"Patch demonstrating the Korgasmatron's cross fader being used to creat ring mod type timbres.
AFG sine wave is the carrier patched into both sides of the cross fader and Z3000 mk2 sine is used to modulate the cross fader at audio rate tracking pitch along with the carrier.
A separate Env and VCA is used for the modulation index, creating the percussive attack.
As the sequence plays I tweak the cross fader bias to reveal more of the carrier signal."

Synth Artist Interviews via I♥SYNTHS

You might remember the I♥SYNTHS interview with Richard Devine previously posted here. Jim Smith of I♥SYNTHS has been sharing new interviews on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge.  There are currently a total of nine artist interviews.  The following is a list of each with with one pic, one quote and one link to the full interview.  You'll find some great synth spotting throughout and of course you'll get some insight and perspectives on the synths and more from each artist.  You can also find I♥SYNTHS on Facebook.

009: Shawn Rudiman

"I♥SYNTHS: What was your first synthesizer?

Shawn Rudiman: My first synth was a Yamaha b200 M. That was what started me on this wild ride. It was a Prosumer FM 8 voice / 4 op poly. I got it for Christmas in 1990. I believe I was 18 and It was my first real love. That poor synth has had a lot of flight time hours on it. They keys have started to degrade and melt and the buttons are all in need of serious replacing as well. I still love it and pull it out sometimes. The next day after that Christmas, I went out and picked up an HR16b, with whatever money I had saved. I still have that as well and it’s been modified now with the patch bay-hack that scrambles the 16-bit data lines which makes the sounds totally into something new."

008: Custom Synth

"I♥SYNTHS: You’ve done some custom synths for celebrities and famous musicians. What was your most unique or original project?

Custom Synth: One of the most unique projects was for Tom Rowlands (The Chemical Brothers studio). I built a midi controller keyboard to sit in the bumper rail of a large SSL mixing desk. It has a detachable cover to match the rest of the desk and two modular cabinets. One was for the Serge modular system in a two piece metal arch and the other was a MOTM system to match the Roland 700 system."

007: Kebu

"I♥SYNTHS: What was your first synthesizer?

Kebu: A new Kawai K1 II, which I hated because it didn’t have a decent piano sound and the black keys were harder to press than the white keys. I probably would appreciate it now for what it is, but back then I would have needed a PCM-based workstation, like a Korg M1 that I lusted for, but couldn’t afford back then. Soon after, I found a used Roland SC-155 (Sound Canvas module), which I really liked but realized that I really need the patch storage capability for live use, which the SC-155 lacked. I then realized that synths are VERY different from each other. Not in terms of nuances, like with different types of guitars, but more like apples and oranges. I also realized that by learning and trading on the second hand market I could try many different synths without loosing too much money. So the Kaway K1 was the first and only new synth I ever bought. After that, I’ve had over one hundred different hardware synths."

006: Soft Lighting

"I♥SYNTHS: What’s your go-to piece of gear that defines the Soft Lighting sound?

Soft Lighting: I usually choose a different set of tools for each album because I think it helps give that body of work a uniqueness. The first album, “Slow Motion Silhouettes” was all done on the Juno 60 and the drums where a lot of old Casios so it has a real washed out lo fi vibe. “Portraits” was made with the DX7, Juno 106 and Roland drum machines so it has a cleaner more digital sound. Now I’m working a lot with my Virus TI which is taking the sound out of the realm of vintage 80s and taking it to a more contemporary place."

005: Synth.nl

"I♥SYNTHS: What was your first synthesizer and how old were you when you started collecting?

Synth.nl: I still remember exactly what my first synthesizer was, the Yamaha TX81Z. It is a rack module so I had to buy an extra midi keyboard, that at that time wasn’t even velocity sensitive. It must have been around 1987 when it was just released. So, I was 17 I guess. That adds up, since I bought it from the money I got to buy a moped from my parents, when I didn’t smoke until my 16th birthday. I guess their trick worked since I still don’t smoke. I also still have the TX81Z with my original sounds I made back then. I can also remember well, that FM programming was not easy and still isn’t easy."

004: Richard Devine

"I♥SYNTHS: What is your go-to synthesizer when writing music? Is there one synth that defines the Richard Devine sound?

Richard Devine: My go synth would have to be the Nord G2 modular. This is hands down one of my favorite synthesizers. The concept is that its a virtual modular software environment where you can create basically anything you want. You then can assign multiple pages and knobs over the the synthesizer for all your patches. So ahead of its time, and I wish Clavia would bring it back."

003: Dallas Campbell

"I♥SYNTHS: When did you start collecting gear and what is your prized possession?

Dallas Campbell: This dude I knew in college let my roommate and I borrow a four track cassette recorder. I was pretty much hooked on gear and music after that. I started buying synths about 10 or so years ago. I’m guessing the rarest thing I have is a Yamaha SY20. I don’t think it was ever released outside of Japan. All the writing on the synth is in Japanese! My favorite synth is probably my SCI Pro-One for mono and the Korg Polysix for poly. As for favorite fx units, I would say the Dimension D Chorus, Multivox Multiecho Delay, the Eventide Space Reverb, and the Roland SBF-325 flanger."

002: RetroSound

"I♥SYNTHS: What is your favorite synthesizer that you can’t live without?

RetroSound: My absolute favorite synthesizer ever is the Oberheim OB-X (not the later OB-Xa). The raw sound and the power is pure sex. It’s really the best!"

001: FM Attack

"I♥SYNTHS: If you were stuck on an island with one synth from your collection, what would you bring?

FM Attack: That’s a tough question. I think I would probably go with the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5"

MFB Microzwerg MkII

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The mk2 version is technically identical to the old version but it comes in a nice looking, black anodized metal housing with wooden sides.

The Microzwerg not only bridges the gap between Nanozwerg and Kraftzwerg. Due to its dual multimode-filter, it also offers an individual signal-path with specific sound potential. Microzewrg's numerous patch connections are perfect for interfacing with other analog synthesizers or sequencers.

The Microzwerg Mk2 has 2 x VCOs, 2 x multi-mode filters, 1 x ADSR envelope and 2 x LFOs.

Oscillators: VCO1: triangle, sawtooth, square and needle impulse VCO2: triangle, sawtooth, square and noise. Maximum detuning of oscillators is one octave. Oscillator synchronisation possible via a patch cable.

The 2 x filters are 12dB/octave state variable multi-mode filters with resonance up to self-oscillation and the filter types available are low pass, band pass, high pass and notch (band reject). The filters are coupled serially for creating new filter types like dual band passes or to double the slope when both filters are set to the same filter type. By patching a cable you can set both filters parallel. there are common cutoff and resonance controls for both filters. the space control shifts the cutoff frequencies. Each filter has an own audio input e.g. for filtering external aufio signals.

The envelope is a classic ADSR type.

The 2 x LFOs offer 4 x waveform shapes each and a one-shot-function, where the selected waveform is played only once after a gate-trigger, thus imitating a simple envelope that might be used for pitch or VCA control. LFO 2 includes a sample & hold. Internal modulation wirings offer LFO control over the filters' cutoff as well as the oscillators' pitch or VCO 2's pulse width. LFO 2's speed can be modulated by an external control voltage, allowing increasing or decreasing the speed by a factor of 30. Using this feature, the Microzwerg is capable of extreme slow and fast modulations.

The signal-path VCO 1/2-VCF 1/2-VCA as well as the common main modulations is internally prewired, so that Microzwerg can be played immediately. All further routings are created using the patch jacks. These can be used or controlled by Microzwerg itself or any compatible external device.

The Microzwerg can be controlled by MIDI from any compatible keyboard or DAW. Note commands are received as well as pitch-wheel (+/- 2 semitones) and modulation-wheel data, the latter controlling the filter's cutoff frequency.

Features

Semi-modular analogue synthesizer
Dual oscillator, dual multimode-filter
Separate inputs/outputs for both filters
18 patch connections in signal chain
2 x LFOs with One Shot-function
CV/gate and MIDI control"

The Emphase Synthesizer by NONLINEAR LABS

Note this is the first NONLINEAR LABS post.

Some details via NONLINEAR LABS:

"The housing of the Emphase synthesizer consists of two parts: the performance cabinet and the creation cabinet. The performance cabinet is very compact, but it contains all of the instrument's processor and audio components; it can be used separately from the creation cabinet in "play only" situations. The creation cabinet is a detachable extension of the user interface for sonic exploration and sound design and can also be useful for controlling a complex performance. It requires a connection to the performance cabinet for operation.

The modular design is open for variable user interface concepts. The current configuration:
- Four Selection Panels, each with 24 buttons with corresponding state-indicating LEDs. The software-defined functions of the buttons are indicated by interchangeable magnetic foils.
- Edit Panel with 18 buttons, an incremental encoder, and a 256 x 64 OLED display

Functions:
Parameter editing:
- selecting parameters
- displaying labels and values of parameters
- changing values
Presets:
- browsing, selecting and recalling presets
- storing the current edit buffer as new preset
- overwriting, deleting, moving and sorting of presets
Morphing:
- between two presets

"The best event I ever went to at a trade show was sponsored by NED. It was at AES, and was a private party at the Palladium in NYC. I managed to get a couple of the metal embossed tickets. It seemed like a normal product presentation, until they announced Sting. Sting came out and sang to a track played by the Synclavier. This was right before his first solo album had come out. Then Sting, said. 'Let's bring out Branford Marsalis.' He came out playing a soprano sax. Then Sting, one by one, brought out his new touring band that had supported on the his solo album. It was a great night of new music."

Dave Smith Instruments... designed and built in San Francisco, USA!

A DSI press release just sent my way. Note it's pre-NAMM. Saving it for the archives.

"SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, USA: Premier polyphonic synthesizer manufacturer Dave Smith Instruments is proud to design and build its illustrious instruments in San Francisco, USA in an American success story fit for the 2014 NAMM Show and beyond.

'We take the craftsmanship of our instruments very seriously,' says company founder and renowned designer Dave Smith. 'So every one of our products is built in San Francisco, California. Unlike other companies, who may build some products in the USA, but bring in others from China, even our low-cost instruments are built here. Our synthesis technology, developed over the last 40 years, allows us to hit great price points, have the most advanced features, build only with metal and wood — no plastic cases! — and still build everything in the good old USA.'

San Francisco-born, UC Berkeley-educated Smith is an archetypical Californian through and through. Responsible for the pre-eminent Prophet-5, the world’s first programmable polyphonic synthesizer back in 1978, he grew his first commercial company, Sequential Circuits, from garage to sizeable San Jose-based success story, playing a pivotal part as the primary driving force behind MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) in the process.

Smith subsequently returned to hardware instrument design in 2002, founding Dave Smith Instruments while working solo from his home in the Napa Valley wine country. Early successes with the Evolver range of analog/digital synthesizers — indeed, DSI’s first product is still shipping to this day — led to him hiring his first two employees in 2007. Continuing to work from their respective Californian homes, this coincided with the introduction of the award-winning Prophet ’08, an eight-voice synthesizer keyboard with a 100% analog signal path; eight-voice polyphony with four-on-four splits and layers; 16 x 4 gated step sequencer; and a full-size, 61-note, semi-weighted keyboard. It, too, continues to make musical waves worldwide.

As a growing Californian concern, Dave Smith Instruments has not looked back since, continuing its forward- looking manufacturing mission with a successful succession of innovative instruments, including the Mopho range of compact and affordable analog synthesizers; the Tetra polyphonic desktop analog synthesizer module; the Tempest analog drum machine (designed by Smith in collaboration with fellow Californian innovative electronic musical instrument designer Roger Linn); and, most recently, the Prophet 12 module, a space-saving tabletop and rack-ready reworking of its 2013 NAMM Show-launched Prophet 12 keyboard, the twelve-voice hybrid digital/ analog synthesizer flagship that Smith duly declared his 'best synth yet.'

Today, San Francisco is its beneficiary, for the now-nine-staff-strong Dave Smith Instruments collectively work in the heart of the city’s historic North Beach district, just a short walk from its manufacturer.

Dave Smith Instruments’ evolving family of illustrious instruments designed and built in San Francisco will be being demoed and displayed in Hall B, Booth 5400 at the 2014 NAMM Show, January 23-26 in Anaheim, California.

About Dave Smith Instruments (www.davesmithinstruments.com)

Established in 2002, Dave Smith Instruments is the preeminent manufacturer of polyphonic synthesizers. It is helmed by legendary musical instrument designer Dave Smith, whose innovations include designing the Prophet-5, the world’s first fully programmable polyphonic synthesizer, and acting as the primary driving force behind MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) — he coined the acronym, in fact — for which he received a Technical Grammy® award in 2013. Dave Smith Instruments’ products are used by an ever-increasing roster of well-known musicians and are available from music retailers worldwide. Instruments include the versatile analog/digital hybrid Evolver synthesizers, the Tempest analog drum machine, the all-analog Prophet ’08, and the affordable Mopho line of synthesizers. DSI’s highly-praised, award-winning Prophet 12 combines the best of digital and analog processing in an advanced, powerful instrument that is both respectful of its lineage and a significant technological leap forward. Dave Smith Instruments is based in San Francisco, California, where its instruments are also manufactured."

Prophet ’08 polysynth continues to be bestseller for DSI

A DSI press release just sent my way. Note it's pre-NAMM. Saving it for the archives.

"SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, USA: In 2013, sales of Dave Smith Instruments’ award-winning Prophet ’08 eight-voice analog synthesizer was greater than all previous years, with the exception of its inaugural year.

'The Prophet ’08 has been a remarkably consistent seller for us since 2007,' confirms company founder and renowned designer Dave Smith. 'Part of that is due to lack of competition in the analog polysynth market, but it’s also attributable to our general design philosophy. In an age where electronic devices are largely disposable — and that includes some musical instruments, we don’t develop our instruments to be supplanted by ‘next year’s model.’ Though we always strive to improve in some way with each new product, the goal is always excellence. An instrument should be intuitive and inspiring in two, five, ten, or twenty years, and not obsolete. And it should sound great, regardless of age or cost. There shouldn’t be a different standard for electronic instruments than there is for acoustic instruments in that regard.'

As an eight-voice synthesizer keyboard with a 100% analog signal path; four-on-four splits and layers; 16 x 4 gated step sequencer; and a full-size, 61-note, semi-weighted keyboard, the Prophet ’08 marked a turning point for Dave Smith Instruments in more ways than one — not least that its introduction coincided with Smith hiring his first two employees to help move the company and its increasing line of illustrious instruments forward. And anyone with an appreciation of synthesizer history could hardly help but notice that the innovative individual responsible for the pre-eminent Prophet-5, the world’s first programmable polyphonic synthesizer back in 1978, as well as playing a pivotal part as the driving force behind MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), had transported the prestigious Prophet name to the present day.

As a direct descendant of the Prophet-5, the Prophet ’08 keyboard and its 2008-launched space-saving tabletop (and rack-mountable) module counterpart (that can be used as an expander to increase the polyphony of another Prophet ’08 keyboard or module to 16 voices) are both capable of reproducing the still-sought-after sounds of their legendary ancestor. But both boast more modern features like a greatly expanded modulation matrix and additional modulation sources — such as three envelopes and four LFOs per voice — that take them way beyond vintage instruments as equally worthy and unique additions to the Prophet family tree.

Says Smith: 'In 1978, I never envisioned people playing my instruments 35 years later. I just wanted to make great synths. But the reality is, if an instrument sounds good and invites interaction with the player, it will continue to inspire creativity and be useful.'

Creativity is surely priceless, yet six years after its inauguration, and showing no signs of slowing down, the Prophet ’08 still represents remarkable value and continues to make musical waves worldwide.

Dave Smith Instruments’ present-day Prophet range will be being demoed and displayed in Hall B, Booth 5400 at the 2014 NAMM Show, January 23-26 in Anaheim, California.

The Prophet ’08 keyboard and Prophet ’08 module have an MAP of $2,309.00 USD and $1,699.00 USD, respectively, and can both be purchased from any authorized DSI dealer."
