ANI - Weekly iPad Live Looping #songrequests (2013.09.04)

Published on Sep 4, 2013 Amy Lee·28 videos

"This week's #songrequests is going to a slower, more melancholy place. I asked you for what instruments I should use and the ones that seemed to fit into this style included: banjo, ukulele, violin, trumpet, water in glasses, hydraulophone, bouzouki, duduk, shenai. I was able to work in some guitar-ish sounds, plucked strings, violin, a lonely-sounding lead, and a glass harp.

Send in your suggestions:

Intellijel HUB Quad Multiple 3.5mm Jacks

via Intellijel

"Intellijel HUB:

-4 channel passive mult
-Durable plastic enclosure
-High quality gold plated jacks mounted on a pcb
-Fully serviceable (just undo two screws to access the jacks)
-Super strong rare earth neodymium magnets on both sides of the enclosure so that you can magnetically stack them or conveniently attach them to metal or magnetic strips on your case (can even attach to screws).
-Price $10
-Available immediately from http://www.intellijel.com/other-products/

The idea is to allow you to turn any cable into a mult. Connect any Eurorack compatible patch cable to the HUB and then leave them hanging off your patch or magnetically attached to strategic points. This makes more room for the user interface of your modules and complex patches are easy to trace through."

I hope they are light.

"The bottom white keys are for the normal organ section. They are like the white keys on a keyboard with no sharps for flats. The fun part is the sequencer section. The color pegs are different notes. If you take the pegs out and plug them in you can make various sequences. The two sliders on each side control the speed and the pitch of the sequence. It can go so incredibly fast and high pitched. The only thing I can describe the sound to is Pac-Man.

Some cool things about the Muson Synthesizer..
You can see it in Devo's 'My Baby Gave Me A Suprise' video. Also, it was used in some early recordings by the synth-punk band Crash Course In Science..."

"Very special distorted sounds through the unique filter + reso.
Lo, band and hi pass filters can be unsed in any combination which creates very special sounds with resonance.
Now for the FX:
The signal goes in UA LA610II tube preamp, mixing desk
The pure REVERB is a KLARKTEKNIK DN50 stereo spring reverb -- an wasome spring reverb I almost always use.
In the middle I used a multi FX -- the EVENTIDE ECLIPSE. You can recognize is for the panned delays.
Many takes are recorded with the Mono's mono signal through the DIAMOND MEMORY LANE 2,LA610... and the DN50 in the mixing desk. The Diamond is an awsome bucket brigade delay. Very natural, very dubby, especially in feedbacks."

"The Dynacord SRV-66 Vocoder is a liscensed clone of the SYNTOVOX 222 made by the legendary Dutch company Synton. It is also labelled ECHOLETTE SEV-66. All the three vocoders are identical.
They have 20 bands (10 for analysis and 10 for synthesis) and a voiced-unvoiced detector. The comprehensibility of speech is very good.
Is to be used very easily and intuitively.
The sound is much better than that of its peers: Korg VC-10 and Roland SVC-350.
The recordings were made with SHURE SM58 or MACHINEDRUM UW-2 fed in the SPEECH inputs and SIEL ORCHESTRA 2 as the carrier. So the basic signal is all SRV-66 -- no mixer is involved!"

The built quality is so so. Could be better -- especially the pots and knobs also the waveform sliders with a quarter of the way up you obtain 50 percent of the volume the last 25 percent of the way make almost no difference in loudness. Waldorf Microwave (1/Rev.1) w CEM 3389 & Live Tweaking w Access Controller

Uploaded on Oct 20, 2011 LESINDES·94 videos

"The original first version of fabulous Microwave with Rev. 1: The better, the fatter, the meatier one. All tracks have passed the tube circuits of Thermionic Culture Vulture and were recorder directly to dic WITHOUT any additional FX.

It was mixed digitally and in order to regain the former peak levels for the score was used a limiter. This is it. So the sounds might sound a little crude and rough but already worthwhile. What might they sound like after careful FX treatment???

Part of its mighty sound are the analogue Curtis filters. This final analogue section is the reason for the BIG sound GAP between the MICROWAVE and the fully digital MICROWAVE II which is really a laugh.

BTW: I never liked the Red Knob!"

Waldorf Microwave 1 Rev 1 OS 2 -- live tweaking w Access Controller

Published on Jan 25, 2013

"This is a demo that shows how sensisively and deeply you can influence the parameters of the Waldorf Microwave with the RARE ACCESS controller. Mostly you cannot hear that the parameters are not continuous but stepped -- only in volume (resolution only 7 steps) and in octaves/semitones naturally it is clearly audible.
This is not a genious peformance but I wantetd to keep it in its original shape so that you can for yourself how quick the changes are made and how fluent the result is -- Starting with a mallet going over kick drums and very deep bass sound through a vast space odyssey ending in mallets and pads.
That is done with a single sound program, no layer, multimode!!!"

"MELVILLE, NY, September 5, 2013 - Korg announces the KR mini rhythm machine. Designed for guitarists, bassists, pianists or any musician looking for easy rhythm accompaniment, it features nostalgic looks and a simple design focused on easy, push-button control. The KR mini is also lightweight, can run on batteries and has a built-in speaker, allowing it to provide a backing rhythm pattern anywhere at any time.

Playing a rhythm pattern is easy and intuitive, with all controls on the surface. A total of 60 diverse rhythm patterns are available to accompany any practice session or performance. A wide range of genres is included, such as 8-beat, 16-beat, rock and pop, with six patterns for each genre. Alternatively, users can tap in their own beats via a simple record function. There are also eight song patterns containing drum parts that are several measures in length. In addition, a chain function allows the ability to arrange favorite rhythm patterns and fill-ins to create complete songs.

An optional pedal switch allows the user's foot to perform functions such as start/stop and for triggering fill-ins, providing smooth control over the KR mini in a performance environment. Some details via Roman on Muff's:

"we (Roman Filippov and Alex Pleninger) are glad to introduce the result of almost a year of development, coding, electronic tests and just complex work in general - Sputnik Defect Processor Model 289.

this device is crafted to precisely comply the modular standards of Buchla Electric Music Box better known as Buchla 200 and Buchla 200e.

the core of the 289 is a Digital Signal Processor which takes all the computations in sound transforming and generating. around it one may observe some controllable analogue parameters such as Balance and Regeneration, they are independent for each audio channel. both DSP cores have 8 independent Programs or Algorithms per core and each such algorithm has three voltage controllable parameters, varying from program to program. each core can be expanded via another 8 programs on external EEPROM chip. one of the most exciting feature is the variable Timebase which affects a lot of nuances in every algorithm's behavior.

apart from conventional stuff like reverbs, delays and various modulations the Model 289 offers quite unique solutions such as fm-synthesis, wide sonic range generators, human throat modelling, simple spectrum transfer facility, pitch-to-cv conversion, pitch shifting, audio looping, several sound destructors, pitch class generator, karplus-strong synthesis and many others, including some auxiliary programs. and the program list is ever-growing, new programs are always on the way.

we hope this module will take its place in every Buchla system whether it is a baby 4U boat or two 18U cabinets mighty electronic workbench.

ALGORITHMS

OSCILLATORS

we offer two oscillator programs, both of them work in audio range from 25 to approximately 3000 hz.

the controls are the following:
x - pitch.
y - wavemorphing.
z - wavefolding.

audio inputs 1 and 2 support amplitude and frequency modulations respectively.
on the output 1 you'll get final waveform morphed and folded, if any.
the second output provides the sub-oscillator one octave below the main one.
as for y and z controls, the first one continuously morphs the osc core (saw or triangle, depending on chosen program) from saw through triangle to half-inverted saw or from triangle through sine to square. in the case the wavemorphing is set to square, the wavefolding performs as pwm controller. in any other situations z-pot folds the wave in a manner of mathematical reflection at the given threshold. all these are pretty straight-forward, even if sounds a bit messy. you may observe the oscillators behavior in the attached [above] video footages.

Genesis of an Instrument: The Pioneering Work of Donald Buchla at New Form's Festival

Donald Buchla Performance / Q&A:
Friday September 13, 7-10
with: Sarah Davachi and Richard Smith

In 1963, Berkeley-based designer and instrument builder Donald Buchla began constructing his first electronic musical instruments. This year celebrates the 50thanniversary of his pioneering and highly innovative contributions to the field of electronic music, and New Forms Festival is very excited to welcome Mr. Buchla to Vancouver for what is sure to be a highly-anticipated performance at VIVO Media Arts Centre. This historic event will also feature an extensive exhibition of the most complete collection of Buchla instruments in existence, offering the public a unique and extremely rare opportunity to experience the union of the maker and his creations.

Reflecting a background in music, physics, and physiology, Buchla’s approaches to instrument design and sonic experimentation are known for being multi-faceted and highly inventive, particularly in relation to his interest in interfaces that bridge the communicative gap between man and machine. His work includes early voltage-controlled systems such as the 100 and 200 modular series, the Music Easel performance system, digital-analog hybrids such as the TouchĂ©, gesture-controlled instruments such as the Lightning, Thunder, and Marimba Lumina, and his most recent project, the 200e Electric Music Box. He has worked with storied institutions and organizations such as the California Institute of the Arts, the San Francisco Tape Music Center, and New York’s Electric Circus, and has collaborated with a number of prominent experimental musicians including David Rosenboom, Suzanne Ciani, Morton Subotnick, George Lewis, Anthony Braxton, and David Wessel."

CutUDown - A synth blues cover of a Johnny Cash song "God's gonna cut you down"

Published on Aug 28, 2013 NomNomChomsky·1 video

"Performed mostly live on The Moogenstein! Shot on camera phones and edited in After Effects (which, yes was entirely the wrong tool for such a simple task)

Played on an Akai MPC1000 running JJOS2XL, sequencing a Moog Voyager RME and lots of Mooger Fooger guitar pedals for just that juicy sound. And if that wasn't enough, recorded onto 4 track cassette tape using a Tascam 424. Mixed in Reaper and mastered in Izotope Ozone 5.

If you have any suggestions for what songs to cover next. Let me know in the comments"

"Completed a Mutable Instruments 'Yellow Magic' (LP2 + Delay) build. First time I've gotten to play with this filter. It is designed around the MS-20 LP filter with a Lo-Fi PT2399 Filter Chip added. Aside from the Polivoks filter board, this is the dirtiest of the analog boards MI offers. Lots of clipping and dirtiness.

The demo is accompanied by an MFOS Soundlab Mini-Synth MKII ran through a Moogerfooger 104M."

Jean Michel Jarre Laser Harp sound by Elka Synthex

Published on Sep 4, 2013 Magnus GladĂ©n·30 videos

"This is the classic Laser Harp sound Jean Michel Jarre use. It is actually a preset in the Elka Synthex, number 46. Jarre used other presets on the Synthex right out of the box.

To create a laser harp sound, synchronize OSC2 to OSC1 and here comes the secret why many fail to create the sound...

The sound uses Glide with Speed and Amount to modulate pitch of the synchronized oscillator. Many people think that an envelope is modulating pitch but it is Glide.

The sound also use pulse wave on OSC1 and OSC2 use OSC1 to PWM and ring modulator.

Sorry for the sound quality and I don't know which key the song goes."

Pics of the inside below. Check out the wires nest!

"Up for sale, a very unique and elaborate early 1980s synthesizer of mysterious origins. Due to the lack of resistors, capacitors and other circuit elements typically found in analog synthesizers, we believe this is very likely a primitive digital synthesizer. This mad scientist's laboratory of knobs, switches and multi-colored "spaghetti" wire is clearly a prototype or Mensa scholar's tinker toy, leaving very few clues as to who made it and for what purpose!

Featuring an array of discontinued and valuable chips, this synthesizer needs to be connected to at least one of the pictured multi-pin cables to produce sound, although we lack the tools to properly plug in or test this keyboard. This keyboard is being sold as-is, with no returns as we can make no claims as to the working condition of the unit and offer no assistance to the buyer on how to properly restore or operate it.

The enclosure features stylish hardwood ends like your favorite Moog or ARP and all of the wiring is extremely meticulous and elaborate. We've dubbed it the Jackson Pollock of wiring jobs!

Several of the main varieties of chips found in this synth sell for $10-20 on their own and this unit has great value in parts alone! Here's a rundown of a few of the more notable chips in the synth.

Toshiba TMM2016ap-10. This chip is SRAM (static RAM). Programmable and non-volatile (won't erase when turned off). More expensive than common DRAM and used in military applications in addition to synths, etc.

AMD EPROM AM2732DC - Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory - Potentially involved with sound shaping and preprogrammed sounds

Intel D273284F2 - another EPROM; same as above

NEC D70116C - This is likely the CPU microprocessor. This may be the brains of the unit.

2732 series chips - based on Texas Instrument designs. Used in speech synthesizers..."

"Monophonic analog synthesizer released in 1979.
In excellent cosmetic condition, fully working order, few minor scratches on the wood panels.
Recently professionally serviced.

The CS-20M features 2 VCOs with a 6-octave range and 3 waveforms. The VCA contains an extra sine-only oscillator, and a white noise generator is also included.
Like on the other early CS-series synths, a resonant 12dB/octave multimode VCF is available as the filter. It is switchable between high-, low- and band-pass (the last being 6dB/oct). The VCF contains its own ADSR envelope generator plus controls for cut-off and resonance.

The single LFO can be used for PWM. An internal memory is available, holding up to 8 user programmable patches. Other features include brilliance control, portamento, pitch bend, glide and glissando. For external control there is a CV/gate interface."

"Comes with 5 modules: Kick, Snare, and 3 Toms
Also comes with standard 3 prong power cable.

It has been tested and it's in good working condition.
All 5 modules output sound when triggered by a drum pad. The drum sounds change with different hit velocities.
All of the knobs on the different modules turn fine and alter the drum sounds when in mode 2.
None of the knobs are missing their original gray caps!

I only found a couple of issues with the unit:
- One push button preset on one of the drum modules doesn't engage.
- Some of the other preset push buttons are not level (they are sitting slightly bent one direction, see photos.. hardly noticeable)

Besides those couple of things, everything else seems to be in great working order..."

"This circa 1983 Texas Instruments TI-99/4A home computer includes the PHP1500 Speech Synthesizer and manual, original AC power cord and RF television connector, comprehensive "User's Reference Guide" full of TI-BASIC programs, and six game cartridges (excuse me, "command modules"). The system comes in its original box. Module titles include Addition and Subtraction 1 and 2, Learning Fun, Scott Adams' Adventure, and Reading Fun and Speech Editor, which both include their instruction manuals. The unit was fully tested and ran basic programs and all six command modules without any glitches. Coemetically, it shows considerable wear and numerous scuffs and scratches on the aluminum face, but it is clean and has no dents, cracks or structural damage. Its a really fun trip back to 30 years ago. Using it reminded me of the countless times I threw my joystick at it when playing TI Invaders or flipping out when the power went out after typing about 50 lines of BASIC!.."

Native Instruments introduces iMASCHINE Artist Expansions

"Berlin, September 4, 2013 – Native Instruments recently released RAW WORKS – a signature iMASCHINE Expansion created by in-demand producer Nottz. RAW WORKS is the third in a growing series of signature Artist Expansions exclusive to iMASCHINE – a complete, portable groove sketchpad for iPad and iPhone. Other Expansions in the series include sound packs from acclaimed DJ/producers Kerri Chandler and DJ Godfather. The full range of iMASCHINE Artist Expansions can be purchased in the iMASCHINE In-App store for $0.99 / 0.89 € / ¥ 85. iMASCHINE is available at the Apple App Store for $4.99 / 4.49 € / ¥ 450. [iMaschine - NATIVE INSTRUMENTS GmbH]

RAW WORKS delivers five projects and five kits of Nottz’s signature sound exclusively to iMASCHINE. Renowned for his work with Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg, Kanye West, and J Dilla, Nottz is known for his authentic, old school production style. For this Expansion, Nottz sampled live sessions with his own musicians, then handpicked sounds from the recordings to create a set of gritty drum sounds and melodic phrases. The Expansion’s deep, raw basslines were processed with Nottz’s sampling expertise, delivering a key component of the producer’s signature sound.

KAOZ THEORY brings the unmistakable sound of Kerri Chandler to iMASCHINE – the deep, grooving house style that has made him one of the most respected artists on the underground scene for over 20 years. The Expansion contains a total of six kits, two instruments and two full projects. The three Drum Kits are made up of dirty, analog kicks, snares, hats, and claps. A Melodic Kit provides the trademark Chandler synth chords while two Special Kits deliver basses, vocal samples, synth stabs and keys. iMASCHINE users can also access two instruments and two full iMASCHINE projects created by Chandler himself – fully-conceived musical material available only in this iMASCHINE Expansion.

DIRTY KNOCK was created by DJ Godfather – the Detroit DJ, producer, label owner, and founding father of ghetto tech/Detroit bass. The genre combines elements of techno, house, Miami bass and turntablism, and has in turn influenced juke and trap music. Four projects and five kits deliver an array of rough basslines, analog sound effects, dirty drums, high synth stabs, rumbling 808s, and tight snares true to DJ Godfather’s signature sound. The additional melodic kit comprises one shot beeps and sweeps for giving tracks an added nuanced flair.

All samples provided come in uncompressed .WAV format (16-bit 44.1kHz) and have been processed and tweaked for immediate use. Tracks created with iMASCHINE Artist Expansions can also be exported to MASCHINE and MASCHINE MIKRO for additional editing and finalization.

iMASCHINE is available at the Apple App Store for $4.99 / 4.49 € / ¥ 450. [iMaschine - NATIVE INSTRUMENTS GmbH]
