The Technos Acxel Resynthesizer Overview Videos

Published on Mar 5, 2014 Kevin Kelley·2 videos

"This is the full length video demonstration for the Technos Acxel re-synthesizer from around 1988. There are two parts to this video"

Technos Acxel part 2

This one is in via Kevin Kelley who let me know he will be uploading some user demos in the future as well. Can't wait! The Acxell Resynthesizer has only been featured on the site a handful of times. It is a rare synthesizer sold between 1987 and 1990 according to Wikipedia. Their is a new Axcel2. You can find information on the main Axcel2 website here.

On the original Axcel via Wikipedia:
"The word Acxel is short for 'acoustical element' (as pixel is short for "picture element".)
The Acxel consists on 2 components: The "Grapher" (graphic console) and the "Solitary" (Rackmount containing the Synthesis and Analysis hardware). Standard - 256 Oscillators (8 voices), up to 1024 Oscillators (32 voices).
Instead of having an LCD or CRT screen, the Axcel has a bank of 2114 LEDs mounted behind finger-sized conductive sensors (a smaller number were also used on the Technos 16\pi synthesizer main panel). All data readouts, and a lot of data input, are processed using this innovative method.
The 16\pi is the Acxel ancestor (1984 - never in production, 4 unit delivered at that time), introducing the concept but limited to 64 Oscillators, including a keyboard.

The Acxel never found mainstream favour and was never a commercial success, due to its high cost, and relative difficulty of use. As a result of this, Acxels today are very rare (about 35 were sold from 1987 to 1990), obscure and expensive, and they never did replace traditional sampler as was their intention. Their legacy, however, lives on in modern-day resynthesizers such as VirSyn's Cube, Camel Audio's Cameleon 5000, and Image-Line's Harmor."

Madrona Labs News - Kaivo Arrives, Update on the Soundplane

via Madrona Labs

"Kaivo is here!

I've spent the last few weeks here in the labs finishing and tuning physical models for Kaivo, our new software synthesizer. I spent a lot of the previous two years taking it from conception to product, with the help of some talented friends. Today, you get to play with it! “Kaivo” is Finnish for “well,” as in, a deep well of sounds, and I've been working on deepening that well. Kaivo's models now include metal, nylon and gut strings, different sizes of chimes and springs, wooden instrument bodies, and true 2D membranes and plates.

In case you missed it, here's what Kaivo does:

Kaivo combines granular synthesis with physical modeling. Physical modeling is a way of making sounds using equations that model vibrating objects in real time. Every time a model is triggered, it makes a slightly different sound depending on the initial conditions when the sound starts. This gives sounds a subtle and lifelike variety that would be tedious, insane, or impossible to recreate with sampling.

Mathematically speaking, Kaivo's finite difference time domain (FDTD) models let you reach inside the instrument and affect the internal vibrations at any point. Imagine being able to hear the bridge rattles on a gut string model, for example, or the different places a stick might strike on a metal plate. While Kaivo is capable of making very realistic sounds, it is also designed to reward abstract exploration.

Expansive spatial sounds are possible in Kaivo, with independent panning available on grains, resonators, and body. Kaivo’s granulator feeds all of its models from a 2D map of sound with up to four channels. The body is a true 2D vibrating model of a physical object, with left and right pickups that create a spatialized mix of all the frequencies flowing through it.

We imagine that Kaivo will be right at home in the toolbox of sonic explorers, soundtrack designers, and lovers of warm, organic sounds. Those of you who are already Aalto users will find Kaivo's design very familiar; it's also fully resizable, with the same patcher interface to facilitate user-friendly experimentation.

Our beta testers have been hard at work putting together some crazy new sounds with Kaivo. You can hear some of their experiments on the Madrona Labs users group on Soundcloud, and try them out in the downloadable patches.

Kaivo is $129. Available now for Mac and Windows at http://madronalabs.com.

Soundplane News

Of course, Kaivo is designed to work wonders with the Soundplane over OSC just like Aalto. Now Soundplane owners have two software instruments specifically tailored for them. I can tell you this about controlling the granulator and physical model parameters by 3D touch: it feels amazing. And now that Kaivo is out, I'm excited to do some more playing myself.

The next run of Soundplanes is planned for this Spring. As soon as the dust settles on the Kaivo release, I'll begin taking orders. Please stay tuned.

Enjoy,
Randy"

Electrodark on Korg Volca Boxes + Kaossilator 2 + Arturia Microbrute

Published on Mar 5, 2014 PanzerLyu·13 videos

"Another obscure dance song to test the entire Korg Volca series,
plus Korg Kaossilator 2 for the main rhythm drum, and Arturia Microbrute for a second bass line.
I tried to create the sound of a guitar with Korg Volca Keys (first pattern), using the LFO, cutoff and a little delay.

As I played it live without any reharsal, a problem emerged:
Korg Kaossilator 2 ,not midi sync at all, went off beat in the first part , so I had to stop it for a moment,
and then restart it in time with Korg Volca Beats.
I'm not really satisfied about the execution, but I like the groove of the song.
Probably I'll keep it to develope it for my band.

As usual, no daw, no overdubbing

If you like it, please leave a comment!"

"Very rare Ensoniq Mirage DSK-8 vintage sampler keyboard in very good condition, it has 100V AC in and Asian/Australian version of design, comes with FDD disks, power cord and 2 Japanese manuals.

Very fat and powerful vintage sound, analog filters, a lot of synthesis parameters etc... here is the description from Synthmuseum:

The Mirage is an 8-bit sampling keyboard with 8-voice polyphony and a 61-note, 5 octave, velocity sensitive keyboard, including a pitch bend and a modulation wheel. It also has a polyphonic sequencer, and quite a few (for the time) synthesizer/sampler editing parameters. With features like this, the Mirage was the first practical sampling keyboard for under $2,000 (original list price was $1,695). Sounds were stored using a built-in 3.5 disk drive. Each disk had a capacity of 400k, so, depending on the size of the samples, a disk can hold up to 48 sampled sounds an 24 programs. The Mirage had 144k of internal RAM. The sequencer holds eight 333 event sequences, expandable to 1333 via an optional RAM cartridge. The Sequencer records pitch-bend, key velocity, modulation, and sustain pedal information.

The Mirage samples at a variable sampling rate of 8kHz-33kHz, using eight-bit floating point conversion for a reported 16-bit (96dB) dynamic range. Each sample can be truncated, looped, tuned/detuned, and then layered (up to 16 samples) across the keyboard. It has a variable anti-aliasing filter, selectable input levels, variable sampling threshold, dynamic voice assignment, velocity control of oscillator mix, release velocity control of envelope release rate, keyboard scaling of decay rate, and velocity control of attack time.

On the back panel of the Mirage are MIDI IN, THRU, and OUT ports, a sustain pedal input, which can be switched to sequencer start/stop."

Roland DDR-30 "Full menu" demo

"Since I still haven't seen as advanced DDR-30 demonstration as this one, I decided to upload it for everyone. It's been long time but I think I originally found this demo from old Ebay listing. Also by uploading this, I don't need to do better one by myself (I own DDR-30 too). Please let me know if the original author wants the video to be removed.

Roland's DDR-30 was their very first digital drum module from 1984. The module includes fantastic 12-bit crunchy and punchy samples mainly from Linndrum and Simmons drums but also some others too. But unlike other sample based drum modules, this one got quite advanced programmable dynamics.

The only famous artist I recall using DDR-30 was Klaus Schulze."

Well, recently I started doing just that, starting all the way back in the 60's in black and white with the 1st Doctor. While watching the show, I really fell in love with the theme song, and how it has stayed, for the most part, the same for all these years. So, here is my take on the theme song from Dr. Who. Share it with all your Whovian friends!

Note, I was crazy sick while recording this. Mostly this just meant 3x as many takes on each part, because my reflexes and muscle memory were not really "on". Anyways, hope you enjoy it."
