Modular jam: René & BeatStep & SNAZZY FX:Ardcore [HD Quality]

"Rat(s)h(*)t sketch programmed by Thomas Whiston (starts to trigger brass-like sound at 01:56). The trigger generator is based very loosely on some of the ideas in the Buchla/Eardrill Pendulum Ratchet module, designed to replicate some outputs from the a and b output sections, so clock is divided as well as being tested against some number tables.

DACS Freque II Ring Modulator Demo

Published on Apr 15, 2014 perfectcircuitaudio·58 videos

"This is a demo of the DACS Freque II processing a TR-909, Nord Wave, Pro-One, and TR-606. Enjoy!"

via this auction

"Produce pumping tracks that stand out from the crowd with the FwS FREQue II (pronounced "freak"), a genuinely new and inspirational analogue effects processor.

The Effects

With low frequency modulation inputs: Simple to complex autopan effects, gating, amplitude modulation, flanging, spatialising

With mid frequency modulation inputs: Vocoding type effects, adding tunable harmonics, both lower down to subsonic, and up to supersonic, second harmonic distortion (like valves/tubes), harmonising, retuning percussion, gating, general rich distortion, Sci-Fi voices (eg a Dalek)

With high frequency modulation inputs: Transposition with distortion, adding glitter, air, sparkle etc when mixed back into original

With music or sounds into both inputs: Vocoding effects, gating effects, fattening/thickening effects, spatial effects, weird transformations

Internal FM: Frequency Modulation of modulation oscillator at all frequencies, giving effects ranging from slow pulsation to the classic FM generation of complex waveforms

External voltage control of oscillators: Envelope follower effects, FM effects as above, randomised autopanning

Frequency shift: Up and down shift of frequency with change in harmonic structure, with FM for sliding effects, using feedback loop to create filter type sweeps

Application Ideas

This section is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all that can be done with the FREQue II. Rather it is a list of starting points for you to begin experiments from. Using the FREQue II, producers and engineers can almost infinitely extend the voices of their existing battery of synthesisers and sound generators and create vast ranges of completely new sounds, add depth and warmth to early digital synthesisers, give drums new power, radically transform voices...

Some treatments will require mixing with the original signal and some will need to be kept separate. For example adding distortion to a continuous sound will need mixing while gating effects will not.

Tone and Music:

Set Up: Feed a stable tone, or a slightly varying one, into the MOD input and the music or tune into the MUSIC input. The MOD input could be from the internal oscillator. If the MOD input is harmonically related to the key of the music the OUTPUT will tend to be harmonic e.g. the MOD input is a D and the music is in the key of D, then the output will tend to be harmonically rich. If the MOD input is not related, then the output will be rough, bell like and/or noisy depending on the frequency of the input.

Try this: Use held chords that have a certain amount of vibrato - as the pitch of the chords varies so the harmonic content of the sound will vary. Vary the MOD frequency to generate sliding upper and lower harmonics, Use randomly generated frequencies from synthesisers on MOD input, Try varying the edge controls contrariwise i.e. turn one up as you turn the other down, to produce stereo effects, Have a go at the 1st oscillator range to produce gating effects, the 2nd range to produce tremolo effects, the 3rd range to produce heavy modulation effects while the 4th range will produce higher and higher harmonic effects

Drums:

Set Up: Feed percussive sounds into the MUSIC input and tones or other sounds into the MOD input. The MUSIC input will then act as a trigger and give a gating effect, only producing OUTPUT when the MUSIC input signal is present.

Try this: Vary the MOD input frequency to produce output harmonically related to the music, Feed the melody into the MOD input and the percussion will 'play the tune', or at least tend to go up and down with it, Feed any old music to the MOD to produce an effect similar to scratching, Feed the MOD input with carefully selected samples synchronised with the percussive sounds, Using the FREQue II's oscillator set on the 2nd or 3rd range generate deep deep bass sub harmonics on bass drums, Using the oscillator set on the 4th range generate grain, grit and glitter on snares, hi hats, cymbals, maracas

Vocal Inputs:

Set Up: Feed your voice into the MUSIC input and feed a variety of signals into the MOD input - music, tone, noise...

Try this: Use the voice to gate the MOD inputs, Use the voice as a percussion imitator to produce hot rhythm sections from modulated MOD inputs, Try the 1st range to produce gating and heavy breathing effects, the 2nd range to produce tremolo and panting effects, the 3rd range to produce heavy modulation effects (Dalek/sci-fi voices among others) while the 4th range will produce higher and higher harmonic effects

Same signal or L & R of stereo into both inputs:

Set Up: Feed the same signal or the left and right of a stereo signal into the MUSIC and MOD inputs.

Try this: Mix the output into the original signal to harmonically enhance the signal, Left and right inputs into MOD and MUSIC inputs respectively on both modules can produce phasing and other spectral phenomena, particularly if the spectral controls are varied, Try varying the edge and/or weight controls contrariwise i.e. turn one up as you turn the other down, to produce stereo effects

Delay/feedback:

Set Up: Use a delay line to process signals going in to or out from the units

Try this: Feed audio out back to MUSIC input via delay at tempo or multiple of tempo, Do the above with long decays on the end of sounds, Split the signal to both inputs and use delay line on one input to produce weird flanging effects on output, pan both outputs centrally or left and right

Multiple Modulation:

Set Up: Feed music into the MUSIC input of one modulator and use the internal oscillator to modulate it. Take this OUT to the MUSIC input of the second modulator and modulate it with the same internal oscillator. The result is that the original signal is reconstituted and additional higher partials are also added."

Fairlight Sample Set Coming to Clavia / Nord Keyboards

via Nord Keyboards where you'll find links to some demos (on the left when you get there).  Also be sure to see the other sample sets available including the Chamberlin, Mellotron and more. The following is an excerpt on the Fairlight get for the archives.

"Not many instruments has made as big an impact on shaping sound of an era as much as the Fairlight™ digital sampler. The first "Fairlight CMI Series I" was introduced in 1979 and was one of the first commercially available products to allow polyphonic playback of samples.

The Fairlight™ CMI was designed by Peter Vogel and Kim Ryrie in Sydney, Australia. A complete Fairlight™ system constisted of a rack processing unit, a musical keyboard, a computer keyboard and a unique monochrome computer screen. The Fairlight™ had a menu driven graphical interface that could be controlled with a special light sensitive pen.

With a retail price of around 25 000$, buying a Fairlight™ system was out of reach for most mortals but among the first buyers were established artists and producers like Peter Gabriel, Thomas Dolby, Kate Bush, and Richard James Burgess.

The original Fairlight™ could sample in 8-bit, 16 kHz, 8 voice polyphony and had a basic sequencer functionality. Later versions added increased the sample quality, polyphony, added support for MIDI (once it had been invented) and featured a more advanced sequencer known as "Page R".

The last generation of the Fairlight™ CMI, "Series III" was produced in 1985. If you have an iPad, check out Peter Vogel's "Fairlight Pro App" - a total recreation of a Fairlight™ system with support for the original CMI data files. The app let's you try the graphical interface that once revolutionized the music of the 80's.

The samples in our Fairlight™ collection were sampled from an overhauled System IIx (introduced in 1983) and the mapping is very detailed to capture the original sound character. A Fairlight™ instrument consisted of a single 16kb 8 bit sample that was mapped over the entire keyboard, but the voice cards performed some magic that pitched samples up and down in a much more pleasant way than if you were to do this with any generic hardware or software sampler, a very part of the Fairlight sound."

Korg Volca Bass vs. Metasonix TM-7 Scrotum Smasher

"Still learning.

Signal chain for the volca is : MIDI out of computer for sync - Volca Bass - TM-7 - cwejman VCA-4mx - WMD Micro Hadron Collider (this isn't really doing anything) - FoH Sound of Shadows (obviously used delay, not changing the sound much).

There's a little drone thing, that's just a Synth Tech e340 Cloud Generator, and simple filters, nothin crazy.

Drums are in the computer. Though the TM-7 is really good on drums.

Evaton Technologies RF (Radio Frequency) Eurorack Module Prototype - Video Demos & Pics

Uploaded on Apr 14, 2014 matrixsynth·308 videos

http://www.evatontechnologies.com

Be sure to turn this one up! Listen on a system with good bass for some of the lower frequencies. Part 2 with louder volume below followed by some pics.

I was lucky enough to get my hands on a Evaton Technologies prototype RF eurorack module. This is my first go with the module. Please note this is not a musical demo and not a formal demo of the module. I just fired it up, loved what I heard and decided to record it. The RF is a voltage-controlled sideband shortwave receiver. Knobs include "RF Gain" to control the RF signal level, "Tuning" to control the RF frequency, "CV Amount" applied to "Tuning", and "Audio Gain" for the overall output level. All you hear is the RF with some light chorus and reverb. I bring the volume in with the Mattson Mini Modular JP filter. Once it's open it's 100% RF producing all the timbres you hear. I apply CV modulation of the RF Tuner with a Mattson Mini Modular dual LFO, first with the lower rate LFO and then with the higher rate which essentially morphs the RF modulation into audio range for some interesting timbres. At 2:08 that's the RF Tune knob adjusting the sound, not a filter. I also adjust the skew of the incoming Mattson LFO shape (right knob) at 2:50 which gives the effect of adjusting pitch. The only tweaking is what you see as I'm holding the camera with my right hand. I'm curious how it will respond to sequencers and other modulation sources and I'm curious how it will act as a modulation source itself for other modules. This module excels at picking up strange noises from sub oceanic bass to interstellar space. The drawing of the Octopus and the Space Monkey suddenly make sense. I get it and I love this module.

You might want to lower your volume levels for the following video.  Dry signal until 1:23, then some chorus and reverb added.

Surrey Spectrum Frequency Shifter

This is the first Surrey post. Via the listing:

"This is something special and quite unique.. The Spectrum Shifter by Surrey Electronics. Rare audio processing device from the 70-ties, not the same principle as a pitch shifter. A bit like a budget Bode shifter. The slider might need some cleaning but everything works and it is ready to play or mod into...

Please have a look at the pictures and see for yourself. Let me know if you have any questions. Please check my 100% positive, music/synth/studio related feedback. I'm a serious and professional seller AND packer.

Something about frequency shifters from the web:

'a frequency shifter will shift all frequencies additively. Thus, the spectra (overtone content) of the source will become increasingly distorted with shifting. This is opposed to say, a Harmonizer's pitch shifting. Frequency Shifters usually use a quadrature oscillator as the carrier (these were usually voltage-controlled in analog synth oriented models), and at low rates, can be used to reduce microphone feedback. The famous devices designed by Harold Bode can shift up to 5k and good carrier rejection, and were used in electronic music studios to radically alter sounds, especially sources with a lot of noise, such as percussion. FS's were featured in several analog synths, such as the Buchla, Serge (two versions, one with external carrier), and the Moog (licensed from Bode).'"

"August Harp is Davachi's second release, and is reflective of her ongoing exploration into the topography of spectrally immersive textures and aural environments. The compositions on this album consider notions of sustenance, shifting harmonic spectra, psychoacoustic derivation of artificial resultant tones, and interior movement within a semblance of stasis. Over the past five years, Davachi's compositional projects have been primarily concerned with disclosing the antiquated instruments and forgotten sonics of a bygone era in analog synthesis; her work on August Harp puts forth offerings from Buchla & Associates, Sequential Circuits, and EMS (London), subsuming transitions that took place between 1968 and 1981..."

What iPad MIDI Editors Might Look Like Stretched Across a Synth

via Superdan Rosenstark on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge:

"I've been thinking a lot recently about virtual space vs. "real" (physical) space and control. I finally got a 3D artist to do a rendering. This one is for our layout for the Casio XW keyboards... one for our massive layouts for the Roland U.S. JD-990 would probably be more appropriate for this lounge, but anyway... this is just a fun concept image. Hope you dig it and don't mind the plug."

via MIDI Designer: "Virtual space does have its advantages. Here's what the iPad controller for the Casio Music Gear XW line of keyboards looks like if you spread it out.

Find out more:
here"

Like a PPG Realizer on steroids. This is why I was a fan of the iPad from day one. It opens up synths in a way that would be virtually impossible with hardware. Not to mention you can jump spaces on a virtual controller. You can't on hardware sliders and knobs. But it's not one vs. the other. Nothing beets physical knobs and sliders for that tactile experience, but if you can't have them the iPad is the next best thing and it does have some advantages. Check out my FS1R editor - 80 pages and access to over 1000 parameters. Not feasible in hardware.

Switched-On: The Birth of the Moog Synthesizer

"The History Center in Tompkins County Debuts Bob Moog Exhibition

Ithaca, NY - April 2014... The History Center in Tompkins County, in partnership with the Bob Moog Foundation, has announced the opening of the exhibition Switched-On: The Birth of the Moog Synthesizer.

Illustrating the story of Dr. Robert Moog and the creation and evolution of the groundbreaking electronic instruments bearing his name, Switched-On: The Birth of the Moog Synthesizer provides museum visitors with a wide-ranging, interactive insight into Dr. Moog's inventions and the creative process behind their design and development.

Based on interviews with family members, colleagues, and contemporaries, including Herbert Deutsch, Bernie Worrell, Shirleigh Moog, David Borden, and many more, the exhibition provides a unique view into the creative genius of Bob Moog, one of the founding fathers of modern electronic music. With rare Moog instruments such as a vacuum tube theremin, a Trumansburg-era Minimoog, and one of only three R. A. Moog Company PMS-15 amplifiers ever sold, Switched-On: The Birth of the Moog Synthesizer will be the first major exhibition on Bob Moog and Moog Synthesizers to occur in the region, and will run through May 31st, 2015.

Robert Moog came to Ithaca, NY in 1957 to begin his PhD work at Cornell University. He founded the R.A. Moog, Co. in the late 1950s, selling theremins and theremin kits throughout Ithaca. In 1963, Moog opened a storefront for his small factory in nearby Trumansburg, NY. It was there that the Moog modular synthesizer and the iconic Minimoog were born. The factory grew to become a mainstay in the region until Moog sold the company in 1971, and the new owners moved it to Williamsville, NY.

Switched-On: The Birth of the Moog Synthesizer tells the story of Moog's Trumansburg years, through the oral histories of those who knew him, worked with him, and shared his path in shaping a revolution in sound, technology, and music.

More information on the exhibition can be found at www.thehistorycenter.net"

Unfortunately this one isn't working well. Hopefully someone will bring it back to life. I do like the look of the green knobs on this one.

"It's not in good working condition and needs service, that's why we sell it as-is, for spares or parts only. It powers on, all keys and presets are working, some knobs don't do anything. Almost every knob, slider and preset knob is crackling. A few knobs are not original and three knobs are loose. We don't have the lid of the case. Optical it's in used condition with a few scratches, some wear and tear and the keys are partly worn (see photo's). It's a 220V version and the serial number is: 770434."

【DEMO】YAMAHA Dream Synthesizer

The Yamaha EX5 and EX5r rack came close only missing the Formant component of the FS1R.

"AWM is Yamaha's original system for effectively using sampled waveforms in synthesizers and tone generators. The strength of AWM synthesis lies not only in its extraordinary ability to "shape" and control the sound of the samples with a comprehensive system of envelope generators, filters, key scaling parameters, modulation, and more. AWM voices can have from 1 to 4 AWM elements. Each AWM element can use a preset wave or a sampled waveform. The ability to combine AWM elements means that you can, for example, combine separate samples for the attack and sustain portions of an instrument's sound, with independent control over each.

Yamaha AN Synthesis (Analog Physical Modeling) offers all the benefits of traditional analog synthesis with the stability, reproducability, and precise control of digital technology. It is capable of accurately reproducing the sound of classic analog synthesizers without patch cables, setting charts, or the frustrating instability that was the bane of the analog age. A standard (Poly) AN voice can have 1 AN element and from 1 to 3 AWM elements. Classic analog synth type sounds can be created with the single AN element alone. AWM elements can be added as necessary to "modernize" the sound.

FDSP adds a sophisticated note-dependent effect processor to the basic AWM synthesis system. In contrast to a stand effect stage, the FDSP synthesis stage uses individual note and velocity data to control effect parameters, thus making it possible to simulate the characteristics of a number of real-world musical components, as well as produce totally new effects. FDSP can produce totally new sounds that are responsive and "alive". FDSP voices have from 1 to 4 AWM elements with an FDSP stage between the elements and the main effect stage. The FDSP stage can be applied to any or all of the AWM elements used, as required.

Yamaha's Virtual Acoustic ("VL") Synthesis tone generation system applies sophisticated computer based "physical modeling" technology to musical sound synthesis, accurately simulating the very complex vibrations, resonances, reflections and other acoustic phenomena that occur in a real wind or string instrument. VL voices can have 1 VL element and from 1 to 3 AWM elements. The VL element can be used alone to emphasize the full realism and expressive power of the VL tone generator, or with added AWM elements for thicker textures.

The EX5 allows the AN and FDSP tone generator systems to be combined in "AN + FDSP" voices which can have 1 AN element and from 1 to 3 FDSP elements. The FDSP stage can be applied to any or all of the AWM elements used, as required."

The EX5 also features sophisticated sampling capability. Samples can be used in AWM voice elements or mapped to and played via individual keys of the keyboard using the Key Map mode. It is also possible to sample internal sounds created in the EX5. The Sample mode has all the features you'd expect from a professional sampler and is compatible with WAV, AIFF and AKAI formats. Sampled waveforms can be saved to floppy disk or to an external storage device via the optional ASIB1 SCSI Interface.

The features don't stop there. Six Controller Knobs can be assigned to a wide range of parameters for extraordinary real-time control capability along with the Pitch wheel, two Mod wheels, assignable Ribbon Controller and Scene memory buttons. Two types of full featured built-in Sequencers are on-board. A 16-Track Song Sequencer has real-time play effects and "groove" quantization. An 8-Track Pattern Sequencer has most of the functions and features of the 16-track song sequencer, but is more suited to the production of drum tracks, dance grooves, or other frequently used phrases. There's also a great 4-track Arpeggiator with 50 preset and user patterns.

Top-quality digital effects processors of two types are onboard. The "System" effects includes two separate effect units: Reverb and Chorus. Independent reverb and chorus settings can be made for each voice in the Voice mode, and for each performance setup in the Performance mode. Two "Insertion" effects provide up to 79 additional effects like chorus, distortion and overdrive, amp simulation, auto wah, equalization, delay, reverb, and other effects.

Use the 16-part Performance mode to create elaborate sequences, layer sounds and so on. Different parts can be assigned to different areas of the keyboard, there are up to 16 zones. The EX Key Map mode allows you to assign individual samples, patterns, or pattern tracks to different keys of the keyboard. These can then be played or triggered from the keyboard or an external sequencer or other MIDI controller. Every knob and controller on the keyboard sends and receives MIDI data in real-time."

"My first piece exploring my new drum machine. I'm actually enjoying the limitations, like not being able to trigger my patterns by computer. There's a funny thing that happens with one of the delays on the TR-8, some controlled feedback. Anyhow, that gave me title. Chords in the background are from my Pulse 2."
