Demo of the OBMx

Published on Apr 23, 2014 Lackan110f·12 videos

"A demo song with just the OBMx multi tracked. It is really a great synthesizer, and anyone saying you can't get it to sound good just don't know how to use it.

Just using the knobs is using only half the synth. In the Matrix you really can spice up the sound for extra deep filter sweeps or controlling when different filters should come in.

It has bee accused of sounding digital, and when adding all filters on top of each other you quite can get that digital sound to it. But when only using the 24 dB filter it sounds just as analog as it really is."

Cool render.

Madrona Labs Newsletter: Software plans, Soundplane ordering

"Hello from the Labs! I'm writing with a quick update on the upcoming run of Soundplanes and my other near-term plans.

Software plans

First of all, thank you for the great response to the 1.0 release of Kaivo. This project was a very demanding one technically, and I’m happy that people are hearing the same things in Kaivo’s granulator and models that make them so exciting to me. Thanks to everyone for your support and for all the notes of feedback and encouragement.

Kaivo’s models will always require a lot of CPU power to run. To some extent that is just part of the price to pay for using true FDTD (finite-difference time-domain) models. As with Aalto though, Kaivo will see many improvements from version to version, including optimizations to lessen the CPU load. I just posted a short article to the web site about getting the most out of Kaivo now, and what to expect from future releases. A 1.1 release of Kaivo is coming within a week, with a few much-requested usability changes. The major optimizations will take more testing and are farther down the road: please see the article for more info.

In addition to the Kaivo 1.1 update, I'm giving Aalto and the Soundplane client some love for a release by the first week in May. This will fix some usability issues that were found while my focus was 100% on getting Kaivo out. Thanks for your patience.

Soundplane ordering

We are gearing up for another run of Soundplanes. Having done inventory in the shop [*] and contacting our suppliers, we are almost ready to go. So I'm now announcing that we will be taking orders on Thursday, May 1. The next run of instruments will be $1,895 as before. Prepayment is required to reserve an instrument. Production will begin when enough instruments are sold to fund the production run, and is scheduled to take 8-10 weeks. So, assuming the run sells out in two to three weeks, we expect to begin shipping finished instruments by early August. Please see http://madronalabs.com/hardware for more details.

This run of Soundplanes will be substantially like the previous one, with a few minor mechanical changes for stability and playability. I am moving to cherry wood rather than alder for this run. Over the previous runs I had to reject a number of cases that had improper dimensions, and I have traced these issues to wood moisture changes. The short story is, it's just hard to get alder in the quality required for making these instruments. Cherry on the other hand also comes from managed forests in the USA, mills like a dream, should be more stable, and I think it will look great with the walnut playing surface.

Soundplanes have been really getting out and about in the world lately! From the code bending demos of Chris Novello, to the studio work of Amon Tobin and MGMT, to the spectacle of Nine Inch Nails’ live show, more artists are using Soundplanes to take their work somehere new. And as we continue to add capabilities to the Soundplane software, I think it's going to be an exciting year.

[*] Protip: if she'll spend a day of her time with you counting specks of silicon with names like GRM188F11C104ZA01D, she's a keeper. Thanks to the lovely and patient Ms. Chaya Jones!"

ADDAC209 VC Compensated Glide Videos

ADDAC209 VC Compensated Glide - Part 1 from ADDAC System on Vimeo.

"This is our take on a glide/slew circuit, it introduces a time compensation for the glide/slew rate so that any interval have the same glide time.
Normal glides have a fixed speed, they take X time to go up a semitone and X*12 to go up an octave, we thought of adding a compensation circuit to detect and dynamically change the speed according to the distance needed to be made, so that in the end it'll take the same time to reach the final destination no matter if the interval is 1 semitone or a X number octaves. This compensation feature (dry/wet) can controlled by the front panel knob or by CV.

Features:
VC Glide time
VC Compensation (dry/wet)
On/Off switch

Completely analog circuitry.

"We have spent time researching this model, confirming via Moog Music Inc paperwork from 1981/82 (see scans below) that Moog did indeed offer three factory colors of the Liberation.

To confirm, to the best of out knowledge, that it is a factory original Red edition, the synth was disassembled completely to confirm that the red paintwork was consistent throughout the entire unit. The original laquered finish, with age related crazing, also looks consistent and authentic. The only photo we have been able to find with a similar Red unit is attached below."

Anyone know who that is? Alan Thicke in the background. Moog letter further below.

Update: via Adam on Facebook, it looks like it's Robin Sparkles. Video added above.

Update2: You can also see one in this Nickleodeon video. Curious if it's the same one and studio prop.

Octave Cat SRM-II Vintage Analog Synthesizer SN G1064 with Custom Knobs

Love the look of the custom knobs on this one. Kind of reminds of the Crumar Spirit.

"This is an Octave CAT SRM-II, recently fully refurbished by Boomer at Future music in Los Angeles, with guidance from one of the original Octave designers himself. Previously, it was serviced and calibrated by synth technician and collector Kevin Lightner (synthfool.com). The SRM-II is the last and most advanced model in the CAT series. Other sellers are offering lesser models (Kitten, Pre-SRM Cat) for considerably more money. This is probably the best SRM-II you will find on the west coast. Cosmetically and functionally clean. All modulation routings working.

2 VCO's, 1 VCF, FM, S&H, Noise, Sub-Osc, Mono and Dual Poly modes, ADSR and AR, and lots of modulating routings. Fatness."

"Up for sale here is my Arp Odyssey mkII 2810. It does need some work. Vco 1 seems fine but vco2 needs work. I think the filter and s&h and possible the env might need a little work as well. I am selling this as is. I was quoted between 500-700 for a full restore. If you know how to fix synths this will be a great deal. This is one of the more sought after models of Arps. I'm not positive if it has the moog copy filter or not. Someone told me it did but reading online it seems the ones without the cv jacks had it."

It features a new live played track called MONOFUNKALIZE with assistance from a very polyfunky sequenced Volca Keys. The Keys audio is going through the Monotribe filter, so the sound of the Volca Keys is only audible when notes are being played on the MT25d
