Yamaha DX-21, RX-11, & FB-01 Demo

Published on Aug 27, 2013 anode8·46 videos

"Here is a tune I made entirely of sounds from the Yamaha DX-21, RX-11, and FB-01 machines, with a classic detroit techno vibe. To keep with the period sound, I used a Realistic Reverb unit as well as a Shure EQ from the early 80's. Sounds used include:
DX-21:
FM Square
5th String
custom Organ
custom string/pad
pink noise
RX-11 drum sounds
FB-01:
Electric Drum (sub kick)
Solid Bass (aka Lately Bass)"

via Laurentide SynthWorks

"Oddly enough, the Sonic-Potions LXR is the first hardware drum synth I've owned. I've got a bunch of stuff on the computer, but that kind of music creation has always been creatively constricting for me.

Anyway, I recorded a new demo with some devices we build (MFOS Soundlab MKII, Hex Inverter Sympleseq & Sonic-Potions LXR). It's accompanied with a Minimoog Voyager OS and a Juno-106. The LXR is generating the clock which is being sent to a Kenton Pro-Solo II MIDI 2 CV, which is then sending the clock to the Sympleseq.

Enjoy and thanks for watching!"

"For sale is a rare Sequential Circuits Instruments Prophet VS vintage analog/digital synthesizer. This is one of my favorite synths of all time, the first synth that had Vector Synthesis. Every aspect is amazing, the arp/sequencer, filters, waveforms and especially the joystick. Perfect for ambient pads, effects, soundtrack composition, but also with analog acid basslines, leads and more. This synth is in excellent near mint shape and fully functional. This one has been restored by Wine Country recently (the original SCI guys), so you know it will be good to go for years to come. The only issue is the slider is loose and breaks off, but you can still use it fine since it fits into place (as shown in the picture)..."

It was their plan to have that that manufactuer design a synthesizer more targeted at the Japanese buyer. This Japanese company created an 8-voice bi-timbral version of the Six-Trak. They added a 5-octave, 61-note (C-C) keyboard to it and sold it in Japan, calling it the Pro-8. Sequential, liking what the Japanese manufacturer had done with their design and worrying that they might market their synth with one of their competitors (ie. Korg), asked for some design changes and a name change, and sold the Japanese-made synth as the Split-8..."

It is an ipad programmer/ template for the hardware Novation Super Bass Station analog bass synthesizer. In order to use it, you have to have TB MIDI stuff installed on your iPad. At under $5, it is reasonably priced, especially in comparison to Lemur, its closest competitor (like Lemur it can send NRPN and SYSEX MIDI messages so it is ideal for hardware synths). It works fine on my iPad 1 with a generic camera connection kit, going through the USB port on a remote sl master controller.

This is an ipad programmer/ template for the Novation Super Bass Station hardware analog bass synthesizer. In order to use it, you have to have Lemur installed on your iPad, which us around $50 in the app store. Is it worth the price if you are just controlling a super bass station? maybe. Though gimmicky, the physics engine unleashes an animal living inside the SBS that makes it really fun. If you are looking for straight up control, no gimmicks, take a look at my 'TB MIDI stuff' template for the SBS. It controls all the same parameters without physics, has some good features of its own and is $5. Lemur and this template work fine on my iPad 1 with a generic camera connection kit, going through the USB port on a remote sl master controller and into the SBS. Have fun!"

Trax RetroWave Analogue Synthesizer Demo Track, "Manic Fly"

Published on Aug 27, 2013 traxcontrols·11 videos

"This short demo piece is a "sound-alike" of a well-known late 70's Euro synthpop hit. All of the sounds you hear (including the drums) were produced by the Trax RetroWave R-1 Analogue Synthesizer, played by hand in real time, using a Roland RS-5 keyboard to provide the MIDI information via a standard MIDI OUT connection.

The piece was mixed down to stereo from 8 separate audio tracks on a Tascam DP-01FX digital multitrack recorder. The only special effect used is reverberation.

The excellent footage used in the video was provided free by Beachfront B-Roll: Free Stock Footage and OrangeHDcom, whose other work can be seen on YouTube.

What is Paraphonic?

Ideally, for full 'polyphony' in an analogue synth you effectively need a complete analogue synth per voice. That is VCO, VCF, EG and VCA. For an analogue synth this is an expensive affair. So a few synths were Paraphonic (for example the Korg Monopoly). This mean that you still had a VCO per voice, but they shared a single VCF, VCA and EG. This provided cost and space savings.

Why is Polymath using the paraphonic method?

I chose to go Para' not so much to save money or space, but because to make a truly polyphonic modular synth becomes a patcher's nightmare. I know, I have done it using discrete modules. You end up with a sea of patch cables - and you can barely get to any of the synth's knobs. I wanted Polymath to be a fully patchable, versatile analogue synth, as well as being polyphonic - not just a one trick pony. Going Para' was a good comprise, allowing it to both be manageable (patching wise) and polyphonic.

There's another reason it's Paraphonic

The way synth's such as the Korg Monopoly handle polyphony give it it's own kind of sound (that can't be put into words here). By making Polymath a paraphonic synth gives it that same sound characteristic that few other synths have.

In poly mode, as you press and release a single key, the synth will cycle through its four VCOs. If you have a slightly different setting on each VCO, as they cycle, you will get a different timbre as each note is played. This sounds pretty amazing - something you will be familiar with if you are lucky enough to own a Mnopoly, Oberheim 4 Voice, etc.

Polymath is 'Fully Modular'

- in the sense that every thing can be detached and repatched. It doesn't have to be used as a 'poly synth' or a traditional 'mono synth'. It can be repatched to do whatever you wish. Circuits can be isolated and used in conjunction with other modular synths or synths such as the Telemark.

The position of important patch points have been placed close together, where possible, so shorter patch leads can be used that won't obscure too much front panel. For example, Mixer Out jack is placed next to the VCF Audio In jack. This means that it can be patched up to be a mono/poly synth with a minimal amount of cables or front panel-obsucring!

Some voltages are pre-patched in a sense, via quick and easy to use front panel pot's or switches, but they can all be effectively removed from the circuit by setting them to 'zero'

Some Additional Cool Features

Detune - This flattens VCO2 and sharpens VCO4, so that in Unison mod you can easily 'fatten' the sound.

There are 'global' PWM and Pitch Modulation controls, so that, if for example, you want to apply vibrato to all VCOs equally, you can do that with one cable rather than 4.

Spring Reverb - instantly transforms the sound. This doesn't have to be patched in as a traditional effect, at the end of the signal chain. Sounds cool when inserted between the Mixer output and VCF input."
