New Drum Kits Coming to Roland's AIRA TR-8

On the main AIRA thread on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge, someone asked if the TR-8 can be expanded.

David of Innerclock Systems brought up a good point:

"16 kit slots - only three loaded - watch this space :)"

Note, the original press release mentioned: "16 stunning kits made up of 11 instrument types, including custom dream kits that use both TR-808 and TR-909 sounds"

The key is only three are currently loaded.

The next likely question asked was if the TR-606, TR-707, TR-626 and TR-727 were on the way. David replied "Unconfirmed. But they ain't silly...... All that circuit and microscopic analysis takes time"

It isn't too much of a leap considering the new System-1 also has the ability to load different synth engines with both the SH-101 and SH-2 planned. Regardless, the TR-8 will likely not be just a TR-808 and TR-909 clone, but much more.

David adds: "I'm thinking two TR-8s locked up with combo sounds/different pattern lengths will be killer......" Indeed.

Pictured: "...the gene pool......" also from David Lackey on The MATRISYNTH Lounge

Update: some comments are coming in on MATRIXSYNTH Facebook regarding this news as well.  People want to see it happen.

The Benjolin Workshop (Manchester UK – 30th March 2014)

"Open-Circuit is pleased to announce a day of Circuit Bending & DIY Analog Electronics…

In a one-day workshop conducted by legendary synth builder Rob Hordijk and circuit bender Joker Nies, participants will build the Benjolin, an analog sound-device that is different from what you usually find with other DIY-kits. This kit will ONLY be available through the workshop, it is not for sale separately. You will take home an analog synth, and you can tell everyone that you`ve built it yourself!

The Benjolin is a ‘noise box’ that is ‘bent by design’, meaning that it always has a definite amount of unpredictability while it is still intuitive to play. The Benjolin features two eighteen-octave range voltage controlled oscillators that drive a ‘rungler’ circuit, circuitry that in essence uses a special interference technique feeding back into the oscillators to force them into wild chaotic behavior. A special slightly chaotic filter with a unique topology that imparts a layer of all harmonic distortion to the filter outputs is both excited and modulated by the signals from the rungler circuitry, producing sounds between fat drones to grungy noise havoc. The kit is somewhat challenging to build, but with a little patience and accuracy a beginner in DIY can definitely do it successfully.

Rob Hordijk’s benjolin circuit is really like no other synth/noisemaker out there.

Spaces are limited so we are asking for a £50 deposit to ensure a place with the remaining £80 to be paid on the day…. Please follow the link for more info and to reserve a space.

This video shows the soon to be released telePort Control App in its iPhone form.
On the side the iPad version is also running - which will be the focus point of the upcoming release video - but the focus here is on using the phone as
a controller for an instrumentalist doing live looping music with telePort.

Earlier videos have focused much more on the live sequencing (synth) ways of using telePort. This video tries to show how that way can meet with this way, and hints at that there's really no reason why only One person should be playing with a computer running telePort at a time :)
A ridiculous 16 iOS devices can be connected to a single computer running telePort, and they will each and all show what is being done on any one of them.

telePort is a live performance oriented music program that will shortly be made available in its next level prototype form for Mac and Windows - along with the Universal App.
It lets you integrate hardware and software instruments as one advanced combined, programmable and morphable instrument.
Bringing a modular approach to (augmented) sequencing and mixing while at the same making it easy switching between completely different songs/tracks, or changing the modules up independently as the music is playing.
The goal being creating a very flexible music system where you can have a whole set, not just a song, at your fingertips and improvise or play structured parts based on rules you define freely."

Doepfer A-137 Wave Multiplier

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"a-137 is a voltage controlled wave multiplier. the basic idea of a wave multiplier is to multiply the waveform of an incoming signal (e.g. triangle/saw/sine from a vco) within one period of the waveform. this leads to additional harmonics of the incoming signal. the period and consequently the pitch of the signals remains unchanged (in contrast to frequency multiplication e.g. with the pll module . the a-137 works as a kind of "inverse low pass filter", i.e. it adds a lot of harmonics to a signal that contains none or only a few harmonics (e.g. sine or triangle waveform). in contrast to that a low pass filter removes harmonics from a signal that contains a lot of harmonics (e.g. saw or rectangle waveform). consequently the best results are obtained in combination with input signals poor in harmonics (e.g. sine or triangle). the a-137 can be used with signals rich in harmonics too (e.g. saw) but the effect is not as remarkable as for triangle or sine waves. for rectangle signals none or only little effects are obtained.

the a-137 is a very sophisticated wave multiplier that offers much more features, more controls and more waveform manipulations than other wave multipliers available so far. in addition all parameters are both manually adjusted and controlled by external voltages. these are the features of the module:

controls:
* input level (to adjust the input level for best effect of the succeeding controls)
* multiples (number of waveform multiplications, manual control)
* harmonics (additional effect that adds more harmonics similar to the resonance/emphasis control of filters, manual control)
* folding level (controls upper and lower folding level, manual control)
* symmetry (controls symmetry between upper and lower folding level, manual control)

inputs/outputs:
* audio in (also suitable for control signals)
* multiples cv in (with attenuator)
* harmonics cv in (with attenuator)
* folding level cv in (with attenuator)
* symmetry cv in (with attenuator)
* audio out (resp. processed control signal output)

the multiples parameter (manual and ext. cv) defines the number of basic wave multiplications within one period. with the folding level and symmetry parameter (both manual and ext. cv) the upper and lower clipping levels of the wave folder units are controlled. the harmonics parameter (manual and ext. cv) adds some harmonic content by sharpening the waveform edges and adding overshoot peaks. it works a little bit like the resonance control of a vcf. the module is fully dc coupled, i.e. even control signal can be processed with the modules.

as it is a little bit difficult to describe the parameters only by words we have some pictures and audio examples available that explain the function of the module and its parameters.

the level control is used to adjust the the input signal (audio or control signal) to a level that creates the best effects when the 4 parameters of the module are altered. the signal is processed by a vca and 4 so-called wave folding stages. from the parameters folding level and symmetry the upper and folding level is derived for each stage. at the clipping levels the signal is "folded back", i.e. the direction is inverted or the signal is "reflected" at the clipping line. the working principle of the first folding stage is shown in the next picture. as the module contains 4 folding stages up to 8 foldings are possible (4 at the upper and 4 at the lower clipping level).

the incoming signal of each stage is folded back as soon as the signal level goes beyond the upper clipping level resp. is folded up as soon is goes below the lower clipping level users will know this function, indeed the a-137 includes 4 stages similar to. as mentioned above upper and lower clipping level are controlled by the folding level and symmetry controls (both manual and cv controlled). from our point of view these parameters are easier to use than upper and lower clipping level. the internal upper and lower clipping levels are derived by adding resp. subtracting the folding level and symmetry voltages. the vca setting (multiples control) defines the number of wave multiplications or foldings as the multiplications depend upon the level that appears at the folding stages. smaller levels lead to less multiples, higher levels cause more multiples as the folded output signal of the preceeding stage has sufficient level for a subsequent folding in the next stage.

the harmonics control sharpens the waveform slopes and adds some overshoot at the edges - a little bit like the resonance control of a filter. internally the harmonics feature is realized by an additional vca for each folding stage..."

Cyclone Analogic TT303 Bass Bot Roland TB-303 Clone

"The Bass Bot is an analog, monophonic synthesizer and sequencer, an incredible reproduction of one of the most sought-after analog synths ever. The sound is authentic not because of good sampling or modeling, but because it uses identical circuitry - classic transistor-based circuit design, using 21st century technology.

The sequencer uses classic step-entry programming, and stores up to 224 editable patterns, as well as 224 bot-generated preset (non-editable) patterns. The Bass Bot holds 7 songs of up to 127 bars, with everything stored in onboard flash memory - which means it will stay there when you turn the unit off.

The TT-303 is indispensible for acid and techno house music, great for hip-hop, and just a whole lot of fun! Fatboy Slim says "Everybody Needs a 303!" - here is your chance to get one.

There is an innofensive small sticker on the woodwork from a performance, easily removed. (see images)."

"The Lambda ES50 is a vintage poly-ensemble type synthesizer with slightly editable Preset orchestral sounds. It is divided into two sections: The Percussion set includes Preset pianos, clavis and harmonics; The Ensemble section has Presets for brass, strings, organ and choruses. Filter and envelope controls affect the different instruments individually. The Lambda has 96 discrete envelopes and VCAs - two for each key - a very unusual design. There are also vibrato and chorus effects.

The Percussion group and Ensemble group each have their own separate outputs which is nice. A joystick is proveded left of the keyboard for simultaneous control of pitch bends and chorus phase speed.

The String sounds are the nicest sounds this synth can create. With three oscillators you can vary and detune them enough to get a nice layered analog string. ,mThe Lambda is cased in a great wooden case that gives it that authentically vintage status."

MOOG SOUND LAB | Lost in the Trees | Past Life

Published on Feb 18, 2014 Moog Music Inc·261 videos

"Chapel Hill ensemble 'Lost in the Trees' came to the Moog Sound Lab to give us a sneak peak at the title track off their new album "Past Life". Using an array of analog synthesizers and effects, the band recreated the dark harmonies and lush soundscapes of Past Life.

Bassist Mark Daumen had this to say about the session,

"In all honesty, I was slightly nervous walking in to the Moog factory for our session. We had little planned besides what song we were going to play. With the unlimited options for sounds from the many instruments available and our limited knowledge of analog synths, I figured the session could have gone either way. The nervousness faded quickly with the guidance of the wonderful folks at Moog who taught me that it's really ok to just turn knobs until it sounds cool. Anyone listening to the first half hour of us trying to figure out the song might have thought we were completely over our heads, but then suddenly Past Life started to emerge. Before we knew it we had dialed in some magic and were really enjoying the beauty and uniqueness of the sounds and music we were making. We are obviously enjoying it so much that we cant seem to stop repeating the ending over and over again, like we are figuring out something new and wonderful we could play on our Moogs with each refrain."

"When you're looking, you'll probably know: this is one great vintage synthesizer.

Its sound can go anywhere, from deep bass to the weirdest fx - and anything in between.

4 (!) oscillators (2 of which can serve as LFO), nice multimode filter, many patchpoints, pre-amp, mono or duophonic playing, 2 envelopes - modulation on this synth is great. And the sound is so very outstandingly vintage!

No wonder it's been a Pere Ubu (check them out!) favourite for many years. Keyboardists came and went, but the EML101 stayed ;-)

This particular EML 101 is in perfect working conditions, all functions work as they should - the vco tracking is amazing (though it requires adjustment when switching from monophonic to duophonic playing) but you'll find out, this synthesizer has so much up its sleeve, definitely not an ordinary synth. Very rare and collectible, particularly in this condition..."

AR sliders aren't as smooth as the others, but work well and haven't bothered me enough to replace. 3 new spare sliders are included, one of each kind the synth uses. The filter is a 4075 modified for higher cutoff (google it for details). All capacitors on the power rails of all 5 circuit boards were replaced. Ships in the original anvil case that's been de-foamed. It will be mummified in bubble wraps, tracked and insured."
