Interview with Paul T Schreiber of Synthesis Technology

"Like many other electronic musicians lately I have been obsessed with my Eurorack modular. A few modules I own really stand out. Three of my favorites are from a company called Synthesis Technology. Synth-tech as people call them is Paul T. Schreiber. If you look at his resume you will see he is an experienced audio engineer. You can hear his expertise in his modules. Enjoy a one hour Wire to the Ear interview with Paul as we discuss Chris Randall, MOTM, an $18,000 home stereo, the end of Blackberry, Tandy Radio Shack, the power of digital, patents and stealing designs, Eurorack power issues, the upcoming E370 Quad Morphing VCO/E371, E102 Digital CV Processor/Quad Temporal Shifter and what would Paul eat as his death row meal.

“So a lot of people grew up drooling in music stores. I drooled in the stereo store and I wanted to have this stereo system that cost $18,000. So I told my wife…” - Paul T Schreiber

Vaco Loco GorF + Moog Source

Published on Oct 7, 2013 aeroface·2 videos

"Here's a little demo of my new Vaco Loco 'GorF' sequencing a Moog Source. I think they match pretty good in colour! The Moog has a Kenton MIDI retrofit installed, I have routed the velocity to the VCF frequency and play around with it during the video. There are some mistakes in my performance (especially when I switch into "Play Mode" [at 2:09]), and I'm sorry for the bad camera audio as I recorded it hastily today after having had the GorF only for a couple of days. The drums come from an Alesis HR16 with the Strellis 8bit custom sample set (not shown in the vid)."

"The price is below the intended retail price. So save some $$$$$ before the final release. I have (4) of these to sell.

This is the updated module that is to replace the BLM 'White VCLFO'. I decided to include both of Tom Wiltshire's digital lfo's on one module. I feel they both compliment each other. I am giving you a nice price before the officially release of this product. This is a small run of 4 units. I kept (1) for myself and am selling the rest of them. The sale of these is to raise money and pay for a bigger run.

M3 panels screws, and 10pin to 16 pin IDC cable is included.
Some notes about Blue Lantern Modules: I like to use -12v gnd gnd gnd +12v on the actual module power connector. I don't use the rest of the doepfer pins: 5v, gate, cv. I use keyed headers. So the way I crimp the IDC cable I have the red strip facing up on the module itself. Red strip on a Blue Lantern Module product means -12v...

"It's a tiny Moog. But don't underestimate it. Sure, it's just a single-oscillator mono-synth, designed as a budget performance Moog. But it's an inexpensive alternative to the Minimoog. In fact, it is often used as just a stand-alone filter processor since it has a filter that is virtually identical to the one found in the Minimoog, and it accepts external sounds for processing through itself (all at a fraction of the price for a Mini)! It also employs a ribbon controller (which was a cool new feature) for pitch bending. Notice that there are still plenty of knobs to give you access to the shape of your sounds!..."

10 Step Analog Sequencer / Synth
Control SPEED, PITCH & FILTER with Knob / Motion / Touch Control !
Lock & Key and Momentary Stutter ON / OFF Switches w/
EXTRA LARGE 10MM AMBIENT COLOR CHANGING LEDS

DESCRIPTION: What we have here is a 10 step analog sequencer, running a square wave oscillator. Each step of the bass line can be tuned via the 10 main sequence knobs (further right you turn, higher the pitch for each note of the line). This unit is intended as a stand alone sound creation device, at has NO sync out or in... hence why it should be considered a "space line generator" ;) Oh, and for added fun.. there is an ILLUMIRINGER put on the end of the signal chain for epic tweaking! Quickly I will mention the EPIC graphics she's rocking... the main graphic is an original mash up focused around an amazing image of the cockpit of the Space Shuttle "Endeavour"... As you might have guessed.. this is where the piece gets it's name.

All of this is controlled via the 3 sections at the top of the unit... each section has the option to be either controlled via a knob, light sensor or pair of touch points (at the bottom of the unit.) First, we have the "SPEED" which will control the tempo of the sequence. Next, there is the "PITCH" controls.. and finally the "FILTER" which is tied into the effects section. The filter fx can be turned on and off via the switch to the left of the Knob / Sensor control switch on the right most control section.

The touch points are set up in pairs... from left to right... 1st Speed, 2nd Pitch, 3rd Voltage Drain, 4th Effect. They can be used in pairs OR in different configuration to get some really exciting expression out of the piece.

The light sensors on this thing are SICK! Massive range... super sensitive! So many way to jam on them... I couldn't include all of them in the video there were SO MANY... so use your imagination. I really enjoy turning ALL of them on at once and creating MASSIVE SONIC NOSE DIVES by simply slowly turning the piece towards and away from a light source.. an experience that can only be understand by trying it ;)

Unit can be turned on via a mission impossible style key start (two keys included).. or a big red momentary button. 9v Power adapter powered for maximum juice'ness (this thing is a bit of a beast) which is of course INCLUDED. This is a solid PCB design, not perf . vero board etc... meaning this sucker was BUILT TO LAST.

As of now this is the ONLY ONE IN EXISTENCE. As usual, depending on the reaction this time around.. maybe I will make a few more in the future.. but as you might have guessed... building this sucker is quite an ENDEAVOUR ;)

There is SO MUCH more I can say about this piece... but you should really just check out the DEMO VIDEO and throw down a bid before someone else snakes it! (joking, but for real.. BID NOW!) haha

ios7 allows midi interfaces over USB on an iPhone?

Published on Oct 4, 2013 Gaz Williams·15 videos

"A little trumpeted feature of ios7 on the iPhone is the ability to use a camera connection kit which facilitates audio and midi interfaces to be connected over USB. Fantastic news for micro studios on the go!"

Piston Honda Mk. ][ - 3-dimensional interpolation

"Raw oscillator output. CV sources: Chaos Brother, wogglebug, A-118, human hands. The last sound playing is human EKG data in an 8-bit wavetable."

Also a note on updating the firmware via Scott Jaeger on Facebook: "When updating the firmware on the Piston Honda mk. II, the 3-digit display will usually show a set of randomly illuminated segments as the operation proceeds. This is due to some processor pins being shared between the programming port and the home-grown display driver circuit I used. However, at the end of a successful firmware upload, the same thing always happens: the display briefly shows the number "666" before going black. I had absolutely nothing to do with this, it's just the way the hardware behaves.

The third digit is driven from a completely different data line that isn't anywhere near the programmer pins."

October 7, 2013 - Use Kronos with two controllers at the same time you can. Each connected with a USB port and set the midi channel you want to control (may also be the same). Through the two controllers, you can check the pads without distinction of global channel you are playing or the pads (or effects) of other sounds in other channels while with the other controller piloted another set of sounds. In short, solutions for live use are several.
All patches of the video are original, largely used in the disc.
As soon will be available in. PCG for Kronos and Oasys
