Discovering the Terpstra Keyboard prototype

Some of you might recognize the Terpstra from this previous post way back in 2006.

via Indiegogo: "Only two prototypes of this keyboard were ever made and we're raising money to bring the project back to life - improved and packed with amazing new features."

"Get a Terpstra Keyboard now at http://igg.me/at/terpstra/x/1633808 - limited edition, unique chance to own one!

Part 1/2 is about the keyboard layout and shows why the Terpstra is 12 times easier to learn and play than the classical keyboard, by taking a look at the definition of a generalized or isomorphic keyboard: an instrument having the keys arranged in a symmetrical manner, so that notes occupying the same relative position always make the same interval with each other.

A generalized keyboard makes it possible for any passage, chord, or combination of any kind, to have exactly the same form under the fingers, in whatever key it is played - not only for the standard tuning of 12 notes per octave, but also for any traditional tuning system (indian, arabic, chinese, etc) and any other microtonal layout.

The Terpstra Keyboard was an American Festival of Microtonal Music production made with support from Maldeb Foundation. Only 2 prototypes were ever made. It is available for a limited period, in a limited amount and at a fraction of the market price at:

A few Roland D-10 sound demos

Published on Oct 24, 2013 SynthMania·278 videos

"I've always liked this synth since it came out in the late '80s. A friend of mine had one, and I especially loved its "Voxy Women Sing" patch. I bought a D-50 soon after because of my friend's D-10. It might not sound as impressive today, but I can assure you that back then, all these sounds were beautiful and state-of-the-art.

I ask viewers to please refrain from posting comments such as "The Roland D-50 is much better", "The D-10 sucks compared to the D-50", "the D-50 blows this out of the water" etc. because such comments are a bit obnoxious and of the Captain Obvious variety - anyone who knows the least bit about synths knows that yes, the D-50 sounds better than its smaller cousins. Please don't make a fool of yourself by posting such comments - although there always seems to be someone who does (typically the same kind of people who don't read the description). This is a video on the D-10, please stay on topic and make comments on the D-10, which is a cool synth by its own merit. I will make a D-50 video soon enough."

Arturia Officially Announces MicroBrute - Press Release

"Arturia makes massive analogue splash with miniature MicroBrute

'I really love the sound of the original MiniBrute, and the MicroBrute’s got that character and can be even wilder. You can get all kinds of crazy and musical interactions going on with other analogue gear and drum machines. Combine the two together and you’re rocking!'

- Adrian Utley, 2013 (Portishead)

GRENOBLE, FRANCE: music software and hardware company Arturia is proud to announce availability of the MicroBrute Analog Synthesizer — an amazingly compact and bijou, semi-modular analogue monosynth with inbuilt step sequencer, boasting MIDI, USB, and CV connectivity, together with a whole host of unique features — as of October 25...

Arturia’s award-winning MiniBrute Analog Synthesizer rapidly reset the price/performance ratio benchmark when soaring through the subtractive synthesis sound barrier last year to much critical acclaim and subsequent success. Today it is joined by its equally as big- sounding little brother, the MicroBrute Analog Synthesizer. Putting all the basic building blocks of an analogue synth classic into an even more compact and bijou package that’s pure hand-ons fun at an affordable price, the MicroBrute is guaranteed to bring big smiles to go with those big sounds!

But the MicroBrute Analog Synthesizer is actually anything but basic. For starters, just like its big brother, the OSCILLATOR that beats at its musical heart features SAW, TRIANGLE, and SQUARE waveforms that are all mixable to help shape the resulting sound without the limitations imposed by comparable contemporary and vintage synths alike. Additionally, the new Overtone oscillator generates additional harmonic content, ranging from one octave down to a fifth above the base OSCILLATOR pitch, while the Sub > Fifth control can continuously sweep spectrum. Moreover, Metalizer adds complex harmonics to the TRIANGLE waveform for creating harsh, harmonically-rich sounds, while Ultrasaw adds a lively and bright ensemble effect to the SAWTOOTH waveform — perfect for crafting sounds suited to dance anthems. And let’s not forget the all-important Pulse Width control for creating nasal-thin tones or rich square sounds. Simply speaking, never before has such a small, single-oscillator synth sounded so big!

Of course, filtering helps shape any analogue synth’s sound — be it big or small, and here the MicroBrute does not disappoint. Indeed, its distinctive-sounding Steiner-Parker FILTER plays a big part in helping give the MicroBrute a unique sound — again, just like its big brother. This filter design dates back to the Steiner-Parker Synthacon, an analogue monosynth built by the namesake Salt Lake City-based synth manufacturer between 1975 and 1979. Its HP (high-pass), BP (bandpass), and LP (lowpass) modes make for far more filtering flexibility than that found in synths many times the price! And that’s before factoring Arturia’s acclaimed Brute FactorTM into the equation, adding anything from subtle overdrive to full-blown intermodulation havoc — choose your settings, and let the fun begin!

Speaking of modulation, the easily accessible, front-panel mounted MOD MATRIX is a Volt per Octave-standard patchable system of modulation routing with ENV (envelope) out, LFO (low frequency oscillator) out, Ultrasaw modulator in, PWM (pulse width modulation) in, Metal (Metalizer) in, Overtone/Sub modulator in, Filter cutoff in, and Pitch in — meaning more in-depth, inbuilt sound-sculpting possibilities, as well as allowing Arturia’s own MicroBrute to be easily brought into the interfacing mix, or mixing and matching with third-party modular synth systems for far-out sonic explorations! Dig as deep as you need or dare to go with the MicroBrute!

Similarly, the new eight-Pattern step SEQUENCER is an almost endless source of inspiration and rhythmic creativity — step input notes and rests to create storable sequences that can be played back and switched between on the fly at a variable Rate or synchronised to external MIDI clock. Meanwhile, MIDI, USB, and CV GATE connectivity, of course, combine to ensure that the MicroBrute is ready and willing to talk to the outside electronic musical instrument world wherever it may find itself. It’s even blessed with an external audio Input with Input Level control, so why not use it to process whatever you feel like sticking into its 1/4-inch socket — within reason, of course!

With a space-saving 25-note mini-keyboard and weighing in at only 1.75kg, the MicroBrute Analog Synthesizer is truly compact and bijou, but punches well above its weight with a rip-roaring analogue sound spanning woofer-flapping bass, screaming leads, ear-opening effects, wave-folded growls, punchy drum sounds galore, and much in-between and beyond. Pick one up from an authorised Arturia dealer today!

MicroBrute can be purchased from the Arturia online store (http://www.arturia.com/evolution/en/buy/online-shop.html) or any authorised dealer for €329.00 EUR/$349.00 USD

via Thonk:

"The designer Tom Whitwell describes his innovative approach to random sequencing as such:

'Hopefully the demo video (above) explains what it does – it’s a looping shift register sequencer, inspired by Ken Stone’s Gated Comparator and Grant Richter’s Noise Ring. It can loop for ever or be completely random, with CV control over the random vs loop-iness. You cannot program it to play specific tunes. You cannot save sequences. You can never go back to a sequence that has changed. It’s designed as a sequencer that you can steer roughly in one direction or another. + it makes a crazy wavetable wave shaper when clocked at audio rates.'"

It has no tracks or memory hence the name and is aimed at being used for live performances. Works equally well with drums, great with lpgs or any other trigger duties. The clock thru is buffered, so you could use it to multi your clocks, or just buffer any signal. Should be available in about 4-6 weeks."

via the seller: "Sooooo, after a year of happily owning a Rev5, I bought into the hype, drank the kool-aid and purchased a Rev4. Since I have both Revs in my possession at the moment, I decided to do a lil A/B comparison. I was expecting to have my doors blown off but quite honestly there is not that much difference between the two. Yes there is a difference but it is negligible. The Rev4 is a bit warmer and rounder which may or may not be what you need for your particular project. The Rev5 is a bit crisper/clearer in comparison. With that being said, both are incredible analog machines with huge, rich, fat sounds. I wish I could afford to keep them both but that is just overkill. The only reason I'm deciding to put my Rev5 up for sale is because as long as the Rev4 mystique is in place, I can ask a good price for it in the future if I ever get in a bind. But to all you Rev5 owners, love and appreciate the machine you have and keep making funky music!!

This particular unit was owned by Elumba Recording Studios at one point (sticker still on the back plate) which is a studio that has helped usher in hits by likes of Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Bobby Brown, Sheena Easton, Patti LaBelle, Smokey Robinson, Baby Face and LA Reid to name a few. -High quality laser cut red oak

Each channel has an oscillator that can produce different basic waveforms which can be shaped with its own simple envelope generator. Oscillator pitch can be swept with the SWEEP control either positively (i.e. start high and drop in pitch -) or negatively (the pitch rises through the sweep). However, each channel also has an LFO with variable speed and depth and a choice of square and sawtooth waveforms. There's also a noise generator and a sample/hold function and so, with some adventurous programming, a very wide range of sounds is possible. it also come with the original case!"

Hordijk Modular studio jam

Published on Oct 24, 2013 casperelectronics synthesizers·80 videos

"A little demo of my new live performance rig. Not a great quality recording but good enough to give an idea of what I'm working with.
In the back is a Hordijk brand modular synth. In the front is my analog sound and light synth. Also based on Rob Hordijks Benjolin circuit with lots and lots of tweaks.
Next to that is an Electro Harmonix Memory Man with a few tweaks + external clock tap tempo control.

The Modular has 4 modules (from left to right)
-Triple VC-LFO with added fine tune on the full range sine wave VCO.
-Rungler Module. Dual VCO with shift register based feedback sequence/noise generator. + added fine tune knobs for both VCOs
-Dual mixer/cross-fader/pre-amp. This is my own design. nothing special. just a few opamps.
-24db multi mode VCF.

The Sound/Light synth is made up of:
- 2 Benjolin circuits (each made of 2 VCOs, 1 VCF and 1 chaos sequencer)
-Fine control of all oscillators including tuning for SETS of oscillators.
- 4 channel audio mixer
- 2 pre-amps
- Extra attenuable CV control and clock inputs for everything.
- 4 banana to 1/4" converters
- Transistor based high power LED controller. Allows me to convert signals from within the synth into an intense tri color light display."

Instruments & Effects Coming to Genome MIDI Sequencer for iOS

via White Noise Audio

"Built in Audio Modules – These are instruments and effects built into Genome that you can use to make full songs within Genome. This requires a little more detail:

New track-based audio ‘Racks’ where you can add synthesizers, samplers and effects and hook them up however you like.
Instrument modules include analog synths, drum machines and samplers. The drum machine includes some of the core parts of bleep!BOX.
Effects include distortion, chorus, phaser etc.
The sampler module uses the open SFZ sample format. It does not support 100% of the opcodes that SFZ includes, but the hope is that it can be expanded over time. I am also open sourcing the SFZ player module in the hopes that other developers can contribute code and to help promote the SFZ format. The code for this is located on Github.
You can save presets for each instrument and effect
Knob motions can be automated and recorded into your patterns using CC messages.
Genome’s internal instruments can be played using external MIDI input (ex. a keyboard or other apps)
Audio output can be recorded to .WAV

I know some people will be unhappy about Genome’s expansion from being purely a MIDI sequencer to becoming a DAW. Rest assured that nothing is changing with the existing MIDI workflow and I will continue to add new features to the MIDI editor over time."

Additional updates are planned as well.  You can find the full list at White Noise Audio here.

Pittsburgh Modular Phase Shifter

"The Pittsburgh Modular Phase Shifter is a complex, 16 stage, analog effect module designed to expand on the classic swirls, rich swooshes, and doppler effects associated with the phaser.

The Phase Shifter module uses 16 stages to create a very rich, full sound. The module splits the 16 stages into 2 separate chains of 8 for greater flexibility and to allow for extremely deep modulation options. Resonance can be positive or negative and the module will self oscillate at extreme settings."
