Buchla 100 - The Complex Envelope

Published on Nov 7, 2013 DJjondent·210 videos

"Buchla 100 - Complex Envelope.

If you're wearing headphones keep the volume down as some of the frequencies are high.
Lots of preliminarily test sounds.

The term "complex envelope I believe was first coined by Morton Subotnick.

The basic patch uses just one oscillator (a 158) and four 180 attack generators.
I've added a 144 vco to this patch but the 158 still provides 90% of the sound.

A single tone (saw wave) from the 158 is fed into a 295 comb filter.
It's necessary to use a tone with lots of harmonics to give the filter
lots to work with.

I've added a 205 matrix mixer and a 281/292 combo for fun."

"This is a 1984 Italian Crumar Bit One analog synthesizer with digital oscillators. The unit works perfectly and has had pulse width modulation custom added for the analog string sounds. VCF sawtooth modulation has also been added for some amazing sounds similar to gongs, ring modulation, and other sounds hard to describe. A manual knob also controls VCF freq for manual control of sweeps. You can definitely get peoples attention with the added modulation section- 4 knobs on the lower left. The knobs are a little off center, they don't fit the control shafts perfectly, but they were all I had and work fine regardless. The VCF in this synth is the CEM3328 making this a later version of the Bit One..."

"Welcome to Anthony's iPad Recording Studio where everything here is produced only on the iPad 4.
This great little app is one of the best sample/drum player real-time/step sequencer I have
used in iOS and I think I own them all. 24/16 bit player/sequencer that really gets you in control of your drum and sample tracks in a hurry. With a ton of depth for such a streamline app. I still found it hard to keep within the time limit and mention all the apps features. I think I covered most of them here. This app has really helped me out so I hope this review helps them and you.
My ratings ****/*****cheers."

Amazing Recording Method into Auria using the New iPad Air

Published on Nov 5, 2013 Anthony Alves·11 videos

"This is my 500th post on the Auria Forum. Cheers to all my friends there. Here I introduce a new method of recording multiple synths into Auria in real time using the new iPad Air. Recorded live at A.I.R. Studio in HD with HQ sound. I was simply blown away when I could finally do what I have been trying to attempt on the iPad 4 and Auria but it just wasn't worth a video as it was too unstable until now. Thanks for watching and hope this video encourages others to record and produce more tracks with ease and pro results. The iPad has finally met Auria at the home plate. Cheers"

Sun Ra & the History of the Minimoog at The Bob Moog Foundation

The Bob Moog Foundation has a post up featuring Sun Ra & the history of the first Minimoog.  Sun Ra was given a prototype Model B. The later Model D was the released production model. You can find a couple of videos of Sun Ra with the prototype Model B here and an audio interview with an image of the prototype here.

"In 1969, a year before the introduction of the Minimoog, Sun Ra became familiar with Bob Moog’s modular studio synthesizer. He was given a demonstration in New York by Gershon Kingsley.[i] Sun Ra first met Robert Moog after Downbeat journalist and Sun Ra acquaintance Tam Fiofori arranged for a visit to Moog’s factory in Trumansburg in the Fall of 1969. [ii] This was most likely October. Bob and his crew were testing prototypes of the Minimoog at that time, inviting Sun Ra to explore its sounds. A recording of this test session was made and, although not originally intended for commercial release, partly released many years later in 1992 as the 'Moog Experiment' (My Brother the Wind, Vol. 2, CD tracks 7-11, Evidence Records.) But more significantly, it was during this visit that Moog loaned Sun Ra a prototype Minimoog (Model B), several months before the commercial instrument (Model D) was introduced in March 1970...

What is perhaps most interesting about this encounter is that the Minimoog was still an untested idea—at least in the mind of Bob Moog. The development of a portable synthesizer was a risk for his small company. But Sun Ra’s enthusiasm was one of the first indications that a veteran live performer found promise in the new instrument."

Gravitation in time (robotic instrument excerpt) - GayBird

"Gravitation in Time (2013)
Composition for Orchestra, Robotic Instruments, Leap motion and Electronics

Composed by GayBird

Gravity Glock (robotic instrument) concept and design: GayBird, Thomas Ip
Engineering and programming: Thomas Ip

Gravity, as an ultimate natural force on Earth, people living there may easily neglect its presence, and not to mention to its influence in our seemingly ordinary everyday experience.

We are used to take such magical force for granted, however, the potential energy that it can generate is indeed powerful. My work - Gravitation in Time, is intended to draw our attention to such force again.

To perform this piece, I have custom-made two pieces of robotic instruments - Gravity Glock. They are activated by the gravitational force, and incorporate with mechanical engineering and electronic sound processing, to provide a breath-taking audio-visual experience to audience.

Musically, the constantly progressing serpentine melodies symbolised the state of unawareness presence of gravity. The piece is structured from scattered to polyphonic texture, and developed into an integrity ensemble of repetitive melodies, that demonstrated the weight of gravity in an abstract sense.

Dotcom studio-22 modular synthesizer with MAQ 16/3

Published on Nov 7, 2013 Phil Tipping·56 videos

"Promising rhythm just fell out of nowhere during testing of patch bay between Doepfer MAQ and dotcom modular synth. MAQ pitches just lashed up quickly by ear so not very adventurous and probably full of discords, but some unexpected syncopation appeared when EG decay/release increased - not sure where from yet, but that's all part of the magic :)
Each MAQ row sends pitch CV to each of the 3 VCOs which are mixed to a single VCA. Gate from row 1 controls VCA via EG. i30 pitch overrides all 3 VCOs."

Yamaha Releases TNR-e for iOS

iTunes: TNR-e - US - Yamaha Corporation of America. The original TNR-i is still available.

"The TENORI-ON enables people to create music intuitively and without any specialized knowledge about music using a 16 x 16 matrix button pad, and now there is the new TNR-e app that has new tones that capture the essence of dub step, progressive house/EDM, electro and other types of music not previously available.

Now you can access DubstKit and other new drum-pad tones, get fat bass tones like BriteBas and Helium, and dazzling tones of DubBAXX, Voxdance, VoodooWh, which were not previously available on the TENORI-ON, which makes this app a perfect place to start with your next multi-track project.

Using the iOS7 Inter-App Audio feature, you can control the sound sources of other compatible apps from the TNR-e, which gives you a wider range of sounds to choose from.

And only the TNR-e comes with several new attractive features and 2 master effect systems. Use the XY pad interface to apply the FILTER and six other types of effects to make your music come alive!

Use ISOLATOR and FILTER to create breaks, then, use the LOOPER to create a long trigger effect and a strong hook. EDM can be used to easily develop the song as well. Get the most out of live performances through improvisation.

SoundCloud is a hassle-free way to share data.

[About the input interface]
You can create music intuitively by ""placing"" sounds on the 16 x 16 button grid that are performed musically and visually.
On the 16 x 16 grid, time is represented horizontally, while the pitch is represented vertically.
Both rythm and melody are combined on the grid to create music.
When the sound is played, the buttons flash which also provides a stimulating visual performance.

Up to 16 tones can be played simultaneously (16 layers), and it can store up to 16 song patterns in memory (16 blocks), which can be activated during a performance in real time to produce a rich variety of musical expressions.

There are six different performance modes for each layer:
- Basic score mode: time is on the horizontal axis and pitch is on the vertical axis
- Random mode: Sounds are played in the order that they were entered, and rotating the device produces a cascade of changing melodies and rythms for your enjoyment
- Draw mode: Sounds are played in response to dragging your finger on the grid, like drawing a picture
- Bounce mode: Sounds are produced when the lights fall, just like a bouncing ball
- Push mode: Continuously change the tones as you perform
- Solo mode: Easily change the speed and pitch to play as a soloist

You can use these two tools together to create great music.

[Features]
- Newly designed tones suitable to dance music
- 253 different tone types perfect for electronic music
- 2 master effect systems (seven types: FILTER, DICIMATOR, DELAY, FLANGER, NOISE, LOOPER, ISOLATOR, LOOPER)
- New interface that even beginners can understand easily
- Inter-App Audio compatible
- AudioBus compatible
- Guide feature that explains button operations
- Multi-session feature for multiple players
- Audio recording
- User Voice function
- Yamaha Server for file sharing
- SoundCloud upload feature

In this example, the Polymath is connected via MIDI to a DAW running Logic. A string of MIDI notes in Logic dictate the clock speed (and sequencer speed) on the Polymath (using MIDI NOTE #00). This is a very flexible way to have the Polymath sequencer follow your projects and the tempo set in your DAW. See the manual for more information.

You can hear the filter being opened and closed via the sequencer sliders on the Polymath. Small adjustments of various parameters on the Polymath front panel were made to alter the live sequence.

Still only seeing imports from Japan.

According to the following via KORG, it was released in Japan in May of 2013 and was to be released globally in the Summer of 2013.

"DETUNE Ltd. (Located at Shinjuku-ku Tokyo, Japan/ C.E.O – Nobuyoshi Sano) and KORG Inc. (Located at Inagi-City, Tokyo, Japan/ President - Seiki Kato) are pleased to announce the release of the jointly developed musical instrument software for Nintendo 3DS Downloads: "KORG M01D".

The KORG M01D is a music workstation based on the KORG M1 the world’s first widely known music workstation. The M1 was released in 1988 by KORG Inc., one of the most famous and leading electronic musical instrument companies. The KORG M01D reproduces the M1’s unforgettable digital sounds of the 80s such as the “M1 piano”, still heard on many songs today.

With 24 voice-polyphony, over 300 sounds and an easy to operate sequencer, the KORG M01D helps you play and create your music at any place, and at any time, in a palm-size package!

Furthermore, the KORG M01D maximizes the range of music making possibilities with the excellent functionality of the Nintendo 3DS dual screens and performs sensuous note input with the sound control mode of the touch screen. This brings the “fun” experience beyond the music workstation, for everyone from beginners to professionals.

The song data and MIDI data can be saved to an SD card so the KORG M01D can be used as a sketchpad. You can preserve all of your musical ideas which can be later converted to your DAW system for more serious music production. In addition, anyone can exchange song data using Nintendo 3DS Wi-Fi via the Internet.

Sold in Japan since August 2010 as a package, the KORG M01D has been highly acclaimed by creators and performers who love gadget musical instruments. Now with this download version, the KORG M01D is available worldwide.

The KORG M01D will be unveiled at the worlds’ biggest music instrument expo, “Musikmesse” in Frankfurt Germany, this month.

A recently acquired Roland drum pad synth is used as a midi controller in this instance via a Doepfer 190-B Midi to CV converter, utilizing gate out to trigger a Plan B Model 10, 1v/octave voltage out to control three Plan B Model 15 VCOs and the aftertouch to provide a secondary amplitude VC in a Plan B Model 25 (VCA section) to provide dynamic response to the pressure applied to the pads, which is offset via a Plan B Model 14 Voltage Processor.
