"A Sad Day for Sound" - Tribute to Hollow Sun's Steve Howell by Richard London

via Richard Londonsoundlab on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge

Featuring: "the shell, the novachord, newtron bomb 3 (the mellotron), and i think some cathotron"

"(C) Richard London, 2014

Remembering Steve Howell of Hollow Sun, a sound connoisseur's sound designer. In the modern world, where we can have any sound imaginable at our fingers, few sound designers stand out. My music changed when I discovered the world of quality virtual instruments. One of my first experiences was with Hollow Sun. Thank you Steve for doing the impossible and putting a Novachord at my fingertips.

Steve Howell's sound design has inspired me countless times, and though I never knew him, I will sincerely miss receiving news in my inbox from him with the latest treasures from Hollow Sun."

This year, we worked on the theme : Art and Technics and decided instead of a demonstrative approach to express how various techniques of music, video, and performing arts can be a path towards beauty. I hope we succeeded but I am not the right person to have an opinion about this since I am involved in this performance.

Vintage Maas-Rowe G-123 Grand Symphonic Carillon Electronic Keyboard

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This extremely rare Maas-Rowe Symphonic Carillon is in excellent functional (manual playing only) and cosmetic condition. This electromechanical rarity plays up to 123 chimes of four different kinds using a keyboard interface. It can either play Flemish Bells, Westminster Bells, or the Symphonic Carillon bells, the latter of which is comprised of both minor-third-tuned bells ("Minor Bells") or major-third-tuned bells ("Major Bells"). For the Symphonic Carillon bells, it uses relay that allows the player to choose the key in which he will be playing by pressing the corresponding button for that key, which in turn selects an appropriate set of minor-third-tuned bells and a set of major-third-tuned bells. Being able to select which bells are tuned minor or major allows for much greater melodic and harmonic possibilities.

This carillon was purchased from Otero Junior College, Colorado. This particular symphonic carillon cost the college $28,000 when it was installed new in the college by Maas-Rowe in the early 1960s, which equates to over $200,000 in today's dollars. Receipts and other documentation will be provided to the buyer.

An external speaker that can be used in conjunction with its current monitor speaker. If you plan to mount this in a church and amplifiy it through a bell tower, 4 large tower speakers/horns can be provided to a buyer at an additional cost of $250/each, plus shipping. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own one of the most extensive (and expensive!!!) carillon systems that Maas-Rowe ever built.

Chime bell types include:
37 Major bells (which, when combined with minor bells, comprises the Symphonic Carillon)
49 Minor bells (which, when combined with major bells, comprises the Symphonic Carillon)
37 Flemish bells
11 Westminster chimes

One of the two large wood-paneled cabinets is the amplification section, which includes five power amplifiers. One of these power amplifiers is for powering a monitor speaker, and four of them are for powering tower speaker horns in a church belfry, facing in four separate directions. The Hammond speaker shown on the right is not original to this carillon. The other of the two large wood-paneled cabinets houses Maas-Rowe Chronobell system, which is the timing and roll-playing system. The Westminster chimes have their own cabinet. The Flemish chimes have their own cabinet as well. The minor bells and major bells are all housed in the carillon console itself.

If you want this instrument for recording studio use rather than for church use, the footprint of this instrument can be reduced by 75% for more compact use, so that it takes up only the same amount of space as a Hammond organ. If you put a preamplifier/amplifier at the bottom of the keyboard console, you wouldn't need the electronics in the two tall cabinets, and you wouldn't need the Westminster chimes, as they are controlled by the clock cabinet only. Also, if DI the instrument-level signal directly from the keyboard console's Symphonic Carillon bells and from the Flemish Bells cabinet to an external preamplifier, you wouldn't need the Hammond speaker. Then, if you stick the flemish cabinet behind the console, the amount of floor and wall space that this would take up would be the same as that of a Hammond C3 organ.

Also included are 15 mylar player rolls. Please note that we have bypassed it (it was working before we bypassed it) several years ago, so we do not guarantee the functionality of the automatic player system...only the manual-playing system is guaranteed to be fully functional. There are about 8-12 songs on each roll, thereby providing 120-180 songs total. This also comes with three copies of the on-off switch key for the carillon console, as well as four copies of the key needed to open and close the two cabinet doors.

Due to the size of this carillon, it will need to be shipped freight, for which the rate varies depending on the buyer's location. Please contact me get a specific shipping quote to your location. The $500 is just an estimate; the buyer will be responsible for the actual shipping cost."

Newton 09 Retro Sci-Fi Sound Art Radio Theatre Production

Newton 09, Dance Dance Beat: for the World to Remember

Published on May 31, 2014

The final track from Episode 2 of Newton 09, composed entirely with a 1986 Commodore 64c computer (& processing). Software used for the piece was the C64 MSSIAH monosynth, bassline, and wave player.

Newton 09 is currently in post-production, and the full three part saga will be available at the end of this Summer.

-------------------

Newton 09 is a retro sci-fi sound art radio theatre production, in 5.1 multichannel (and stereo). Story by Daniel Nadeau, foley and electronic composition by Peter van Haaften and an accompanying graphic adaptation by illustrator Robin Clugston combine to create a new trans-disciplinary work, inspired by classic British broadcasting.

Presented in three acts, Newton 09 chronicles the re-emergence of a lost art after generations of silence. 300 years in the future, mental slavery has buried the memory of joyful activity. In a house, on a hill, a lonely electronic mind has been waiting to remind the world of its forgotten beat.

With live voice acting, a progressive electronic score, and original atmospherics, Newton 09 looks to make an immersive electroacoustic experience accessible to new audiences. The piece takes ideas from the past, present and future--patching them into a surreal sound odyssey for all ages."

"My friends at KFJC 89.7 FM Foothill College, in Los Altos CA, invited me to perform live as part of a four hour special featuring my music. Because this station is special to me (it's where I performed my first live event ever, in 1980) and because they celebrate experimental music, I wanted to play an improvised concert as much as possible. Some of this gear appears for the first time in my live rig. This means that I make mistakes, and sometimes the notes aren't perfect. I like this because it's real, it's what I do. You can see a bit of my process, warts and all. (Some of the ideas here might surface on an upcoming album that I plan to call "Cosmology.") - Robert Rich"

Robert Rich is well known for his work on MOTM 5U format modulars. It's interesting to see him with the smaller eurorack format in this video.

WERSI BASS SYNTH Rare German Vintage Analog Synthesizer SN MS 36011077

via this auction

"Starting productin in 1977, this keyboard was advertised as two instruments in one: an Electric Bass Guitar and Synthesizer, this compact light-weight instrument from German organ builders WERSI was aimed at keyboard and organ players. The purpose was to give the organist/keyboardist some Bass Guitar and Synthesizer sounds they could incorporate into their performances. It is a monophonic analog synth with funky controls, great sound and a very unique character.

The Bass Guitar sound is actually very realistic, really capturing the sound of an electric bass guitar or acoustic bass. It has an attack control called "On" that lets you adjust the initial attack to make it sound like a picked bass or a fingered bass. A "Damp" control is essentially a sustain envelope that can be used to create more of a muted bass sound.

The Synthesizer section is pretty basic, and definitely designed using organ player lingo as opposed to synth player lingo. There are five flute stops (sine wave) from 16', 8', 4', 2', to 1', two brass stops (sawtooth) at 16' and 8' and a woodwind stop (square) at 8'. Multiple octave and waveforms can be mixed together to create more complex tones. These waveform sections, as well as the Bass Guitar section, have independent volume controls to balance their relative mix.

There is even a filter section—a formant filter referred to as "Wah-Wah"—that the brass (sawtooth) and woodwind (square) waveforms can be effected by in either automatic or manually adjusted modes using the "Wah-Wah" slider. There is no frequency cutoff or resonance knobs or anything like that, just an "On" switch, direction switch ("Up/Down"), a manual switch, and a "Rotor" (auto) switch. A simple envelope section is available with attack and sustain parameters.

A unique "Glide" slider can be used to pitch shift the keyboard by an entire octave. The octave shift can also be automated up or down at variable speed. A really interesting feature is the "Hawaii" button—an intermittent switch that drops the pitch by a half-tone. It is effectively like a pitch bend but only goes down and at a quick fixed rate. A Vibrato effect is available as well, with rate and depth controls and either continuous or delayed modes.

This instrument is in amazing condition, even without considering it's age. Believe me, this is a real find. (Uh-oh, I'm starting to regret putting it up for sale. I love this little keyboard!)"

GRENDEL DRONE COMMANDER

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"with a total of 9 knobs, the drone commander offers two manually-tuned oscillators and two lfos, plus an unusually colorful and nasty filter. lfo1 is an analog variable-shape oscillator, and lfo2 is a pulse waveform that auto-synchronizes to lfo1 at a ratio of 2x, 4x, 8x, or 16x. both lfos can be routed to the filter for rhythmic patterns. a line-level output jack is provided for connection to amplifiers or effects.

six of the drone commander’s nine knobs double as push-pull switches to control signal routing and waveform selection."

"Synthspa completed the following work on the synth:

1. PANEL BOARD REBUILD:
All faders rebuilt, all non-functioning buttons replaced.

2. MODULE BOARD REBUILD:
All six 80017a voice chips restored and guaranteed working, calibrated to factory standards, and small defects within the module board repaired.

3. POWER BOARD REBUILD:
Large electrolytic capacitors replaced and power jack converted to the standard 3 prong computer cable receptacle. Includes new 3-prong power cable.

4. CPU BOARD REBUILD:
A new battery and mounting chassis (originally they were soldered in) and all of your sounds archived.

5. KEYBED CONTACTS CLEANED

6. BENDER BOARD REBUILD:
Clean volume & portamento knobs, switch, sliders, and bender contacts.

In addition to this, Sythspa installed custom Cherry-Wood sides on the 106, which gives it an amazing vintage look somewhat similar to the Juno-60. I also had the lighted mod wheel installed by SynthSpa.

There is some cosmetic wear on the synth, as evidenced in the photos. Most wear is in the form of minor scratches, with the possibility of some tiny dents that are not noticeable to me. Note the rust spots between the LFO and DCO sections, as well as near the CHORUS section."
