FACT TV: Against The Clock - Luke Abbott

Published on Jun 18, 2014 FACTmagazine·299 videos

"Against the Clock is a series on FACT TV where we give an artist 10 minutes in the studio and see what they come up with.

Taking the challenge this week, Luke Abbott. After cutting his teeth on Trevor Jackson's Output label in the mid-'00s, Abbott found a home on James Holden's Border Community, sharing Holden's love of emotive, ecstatic dance music and releasing two albums on the label, Holkham Drones and Wysing Forest. Abbott also has one hell of a live set-up, as he demonstrated to FACT TV when touching down in London for a pair of recent live shows.

Filmed by Luis Muñoz and Pawel Ptak.

"The TR-909's clap featured one control the user could adjust: volume. That was not okay with us. I'm a huge fan of house music. I love the 909 clap. So this is a module I agonised over features I wanted it to have for a long time. And here it is. I hope you find it as useful as I do! ====Primary Features==== Just like the other Mutant Drums, the Clap is a highly versatile module. It is actually a voltage controlled LFSR noise oscillator as well as a powerful percussion synthesis engine! - feature-rich, analogue handclap percussion synthesis reminiscent of the 909 - pitch control of noise generator means you can create everything from vanilla 909 claps to broken, chiptune-like alien sounds - doubles as a voltage controlled, Commodore64-sounding noise VCO via the NOISE output and PITCH CV input - SUSTAIN control lets you crank up the clap's sustain and use the module as an abstract synth voice with external inputs! - external input allows you to synthesise claps from virtually any sound source you plug in - built in internal reverb effect derived from clap tone - reverb decay forms the decay of the clap sound, and is fully voltage controllable from short reverb "snaps" to long, whooshing tails! - you can select between internal and external noise sources as the source for the reverb sound generation, opening up really interesting sounds - DRIVE control lets you dial in anything from clean to extremely overdriven sounds - bandpass filter cutoff control"

STOLEN GEAR ALERT! BUCHLA MUSIC EASEL - SAN FRANCISCO

via Derek Gedalecia/Headboggle:

"STOLEN!!! SAN FRANCISCO - My brand-new Buchla Music Easel was snatched out of my apartment entryway sometime in the last few days. I live in the Tenderloin district, San Francisco.

Only the suitcase was taken so if anyone gets a wild offer on an incomplete 'like-new/used' Music Easel, please let me know. Closed up, it looks like a normalish suitcase. Some patches and non-standard shorting bars are inside but no A/C or extras

I am offering a reward for return or information. Please contact me by phone or computer, (also pictured by coincidence)
headboggle@gmail.com

Remember: When a door is a jar, it's opened! .. And insure your stuff, like i didn't."

Be sure to see the stolen channel below for more.

Update via Derek:

"The coop venue I last played (that I had checked with before at least twice) located my Easel in pretty much the same condition at coop annex across the Bay.

Apparently there are a lot of people at both organizations so thanks to the help of the synth community, a friend of a friend of a friend recognized the synth in an e-waste/recycling/junk
pile.

Nearly 2 months after it disappeared, the Easel is back in my hands... just going to move on, what a strange and mysterious turn.

Love goes out and back to everyone out there

Best,
Derek"

"The story i'm given is that the venue i played at (which i had already checked with) didn't have it.. but then they closed down for renovations and a bunch of their coop donations got moved to a sister coop.. a lot of people at play here... it ended up as a junked item across the bay essentially until someone in the know took a look, contacted someone who contacted someone else.. then i got word finally today, ... it's been on the lam since June 7th...

Anyway,.. all's well that ends well... insure your stuff! and spread the word when it goes missing cuz you never know what might happen"

Faxi Nadu's Modular Crash Course

"We will be using the Sonic Core Scope DSP Platform and Modular System for this course. You absolutely do not need to own the system, as the concepts shown are valid for any modular system. Of course, you will get an in-depth look at the Scope Modular, and get acquainted with this very nice system. In the last session we will have a brief look at other systems like the Nord Modular G2 and the analog Eurorack (via webcam). Agenda - Basic layout and workflow of Scope DSP System - Why modular? - Differences between modular system concepts - Basic layout and workflow of Scope Modular System - Modular components and signal chain. - Modular tricks and unique modules We will get in depth and build a variety of machines while explaining how and why things are done. Goals of the course: - That you will feel much more comfortable with synthesis in general, and be able to understand better what is going on behind the scenes of any synth. - Getting you going in using modular synthesis. - Providing you with concepts and tools to take your own modular ideas to the next level. - Getting you addicted :)"

Brian Eno's The Fat Lady of Limbourg for the Raspberry Pi

"Here's an updated version of Eno's favourite chubby girl, but rendered with a slimline synthesis model. All in an attempt to get this runnable on a single Raspberry Pi. This uses the non-oversampled synth, so everything is computed at 44.1kHz. It's using the newer variant of the BPCVO model, and I've redone all the synth presets to remove the filter on everything pitched to eliminate that particular computation burden. And there are tricks you can play to bring back a 'filtery' sound - for example, morphing from sin to saw or sin to square sounds like a filter opening up as harmonics get introduced, and that trick has been exploited to turn the pair of 'Brass' into pure 1980s digital filter-free synthesis. But despite the trick (early ramp via EG to morph from sin to saw, giving a harmonic enrichening over the first 100ms or so of the sound) you simply can't replace a filter with tricks, so the sounds do suffer as a result. But hey, no free lunches here, the goal was to make it burn less CPU and still get a decent sound. So the 'Fat Lady' bass has also gone filterless, ditto the Warm Jets 'guitar', ditto Phil's Wiggly Manzanera. The percussive elements remain filtered as they just have to be, they rely on the resonant filter to generate anything at all apart from hissy noise.

But after the filter removal and the performance tuning, this version now runs in exactly 24% of an iPad 2. It may actually run on a Pi in this form. Really, there is a damn good chance that £20 of woefully underpowered educational computer will be able to synthesize this in real time, without resorting to a Pocket Orchestra. Bear in mind, 'this' is now 14 notes of polyphony, many stereo delays (seven? eight??), a global reverb and 10 separate synths.

Audio was captured from the iPad and not processed in any way, these are exactly the bytes that I computed. Cool, eh? Plus, big bonus, you get the Eerie Noise - which is actually a combination of a dedicated 'Eerie Noise' synth and the pair of brasses, turned way down and pitch bent to buggery. Yay!

Next step - get this codebase rebuilt on a Pi and actually run it."

via the seller: "This was produced by Korg & was one of the last preset drum machines produced. It had 96 patterns plus fills. The sounds are all analogue & have a TR 808 sort of sound (if you never heard it before).

If you are a Depeche Mode fan then you will certainly have heard this on their early recordings, the snare & Hi Hat sounds being especially prominent.

I bought this unit back in the early 2000's & had it modified by Analogue Solutions to accept midi triggering (also has a Midi thru) & provide separate outputs for the most useful sounds."

Dividing Clocks: Gezeiten Ultima Ratio Eurorack Module

Published on Jun 18, 2014 instantknut·12 videos

"Playing along with my eurorack modular synthesizer and testing the Gezeiten Ultima Ratio clock divider module.
The track is entirely made with the modular with just the inevitable addition of reverb :)

The Ultima Ratio is used to provide 3 clock streams to synchronize the Grids drum sequencer and both Moskwa sequencers with different clock resolutions.

I play with the clock ratios in realtime and also make use of the makro attack/release envelope generator to provide control voltage to modulate the cutoff frequency of a dual Korgasmatron filter.

Make Noise Erbe-Verb Overview Video

Published on Jun 18, 2014 MAKEN0ISE·52 videos

"The Erbe-Verb is more than a collection of reverb algorithms or presets, it is a unique, modeless, continuously variable reverb algorithm with complete voltage control. Typical reverb types such as plate, room, hall, shimmer and others may be programmed by adjusting the knobs. The continuously variable algorithm allows for hybrid and unreal spaces to be found. Traveling between spaces is possible by modulating the algorithm or manually sweeping parameters. More than an end-of-chain effects unit, it's a whole new building block for modular synthesis. Like the Echophon, it's coded by Tom Erbe of soundhack.

Circuit Bent Casio VL-1 with 10 Mods

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This synth has undergone some SERIOUSLY complex circuit bending, and everything works great. The sounds that come out of it are nuts. You can get very, very heavy low bass that will shake your house via the pitch modulator. In total, there are 10 mods:

1. Rhythm Filter
2. Rhythm Squanker
3. Voice Filter 1
4. Voice Filter 2
5. Note Repeater
6. Squanker Hi/Lo
7. Voice Drive
8. Rhythm Drive I/II
9. Pitch Modulator
10. Rhythm/Melody Slider (rerouted)

The original synth itself has pretty complex capabilities, being able to record sequences into its memory and play them back. Between that and also the preset drum patterns, the types of sounds you can create are unlimited. There are 10 drum patterns which sound nuts with the mods, and the synth itself also sounds rockin (you have 6 different sounds possible for the synth)."

"Highest quality parts available - no compromises. Artfully hand wired in the 5U MOTM / MOOG Format.

scratches the surface of what the Klee is capable of

Modifications:

Custom LED Colors: This Klee been modified with Bi-Color LEDs so Stage LEDs 9-6 are green when the sequencer is in 2X8 mode. Blue LEDs on Random and Bus 2 Status. Yellow LEDs on Rate and Bus 1 Status. Green LED on Bus 3 Status. Red LED on Main Bus Status.

The Klee is the most feature packed, crazy, beautifully insane sequencer out there. Every option is implemented in this layout. Once you get one the Klee in your rack, you'll wonder how you managed without it. It can function like any other 16 step sequencer out there, or it can function like it has a brain of it's own. Easily programmed with your own ideas, or flip the Random Switch and find out what "it" has in mind. An endless source of inspiration.

This is one BIG build. Save yourself the time, hassle, and inevitable troubleshooting by purchasing this Klee fully and professionally assembled by Free State FX.

The Klee, pronounced Clay, is a shift register based sequencer. What makes the Klee different from most sequencers is that more than one Stage/Step can be active at any given time. Most sequencers have one active Stage, the CV for that Stage is programmed via the pot, and the CV is then sent to the CV Out. With the Klee, one or more stages can be active at one time, the CV programmed by the active Stages is added together, and is then sent to the CV Out..."
