Final 'TRANCE-GATE' AMSTRAD Synthesizers (august 2013)

Published on Aug 20, 2013 squidfanny·150 videos

squidfanny on eBay (RSS)

"Well Hacked & Circuit bent AMSTRAD CKX100 Synthesizer(s).

These machines (there's two of them used in this vid) have been transformed using the power of alchemy & CMOS...

The Circuit Bending & Glitch brings forth a world of weird new sounds, chords & waveforms to experiment with.
The Step-Sequencer provides Gate, Pitch-Modulation & Unique Arpeggiator effects.

In parts of the vid, a Monotribe is synced from the Amstrad, in another part I'm using a MIDI-TRIGGER Converter to generate clock signals (for syncing) from a computer.
In another part I'm using the glitch buttons to scramble and disrupt the Amstrad's native beats & accompaniment.
At some point I'm also using the Glitch buttons to generate nasty waveforms and the step-sequencer to manipulate aforementioned waveform.

The Amstrad has a 'computer aided chord' function similar to the Omnichord, which allows the user to randomly hit any keys you want, without generating a 'dis-harmonious' note........

This little feature, when combined with the Glitch mods, will produce all manner of fascinating, ultra-harmonic and often terrifyingly sinister digital sounds.

These things blow my mind every time I play with them.

These will be the final ever 'Trance-Gate' Amstrad Synthesizers - I've reached the apex of what can be achieved with the current design (an evolved 4017 sequencer module), so I'm going back to the breadboard to try out some new ideas.

Constant and relentless experimenting is the nature of circuit bending. Being creative and trying new ideas is what makes it an art form. Without the creativity, you may as well be working as a assembly droid at a car factory....... you listening s-cat?

Anyway, I've got lot's of interesting ideas for the next Amstrad(s). Just gotta translate them into hardware now (the difficult part).

Wanna know what I'm thinking?

Well, I like the idea of fully transforming the Amstrad into an Omnichord (it shares identical chord feature). So I'm gonna build a metal touch-plate to replace the top octave of keys, along with some DIY circuitry, so that I can play it with fingers just like the Omnichord :)

I also want a dedicated arpeggiator, and an advanced sequencer circuit, which can trigger the notes as well as modulating the sounds. . . . It's a tall order, with not much space inside the machine, and limited capabilities of the Amstrad, however, the Amstrad has a MIDI output to go with the chord feature. This means that a decent step-sequencer circuit could further transform the humble Amstrad into a very powerful MIDI controller :)

Hmmm Lots of ideas and not enough hours in the night. Back soon :)"

"A classically laid out dual channel delay hides the seamless analog/digital crossover characteristics of the 0 modules. The slew rate limiter can take instantaneous jumps of delay and drag them out into sweeps as in tape delays, or leave the full bandwidth inputs to freely index time. Tracking v/octave CVs, clocks, pitch, or MIDI brings a world of new possibilities for tuned delays in physical modelling and tempo tracking at arbitrary ratios. Further to the features targeting tuned application its latency compensation will account for any modules patched into its output..."

Case Study # 1 Aphex Twin - Heliosphan

"Here is an attempt to recreate Heliosphan by Aphex Twin. All of the sequencing was done one the Yamaha RS-7000 and all sounds came from the Waldorf Micro Q Keyboard in multimode. The purpose of this recreation was to better understand complete compositions, mixing, and layering synthesizer sounds. It was also done for the sake of pushing my programming skills and pushing the limits of the Micro Q.

Most often synthesizers are used to about 10 percent of their potential because they are not programmed correctly or used multitibrally."

Arp Odyssey & Arp Quadra Nord Sample Library

"We're proud to present these brilliant samples from two legendary Arp synthesizers from the seventies, namely the Arp Odyssey and the Arp Quadra - both with tons of personality! Now in the Nord Sample Library!

The Arp Odyssey was a 2-oscillator analog synthesizer released 1972 in response to the popular (and compact) Minimoog and was a huge success for Arp. The Odyssey went through several redesigns until production ended in 1981, improving on the filters and connectivity as well as the visual layout of the synth itself. Notable features were oscillator sync and pulse-width modulation and a duo-phonic mode.

The Arp Quadra was 4 analog synths in one, with dedicated sections for Bass, Strings, Poly and Lead sounds that could be layered – a quite unique feature when released in 1978. Other notable features were the thick phase-shifting effect from the Arp Omni II synthesizer and aftertouch-like features in the upper part of the keyboard (for leads) and two independent portamento rates for each VCO!

Download the new sounds here.

The Nord Sample Library is compatible with the Nord Electro 3/4, Nord Stage 2, Nord Wave and Nord Piano 2-series."

"The classic drum machine and sequencer combo that Roger Linn created. This is the precursor machine to all the famous workstation style rhythm centers like the MPC-60, MPC-3000, SP-1200, and so on. The number of fantastic hit records recorded using this guy as the brain is too numerous to list. Some of the most famous might be "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" by Dead or Alive or anything recorded by Stock Aitken & Waterman (SAW) in the 1980s.

This particular Linn 9000 has an updated display that is quite visible. It has one of the latest OS versions from Linn, 5.17, and it also has the later power supply which has a cooling fan apparatus to keep the unit from overheating.

It's in good physical condition. The only issues I know of are the disk drive doesn't seem to be working, and the hihat pad used to not work so well. However, I just tried it out and didn't notice any problems. Given an item of this age, I can only offer it as-is, but it's working just fine right now except for the disk drive.

The good news is you can still get FULL SERVICE for Linn 9000s through Forat Electronics. If you're into that 80s sound, this is the drum machine for you no holds barred..."

Kilpatrick Audio K4815 Pattern Generator Module

Perfect Circuit Audio (RSS)

"Eurorack CV and MIDI Pattern Generator - 20HP

As its premier offering in the modular synthesizer world, the K4815 Pattern Generator by Kilpatrick Audio packs incredible power into a small 20HP Eurorack module that offers virtually unlimited creative potential for modular players. The K4815 can produce notes and varying control voltages for a wide range of musical applications. Its unique approach to music creation is sure to have you finding new melodies and rhythms never heard before. Unlike a step sequencer, where the player picks each note in a sequence, the K4815 creates sequences by combining a scale, a visual pattern (as shown on the display) and a sequence playback motion to determine the rhythms and notes that are actually played. Other parameters can adjust the note and sequence length, as well as the transposition, direction of playback, and so on.

The K4815 is fully analog and MIDI compatible. The MIDI interface is available on an internal connector and is compatible with the K1600 MIDI Converter from Kilpatrick Audio. You can even build your own MIDI interface. See: AN-1 Simple MIDI Interface for a free design. The analog connections support three inputs for connecting analog clock, and analog control of the playback direction and pattern playback reset. The CV and GATE outputs are high performance analog outputs for controlling VCOs and envelope generators. High quality 12-bit DACs ensure accurate tuning, and jumper selectable voltage offset and trimming are provided internally to allow integration with most modular equipment.

But notes are not the only thing that can be produced with the K4815. In the alternate X/Y mode, varying voltages are produced on both the CV/X OUT and GATE/Y OUT. By using the X/Y mode, the playback position creates varying voltages and MIDI control changes which can be used as a source of modulation.

The essence of any sequencer is the clock. The K4815 has a high stability internal clock which can generate a wide range of tempos. The unit also supports analog (5V) clock on the CLOCK IN connector or MIDI clock. When the internal or analog clock is used, MIDI signals are generated automatically, making the system a useful MIDI clock generator or converter.

Pattern Generation Concept

New ways of creating melodies and control signals help to break new ground in music and sound. The K4815 helps you explore new melodies and rhythms using a unique concept of generating patterns. Unlike random pattern generators or ones based on various mathematical concepts, the K4815 bases its music-making foundation on simple scales, visually-designed patterns, and intellectually-designed motions. These three elements can be controlled by the player in realtime to create an enormous variety of sounds. And it is done in a visual way that is fun to use. Everything happens on the 8x8 LED matrix, which is both a visual indicator and a conceptual view of how the system works internally. Scales, patterns and motions are all mapped to points on the matrix, which show in realtime exactly what is happening.

The K4815 concept can be thought of as three distinct layers

Scales - Underneath the 8x8 LED matrix are the notes which are assigned to each of the 64 points on the grid. The selected scale can be major or minor, large or small. These are selected with the MAJ/MIN and LARGE/SMALL switches. Only four choices might seem like a limitation, but what happens on the other two layers ultimately affects the rhythms and melodies that are produced.

Patterns - Patterns are visually designed icons, symbols and patterns which define which notes will play. They are shown in the background at all times. There are 32 patterns which can be selected with the PATTERN TYPE knob. If a point on the 8x8 LED matrix is lit, the underlying scale note is active. If the playback ball lands on that point, its note will play.

Motions - Motions define how a sequence is played. Each motion defines up to 64 steps in a sequence. Each step can land on any of the points on the 8x8 LED matrix. If a step lands on a point which is lit, a note will play. There are 64 different motions, some sequential and musically-designed, and others more abstract or geometrically-designed. By using MIDI it is possible transpose the scale, and also to start and stop motion playback with note commands, changing the K4815 into a special type of auto-arpeggiator

"High-Efficiency +12V to +5V Power Module

With more and more Eurorack modules requiring +5V to power digital circuitry, having +5V available in modular cases is becoming increasingly important. The Kilpatrick Audio KBOX Enclosure / Power Supply comes with a +5V as standard, but many manufacturers still only provide +12V and -12V. Thus we created the KONVERTER.

By using the latest in power technology, the KONVERTER draws only 260mA from your +12V supply, yet produces a full 500mA on its +5V output. With more than 80% efficiency, this means that the draw on your existing supply is minimal, and nearly no heat is produced by the module itself.

The entire module is only 1.0" W x 1.3" H and 0.5" thick. Simply plug it into your existing 16 pin Doepfer-style power bus board and all outputs will now provide +5V to modules which need it."

There are 32 preset envelopes and 16 preset pitch envelopes. Als 8 preset lfo's. The second DCO can be detuned. Some nice wavetable-like sounds can be made.
The keyboard is not velocity sensentive but over midi it is. Over midi it als responds to pitchbend and modulation."

Extended Tetrazzi String Trigger

"Here is the first test for using my Extended Tetrazzi to control a stringed instrument.
Each of the wooden barres of the Tetrazzi is patched to a single decade counter and then onto a single 12stage ripple counter.
One gate is chosen from these counters and sent via a banana patch cord to a CGS type Gate to Trigger circuit. This 9VDC trigger is then sent to a small motor with a silicon plectrum that strikes the string when the barre is pressed.
All the while the crazy Tetrazzi is still functioning as its (un)usual self.
In this video Im mostly using the gates from the 12stage ripple counters. Fast, rapid rate pulses are achieved when patched from around 1-5 oclock. More sporadic pulses are given from 7-11oclock. The strings are "prepared" here with springs and various objects.
Its really fun to play and I will build a more permanent type of setup so I can just use the Tetrazzi straight into the stringed instrument, less cables, mess and confusion.
It perhaps doesnt appear to be so in this video, but its very gestural and intuitive, I have found it to throw out some great little sequences all its own.
Sorry for the sound quality, the levels are way out, I hastily recorded this as just a document of the process. Its much better now and will put up more video of it soon."
