Mobile Music Making Seminar - Day 3

"Third day of the international App Music Seminar. We were controlling some apps via midi/osc and wifi. Very interesting was to controll some effects in the an audiobus setup. We also made a lot of recordings and then we edited them with apps and made something with the samples by manipulate them with effects.

The 'App Music' seminar is a composition and sound workshop in the form of an experimental laboratory; a creative space to explore music and make new discoveries. Participants are investigat perspectives and potential of "app music" through a collective 'learning by doing' approach.

This was owned by 1 person and has been stored away for many years. Recently has been brought back to life from a professional tech. This CRUMAR DS-2 is both monophonic and polyphonic.
It has MASSIVE sound. I've owned many analog synths, MS-20, Octave Cat, Prophet 5 and I have to say nothing compares to this Crumar sound.
It has a very unique sound and it can get very dirty and big. It's awesome at creating phsycodelic errie type sounds. Has many routings and interestingly two flo's. Polyphonic section has Lo-pass and Hi-pass filter. Both Monophonic and Polyphonic section can play at the same time..."

"TWO MODS

1st is the LFO section (when switch is engaged) has the ability to do super fast rate to where it can almost create a new sound by itself. Once the switch is on it doubles in speed, variable double speed of course. Pretty cool

The 2nd mod is where things get interesting. This synth has one filter per OSC (uncommon for a synth) so when the mod switch is engaged the 1st filter actually passes through the 2nd filter to create some really interesting sounds. I do have to say that with this Filter Mod the sculpting of the filters is almost endless. This mod gives the synth the ability to create way more expressive sounds than stock version. Sounds can get very dirty if you want them to.

The Pitchbend slider is not original.."

Circuitbenders ROLAND R8 DRUM MACHINE

"The modded R8 is very keen on brutally savage, but also sometimes strangely beautiful distortion sounds. It also excels at strange digital gurgling and shuddering sequenced effects on the longer sounds such as the cymbals and some snares. The R8 takes a little more work than most circuit bent drum machines as many of the possible patchbay connections will produce variations on distortions rather than the common effects found on similar machines, but with the R8 you find that the patching combinations do produce some interesting and more complex sounds. With most circuit bent drum machines it is easiest to produce a drum loop and then process it with the patchbay, but on the R8 it pays to take the time to produce the bent effects first, and then create a pattern specifically around those sounds..."

"We have taken this 1970's electronic device from Evans Corporation, Japan and added an additional repeat control (Dub Echo). It then was fitted into our hand-made oak cabinet (40cm wide) and given an updated control panel and new extra large dials to make hands-on operation easier. Being demonstrated in use on the aux send of the mackie 1402 mixer, the return signal is being fed back to channel 1 of the mixer without any additional eq."
