Inverted Grapefruit - for Emu modular synthesizer, and drum set with electronics

Published on Jan 14, 2013 coolbluefire·21 videos

"A performance of my composition "Inverted Grapefruit", at the UCSC graduate composition colloquium.

This is a piece for Emu modular synthesizer, and drum set with electronics. The electronics on the drum set are a Max/MSP patch, miking, korg nano slider, and soft step midi foot controller.

Listen with headphones, or with nice bass-y speakers. Get all that analog deep bass."

"For your consideration is the Roland TR-606 analog drum machine with Exfade Mk.II modifications.
The 606 has been used in a smoke free studio and shows minor cosmetic wear(see pics).
The unit has been fully tested, and is fully functional.
The new controls are:
Bass Drum: Decay, Pitch, Tone, Envelope Tune
Snare: Decay, Pitch, Tone, Noise
L.Tom: Pitch, Tone, Bass boost
H.Tom: Pitch, Decay, Level
Cymbal: Pitch, Decay, LBF, HBF
Hats: O.Hat & C.Hat Decay, LBF, BPF
-Individual outs
-MIDI to din/din to MIDI sync
This particular unit has the Midi/din sync option installed. The individual outs are on 1/4"jacks on the back panel. Also, there's memory installed now so that it doesn't require battery changes and will save data while unplugged. I also had Exfade install an 1/8" clock output in the rear, as well as a modification for better separation of the high and low toms. The Midi in/out is for sync purposes only, the drums themselves can't be played from an external sequencer but fortunately the 606 has the best drum sequencer Roland ever put on a TR machine.
Included in the listing is the Roland TR-606 with Exfade Mk.II modifications as pictured."

Introducing Modular - The Synth App for iPad and iPhone

Published on Aug 30, 2013 PulseCodeInc·15 videos

"Modular looks, acts, and sounds like a hardware modular synthesizer to give you features that musicians want such as pulse width modulation, oscillator sync, 4 pole ladder filters, and 1v/oct filter tracking. Traditional modular systems are expensive and out of reach for the average artist. Modular is here to bridge that gap and allow everyone the opportunity to use these powerful synthesizers."

The Simonsound - The Beam B/W In the Shadow of the Skylon Featuring

Trios - Tristram Cary (edit)

Published on Aug 30, 2013 the simonsound·35 videos

"A rare performance of the chance composition created by electronic music pioneer Tristram Cary.

Trios combines a scored performance on EMS VCS3 synthesiser (in this case prerecorded using a EMS Synthi AKS and played back on reel to reel tape) and two performers using dice to randomly decide which tracks to play from two vinyl records. For this performance CD's were used in place of the vinyl.

The dice and holders in this performance were Tristrams own, donated to Ian Helliwell.

Tape prepared by Vicky Fenlon, Ian Helliwell and Simon James. Performed by Helliwell and James at Hackney Picture House, London on 17/03/13.

Additional camera work by Stuart Heaney. Directed by Ian Helliwell."

A fantastical Monorail journey in sound

This latest release from The Simonsound is a radiophonic ride aboard their imaginary 'SS Mk I Monorail', taking in five out of this world destinations along the way. Board the Monorail and be whisked to Outer Space World, Underwater World, Inner Space, Robot World and The Land of Myths and Beasts. Exploring the more experimental aspects of their previous work, 'The Beam' is a carefully crafted electronic collage mixing Buchla, Moog and EMS synthesisers, with tape manipulated percussion and acoustic sources.

Like a souvenir record from a mid century World¹s Fair, ŒThe Beam¹ follows in the footsteps of early electronic composers such as Raymond Scott, Tristram Cary and Tom Dissevelt.

The B-side, 'In the Shadow of the Skylon' is an oscillating ode to a long lost London landmark and futuristic structure created for the Festival of Britain in 1951. Hovering over the South Bank like a UFO, the Skylon pointed into space like a sign post for what was to come. Sadly the Skylon never got to see the future it aimed to represent as it was torn down at the end of the Festival by a petty Conservative government. ŒIn the Shadow of the Skylon¹ celebrates its short optimistic life.

In addition to the standard release, there will also be 25 'Monorail Pilot's Packs' which will include the 10" coloured vinyl, a printed map, booklet and Monorail ticket, a sew on 'Pilot's Patch', a 1/4 inch magnetic tape loop and a CD featuring an extended trip into Outer Space World and outtakes from the project. These will all be housed in a letter press printed pack featuring the Simonsound Transit Authority logo on the front."

Also check out a Live Buchla 200e performance on The Simonsound here.

Rancho Electro - Poolside sunset synth jams in Ojai, CA

Note this is a live performance and not a synth fest.  Normally this would not go up but, it will be a chance to see some gear live that you might not otherwise get to see.

Gear at the event will include: EMS Synthi, ARP2600, MOOG Little Phatty, Analog4, modular gear as well as some more esoteric instruments.

via Mikael Jorgenen

"n September 2013, I will be hosting three Sunday afternoon, free, poolside Synthesizer Jam parties at The Ojai Rancho Inn in Ojai, CA.

I’ve asked some friends to bring some gear and help us help you get some sunset synth vibes cooking.

The music will begin at 6pm.

09.15.2013 – Esteemed fellow Wilco travelers Nathaniel Murphy and Joshua Goldsmith will bring their intellectual funk to the poolside proceedings.
09.22.2013 – Ojai local Dave Palmer will school us all on the distortion free oscillations of wavetable synths. Xander Singh shall bring his electron squeezing machines & we’ll see what that sounds like.
09.29.2013 – To celebrate the release of my new record “Mikael Jorgensen & Greg O’Keeffe” we’ll have vinyl copies of it and the elusive “ARMZ” 7″ on purple translucent vinyl for sale as well as the debut of “QUINDAR” featuring James Merle Thomas on lozenges and concepts.
I hope that some of you fellow west coasters might join us for some poolside electronic music at sundown in the Ojai valley.

Checklist:

Bathing Costumes
Blanket / beach chairs
BYO Wine / Spirits / Beer
A Sweater (or “Jumper” if you will), for when the sun goes down, it gets cozily chilly if you can’t find purchase around the fire-pits.
See you soon."

"Udo Hanten was born in Krefeld (North Rhine Westfalia, Germany), in 1956. His first instrument was an acoustic guitar, but it was the electronic possibilities that Udo could achieve with that guitar plus a pickup, a tube radio, a spring reverb and a reel to reel recorder that led him choose his career as an electronic musician and producer later on. In the late '60s he started in music, in late '70s he started to work with audio performances and installations, in the early '80s he started to work with video and in the mid-'80s he started with Laserworks. Udo is in the business with all those art forms since then!..."

4ms QCD (Quad Clock Distributor) Sneak Preview

Published on Aug 30, 2013 4mspedals·76 videos

"Another sneak preview of the upcoming Quad Clock Distributor (QCD) eurorack synth module from 4ms. The QCD is a four-channel CV-controlled Clock Divider/Multiplier with individual Resets on each channel. Each channel also has a Div/Mult knob that goes from /64 to x64. The Expander module adds Pulse Width control via CV and knobs.

In this patch, the QCD is triggering every sound event. The red and black channels modulate various aspects of the "lead" and "rave siren" sound. The 4ms PEG plus the Doepfer A-156 quantizer is used for the "sequencer" (both pinged/triggered by the QCD). The kick and hi-hat are triggered by the rising and falling edges of the Red and Green channels respectively. Both these sounds are made by running the QCD output into a Machinedrum trigger input (no sequencing is done by the Machinedrum, it's all done by the QCD!)

In the back of the QCD, there's a header to connect to the QPLFO (Quad Pingable LFO) to drive triangle/saw/ramp waves that are timed to the QCD's clocks."

"Moog the Rogue synthesizer, made in 1981. This is a great bass-synthesizer with two osc's, portamento, two bend wheels, noise, lfo, great filter, sync and so on. Optical it's in nice condition (see photo's) with only some minor scratches on it. It's missing the rubber foots at the bottom. "Unlike other desktop FatMan synths, this one has a few customizations:

The 12VAC is connected through a standard jack instead of directly wired to the wall-wart.
The filter is switchable between lowpass and highpass modes via a switch next to the filter AR / ASR switch (typically the FatMan is lowpass-only).
The 555 ICs have been upgraded to CMOS 7555 ICs
The pitch range has an extended low-end (on the order of single cycles-per-second, perfect for filter blips)."

"One of Manchester's finest 808 state perform Nimbus.I think this was from Liverpool's Albert Dock."

Major synth spotting: Oberheim Four Voice System (FVS), ARP 2600, Odyssey & Sequencer, Moog Memorymoog, Minimoog, Prodigy & Opus 3, Roland JD-800.  I can't place the synth under the Minimoog.  I know I've seen it before.  It's not a Steiner Parker Synthacon and it's not the PPG mono synth.  You can see the front panel knobbage at 3:03 (303?). It looks like a Powertran but hinged up. I thought it might be an EML Synkey but it has more knobs. I know that synth. What is it?

Update: answer via Colin f in the comments below.  I was going to add it to the post but didn't want to spoil it for anyone trying to guess.  The answer didn't come to until I was finally drifting off to sleep last night.

Pictured above is the voice changer

"This module was originally used as a desktop hotel switchboard. It contains a circuit bent toy voice changer which creates octaves and 'robot sounds.' I have added a modification which allows variable sampling and playback speeds of audio fed into it."

Directly above is the sequencer

"Each side of the switchboard contains a Music From Outer Space ten step sequencer, with some added features such as external trigger inputs and pulse outs on each step. They can run independently or in sync with each other."

Directly above is the synthesizer

"The synthesizer currently contains VCS, VCF, and envelope modules by Ken Stone and Music From Outer Space. It also contains the MFOS noise cornucopia module for various percussive sounds. Sequencer is right below it."
