Buchla 262v meets NLC 8-bit cipher

Published on Apr 24, 2014 DJjondent·215 videos

Right channel comes in around :17.

"The NonLinearCircuits Cipher is a set of clocked shifted registers.
Very much like a ASR (Analog Shift Register).

The first CV out provides pitch CV for the 262v.
CV outs 2,3,4 modulate harmonic scan & tilt

The operation of a cipher usually depends on a piece of auxiliary information, called a key. It's used a lot in encryption.This aux info is encoded to produce a new rhythm.

The 8-bit requires a clock and 1-2 Aux signals. This can be anything crossing 1V. I'm using CV from Adam's excellent mini 112 retro touch sequencer.(The video doesn't show this, but I'll upload pics to my blog soon).

Siel DK600 + Expander Synthesizer Demo

"Bob Weigel of http://www.sounddoctorin.com demonstrates an assortment of layered sounds from the two 6 voice "DCO" analog units. (Actual 2 analog oscillators each that drive a divide down network to create digital waveforms that are assigned to 6 analog synth channels as needed. An op amp saw converter produces the sawtooth waveform and PWM with comparator as is common. These synths have 3 LFO's but two are for one DCO each and are tied to the same set of controls. Added warmth. Really great pad and clav sounds and some brass."

PhonoPaper Camera Scanning Synth for iOS Now Available and Free

And the best part is it's currently free. What's interesting is it will work using the camera on anything. I thought the app would only read between the horizontal bar lines in the paper images you see to the left, but I just tried it on anything and it worked! You just have to set it to free mode. Great app to trip people out. Would also be interesting to use it to capture a visual what your playing on your modular or other and then feed that audio back in for processing. Or just have it watch TV and feed the audio back into your modular or mix. Should make for some interesting performances. I'm surprised it's is free as I can see it going viral with non synth people picking it up for a buck just to show it to people. Grab it while you can.

iTunes: PhonoPaper - Alexander Zolotov

You might remember the video posted here for the Android version (also available).

"PhonoPaper is:
• format of graphical representation of the sound (music, human voice, etc.); in other words, it is the 2D audio barcode (by analogy with the QR-code);
• real-time PhonoPaper-code reader (using the camera);
• PhonoPaper-code generator (sound to image converter).

Key features:
• PhonoPaper-code is analogue, so it is not so sensitive to different types of the image distortion (bad camera, dark picture, wrinkled paper, etc.); at least you will hear the "silhouette" of the original sound;
• PhonoPaper does not require access to the network; its code is self-contained;
• PhonoPaper-code can be played in real-time with hand-controlled speed and direction;
• PhonoPaper-code can be drawn by hand (paper version of the Virtual ANS synth);
• PhonoPaper is free!

Examples of usage:
• voice messages (or pieces of music) on the billboards, posters, postcards, goods;
• audio labels for phonorecords;
• audio examples in some textbooks;
• art-experiments;
• learning the basics of the spectral music.

PhonoPaper is based on the Virtual ANS engine - it is a software simulator of the unique Russian synthesizer ANS. So if you want to make more complex PhonoPaper-codes - use the Virtual ANS.

Default PhonoPaper-code length is 10 seconds. But you can make it shorted or longer - playing speed can be changed manually.

Official website with examples and FAQ: http://warmplace.ru/soft/phonopaper

Siel DK600 tech talk; a tough nut to crack

Published on Apr 24, 2014 sounddoctorin·188 videos

"Bob Weigel of http://www.sounddoctorin.com gives a tech overview of The Siel DK600 aka Opera 6 aka Kiwi. This synth has some fantastic attributes if you can get one working reliably. I've found some problems besides the common battery spill which just requires a lot of socket/chip changing, trace repair and cleanup usually. The voltage on 5V supply can drift too low and particularly hitting notes hard the s+h cells for key voltage will bleed back onto the power supply through the analog switch 4051's. This creates a phantom lfo strangeness when you hit keys hard. Anyway you may find yourself in a labor of love on these and hopefully this video helps some people. Always check the website for more tech tips, parts etc.

The architecture is somewhat similar to the polymoog except with only 6 voices instead of fully polyphonic in that it uses analog VCO's driving a divide down network. In the Polymoog the frequencies are hard wired of course like an organ but in the siel they are assigned to synth channels by the computer like any polysynth. Watch the demo video showing more of the sounds layered with the Expander module! (A Dk600 with only volume and tune knobs that are analog controls for the vco's)"

AnttiPussinen : OverUnder - Analog Synthesizer Based Sculpture

AnttiPussinen : OverUnder from Antti Pussinen on Vimeo.

If you are in Berlin, Germany, the work is possible to see till 26.4. in Suomesta Galleria.

"OverUnder by Antti Pussinen is an analog synthesizer based sound sculpture, that creates infrasonic sound waves around approximately 16Hz. Over tones of base frequency are created by folding original waveform into itself.

Since most of the frequencies in the artwork are below hearing range (and below the range of my recorder), a sense of pressure is missing from the video. The low frequencies one can hear are a product of sound reflections inside the gallery room.

Analog sound synthesis based sound works are like sculptures. In a sound synthesis circuit, electricity is forced to form abstract waveforms in electric current. A speaker transforms these electric waveforms into waves in air
pressure. Since no data is lost in digital to analog and analog to digital conversions, a viewer can feel and hear the original sculpted waveform in full detail.

The power of digital revolution is based on evaluating what is relevant information, and filtering out the rest (for example outside of hearing range in digital audio). With this development we are maybe losing some feeling or content that is seen irrelevant, but is still there.

2014, 160 x 90 x 90 cm, Infrasonic subwoofer, speakers, analog synthesizer circuitry, other electronics.

Shown in Suomesta Galleria, Berlin, together with paintings from Mimmo Catania.

via the seller: "I believe in being upfront about the condition of gear so..... Let's start with the bad stuff: This Arp 2600 has several issues. Do not consider this as new showroom condition. The left speaker does not work. The tolex covering the case was removed and the wood case has been painted black The front of the wood case was modified to hold a (vintage) Mu-Tron envelope filter. The filter has been disconnected, there are no electrical issues from it having been installed and removed. I will include the filter, I have no idea if it works. The back of the wood case is missing (see photos). Numerous slider shafts are broken but the sliders still work. Missing slider caps. Some of the faders are scratchy Some of the screws are replacements on the front panel. The power connector has been replaced. Most of the electrolytic and tantalum capacitors have been replaced in the VCA, EG and outputs sections as well as the power supply. (this is actually a good thing). The good stuff: All 3 oscillators work and sound great. The filter works and sounds great. Envelopes work. The VCA has been replaced with an exact replica. It now functions perfectly. S+H, noise, slew, reverb all work. It really does sound great. No keyboard is included. This arp appears pretty rough but it sounds great. Please note all the cosmetic issues. Look closely at the photos. Ask questions. No returns accepted, so if you have concerns or certain requirements ask before bidding. Buying this arp or placing a bid means you accept any and all of its imperfections and awesomeness."

"The unit appears to be working reasonably well, but an issue I noticed is that VCO2 seems like its only making small output level compared to VCO1. I'm pretty sure it was fine when I first tested, but when I tried playing again after a couple of days, the VCO2 level was becoming a lot smaller somehow and I'm not sure what caused this. The sound changes when you change settings on VCO2, VCA2 and VCF2 knobs, so I guess it could possibly be some simple servicing or adjustment needed for the VCO2 output.

Otherwise, all the keys and knobs and sliders appear to be working fine as I tested accordingly to the owner's manual. The Sequencer section was fine too."

Otherwise, all the switches and sliders appear to be functioning fine as I tested. There is a bit of noise on the sliders, which should do with some servicing/adjustment as well."

Make Noise STO doing steel drums (kinda)

"Was trying to patch something very different when I started this. I was going for a gentle noise modulated filter fm. When it didn't work I ended up running through different filter FM sources and ended up with this. The braids is in RING mode and is going to the ripples FM input. The sub and shaped STO outputs are going to ripples with the A4 providing a slow lfo to the linear fm for some pitch wobble. The A4 is also providing an envelope for the ripples VCA with a slow attack. Octatrack is arping the STO. Apart from the drums and the bass everything else is the sto. the sound under the bass at the beginning is actually the STO's delay feedback form a previous attempt. It sounded good so I kept it. And lfo is modulating the delay and delay to reverb sends in the A4."

Arturia Announces Availability of Breakthrough BeatStep Sequencer/Controller

"“I’ve fallen in love with a new little toy — the BeatStep. So simple and yet so effective. I hate complicated technology and the BeatStep is as simple as one could wish for. Plus it has the benefit of great sequencing and control possibilities, including CV/Gate connectivity, so I can get my old synths down from the attic and back into the studio!”

- Oliver Huntemann, 2014 (electronic music producer and internationally-touring DJ)

GRENOBLE, FRANCE: having set pulses rhythmically racing when launched to critical acclaim at the 2014 NAMM Show in Anaheim, California, music software and hardware company Arturia is proud to announce availability of BeatStep — a space-saving portable pad controller-cum-step sequencer that breaks price to performance ratios without breaking the bank — as of April 24...

Chameleon-like in its many control options, BeatStep is designed to work with DAWs, loop triggering software, VST instruments or effects, MIDI hardware, or even CV/Gate-equipped analogue instruments like Arturia’s own award-winning MiniBrute Analog Synthesizer or other manufacturers’ models — vintage classics or more modern contemporaries alike. Try triggering audio clips within powerful, flexible software environments such as Ableton Live or playing drum parts in conjunction with the likes of FXpansion BFD or Toontrack EZdrummer... it’s as easy as exercising your trigger fingers!

When working in CONTRL (MIDI controller mode) users can comfortably use BeatStep’s 16 sensibly-spaced, ultra-sensitive (velocity- and pressure-sensitive) pads to create dynamic percussion performances. Pads are brightly backlit with red LEDs, lending a helping hand with overcoming far from ideal lighting conditions that are typically associated with onstage operation and also assisting with making studio-based beat-making an equally easy on the eye experience.

Easily switch to SEQ (step sequencer mode) and those LEDs light the way still, but backlit in blue to reflect the mode change. Cool colour change notwithstanding, the pads themselves now perform a different function with each one representing a single step in a 16-step sequence — simply pressing a pad enables or disables the current sequence step — while adjusting the encoders provides pitch information. Creating and changing patterns on the fly is equally easy: repeatedly press (pads) and turn (encoders) to your musical heart’s content. Couldn’t be simpler, surely? Save up to 16 sequence patterns for instant recall — an added bonus when it comes to both performance and recording.

Even better, both modes are available simultaneously, so it’s perfectly feasible, for instance, to step sequence a MiniBrute (courtesy of BeatStep’s built-in Gate Out and CV Out connections), keep that sequence running, then switch to CONTRL mode and use the pads to launch clips in Ableton Live while using the encoders to manipulate Arturia’s latest SEM V soft synth (running on a computer connected via USB). All in sync. All at the same time. Or any combination of devices that well-connected BeatStep users can come up with when making the most of its Gate Out, CV Out, MIDI, and USB connectivity. Controlling the MMC transports in Apple Logic is as simple as letting BeatStep do the talking (using its transport buttons); bring an Apple iPad and Camera Connection Kit combo along for the musical ride and BeatStep becomes one of the most flexible iOS controllers around — all the more so when working with Arturia’s award-winning apps like iMini and iSEM; add Arturia’s MIDI Control Center utility software into the musical mix and a wide range of MIDI commands can be assigned to BeatStep’s pads and encoders. Almost anything is possible.

Put simply, never has step sequencing and MIDI control been so flexible, fun, and affordable for so many! To witness a BeatStep in action is to truly want one — which is exactly why Arturia has seen fit to include a Kensington Lock to keep it secure from prying eyes (and hands)! However, you can walk away with one from your local authorised Arturia dealer today for only $99.00 EUR/€129.00 USD (MSRP).
