"I Dream Of Wires" Moogfest Theatrical Premiere Promo Video

Published on Apr 18, 2014 I Dream of Wires·13 videos

"I Dream Of Wires' premiere screening is at Moogfest on April 26, with a 2nd Moogfest screening April 27!

I Dream Of Wires is an independent documentary about the history, demise and resurgence of the modular synthesizer, featuring interviews with over 100 modular musicians, inventors and enthusiasts, including Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Gary Numan, Vince Clarke (Erasure), Morton Subotnick, Chris Carter (Throbbing Gristle), Daniel Miller, Carl Craig, Flood, Cevin Key (Skinny Puppy), James Holden, Factory Floor, Legowelt, Clark, John Foxx and Bernie Krause, as well as manufacturers and modular industry leaders Doepfer, Modcan, and Make Noise.

Although April 26 will be the world premiere of I Dream Of Wires' 96 minute theatrical cut (at Moogfest), a 4-hour Special Edition cut of the film, I Dream Of Wires: Hardcore Edition, was released on DVD and BluRay in late-2013, and has already become an underground, grassroots sensation amongst electronic musicians and fans, with high profile reviews and coverage from the likes of NPR, Arte/Tracks, Pitchfork, The Wire, and FACTmag. Despite it's imposing 4-hour length and ultra-niche target market, the Hardcore Edition ("for the hardcore modular synth and electronic music fanatics") has proven an independent hit. Now, stripped of the Hardcore Edition's techy excesses, I Dream Of Wires' theatrical cut is set to bring the fascinating story of the modular synthesizer, a story driven by passionate and innovative people, to the masses. Additional screenings are being confirmed, with Chicago's CIMMfest and Boston's Together Festival on deck for theatrical stops for the film.

I Dream of Wires begins with an historical primer, exploring the early development of modular synthesizers from pioneering companies Moog Music Inc. and Buchla and Associates, right through to the near-extinction of these instruments, brought on by the introduction of portable, digital synthesizers in the '80s. From there, the rebirth of the modular synthesizer is retraced, leading into the phenomenal resurgence of the modular synthesizer. Along the way is some in-depth exploration of the passions, obsessions and dreams of people who have dedicated part of their lives to this esoteric electronic music machine. What started out as a "vintage-revival scene" in the '90s has grown into an underground phenomena with a growing market of modular obsessives craving ever more wild and innovative sounds and interfaces. Today, the modular synthesizer is no longer an esoteric curiosity or even a mere music instrument — it is an essential tool for radical new sounds and a bona fide subculture.

Percuss New Wireless AudioCubes firmware and MIDIBridge in the Works

via the Percussa newsletter:

"First of all, thanks being on this list and for supporting Percussa and my work with AudioCubes and for reading the newsletter!

I've been silent for quite a while, posting a bit less than usually, both on the newsletter and the blog. This is because I've been working hard on a new update to the AudioCubes firmware, as well as a new version of MIDIBridge :-)

Why a new version of the firmware and MIDIBridge?
If you've used MIDIBridge, the main application to generate MIDI information using AudioCubes, or if you've read the manuals, you already know that there are three modes you can put the cubes in: SENDER, RECEIVER (used for sending MIDI note on/off triggers when cubes detect each other), and SENSOR (used for sending MIDI continuous controllers based on distance between cubes or hands and cubes).

With the current version of MIDIBridge and the firmware, you don't have this cube detection + distance information at the same time. I'm working on a new update to change all that, and to make distance information and cube detection available simultaneously, in the form of a new cube mode in MIDIBridge, called TOPOLOGY.

This will bring what you can do with the AudioCubes to a whole new level! Imagine the AudioCubes as a synthesizer where signals can be patched and modulation depth changed simply by creating a network of cubes and changing their relative distances, or imagine sending MIDI triggers and controllers at the same time, the possibilities are enndless. These new capabilities will give rise to new, improved and updated AudioCubes software :-)"

via Michael McRoberts on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge:

"This was probably my first real serious piece with the Moog. It was recorded on my stereo reel-to-reel tape recorder, bouncing back and forth between the left and right channels. That's a very primitive way to make a multitrack recording."

"This is a MFOS Noise Toaster analog synthesizer built/modified by New Voodoo Design as a prototype/example model for a customer who wanted a series of MFOS synthesizers in panels that would fit in a Eurorack rack. This one could be put into any rack that would fit that size panel (bit more than 5" in height) or in an enclosure/box of almost any type (hammond, radio shack, etc) or left as it is.
Has the Guitar (1/4") In mod, but this does NOT mean this is a 'guitar synth'-that mod merely allows an audio in to the VCF.
There is also another mod to allow voltage in to control the VCO
Other notable things:
Wide Range VCO
White Noise Generator
LED freq indicator
low Pass Filter
VCA
AR Generator with Repeat or Manual Pushbutton
LFO with Square, Integrated Square and Differentiated Square waves
Nicely Normalized Switching Scheme
PCB Has Pads for Interface to Other DIY Projects.
Uses one 9V Battery (portable)
Low Current Design Extends Battery Life
Makes a plethora of plethoras of cool and interesting sounds
That's pretty much it. Quality design, very cool analog synth sounds can be had from this."

audiowerkstatte midi-restarter & midi-clock-divider

"The midi-restarter helps you to start or stop your MIDI-slave independent of your MIDI-master, but alway in perfect synchronisation.

You push the buttom and the audiowerkstatt midi-restarter sends a MIDI-start/stop-message at the beginning of the next bar to ensure that all following MIDI-devices run in the correct timing.

There are 3 modes of operation:
1. At the beginning of the next bar, a MIDI-stop-message and immediately after that a MIDI-start-message is sent. In this mode, a standing sequencer is restarted and a running sequencer is "pushed" into the correct timing. This mode does not work with all MIDI-devices as some devices require a short break between MIDI-stop- and MIDI-start-message. For these devices, the second mode can be selected.

2. A short time before the next bar starts (one MIDI-clock-message=1/24 quarter-note), a MIDI-stop-message is sent and then at the next bar a MIDI-start-message is sent. In this mode, a standing sequencer is restarted and a running sequencer is - after a very short break - "pushed" to the correct timing. This mode corresponds to the first and is intended for MIDI-devices that require a short break between MIDI-start- and MIDI-stop-message.

3. If the sequencer is running, a MIDI-stop-message is sent at the next bar and if the sequencer is standing, a MIDI-start-message is sent at the next bar. In this mode, a standing sequencer is restarted and running sequencer is stopped at the next bar.

It can be switched between the time-signatures 4/4 and 3/4.

You can also set whether only the newly created MIDI-clock and the MMC commands (start, stop, continue) are sent or the midi-data, received at the MIDI-in, will be mixed with that."

"The audiowerkstatt midi-clock-divider is a clock-divider for the MIDI-clock.

The audiowerkstatt midi-clock-divider divides the MIDI-clock of the MIDI-master, whereby the MIDI-slave runs correspondingly slower. The division-ratios are 1/1, 1/2, 1/3, ..., 1/8, 1/9.

If the division-factor 1/1 is selected, the MIDI-clock is simply passed through. With the division-factor of 1/2 the MIDI-slave runs at half the speed. So 16ths-notes will be 8th-notes and the loop is twice as long.

Very useful to double the loop length of the MIDI-slave (eg MIDI-sequencer or [audio-]looper). When using the division-factor 1/8 and an originally one bar long loop runs over 8 bars.

And good for experimental musicians, especially if an odd division-factor is selected and MIDI-master and slave seem to be not in sync, but from time to time come together in perfect sync.

You can also set whether only the newly created MIDI-clock and mmc commands (start, stop, continue) are sent or the, at the MIDI-in incoming data, will be mixed with that."

Note this is the first audiowerkstatte post on MATRIXSYNTH.

The rest of the piece is played and mixed live to 2 track. I have 2 Nano Kontrols, one is for the Octatrack levels and rate for each track and the other is controlling a Big Sky reverb patch. The live OP1 is going 1st into the Red Panda Particle - Big Sky Reverb - Cocoquantus. So many experiments to do with this setup it boggles my mind.
