Monome 64, Aleph & Eurorack Videos by Benjamin Kinsman

ohm Published on Jul 22, 2014 Benjamin Kinsman

"This patch has a whole lot going on..

1) Monome 64 running 'The Party Van' in max runtime which is playing back the chants (yes that's me singing..) I recorded into it with manipulation just over active and start point and some granularized Tibetan singing bowls and chimes

2) Monome Aleph w/Stasis scene into which I've recorded Mutable instrument Braids' various physical models (trig & pitch from Makenoise Brains/Pressure Points) and then cut up and tweaked with some echo. The playback points, grain size, pitch and various other parameters are mapped out to the different encoders and switches. Bigs ups to Duncan Speakman for writing this fantastic scene, it's blowing my mind!

3) Eurorack modular:
Bass - Mutable Instruments Braids sequenced by Makenoise Brains/Pressure points going into Makenoise MMG then into an Optomix. Envelopes from Makenoise Maths triggered by 4ms QCD (clock div/mult ranged from -8 to x5)

Mid Range Arp - Tip Top Audio z3000 mk. 2 sequenced by Makenoise Wogglebug into Intellijel uscale 2 in channel 2 of the Optomix with envelopes again from Maths trig'd from QCD then into Makenoise Echophon with a mulitplied clock from the QCD

Mid range Seq - Osc's 1 & 2 of Harvestman Hertz Donut mk.2 sequenced by Pressure Points into Makenoise Modemix with envelopes for mult'd Maths and Function triggered from Maths EOR.

All sounds going into an Allen Zed 10 with Eventide Space in the FX loop.

Boom!

Enjoy."

E-MU Emulator II with HXC Floppy Emulator

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"5.25 floppy has been replaced with an hxc floppy drive emulator. This is an original emulator ii that has been upgraded to a plus model as indicated by the several roms on the inside. The plus model was capable of splits and had more memory than the original eii. I will include a cdrom disc that has some hxc software and readme files on it. The software is also backed up on the 2gb sd card that is included. The card has blank disk images that will boot the emu and can be saved onto. These can be created from scratch on most computers with the available software. This item does work. When the drive was replaced the wiring harnesses were worked on a little bit and the power supply was adjusted. It runs pretty well now. The buttons were a little sluggish at first, but have largely come back after being used for a little while. This is common on electronics that have sat for a long time. The more it is used the better they will get. All buttons respond double trigger or don't trigger on the first time occasionally. The sliders are in good shape and feel pretty smooth. The caps on the slide pots are reproductions. I'm including the emu dust cover in the last picture. The fit is pretty good, not perfect. It's a fairly good fit for such an odd shape keyboard..."

New BugBrand CrossOver Filter Released

You might remember the audio demos here. The filter is now available.

"The new CrossOver Filter contains a pair of Resonant State-Variable Filters with Voltage Control - the design springs from the old PRC3A SV-Filter design in the Modular line, but takes it all a lot further to make an extremely versatile studio tool.

The filters, run either in series or parallel, split the signal into three frequency-bands which can either be taken out to different destinations (think multi-band compression, extreme stereo-spatialisation, etc.) or re-mixed internally via the normalising output jacks.

More words & sounds are now online here.

Duet for Synthesizer and The Singing Ringing Tree

Published on Jul 21, 2014 John Keston

"This is the first from dozens of takes during a five day recording session and performance series at the Singing Ringing Tree (SRT) in Burnley, UK, a wind activated musical panopticon in Northern England. The sculpture was designed by architects Tonkin Liu and completed in December 2006. I performed accompaniment for the SRT binaural recordings simultaneously using a Novation Bass Station II connected to a USB battery. I also ran the Bass Station II through a Moog Minifooger Delay.

NOTE: This is a binaural recording combined with a monophonic synthesizer track. Although it sounds great through speakers, circumaural headphones must be used to experience the binaural effect."

Roland Jupiter 8 with Encore MIDI SN 171654

"Roland’s ultimate polyphonic flagship from 1981, never bested! I purchased the unit (s/n 171654) in 1995 with the Encore MIDI already installed. A key feature of the Encore is arpeggiator sync via MIDI. It was a mainstay of our private smoke-free studio, and it’s the only Jupiter-8 I know of that has not needed any servicing for the past 19 years. It spent last week at The Analog Lab anyway, where the following spruce-ups were performed: The front panel was dropped and all controls were cleaned. The white modulation switch was refurbished with new contact material (it goes bad after a number of years). The keyboard was removed, all contacts cleaned and reinstalled. A full calibration was performed and all functions checked. Finally, the factory patches were re-loaded."

Roland TR-909 Timing Issues

According to Innerclock Systems, makers of precision tempo-sync solutions, all Roland TR-909s suffer from rhythmic jitter:

"The TR-909 uses a single CPU that runs the whole circus and, like all computers it’s a serial process – it has many tasks to do. If the sequencer step trigger timing has no higher interrupt priority than any other task within the machine then, when the CPU has to deal with some other task everything else takes a back seat. That’s why she is a sloppy beast. Always was. Always will be..."

The Rev 4 update does not address the problem:

"Regarding the TR-909 Rev 4 Update – this was a Roland factory-addressed fault/software bug in the Rev 1/2 System EPROM:-

http://www.diprec.com/tr909/tr909.htm

The Rev 4 Update will correct long term cumulative sync drift when externally synced to Midi Clock from any source.

Rev 1 units will not sync to Midi Clock. Ever. Don’t bother trying.

Din-Sync and FSK external tempo-sync stability is unchanged with the Rev 4 Update.

This update does not address the more serious problem of sloppy timing within the machine itself. That would require a total software re-write and some hardware design changes which will never happen."

Read the full post on the Innerclock Systems blog.

Curious how the timing is on the new TR-8. If the TR-8 can precisely cover the TR-909, is it a better solution than the original?

Of course the question is whether you notice the jitter. There are plenty of 909 users out there.

Grassi Box - Analysis

"The Grassi Box is a MIDI-to-relay piece of hardware (built by Dan Wilson of Circitfied) based on an Arduino teensy and some accompanying software tools built in Max. The idea is to be able to control a variety of my ciat-lonbarde instruments from a computer.
