Tiptop Audio Releases the TOMS909 TR-909 Toms Eurorack Module

TOMS909 1 Published on Dec 20, 2013

"Simple patch featuring the TOMS909 triggered by the Trigger Riot, and vocals from the laptop into the Z2040 gated by the Z8000 on the beat."

"Introducing the TOMS909, the warmth of the classic all-analog punchy tom-toms from the TR-909 drum machine further expanding your Tiptop modular music production system.

The TOMS909 contains all three of the TR-909’s original Low, Mid and High tom-tom circuits adapted for use in the Eurorack modular synthesizer format. The module was tested to sound like a fresh machine coming off the assembly line back in the 80’s. To add flavor to the beast we have extended each tom’s tuning range so it’s easier to dial soft bass drums on the lower ends and high pitched toms on the other. In addtion to that all three toms are voltage controlled, letting you play the tom’s pitch with CV sequencers like the Z8000, reshape the tuning with envelopes and LFOs, and create new metallic sounding percussive sounds using audio rate frequency modulation of the internal analog oscillators.

The toms circuitry is made up of 9 triangle oscillators and a stack of filters, VCAs, and envelopes which in total took about half of the space on the original 909’s circuit board. Utilizing the latest in electronic design technology we have managed to squeeze this enormous circuit, consisting of more than 450(!!) components, into a tight area only 16HP wide. It is a beautiful board with hundreds of tiny shiny components, a little analog jewel.

Each tom includes a trigger and accent input with accent level control, manual tune, voltage-control tune input with attenuator, and independent audio out. In addition, a MIX out is available that sums all three toms together. On each gate input, we have designed a dual pulse-shaper circuit so you can trigger your TOMS909 with Trigger/Gate signals from sequencers or any other pulse/clock sources."

Trash Secret - A Musical Journey Inside Technology on Kickstarter

Synth bits come in at 2:35 followed by 3:15.

From the man who brought us the PetSynth back in October of 2009, Chrion Bramberger has a new project with a campaign on Kickstarter here.  As you can see from the video above, the focus is on making art, music and instruments from discarded electronic equipment.  Click through to the Kicstarter campaign for full details.  Backers of the project will be entitled to sample sets and some of the unique gear created for the project.

The following is a sizable excerpt on the gear for the archives (not everything is captured so be sure to click through to the campaign for more including additional pics and history on each item):

"Musical Instruments - Hardware and Software

Effects Pedals for Guitars:
The Dragonfly
A distortion pedal made from a recycled modem and hard drive

A New Top-Secret Design
A unique pedal, mono synth-like, but neither truly analog or digital [some additional bits from the kickstarter page: 'I can't give it all away, but I've done something totally new. I've created a pedal that makes your guitar sound crazy! It's hard to describe, but it has an 8-bit feel to it, and is best compared to a mono-synth. However, it is neither digital nor analog. It uses chips from a DEC PDP-11 computer, but it does naughty things with them. Horribly naughty and inappropriate things that these chips were never meant to do. :-)

I took my inspiration from Woz (Steve Wozniak - co-founder of Apple) and they way he designed his blue box to generate more tones than it should because he was able to exploit properties of the chips weren't supposed to generate more sounds, but did. This is my humble attempt at a clever hack, in homage to Woz and his amazing Mozart-like ability to explore circuits in his head to do new things.

This is my newest design, and this pedal is still in the breadboard stage.

However, this pedal will benefit from all the work and experience from building the prototypes from The Dragonfly. It will have a similar size and shape, use a hard drive for a case, an acrylic faceplate, and take advantage of my unique super-secret full color plastic printing techniques.']

PetSynth and MIDI adapter for Vintage Computers

Commodore PET
Commodore VIC-20
Commodore 64
Based on the original PetSynth software I created. A monophonic synth, and hardware adapter to provide a MIDI interface, for Commodore computers. Connects through the user port on Commodore computers. Helps unlock previously unused voices on the above computers.

Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)
Based on the original PetSynth software I created. A monophonic synth, and hardware adapter to provide a MIDI interface, for the original NES. A typical cartridge provides the software. MIDI connects through the controller port on the NES. The cartridge does not have special hardware, or any wires that hang out of the front of the NES, and will be released as open-source.

BBC Micro
Based on the original PetSynth software I created. A monophonic synth, and hardware adapter to provide a MIDI interface, for Commodore computers. Connects through the a port on BBC Micro computers (user port or parallel port to-be-determined).

Apple IIGS Stereo Card
A stereo adapter for the Apple IIGS. Originally designed from a multiplexing chip found in CD-ROM’s. New design from better multiplexers found in some KVM switches will be implemented. Will connect to the internal sound expansion port in the IIGS. There is the possibility of a board that fits between the sound chip and motherboard, to provide better sound quality and balanced outputs. However, not all Apple IIGS systems have a socketed sound chip (some are soldered) and the feasibility needs to be further explored. Exact details to-be-determined, but a demo of the original design can be seen and heard in the Kickstarter video (above).

Guide to Macro Technology Photography and How to use and old CD-ROM to take Microscopic Pictures on a Mobile Phone

A guide that helps people to use their camera or mobile phone to take pictures like the ones seen in the Kickstarter video (above). This would include macro photography tips and tricks, as well as a guide to using an old CD-ROM to safely modify a mobile phone camera to act as a microscope. This process is not permanent, and the mobile phone is not taken apart or damaged. Can be done by anyone easily with this guide.

Musical Instruments - Sampler Patches

Supported Software

Logic & Garage Band
Kontact
Raw sample files for users to import into their own samplers.
Organic Acoustic & EMF Sounds

Samples of acoustic and electromagnetic sounds of computers, video games and technology, and soft synth patches created for mainstream samples. How many patches, and what will be samples, will be determined through the process of creating the album. Expect approximately 10 or more unique patches. This may be the sounds of hitting or bowing hard drive platters, heat sinks, and other parts of old computer and electronics.

Samples of Hardware and Software projects (above) as Soft Synths

Samples of various computers, electronics, and video game parts, and software synth patches

Sync ER1 and KP and Serge and Buchla

Published on Dec 20, 2013 pjoris2·123 videos

"Syncing everything to the Korg ER-1.

Again: ER1 triggers bass notes on the Kilpatrick (see previous video). Actual notes come from a sequencer on the Serge (with quantizer and ASR). Some trigger delay also using slope generators on the Serge. Actual bass-sounds are only Kilpatrick (oscillators and filter).

Midi thru on the Kilpatrick midi-to-cv convertor then goes to the K4816 on the Buchla which receives midi clock from the ER-1.

A bit messy and busy, but a nice test."

Franke Music Stroke Machine for iPad Released - Video & Details

Stroke Machine Teaser Published on Dec 20, 2013

iTunes: Stroke Machine - Wolfram Franke

Update: Some higher res pics.  Click on each for the full size shots.

"Stroke Machine is a professional Drum and Groove Synthesizer and Sequencer for the iPad developed by Wolfram Franke.

Program your own rhythm and groove patterns and switch between them in a live performance. Mute or solo individual instruments, change parameters on the fly and record your performance as high-quality audio file for sharing or later editing on your computer.

The high-contrast user interface is perfectly suited for dim light situations on stage and assists in sound creation in the studio.

Stroke Machine's powerful synthesizer engine features high-quality Oscillator, Filter, Overdrive and Effect models, extremely fast Envelopes and LFO, sample-exact Pattern Sequencer and a sophisticated Sample, Sound and Pattern library.

The deep sound creation possibilities include two oscillators with typical analog waveforms and sample playback, frequency and ring modulation and a separate white and pink noise generator with integrated multimode filter. All tone generators are summed into a transient generator, followed by another multimode filter and a drive module with several types, a sample rate and bit depth reduction stage, and a two-band equalizer with shelf and bell curves.

Freely assignable modulations with an easy-to-understand user interface offer maximum flexibility easily surpassing even expensive hardware synthesizers.

Each sound is mixed into one of four effect busses, each featuring a sum overdrive, a compressor, a modulation effect like chorus, flanger, phaser or sum filter, and a space effect like delay or clocked delay, or natural, plate or non-linear reverb.

Overview:
• 12 drum and percussion sound parts
• 12 melodic sound parts
• number of voices only limited by CPU
• 4 multi-effect busses
• pattern with up to 8 bars and 16th resolution, bar nominator and denominator freely adjustable

This is a chance to buy as good an example of this synth as you're likely to find. It has just been thoroughly-overhauled by James Walker at Synth Repair Services: several new VCF/VCA Voice chips have been installed as required and it ships with an extra pair of original Roland chips for possible future repairs.

It's in exceptional condition for a synth that's approaching its 30th birthday with only very minor blemishes to the paintwork and a few minor scuffs to the end cheeks.

HAXXED OMNICHORD SYNTHESIZER w/ Monotron Delay

+ HAXXED OMNICHORD SYNTHESIZER + for Olly (December 2013)

Published on Dec 19, 2013 HAXXOR AUDIO·38 videos

Note: HAXXOR is Dave Bradbury's aka Squidfanny's new branding. Not sure if it replaces Squidfanny. I shot Dave a message to find out. I did however create a new HAXXOR label for new posts and found one older post I added it to. See the HAXXOR channel at the bottom of this post for it.

Video description:
"This modified Omnichord OM-84 has been infiltrated and subverted using an assortment of DIY circuitry, and a Monotron Delay -

The Monotron is firmly bolted onto the Omnichord, and provides Resonant Filter & Space Echo, and there's a little mixer built into the Omnichord, so that it's individual channels can be sent through the echo & filter.

The Monotron can even be triggered from the Omnichord!

Deep hardware hacking using a sophisticated little Step-Sequencer circuit has opened up a world of weirdness, modulations and custom rhythm patterns.

The Step-Sequencer will trigger a pair of envelope generators, which can be used to MODULATE THE PITCH of the Omnichord & MODULATE THE ECHO RATE on the Monotron. Both envelope generators can also be used the Trigger the Monotron and provide Whooshy synth sounds.

The Modulated Echo sounds amazing....

There's also an array of metal touch-points, which can be used to 'Play' the insides of the Omnichord with fingers...

Other Modifications include a Patch-Bay, which can be used to re-patch the triggers from the preset rhythms (drums, chord & bass), and an extra row of patch-able bolts belonging to the Step-Sequencer; these bolts can be used to generate unique custom rhythms, or just used to add variations to the existing rhythms.

There's also some knobs for tweaking the Analog Drum sounds, and there's powered individual outputs on the back of the machine for the Omnichords separate channels (Drums, Chord/Bass & Harp).

Yep, this one's been an epic project..... Learned alot though, and it's interesting to see how the technology inside has advanced from the original OM-27 (produced 8 years earlier in 1980).
This OM-84 was the last 'Analog' Omnichord, and although the voicing circuits ARE analog, all of the really cool chips/circuits have been compressed into a large ROM/MPU, so sadly they can't be accessed externally - and that means NO GLITCH SOUNDs on this machine :(
Instead, I've gone to some considerable effort to modify the ECHO on the Monotron, to act as a 'Glitch Sound' provider. It works very well, and has an interesting 'under water' style of sounds, which I really like :)

Sorry about the dodgy audio levels in places - recorded this vid late at night with cheap headphones, while the neighborhood was soundly sleeping :]"
