control tube

Third, it has CV out for the touch pad, a little felt pad that responds to wiggling your finger on it. (very fun!)

Fourth, it has CV out for another breath tube labeled "bite," (There is a closed end tube which responds to pressure change inside the tube when you squeeze or bite it.)

Extreme fun and very useful in any modular set up. I am including the original breath and bite tubes, which I recommend sterilizing before use :) This particular unit is in tip top shape. All the sliders were just cleaned and lubricated, and it is functioning great..."

New DIY Polymoog Project - TOS Polysynth

via adamstan on electro-music.com:

"Hello

I've always wanted to have the Polymoog, however getting one isn't easy - and getting working one is even more difficult , and that beast is HUGE. So I decided to build something similar myself. As with my first synth, this is mix of many designs. Currently I'm designing last boards, and going to order them today or tomorrow morning. They should arrive in two weeks, and then - soldering mayhem But, back to the design itself - what will it be?

- 61 keys
- Master oscillator section based on Polymoog - two VCOs driving two divide-down ranks using PLL
- Dividers built with CMOS counters - 4040 with diodes & 4024 for each note, like in TOG thread by AnalogCustom http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-45583-0.html&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight= - this is the biggest board
- Waveshapers based on Polymoog too
- Digital envelopes and LFOs
- there will be 4 LFOs, like in Polymoog - one for each VCO, one for PWM and one for filter
- VCF & VCA from Korg PS-3100. Why? Because it has lowest parts count, that's why
- Polymoog resonators and maybe some 4-pole master VCF at the output.

I will post current schematics when I get back home today. Here is waveshaper simulation done in falstad circuit simulator:" [above]

Capacitors have to be selected for each note to provide consistent saw level & PWM range across entire keyboard.

The VCF/VCA modules will sit on small "articulator" cards, that will plug vertically into 5 motherboards (one for each octave). Each mobo will also have associated waveshaper and envelope card. So it will look like this:

Green bars are the articulators, red one is waveshapers, and blue ADSR.

The nice thing about this design is that it will have no ASICs/proprietary parts - just off-the-shelf op-amps, CMOS and TTL cirucits. And a bucketload of transistors of course (almost 600)"

Epoch Modular Benjolin - Aleatoric Acid

Epoch Modular Benjolin - Aleatoric Acid from Richard Devine on Vimeo.

"A first patch with this mysterious oscillator. This patch was utilizing the rungler circuit which is an 8-step shift register that takes its serial input from the square wave of one oscillator and its clock input from the other. The digital outputs of the shift register are than put through a 3 bit digital to analogue converter to create random stepped voltage patterns (a stepped havoc waves). This arrangement allows for creation of complex interference patterns that gives the benjolin its unique, aleatoric character.

100% Beaterator 100% Synth - Week 6 - Royalty Free Electronica

Published on Jul 17, 2013 ChrisLody·63 videos

"This track was created with Beaterator for PSP and Playstation Vita. This time i experimented with making a track using no samples, only synths, comparable to using Korg Ds10 but with much more polyphony, patterns and effects. The only problem i found was running into the limit for the number of patterns in a song, you can see where it stops scrolling at the end of the video. Beaterator also has a realtime trigger mode like Korg Ds10 which would be a way round this but i haven't really tried it yet.

Right, so here's the idea. Trying to write, upload and give away a fresh piece of music on a roughly weekly basis. Will i be able to keep it up? Will i run out of ideas? Can i be bothered? How shoddy will they be? Does anybody care? God knows. But that's the point.

Basically the idea is to flex my musical muscles a bit. I have collected quite a bit of gear over the years and not much of it is getting used as much as i'd like, so this is my attempt to justify all those purchases whilst practising improving and getting ideas down fast as an antidote to procrastination. "Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working." as Picasso once said.

Royalty free for you to use for whatever under the creative commons license. Just rip the audio out of the video for now, i'll get these tracks uploaded to a dropbox account when i get my act together. Let me know if you use it, i'd be stoked."
