Josh Holley of Melekko and Colin Newman of Wire

MATRIXSYNTH T-Shirt sighting!

BTW, I love Wire. I saw them at The Variety Arts Theater in LA back in June of 1987. It was the most intense show I've been to and this was the same period I went to see Skinny Puppy, Rev Cocks, Ministry, NIN and others. Wire had a crazy vibe going on that night. I remember feeling on edge. That feeling where you have to look over your shoulder to make sure there isn't some psycho there. I remember thinking it was just me. I looked over to my friend and he had that same look in his eyes. I asked him if he felt it and he said yes. It borderline creeped us out. We both tripped out as we didn't expect it. It was an incredibly powerful show. One of the stand outs for me and I've been to a lot of shows.

In case you missed it, Wire had a new album out titled CHANGE BECOMES US and they are on tour.

4ms Quad Clock Distributor (QCD): Video Manual part 1: Overview

Published on Nov 21, 2013 4mspedals·78 videos

"The Quad Clock Distributor (QCD) from 4ms Company is a four channel master clock module with Tap Tempo. Each channel has a clock divider/multiplier (from /32 to x16) and an independent clock input and output. The Div/Mult amount can be CV controlled with an external source (sequencer, manual pads, LFO, etc). Each channel also has a Reset jack for clock phase shifting (on-the-beat vs. off-the-beat vs. in-between-the-beat, etc...). The channels normally sync to the Tap Tempo button, but plugging in an external clock overrides this.

Complex rhythms can result quickly.

The QCD connects to the QPLFO (Quad Pingable LFO) from 4ms

Paul Hartnoll of Orbital Remixes Dr. Who Sea Devils Score

This one is in via Suit & Tie Guy.

"To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who (this Saturday), Paul Hartnoll did a remix of a cue from The Sea Devils score. The Sea Devils was a Doctor Who story which used the Synthi 100 exclusively and is one of the most captivating synthesiser soundtracks i've ever heard. I first heard that excerpt from The Sea Devils on a DW 20th anniversary picture disc that i bought soon after becoming a DW fan in 1991 as a freshman in high school. it's haunted me ever since. (coincidentally i didn't even finally _see_ The Sea Devils until 2004. and yes the Sea Devils Filter is essentially an EMS filter.)"

Pictured above is Malcolm Clarke with the Synthi 100 via the RADIOPHONIC GALLERY on whitefiles.org. "Caption: It's 1974 and a bearded and long-haired Malcolm Clarke intently studies the settings of the EMS 'Delaware' synthesiser, located at this time in Room 10. The small supplementary mixer at the bottom was constructed by Richard-Yeoman Clark. The box on top of the Delaware contains a standard BBC Peak Programme Meter (PPM)."

And the remix followed by a remastered version of the original piece and the first two parts of the episode. The third part appears to be blocked by the BBC.

"To celebrate 50 years of doctor who here's a remix I (Paul Hartnoll) did for a doctor who album of mixes that sadly wasn't released.

It's been gathering dust on a hard drive for years so what better time to get it out, I'm sure nobody will mind!

It's a version of Doctor Who and the Sea Devils written by Malcolm Clark and staring my first doctor John Pertwee."

S.W.A.N.  stands for Syntar Without a Neck.  As most of you know, the Syntar was the first  synthesizer keytar and was developed by George Mattson, the man currently behind Mattson Mini Modular.  It is an all analog monophonic synth that dates back to 1981. You'll find some additional details on the S.W.A.N. previously posted here.

Only one SWAN was ever produced and you are looking at it. And no, I am not the lucky owner.

Palette - Freeform Snappable Hardware Controller Interface on Kickstarter

Palette: Hands-on Interaction
Published on Nov 21, 2013 Palette Gear·1 video

"BACK US ON KICKSTARTER: http://kck.st/17O9WOP

This is Palette. Palette is a freeform hardware interface.

It offers hands-on control of your favorite software. Connect sliders, dials and buttons to create a controller that is made to fit you.

Unlike a point and click interface or a glass touchscreen, these physical inputs give you precision and control that you can feel with your fingertips.

Simply interact with Palette to adjust any feature within your software ranging from basic games to professional creative suites.

Existing interfaces, assume that you work exactly the same as everyone else, but you design Palette to fit your unique workflow.

Setting up is as easy as plugging Palette into your laptop. It recognizes the software you're running and becomes a controller that will grow with your needs (--which means) matching your unique style no matter what gear you're using.

Building Palette begins with the power module. Connect as many sliders, dials and buttons as you like and easily assign functions to them using the Palette Desktop App. You can load preset profiles or set them individually.

This integration of hardware and software makes the platform easy for anyone to use.

Palette connects you to your best work, in a way thats personal, and hands-on."

"Working with Wolfgang Palm on the new PC/Mac Version of the Highly Acclaimed PPG WaveGenerator"

Additional details via Nutekk Labs.

"For many years, after working with both Mac and Windows, my platform of choice is almost always Windows. I like the freedom of Windows, I overclock and run my operating system stripped down, lean and mean. It is this type of tinkering that led Waldorf to notice my abilities when I managed to make a "work-around" for their AFB-16 by substituting an older usb subsystem in the current day Windows. Ultimately Waldorf gave me the opportunity to beta test and eventually sound design for some pretty amazing synths, including the PPG V3, where I had the honor to first meet and work with Wolfgang Palm.

After working with Wolfgang on several projects for the ipad I was very excited to hear from him when he asked if I would be interested in doing some sound design for the PPG WaveGenerator for his new Windows and Mac version. Wow, I never expected to be able to use the WaveGenerator in my much preferred Windows environment. Without hesitation the work began, creating a very special and inspired 23 program bank that will be included in the factory release. While the ios version of the WaveGenerator is incredible ... it is even better to be able to use it in Windows. Hope you enjoy it too!"

MFB-522 Drumcomputer Drum Machine TR-808 Sounding "Clone" With MIDI

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

SN 09271 via this auction

"From MFB...Drumcomputer MFB-522

* 9 analogue instruments
* step-sequencer with 16 steps
* 25 controls for attack, decay, tone etc.
* Bass drum programmable in two lengths
* Tom/Conga programmable in three pitches
* memory locations for 72 patterns and 8 songs
* MSRP: 280,- Euro

MFB-522 is a drumcomputer with a fully analogue sound engine that offers plenty of editing capabilities. It includes a step-sequencer with popular TR-style running-light-programming. Memory locations are available for 72 patterns as well as for 8 songs.

Available edit controls:

Bass drum [Decay, Tune, Tone, Level]
The bass drum can be programmed in two different lengths per pattern. It also offers and individual output.
Snare drum [Noise, Tone, Level] - Rimshot [Level]
Snare drum and rimshot cannot be played simultaneously. However, they can be used in the same pattern. Both instruments share the same individual output.
Clap [Attack, Filter, Decay, Level]
The parameters allow setting the width and fullness of the clap sound. This sound also has its proprietary individual output.
Tom/Conga [Tune, Decay, Level]
This sound source can be switched between Tom and Conga instruments. Sounds programming allows setting of three different pitches.
Cowbell [Tune, Decay, Level] – Clave [Level]
Tune for Cowbell controls a detune-effect, while the pitch is set commonly with Cymbal and Hihat. Cowbell and Clave cannot be played simultaneously. However, they can be used in the same pattern.
Cymbal [Tone, Decay, Level]
Tune sets the pitch for Cymbal, Cowbell and Hihat
Open/Closed Hihat [Decay, Level]
Open and Closed Hihat cannot be played simultaneously. However, they can be used in the same pattern. This sound source offers and individual output.

The step-sequencer allows programming of 72 basic patterns plus 72 fill-ins. The latter being associated to the basic pattern memory location, resulting in a two-bar-pattern when using the fill-in. Patterns can be combined to eight songs that each hold a user-definable sequence of up to 64 patterns. In addition to the instruments, a global accent-track is available. When set, the corresponding step will be played with a higher or lower volume-setting in comparison to the standard level. The MFB-522’s sequencer offers three different steps of shuffling. A stereo output will carry all instruments minus those where individual outputs are in use (bass drum, snare drum/rimshot, claps and Hihat). Using the MIDI-In, drum-sounds can be played with a keyboard or external sequencer. Here, the sound sources act velocity sensitive. Finally, MFB-522 can be synchronized to incoming MIDI-clock.

The MFB-522’s dimensions are: 175 x 125 x 38/72 mm. The unit need a power-supply AC/DC 12V 500mA unstable."

"Synth-only 2-voice demo with simple patterns recorded & controlled in real-time by a MIDI keyboard connected via Sequetron. Voice limit (2 x VCO/VCF/EG/VCA) gives interesting variations as seqs sharing the same voice steal notes from each other as they mute & play with different cycle lengths.

Also shows effect of adding a simple soft/hard clipping switch to dotcom's Q107 filter.
Equipment used: Customised Studio-22 from Dotcom, Korg i30 MIDI keyboard, Kenton Pro Solo II MIDI-to-CV, Sequetron 13.07.

Please contact me if you have a means of generating more than 2 CVs from a PC and are interested using (or have tried) Sequetron on your modular. I only had 2 single-channel MIDI-to-CV devices so you'd either need more of these or multi-channel ones, or something like the Expert Sleepers Silent Way system... and of course a synth with sufficient modules - currently outside my budget! :-(
