Introducing String Studio VS-2

Published on Jun 17, 2014 Applied Acoustics Systems

"Thiago Pinheiro introduces AAS' string modeling synthesizer plug-in...

String Studio VS-2 -- String Modeling Synthesizer
https://www.applied-acoustics.com/str..."

"MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA: physical modelling plug-in specialist Applied Acoustics Systems (AAS) is proud to announce availability of String Studio VS-2 for Mac OS X (10.6 or later) and Windows (XP, Vista, 7, or 8) — an updated 64-bit (AAX-, AU-, and VST-compatible) version of its original String Studio VS-1 string modelling synthesizer plug-in released to critical acclaim almost a decade ago, dispensing with the traditional synthesizer audio pathway of oscillator, filter, and envelope elements in favour of real-life string instrument components — as of June 17...

String Studio VS-2 is so much more than a routine update of its predecessor, however. Here AAS has successfully streamlined the String Studio concept and brought it kicking and screaming to a whole new level — one that will forever change both listener and player’s perspective on strings. Who better, then, to introduce that streamlined String Studio concept than Applied Acoustics Systems President and Chief Executive Officer Marc-Pierre Verge: “Strings are the basis of so many musical instruments. They can be plucked, bowed, or hit, and interact with fingers, frets, dampers, and soundboards to produce a huge range of sounds. With String Studio VS-2, we have expanded these possibilities with filters, effects, and other regular synth features. You will be amazed how far you can get with a string!”

So what’s new, exactly? Well, why don’t we start on the surface before digging deeper? Redesigned from the ground up, the new interface now divides String Studio VS-2 into three panels: Play presents shortcuts to the performance and effects parameters, including bypass switches for quick edits, as well as a genuinely apt Arpeggiator — offering various synchronisation resolutions, playing algorithms, and rhythmic patterns that will spruce up any chord progressions into percolating melodies or pulsing sequences; Edit lets users tweak and create sounds by cleverly combining innovative acoustic modelling parameters and classic synth features in a unique way — be inspired by the new sonic possibilities while feeling at ease with the familiar approach to sound design; while FX adds all-new Equalizer and Compressor modules — perfect for adding punch and definition to any sound so it cuts through any dense mix or stage setup, as well as an overhauled, reinvigorated and polished multi-effects processor featuring AAS’ best-sounding chorus, delay, phaser, flanger, distortion, notch filter, wah-wah, and reverb to date — perfect for adding a final polished, professional- sounding sheen to whatever physically modelled string sounds you can come up with!

But beyond those three attractive and user-friendly front panels awaits an array of other new features. For starters, structured organisation, backup, and sharing of sounds has never been easier, thanks to String Studio VS-2’s Bank and Program management system! Speaking of sounds, the totally refreshed factory library has well over 600 production-ready sounds already classified across 11 categories — everything needed to create all the parts of any electronic production, including a collection of 50 inspiring signature presets by producer Sean Divine — for fast and intuitive investigation prior to digging deeper when moving on to solo sonic excursions. Seasoned String Studio VS-1 users, of course, can simply drop exported presets into String Studio VS-2’s Bank folder to convert them for continued usage — no need to leave anything behind, while the more adventurous sound designers out there will welcome Scala scale file format support for microtonal music-making — why stick to the chromatic scale if you don’t have to? And speaking of experimenting with the synth’s supremely powerful parameters, a new output limiter prudently protects ears and monitors and also ensures distortion-free dynamics at all times — thoughtful touch, surely?

For sure, String Studio VS-2 is packed with premium performance features, including realtime control over any parameters via MIDI controller knobs, faders, and switches; MIDI clock, tap, and host tempo synchronisation for effects and modulations; and relaxed editing with unlimited undo/redo capability. Combine these with the benefits of physical modelling — super-smooth dynamics with no velocity layers, sound manipulation at the source core, extremely fast preset loading times, and small memory footprint, for example — and what have you got? A new breed of synthesizer, that’s what!

Just ask Brazilian keyboard virtuoso Thiago Pinheiro: “Strings can be played in so many different ways. They can be played with a finger or a pick for plucked sounds, bowed for sustained sounds, or even hammered for a percussion- or keyboard-like sound. Strings can be thick or thin, and even the position you play them makes a huge difference in terms of sound. String Studio uses physical modelling to recreate the interaction of strings, and adds to that with filter, LFO, arpeggiator, full set of effects, and more. It is very expressive to the touch and feels more like an acoustic instrument — perfect for studio and stage. String Studio can take your creativity to the next level. It can create a vast number of different sounds, so, now I can only ask you: how crazy can you go with the sound of a string?”

So what are you waiting for? Why not take your creativity to the next level with String Studio VS-2? With its unique blend of acoustic modelling and regular synth features, only you can answer the question: how crazy can you go with a string?

String Studio VS-2 is available to buy for instant download delivery directly from Applied Acoustics Systems for an introductory discounted price of $99.00 USD (rising to $199.00 USD on July 1, 2014) from here: https://www.applied-acoustics.com/string-studio-vs-2/buy/ (Note that this time-limited offer also includes the new Frontier String Studio VS-2 and AAS Player sound bank by artist and sound designer Daniel Stawczyk.)

"First came the Odyssey Mk I (Model 2800) produced between 1972-75. These used a smooth sounding 2-pole voltage-controlled filter design (model 4023) similar to those used in the Oberheim SEM modules. From 1972 to 74 the Odyssey was produced with a white-faced front panel with black lettering. During 1974 to 75 they switched to a redesigned black front panel with gold lettering. However, all Mk I's can be identified by the rotary knob they use for pitch bending. The unit sounds great for her age, it defiantly needs a good cleaning for something of this vintage, All sliders and caps are with the unit, but needs a good solid cleaning and Lubrication as most are stiff"

Be sure to read up on cleaning ARP sliders. It's not as simple as spraying something in them.

ADDAC System Skate Decks Video

Published on Jul 2, 2014 ADDAC System·12 videos

"The Story behind ADDAC System skate deck:

ADDAC System + Fall Skateboards joint venture supporting the local skate community

This project was personally driven and it's my public admittance of being a skateboarding fan.
I picked up skateboarding in the late 80's, and while i was never that good at it i kept riding throughout all the 90's, did a 10 year hiatus when i moved to Lisbon but picked it up again in 2010 (really needed some activity that would take me away from the laptop and the soldering iron) skateboarding was still in my heart and still felt challenged by it so, without being too crazy about it, i cleaned the dust of my old skateboard, which by then was almost an artefact from the past, and started frequenting a recently built nearby skatepark. At the skate park there was a few people that were there almost every time i'd go there and we started getting acquainted, after going through the phase of them calling me Sir (damn, i felt old when it happened, most of them were born in the late 90's some in the early 2000's!!) we've become friends and I started to know them better, and how they deal with the urge to skate and the money necessary to do it. Skating can shred your wallet especially if you practice daily, shoes and decks only last up to 2 months this hoping you don't break a deck on some unfortunate landing. So i watch them struggling with these money issues while riding 2nd and 3rd hand boards all soft and chipped out which greatly influence their progression in the sport, i remember how the exact same thing happened to me 20 years ago and i felt compelled of supporting these young guys. I started by helping them have access to cheaper prices being the ebay intermediary and buying stuff online whenever they asked me to and from there i started thinking on this project, making decks to support the local skate community.
After a small conversation with our good friends at Fall Skateboarding we immediately started preparing this joint venture!
So, in this context, we made 50 decks from which 25 are reserved for the local park kids, these will be sold at production price becoming the cheapest decks in Portugal!
The remaining 25 will be numbered and signed by me and sold at 45€ per deck.
These are good quality decks, made of canadian maple hardwood with mellow concave.

All the very best and keep shredding!

ELEKTRON ANALOG RYTM vs. MFB TANZBÄR

Published on Jul 2, 2014 LESINDES·189 videos

"I've tried to tweak the same sounds in MFB TANZBÄR and ELETRON RYTM. But I was not able to. So the sounds are not identical but comparable. The Sounds are analog Kick, Snare, Hihat. Kick and Snare in 2 different variations.
To see how they are in the mix I took the Yamaha DX200 arrangement from the former video. In the end of the video the four different beats are solo without other instruments.
Since the TB has no on board FX I did not use any in RYTM only a pinch of distorsion to make some sounds rougher but no reverb, delay or compression.
The whole mix has undergone a Manley EQ and Comp treatment."

"This is an early 90's vintage Yamaha PCM Waveform and Voice Data ROM card set, "SAX 1". This is a nice Yamaha ROM card set for the SY55 synthesizer keyboard and the TG55 MIDI Tone Generator. These are the 2 cards in very good condition, in their original Yamaha jewel type case, with the spine artwork and data booklet.

These work perfectly, and provide 64 new voices and 4 new sample waveforms. About half the voices are either brass or woodwind type sounds, with the remainder being various keyboard, percussion, plucked, effects, and other sounds. The new waveforms can also be used to mix with the SY55 and TG55's on board waveforms to make your own new sounds as well.

The waveform card will also work by itself in the RY30 and RM50 drum machines, the SY85 and TG500 synthesizers, and quite possibly other Yamaha instruments that accept these types of waveform card. The "soft" Alto sax wave is my personal favorite and is very realistic sounding! The voice data card is only for use with the SY-55 or TG-55, and is to be used along with the waveform card to allow for all sounds to be used.

These kinds of sets are getting harder to find, especially together in their case with all notes, as this pair are."

This is a fun 20 page supplemental booklet for use with the DX-21 FM keyboard, and at nearly 30 years old and not very common at all, it's also a collector's item now!

via this auction

Tijuana preset. Note the 1377695 under the ACCOMP PRESET VOLUME. Curious if that's the SN.

"Item Details

For sale is this vintage 1976 Thomas 2001 organ. With it's incredibly iconic space age design, a model name with an unmistakable reference to Kubrick's Space Odyssey, and enough backlit gadgetry to be confused for a Soviet-era space capsule, it's quite clear why the famous The Standard hotel in Downtown Los Angeles has their entire entrance dedicated to their very own Thomas 2001 organ. With an obvious Panton-era physical presence and Saarinen style curves, this is the perfect instrument for a retro-inspired decor or interior. Incredibly attractive and almost subtle, this organ will undoubtedly be the conversation piece in any environment.

This particular example works perfectly, and includes; the original bench, the original smoked glass sheet music stand, and even the original owner's/maintenance manual."

Update: some additional info via Steve Cain on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge

"I love mine, if you look closely it not only has the Tijuana preset, but the Speak Easy section that synchs with the rhythm section. There are some that come with a module called 'Band Master' [pictured below], one of the earliest programmable and commercially available drum machines...mine does not...

They weigh a freaking ton and are put together in the oddest way, I work with an organ installer (his part time job) and it took him an hour to get the pedals off of it.

Those black rectangles are module bays, one for the drum machine, one for a tape deck and no idea what went in the 3rd.

BTW, the serial # is under the top lid, usually on the back wall of the main compartment on the inside. If you are lucky, the wiring diagrams are still stapled to the underside if the top key deck, you have to lift it up and set the kickstand to find it. Those #s on the sliders I think are part #s

One last note, at the time of manufacture, Thomas was the company assembling Moog synths, while not the Combo organ with the Satellite for the top deck, it does have some of the mid 70s Moog flavor to some of the sounds."

"BRAND NEW power supply, fully replaced voltage regulator, and has been carefully cleaned inside and out. This synth has only had two owners and functions 100%. This item requires NO WORK, restoration, or modification on your part, it has been very well maintained and is ready for use. Manual, sound diver, and hard case are all included. I have included the manufacturer's description below for more information:

The Fizmo is a 48-voice synthesizer which uses 2nd-generation Transwave technology to create very organic sounds unlike any other synth available. Every programming function has its own dedicated knob or button, and there is a limited but useful 4-character LCD display. The Fizmo features an Arpeggiator and 24-bit VLSI effects with 41 algorithms, including a Vocoder and the ability to process incoming audio through the Vocoder and effects.

The FIZMO has some of the most interesting sounds you've ever heard and a great 80's retro look. This keyboard is great for dance/electronic/new age/soundtrack work. The synth is midi compatible, with lots of on-board knobs and wheels, so it can double as an incredibly flexible midi controller. The ability to program this thing is astounding. You can read more about it here."

Its in great condition considering its 35 years old. Everything works, all keys sound, all inputs work, has CV & S-trigger inputs (Yamaha call it HZ/v) for

linking with other old synths or to use with a Midi to CV converter.

Few minor things, there is two small marks on the end of one key as pictured, and a couple of the pots have a slight crackle, but that's common in gear of this age."
