"Linix is the successor to the now discontinued HexVCA module. It comprises six high quality 2164 based linear VCA circuits with CV attenuation and BIAS control for each channel.
The first five channels normal to a summing amp that feeds the input of sixth channel. This allows you to have voltage control of the master sum.Patching into an individual output channel breaks that channel from the master sum. If the direct output is used for each channel then the sixth channel becomes an additional independent VCA as well (Hex VCA). Each channel has an led to monitor incoming CV activity.

The SUM output has an additional set of leds to monitor the bipolar state of the final sum and a clip led to monitor the absolute max signal level.

There is a 12pin header on the back to connect the Linix channel direct outputs to the inputs of an Intellijel Mutamix or Mutagen module."

"The DMF-2 is a dual mode and dual slope filter and emulates the familiar low pass filter in 4 pole mode and expands sonic potential by adding a unique designed 6 pole low pass mode and quasi and pass mode.
Both filters (A and B) are identical and can be controlled separately and by master inputs for the cutoff (CM A+B). The audio outputs from both filters are combined (LPF A+B and BPF A+B) with dual resonance (peak and offers "formant" shaped sounds in low pass and band pass mode. Filters has an individual audio inputs and additionally combined input (AUDIO A+B).

The DMF-2 is characterized by a non-linear transfer function, so-called saturation mode, that is affected by the level strength of the incoming signals. The design quality of LPF's and new features makes the DMF-2 very flexible and results in qualities, such as:
*CUTOFF, Q-PEAK are voltage controlled
*4 and 6 poles low pass mode (24 dB/octave and 36 dB/octave)
*Qasi band pass mode (6dB/octave high pass on the low side and 24dB/octave

low pass on the high side)
*Saturable; from "warm" and "smooth" sound (at low to moderate level of

incoming signal) to heavy distorted "nasty" and "aggressive" (at high level of

incoming signals)
*Ideal as "effect filter"
*Formant mode (dual peak) with summed inputs and outputs
*Stereo effects
*Low noise"

Audio Damage Dub Jr. demo

Published on Sep 21, 2013 stretta·78 videos

"A real time demo attempting to show some of the range of the Dub Jr.

This patch looks more complicated than it actually is. Most of the patch is dormant. You're hearing the direct output of the Dub Jr.The source Ostinato is simply an oscillator modulated by a filter. The Dub Jr. is modulated by two identical sources consisting of an LFO into a S&H, which is triggered by a Trigger Riot.

I originally shot this directly framing the Dub Jr, but the video was nonsensical when I was directing my focus on the modulation sources."

MMTA FALL SYNTHFEST Coming to Seattle on October 26!

Update: It was an awesome event as always! You'll find pics and videos of the event as they go up on the MMTA SYNTHFEST 2013 channel.  Some are already up and mine are yet to follow.  New posts of course will go up on the front page.  You can get to the channel via the link at the bottom of each post.  Note there was an earlier event this year so this post will mark the bottom of the last event.  Posts beneath that are from the prior event.

Heads up everyone! The MMTA SYNTHFEST is currently scheduled at Shoreline Community College in the Music Building (800) Saturday, October 26.  The event is Free!  Full details will follow in future posts. Until then mark your calendar and make arrangements as needed. This is not an event you will want to miss!

This year's previous Spring SYNTHFEST included the Synth Petting Zoo for people to check out and play with gear, a Tradeshow Room with local vendors & manufactures, a Presentation Room with lectures & performances, and a Jam Session room.  Last year we had a rare look into the history of Yamaha from Dave Bristow.  Mark Vail, author of Vintage Synthesizers, along with John Bowen and the Solaris, were also in attendance. For a full list of manufactures from that event, see this post.

This Tuesday in Seattle: An Engineer's Perspective on Analog Modular Synthesis

For those of you in the Pacific Northwest, Daniel Casado will be giving a presentation on modular synths. It will be held at Shoreline Community College (map) in room 818 of the Music Building. The talk is open to the public.

September Meeting Notice
The Circuit Is The Sound
An Engineer's Perspective on Analog Modular Synthesis

With
Daniel Casado
Tuesday, September 24th, 7:30pm
Shoreline Community College, Music Building, Room 818
Directions to Shoreline Community College

Modular synthesizers offer endless sonic potential, but they require a deeper level of understanding than most instruments. The intuition of the musician must be complemented by the insight of an engineer.

In this presentation Daniel will briefly review basic electronics (so we're on the same page) and then apply those concepts to the operating parameters of a synth module and how it interconnects to others in the system. He will also discuss important points to be aware of when mixing modules from different manufacturers. Joins us for an evening of sources & signals, modules & modulators, controllers, sequencers, and patch cords, lots and lots of patch cords.

About the Presenter

Daniel Casado was a PNW AES Committee member until his job got in the way. He recently retired, having just completed a stint as Director of Engineering Support for McCauley Loudspeakers and is now able to serve again. Previous to that, Daniel was the N. W. manufacturer's representative for a number of leading audio manufacturers. With over 30 years in the professional audio industry, his experience includes front of house for national acts, mixing live performances for radio & television broadcast, sound system design & installation, manufacturing, R & D, and teaching electronics & audio theory. Daniel has extensive studio experience, and is a musician as well, with a life-long interest in electronic music."

Drum Box: Boss DR-110 & Yamaha MR-10 Video Demos

Drum Box: Boss DR-110
Published on Sep 21, 2013 my4trackmachine·113 videos

"The last analog Roland drum machine, the DR-110 came about midway through the rise of the digital sample machines era. While it sported a readable screen and was easy to edit, it lacked the "authentic" sound quality of its digital brothers making it not very popular. Compared to the rest of the TR-X0Xs it has a thin whimpy kick without an accent. The snare did have some snap to it though. Today it stands as a decent alternate to its often compared 606."

Drum Box: Yamaha MR-10
Published on Sep 21, 2013

"The only analog drum machine to come from Yamaha, the MR-10 was a limited preset machine with a solid kick and tunable snares and toms. The presets are a pretty standard affair but where the MR-10 shines best is its playable plastic pads. Armed with a solid kick and fairly unique analog sound it is a largely over looked machine. Even though it is limited it is still quite playable. If you want to step away from the popular and familiar analog sounds of Roland then give a listen to this underrated machine."

Drum Box: Roland TR-606
Published on Sep 21, 2013

"Before the 808 and 909 there was the 606. A capable analog little drum machine with a great sound. Though now over shadowed by other machines with more editing and routing options, the TR-606 holds its own because of its strong sound design and easy programability."

New MFOS 12 Channel Vocoder

via Ray Wilson on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge:

"If you've been wanting to build a vocoder MFOS has developed one and has PC boards (and soon parts kits) for sale. There are plenty of sound samples to check out."

Check it out on the Music From Outer Space website here.

The intro for the archives:

"Features

Built in White/Pink Noise Source
Built in Square/Pulse Oscillator
Mic/Line Inputs for Control and Audio
Good Dynamic Response To Voice Control
Reasonably Intelligible Speech Processing
Introduction

A vocoder has got to be one of the coolest signal processors going. It allows you to impress vocal harmonic and dynamic characteristics onto other sound sources making them sound as if they are talking. This vocoder design works by using one lo-pass filter (100 Hz.), ten successively tuned band-pass filters (154, 208, 285, 395, 542, 720, 1013, 1495, 2000, 2546 Hz.) and one hi-pass filter (3330 Hz.) to separate the incoming control signal into its harmonic constituents. For each band the control signal appearing at the output of its corresponding filter is full wave rectified and low pass filtered to obtain the control signal's envelope voltage. This signal is used to drive a VCA through which the channel's filtered audio is amplitude controlled. The whole circuit is described below but all I can say is that this thing is totally cool and I'm very happy with mine (I am somewhat biased)."

1995 Rise of the Robots - 3DO Intro and Gameplay

Published on Jun 5, 2012 smcgarr·155 videos

Check out :23 - :29 in the intro above.

via wikipedia: "Rise of the Robots is a 1994 fighting game developed by Mirage Studios and published by Time Warner Interactive. It was ported to numerous home console and computer formats, and was also released as an arcade game cabinet."

What's up with a rendered TB-303 being featured in it?

This on in via cheater:

"This is a rare version of the relatively obscure 1994 fighting game Rise of the Robots on the obscure console 3DO. The game's only redeeming quality was the cool electronic music.

The shocker is that one credited musician is Brian May (of Queen fame). But he only did the guitar riff sample used in the main menu. The techno music was credited to "Fuzzy+Logic / Clown Factory"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMg-7r0Xo5M
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvyXPmN5Os4

The original is called "The Dark":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmQpEnOUdrE

Anyways the 3DO version shows a TB-303 and guitar (the latter probably refers to Brian May, no idea if the former should too?). Then we get some nice 303/808 tracks rolling during the intros.

The 3DO version incidentally does not have any music playing during the fighting sequences. There's also a SNES version and a Genesis version, and the latter has a much cooler soundtrack (due to FM synthesis rather than tiny samples). Here are some links:

Have a lot of fun listening. The Genesis music is pretty cool. Not as epic as Brian's original track, but it holds its own."

This is the one recently posted in this video. Some details from the listing:

"Korg 800Dv or univox maxi korg ( both are same unit as this was licensed to univox for production in USA . This analog synthesiser was produced in 1975 it was the first genuine duo-phonic synthesiser produced. It has separate controls for each voice ( upper and lower). These are quite rare in Australia and I only know of only 2 others in the country both of which I have owned, ( I operate the Facebook group dedicated to this rare model of korg).

(I am Selling this rare synth as I have currently have 3 units).

The sound of these has to be heard to be believed. This is probably the only mono synth that can take it up to the minimoog for 12 rounds then deliver the knockout blow with ear shattering distorted ring modulation , and still have a voice to spare,

As used by vangelis and kitaro.. The korg 800dv is similar in construction to Korgs first synthesizer the minikorg or 700. However the 800dv has more than 2 times the amount of circuitry. And that's 1970's discreet oscillators and filters for an immense sound
