I Dream of Wires on NPR

I thought this was pretty cool. NPR has a post up on I Dream of Wires. You can find it here.

"Once you cross wires with a modular synthesizer, it's like your bloodstream turns into sine waves. The documentary I Dream of Wires looks at the technological and philosophical genesis of the instrument, all the way to its demise and subsequent resurgence. Make no mistake, this movie is for the fanatics — it clocks in at four hours (!) — but with a shorter theatrical release set for Moogfest in April, maybe it'll inspire a new generation of synth wizards."

The post also features a video for "Burn the Tables" off the soundrack by Solvent, featuring the LZX Video Synthesizer.

via this auction

"MFB's Tanzbär drum-computer offers fourteen analogue percussion instruments as well as a synthesizer for bass- and melodic voices. Its integrated step-sequencer allows flashlight-programming and storage of up to 144 patterns. All parameters can be recorded per step! Because of its ability to control and call up all functions on the fly, while the unit is running, Tanzbär is ideally suited for live performances.

Using the fill-function, patterns can be chained for longer sequences. In addition, every pattern offers A/B variations that can be switched manually or automatically for further flexibility. Also, Tanzbär allows saving 16 flame and roll-variations.

The step-length is controllable per instrument, allowing easy creation of polyrhythmic structures. Possible resolutions are 32th and 16th steps as well as 16th- and 8th triplet-steps. The shuffle amount can be continuously controlled globally and per instrument.

Each instrument offers three accent intensities. Add the bend-function to create glides and LFO-like sweeps for bass drum 1/2, snare drum and toms 2/3.

In addition to the percussion-instruments, Tanzbär offers addressing external instruments using its two CV/Gate outputs; one being able to control dynamics via a third CV-output. The same tracks are routed to the internal bass- and melody-synthesizer voices. An ideal solution to pre-listen and program patterns without any need for external equipment.

The CV/Gate-sequencer offers a range of three octaves and is programmable using two methods. All parameters are output via MIDI, allowing control of external instruments. The drum-computer can be synchronized via MIDI- and clock-signals.

Finally, Tanzbär not only offers a master volume knob but individual level controls and mute-functions per instrument. The unit provides a stereo output as well as twelve individual outputs.

TANZBAER has the following dimensions: 330 x 170 x 60 mm. An external power supply is included.

analogue drum-computer with tight step-sequencer and 16 instruments
immediate control, integration of MIDI and CV/Gate
different step-lengths per instrument
programmable accent- and pitch-bend-functions
144 patterns with A/B-variations, fill-function to chain various patterns
3 CV- and 2 Gate channels

individual and global swing-quantization
recording of control-value per step
12 individual outputs, stereo output

The Good, the Bad and the microSAMPLER

Published on Feb 4, 2014 Arrayzable·15 videos

"I watched this epic movie with my wife a couple of months ago and have had the main theme stuck in my head ever since!
I used an oldschool breakbeat which low fidelity IMO matched the old sound of the movie pretty well!
This movie doesn't contain lots of dialogue, but there are quite a few punch lines suitable for sampling.

Punch line samples in chronological order (according to the movie):

"Such ungratitude after all the times I've saved your life!"
--When Blondie (Eastwood) ride away from Tuco (Eli Wallach) who he has left tied up in the desert.
"Too big for your neck, huh?"
--When Tuco at gunpoint forces Blondie to hang himself.
"If you shoot me you won't see a cent of that money!"
--When Angel Eyes (Lee Van Cleef) at gunpoint tries to force both Tuco and Blondie to dig up the treasure at the cemetery. But Blondie knows that Tuco isn't digging in the right spot and won't lift a finger!
"You see in this world there are two kinds of people; those with loaded guns, and those who dig. -You dig!
--When Blondie at gunpoint forces Tuco to dig up the treasure in the cemetery

Nice movie, huh?!

Hope you enjoy the track and watch the movie at least once!"

Ototo: Make Music from Anything on Kickstarter

You might remember the Ototo from this post back in October. It is now on Kickstarter seeking funding.  Click through for full details including additional pics and the different kit options.  You can find their official site here: http://dentakulondon.com/ototo/.

"Ototo is an all-in-one musical invention kit which allows you to make an instrument any way you want.

It’s a small synthesiser which allows you to build instruments using conductive materials and simple electronic sensors. You can make sounds straight out of the box by touching the keys to trigger notes. By connecting conductive materials or objects to the keys on Ototo you can make them react to touch; turning anything you can imagine into an instrument.

How it works

All sounds are made up of three parts: loudness, pitch and the texture of the sound (timbre). Using Ototo you can control all three of these and create an expressive musical instrument or installation. The keys on the Ototo are arranged like one octave of a musical keyboard. When you connect an object to a key using crocodile clips, you can trigger that note on your object.

There are four sensor inputs which control the different elements of the sound, one each for pitch and loudness and two that control the texture of the sound. You can select from different styles of inbuilt synthesiser sounds using the buttons or connect up to a computer to control sounds via USB MIDI.

Ototo will work with any conductive material, so that's metal, organic materials, water and anything else that can hold an electrical current. Each material reacts slightly differently with Ototo, so it's good to try out them all!

OP-1 as a basic 4-Track in Stereo Demo

Published on Feb 4, 2014 djthomaswhite·91 videos

"In this video I get brave and play the ukelele and sing, both of which I am terrible at. However, the point is that I sat in a quiet room, used the internal microphone and layered multiple takes into the OP-1. The only other elements included include one Cluster synthesizer sound, some Nitro processed drums and Spring reverb on the main mix in the OP. The channels are panned to give a stereo field. Very basic, but useful to show how you can use the OP-1 in a style completely different from my other previous tutorials and examples."

OP-1 "In Stereo" 3 minute Demo Song

Published on Feb 4, 2014 djthomaswhite·91 videos

"I wanted to show that the OP-1 is not strictly mono when it comes to audio. True, each tape track is mono, but each tape track can also be planned in the main mix out. This example uses four internal synthesizer engines to varying degree and each on is on a separate track and panned in the mix. It's a short tune, with no beats, and not very exciting, but soon I will make longer ones with more depth."

Novation Celebrates Its History with Free 800MB Sample Pack & Synth Contest

Novation // Innovation Since 1992 Uploaded on Jan 30, 2014 NovationTV·181 videos

Interesting insight with EDP Wasp creator Chris Huggertt. At 2:25 he states the original BassStation used the VCA & filter of the Wasp, "the analog synth part of the Wasp."

Details on the Contest and Sample Pack (Press Release):

"Novation Releases a Heritage Celebration Short Film, FREE 800MB Sample Pack, and All-Star Judged Competition to WIN its Powerful Synth Line

Novation is celebrating its heritage with a short film that explores Novation past, present, and future, along with a completely free sample pack comprising over 800MB of loops, single hits, multi sampled patches, and drum kits from its unforgettable and modern classic synths.

In addition, Novation are offering three people the chance to win their choice of Bass Station II, UltraNova, or MiniNova - their award winning current lineup of synthesisers - in a make-a-track competition with an all-star judging panel including Paul Hartnoll (Orbital), Liam Howe (Lana Del Rey, Sneaker Pimps), Eats Everything, and Timo Maas in a competition running from the 4th of February to the 4th of March 2014.

Novation co-founder Ian Jannoway, legendary synth designer Chris Huggett, Gus Unger-Hamilton of Alt-J, Sneaker Pimps and Lana Del Ray producer Liam Howe, and product manager Matt Derbyshire all feature in a very special short film that charts the rise of Novation from humble beginnings to a company whose musical innovations support a user base that includes - amongst many others - Orbital, M4SONIC, Rudimental, T.E.E.D, Lunice, Alt-J, Teddy Riley, and Jimmy Mac - keyboardist for international sensation Lorde.

Supernova II, K Station, Bass Station, Drum Station, Bass Station II and Ultranova are all represented in the heritage sample pack, and Novation are launching a month long competition with an all-star judging panel including Paul Hartnoll (Orbital), Liam Howe (Lana Del Ray, Sneaker Pimps), Eats Everything, and Timo Maas to create a track using the pack - with three winners each winning their choice of either Ultranova, Mininova, or Bass Station II. The competition runs from 4th of February 2014 to 4th of March 2014.

To watch the short film, download the heritage sample pack, and enter the competition, go to www.novationmusic.com/heritage.

Good luck!"
