Héliopause by RADIOKLOW - A Tribute to Voyager 1 on the Access Virus Ti

Published on Sep 12, 2013 RADIOKLOW·88 videos

What's interesting is Marc-Henri aka RADIOKLOW composed and then published this piece earlier today just before news broke that Voyager 1 has indeed entered interstellar space.  That's some great timing.  :)

"In 1977, The NASA launched two space shuttles, Voyager 1 and 2, to explore the solar system and reach if possible its limits to cross them and travel in the interstellar space. The last news about them let us think they are now somewhere on this border called heliopause, may be just one step beyond. From time time to time, I have a though for them as I would of distant twins who would be brothers of mine, with a deep tenderness. This is the reason why I composed this piece as a tribute to them and their journey to the unknown. Heliopause was composed for keyboard Virus TI, film and music by Marc-Henri Arfeux"

And the news today via NASA:

"Voyager 1 has entered interstellar space. The NASA spacecraft, which rose from Earth on a September morning 36 years ago, has traveled farther than anyone, or anything, in history. Now Voyager 1 is in the space between the stars. How did Voyager 1 get there? How do we know and where is it going? For more information on humanity's first emissary to what lies beyond, explore the videos, images and stories below..."

Follow-up to Héliopause posted here.

"Siralia is the second piece I composed on sunday 8th of September 2013, as a tribute to the two Voyagers traveling in the distant border of the solar system, without knowing at that moment the NASA would announce officially the crossing of this border by Voyager I who - I say "who" instead of "which" because I feel these ships are part of us an kind of distant brothers - now travels in the interstellar space, first of all the human spaceships to explore this open region of the unknown.

Siralia precisely refers to this unbelievable extraordinary journey in the outer space, according to my sonic and visual imagination. When I composed it, only knowing the two Voyagers where traveling in the Héliopoause I wanted to jump one step beyond to anticipate this great adventure in the interstellar void. Now Voyager I runs and glides in this mysterious ocean of silence and my composition becomes a message to "him" !

I called this composition "Siralia", for two reasons. Sirius is the nearest star that can be reached from the solar system, and it is also the title Karlheinz Stockhausen gave to the first opera of his Week of Light cycle, in 1976. At that time I was 14 years old and discovering the contemporary electroacoustic of the seventies with passion, having been initiated to this music by my father. The first record I heard in the early seventies was "Le Voyage (The Journey) by Pierre Henry, a major composition of 1963. Before that, in the late sixties, when I was 8 or 9, my father would often play with his radio at the extreme regions of the short waves band to produce strange sounds he compared to tibetan music, and I was found of it ! I think this is the first root of my passion for electroacoustic music and wanted here to pay this tribute to my father who will be happy to be quoted here for this beautiful reason, as well as my mother who will be very pleased to read here this little but essential anecdote about him !

Siralia was composed on my favorite Keyboard Virus TI. The film is done after personal videos and pictures treated for the circumstance as well as various pictures of astronomy, including images of Voyager, of the message it carries and of star Sirius, also treated by various means to produce this film."

Modded Synthwerks MG-1 Pushbutton Module

"Just finished testing this custom Mod of a MG-1 for a user in Japan (Shout-out to Reppiks on Tokyo!). The mod replaces the multiple jacks with 2 independent manual CV sources. This allows some neat things when patched into the rest of the MG-1. This one tested out fine so I will start on the second one next (he wanted two of them)."

"Perfect working condition, very good to excellent cosmetic condition for its age aside from the usual wood panel scratches and wear. This is a VERY unique sounding synth with an amazing set of functions. Two analog oscillators, ring mod, tunable noise circuit, multiple LFOs that can drive the filter and/or the pitch, bend effects, portamento, high pass and low pass filters with extra expand contols. Nice set of waveforms and the oscllators can be detuned or tuned at intervals and there's an audio in jack (I tested it and it works). From what I've read on the internet, only 500 were made. It came out after the K-2, but before the MS-20, so I think this is somewhat of a late 70s missing link. Korg had their own unique approach to analog synthesizers in the mid-70s and this is a particularly interesting example..."

Audulus 2.3 Soups Up Polyphonic Sub-Patches

Audulus 2.3 - Sub-Patch Polyphony from Taylor Holliday on Vimeo.

"Audulus 2.3 for iPad and Mac is OUT NOW! Audulus 2.3 soups up how sub-patches work with respect to polyphony.

Now, sub-patches operate like visual groupings of nodes. This means that instead of the entire sub-patch being replicated per-voice, polyphonic connections are carried through. As a consequence, you can now have a sub-patch with monophonic input and polyphonic output (or vice versa).

"Audulus is the only polyphonic modular synthesizer on iOS," says Audulus developer Taylor Holliday. "And now with our souped-up polyphonic sub-patches in Audulus 2.3, we're moving toward being able to express an entire polyphonic synthesizer within a sub-patch."

Audulus for iPad is available on the App Store for $9.99, 30% off to celebrate the improvements to Sub-Patches.

Audulus for Mac is available on the Mac App Store for $29.99

Permeation; a film by Arius Blaze Kickstarter Campaign

Arius Blaze is the man behind Folktek.

Via the Kickstarter campaign.

"a film by Arius Blaze about the creative body and the beauty, obsession and ugliness of it

The film you see here is not a trailer but a teaser and a test film created by some of the crew of Permeation with actor Hank Logan. The space shown is is the actual raw space rented for a major portion of the film and will be essentially rebuilt.

We appreciate your help in making this film a reality. If you can help, there are some great things to be offered in return. If you can't donate to the cause, perhaps you know someone who would like to so please pass it on and that will be help enough. Many thanks in advance!

About the film (concept and premise)

Permeation is a film enveloped by the creative body, and by that, is itself a manifestation of the very idea; that the creative body is something alive, which, like us, seeks to not only exist but to thrive. Sometimes through painting, through sound, through film...

An artist creates a "body of work", Is permeated by the work itself. Becomes the body.

And with that we, the artists, consider ourselves the creators, naturally.

But consider the creative body; a living thing in itself, seeking to create...a body...of work.

And the artist; an outlet for something which needs an outlet to thrive.

Permeation proposes that an artist is not necessarily only himself. That an artist in solitude can create a "body of work" but not without he, himself, becoming an expression of the "creative body", thereby becoming a part of a "body of work" in his own right and at his own origin. The artist becomes the paint brush of a living organism we call the "creative body".

_______

That said, either at it's root or superficially, the film is a love story about an artist living in solitude who falls in love with a woman who becomes obsessed with the body of work he creates. In the end, she becomes absorbed by the creative body and literally becomes the artist's work. A love story which is inherently dark.

This is a feature length film with a professional cast and crew, co-written, directed and scored by artist Arius Blaze with a story based on an unpublished novel written by Arius.

_______

Who is Arius Blaze?

Arius is a 34 year old artist known mostly for his work over the past 13 years in the instrumental sound arts (under the current name folktek; see folktek.com). Though he's also an inventor, painter, writer and composer who's now venturing deeper into film making.

His art has a certain aesthetic that is evident in his instruments but also extends into the rest of his work. That being something naturally old and dark, verging on colorless, somewhat experimental and yet often rather strange and beautiful..."

Mutable Instruments Anushri Analog Synthesizer with Custom Case

via the seller: "This auction is for a Mutable Instruments Anushri analog synthesizer in a custom plexiglass case. In addition to the synthesizer it's got a great SH-101 style sequencer and a super fun digital drum machine built in along with a 1/8" patch matrix for interfacing with modular synthesizers and other analog gear. You can find out more on the manufacturer's page here:

http://mutable-instruments.net/anushri

The only thing I didn't like about the Anushri was the case. The bottom 2 rows of knobs perform multiple functions and I found it hard to remember what was what with the original case which just numbered the knobs. So I had a new case laser cut following the design of the original but with text for all of the parameters and a cheat sheet on the back with the settings and midi cc#'s I always found myself digging out the manual for. The cheat sheet is printed upside down so you can peek at it without having to un-cable anything or stand on your head. For me the new case was a big improvement and made the Anushri loads more fun..."

"This is the WMD Synchrodyne Expand, they went a little crazy with it. But we figured that if you can grasp the original, you're the type that always wants to go deeper. So lets take this plunge together as we attempt to explain what it all means.

Concept

The Synchrodyne by itself is capable of a great deal, containing several modules in one, prepatched internally to create a vibrant range of sounds. It is designed to be powerful and extremely dynamic when minimally patched, but when patch cords start flying around to be open and experimental. You may also use many of the parts of the Synchrodyne and Expand separately in various parts of your patches. The open architecture allows it to do many jobs, even small ones.

Perfect Circuit Audio (RSS)

"This hybrid VCO has all the feel of an analog VCO but with the benefits of digital waveshaping.

The PDO2 is a re-release of the WMD Phase Displacement Oscillator as a 16 HP 9 knob variant with more finger space, better Phase Input routing and reduced power consumption. This new version can also be used to upgrade existing PDOs to larger panels.

The PDO2 exists to utilize the phenomenon of Phase Modulation (PM). This allows for the relative phase difference of its outputs to be set or modulated, producing very interesting sounds. The result is similar to Frequency Modulation (FM) but affects the output to a greater degree without affecting the stability of the initial frequency.

PM has the same benefits of quadrature filters/sine wave generators and greatly exceeds their capabilities at audio rate modulations. PM is highly useful for for creating metallic and bell tones and very controlled harmonic interactions.

nonlinearcircuits Neuron - Difference rectifier (papernoise panel)

"A DIY module combining a dual analog neuron and a dual differential rectifier circuit

The Difference Rectifier has 4 inputs (two + & two -) and two outputs. The Neuron has two inputs and one output. There is a pad labelled 'ext' where extra inputs can be added if desired (use a 100k resistor attached to the jack).

All inputs for both circuits can be wired to attenuating pots if required. The two pots on the PCB are the critical Offset and Invert controls for the Neuron. The Offset is slightly modded from the previous Double Neuron PCB as it now ranges between +V and -V and its effect is halved by the 200k resistor to give greater useful range.
