Prophet T8 Aftertouch Retrofit

Published on Jul 28, 2014 New England Analog LLC

Audio at 3:52.

"This is the second part of our video series on the Prophet T8. The first part dealt with replacing the badly degraded foam. This part addresses the replacement of all of the aftertouch boards with NEA T8 Aftertouch Boards. Our boards are a direct replacement for the original aftertouch boards, with identical multiplexing circuitry. The only difference is that we are using high quality, modern, FSR sensors which are superior to the originals. As the old sensors fail, they become less and less sensitive until the carbon is completely worn away. These new sensors will make your T8's aftertouch feel like new and the response will be even across the entire keybed. The complete set of replacement boards is $1100. The price is high because the sensors used aren't cheap and each board also gets hand assembled. If you'd like more information, or would like to order a set of boards for your T8 or Synclavier, please contact us."

I performed accompaniment for the SRT binaural recordings simultaneously using a Novation Bass Station II connected to a USB battery. I also ran the Bass Station II through a Moog Minifooger Delay.

NOTE: This is a binaural recording combined with a monophonic synthesizer track. Although it sounds great through speakers, circumaural headphones must be used to experience the binaural effect."

PinballDJ for iOS

Published on Jun 29, 2014

iTunes: PinballDJ - Unified Game

"UnifiedGame proudly presents “PinballDJ” - a tool for groove composition, playfull beat exploration - and general noodling about and making things go “boing”!

With PinballDJ you can create your own music by building tracks of elements known from classic pinball: Props, Boards and Plungers.
Our unique combination of a physics- and musical quantization engine thus makes it very easy to make interesting grooves. Also, our file-system allows for saving and publication of “tracks” just by sharing the image-thumbnails of a track.

In the app, there are many Props with different sounds and every Prop and Board have different properties which you can adjust to make it sound unique and varied over time. Props plays their sounds when hit by balls. Balls are fired by plungers - and boards are just…. boards to deflect balls. So - to 'compose', you place these different elements on a blank canvas called a “track” so that the balls will hit Props and make sounds. You can use more than one Plunger and you can use many Props.

PinballDJ, which is a free download, let’s you explore a couple of different sound-sets (we call them "toolkits"). Also available as in-app purchases, you can add more concurrent tracks, a recording function for recording your beats in wav-files for import in your favourite DAW - and also buy new sounds. We’ve added a “beatbox” toolkit, lots of samples from our in-house modular eurorack kit, as well as a “dubstep” toolkit.

For now we have a fixed tempo and a fixed set of possible quantizations. That, together with new toolkits, will be first on our agenda for later updates. We’re also considering adding MIDI functionalities and different filter-options - possible controlled by the phones accelerometer. For now, regrettably, we’re unable to allow for Audiobus compatibility, as our physics and graphics engine does not allow background-processing. We might look at that at a later stage.

We welcome all and every suggestions to pinballdj@unifiedgame.com. Also - we’re looking for toolkit-creators and we’re planning a couple of competitions surrounding creative use of this tool (where the best composition will win an iPad mini - we’ll post details later).

PinballDJ can be downloaded free from the AppStore - and you can check out our website, PinballDJ.com for more Info. Also, we've added a Teaser video - as well as YouTube channel with tutorials. Please don’t hesitate a micro-second before contacting us for more info etc."

"The 800DV is basically two 700s MiniKorgs in one chassis with a duo phonic keyboard like the ARP Odyssey. Each "voice" has its own dedicated row of functions: And amazing band pass filter that just hits resonance, envelope, modulation section (vibrato, portamento, bend) a dedicated ring modulator, two oscillators, and a really deep "repeat" section, that allows you to retrigger each voice either independently or together. You can also send each voice to an external effect as they each have their own output. I love this synth, but I am making room in the studio for other beasts.

I am including a fully built, uninstalled CV/Gate control PCB from Non Linear Circuits. This, should you choose to install it, will give you full CV control of each voice, and also allow for cv/gate output as well. These boards are also rare, and this one is professionally assembled and ready for installation.

Don't miss out on an opportunity to own a really rare and wonderful piece of synth history."

SYNTHETIC SOUND LABS SEGWENCER 2520 MODULAR EURORACK SYNTHESIZER MODULE

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The SSL 2520 Segwencer™ Euro module is indeed in a class of its own. The name derives from the audio term “segue” (fading from one sound to another), and the synth term “sequence” (moving from one point / sound to another), and once combined, there is a synergy that blasts these concepts into a totally new way of morphing sounds, textures and even control voltages.

Before we go any further, a bit of explanation is probably in order. If you know a bit about pipe organ history, you know that a "crescendo" pedal is not a simple volume control. Pipe organs can control volume by opening and closing louvers in front of the pipes (called “swell”), but can’t really control brightness / timbre. A crescendo can add the perception of brightness and impact by adding more “ranks”. This is typically done with a separate pedal that the artist moves forward to bring in brighter and louder sounds. On a pipe organ, the mechanics of this are fairly straight-forward but technically complex. As the artist goes from soft to loud with the crescendo pedal, several “switches” are sequentially engaged. Each successive switch causes a new pipe rank to sound, therefore it becomes increasingly fuller with each stage of the crescendo pedal.

So, what is the SSL Segwencer? In a typical Voltage Controlled studio environment, a control voltage is fed to the “Depth” input which (through an on-board attenuator) controls which of the four Segwencer channels is active based on the input voltage. Each channel of the Segwencer has a separate built in VCA (DC coupled!) input and output, as well as a comvenient Mix output that can frequently save a mixer.

By this description, you might think that the Segwencer harshly “switches” from channel to channel – which is not in itself a bad thing. Here is where the Segwencer really shines.

The Segwencer has a “Width” panel control that literally softens the progressive transitions between the channels. So YOU have complete control over the transition of the “switch” point between the channels, and the “softness” of how that channel switches. Really cool!

Obviously, using a voltage pedal could emulate the actions of a crescendo pedal, but how about feeding the Depth input with an envelope generator? What about an LFO, or even keyboard velocity voltages. And since the VCAs are DC coupled, imagine possibilities of Segwencing control voltages, or even CVs AND audio in the same segwence? The combinations are staggering.

Imagine taking each basic waveform from a VCO into each input of the Segwencer and having the Segwencer smoothly blend the waves? Or how about a sine wave into channel “A” out to a audio mixer, an LFO into channel “B” out to the VCOs CV input, and a wavefolded sine into channel “C” out to the audio mixer? Result: Sine, to FM modulated sine, to distorted sine.

The VCA inputs are conveniently normallized, so - How about a voltage controlled quad panner with each output going to a separate speaker? Or maybe three or four VCOs in a musical chord (or dischord if that floats your boat), each into a separate Segwencer input, with the Segwencer “Mix” output as audio? Result: Think about it.

You'll probably find youself using at least one Segwencer for just about every patch!

CIRCUITBENDERS.CO.UK CB55 - Boss DR55 Drum Machine PCB Clone

"The circuitbenders.co.uk CB55 is an exact clone of the voice board of the Boss DR55 drum machine. It has the four fully analogue percussion sounds, bass drum, hat, snare, and rimshot, but leaves out the clunky and arguably useless sequencer. There is also an overall accent feature that adds a little extra punch to the whole mix when it is triggered.

Unlike with the DR55, instead of repeatedly attempting to program a pattern only to find that you messed up the bassdrum on the 16th step so you have to start all over again, the sounds and accent on the CB55 board are triggered externally using standard trigger pulses. With the optional trigger conditioning circuit installed you can use also use gate signals, or trigger pulses longer than 10ms..."

Modular Sessions Vol.2 - Shifting Space

Published on Jul 28, 2014 vcoadsr

"What are the 'Modular Sessions Vol.2'?
The aim is to write, perform and record a new track in a single take using only a Eurorack modular synth (and FX pedals). The key motivation comes from the idea of creating and performing a complete song using a limited set of tools and removing the ubiquitous DAW from the creative process.

'Modular Sessions Vol.2' is available to buy on Bandcamp here:
http://vcoadsr.bandcamp.com/album/modular-sessions-vol-2

And can be streamed on Soundcloud here:
https://soundcloud.com/vcoadsr/sets/modular-sessions-vol-2

Tools used in the making of ‘Shifting Space’ :
12U Eurorack Modular Synth
Eventide Space reverb pedal

Recorded in a single take, no external sequencing, post-production limiting/compression applied only.

Eurorack modular synth patch notes:

This patch is comprised of four elements; drums, baseline, sub-bass line and high register melody line.

All parts in one way or another are being clock by the Tiptop Trigger Riot via ALM’s Pamela’s Workout.
The drums are being directly triggered by the Trigger Riot in particular the Tiptop BD909, 909CP, RS808 and the HATS909, These are then being summed using the Intellijel Unity mixer before being sent to the mixer where some reverb from the Eventide Space deal is added on the send/return loop.

The main baseline synth part starts with the Square wave output from ALM’s SID GUTS module that has it’s pitch modulated by the the Toppobrillo Quantimator in chord mode and using 5ths chord option. The Quantimator is also in ‘Arpeggio function mode’ and is being triggered by ALM’s Pamela’s Workout to give the arpeggiated rhythm. The Quantimator is receiving CV from the Makenoise Rene sequencer in snake mode that is being clocked by Pamela’s workout too. The Square wave from SID GUTS is being sent to a channel on Makenoise QMMG in ‘both’ mode and output to the mixer. The QMMG ‘both’ channel is being struck by an envelope from the Intellijel Quadra module that in turn is being triggered by again Pamela’s workout.

The sub-baseline part comes from multing the square wave output from SIDGUTS into the 4ms RCD and then taking the ‘/2’ output back into another channel of the QMMG in ‘LP’ mode that is being modulated using an envelope from the 4ms PEG that is being clocked by Pamela’s workout. The output is being sent straight tho the mixer with some reverb added from the Eventide Space pedal.

The high register synth part comes from the Makenoise DPO ‘Final’ output that is having its wave shaping modulated by the LFO mode from oscillator 1 in the DPO. The pitch of the ‘Final’ output comes from the pitch CV from the Quantimator being multed into the Expert sleepers ‘Disting’ module in S+H mode. The S+H is then triggered by Pamela’s workout and the output CV is sent to the DPO. The output from the DPO is then sent to another QMMG ‘Both’ channel that is being struck using an envelope from the Makenoise Matths where the ‘Fall’ parameter is being manually opened and closed through out the track. The Maths envelope is being triggered by the Intellijel uStep that in turn is being clocked by Pamela’s workout. The output of this QMMG ‘Both’ channel is then being sent to the Makenoise Echophon that is being clocked by Pamela’s workout. The Echophon is using the ‘Loop 2’ mode with depth fully clock wise and the Pitch knob at 9 ‘o clock. The Echophon output is then being sent to the Makenoise Erbe-verb module where it’s size parameter is being modulated throughout out the track by the 4ms PEG on a slow 2 bar triangle wave to expand and shrink the size of the reverb. The decay parameter is manually modulated through the track to create reverb feedback. The Erbe-verb output is then sent to the mixer.

Finally each drum and synth part is sent to the Eventide Space pedal in varying amounts for reverb (using the ‘30. Ambience’ preset) and the final stereo out is recorded into Ableton as a glorified tape recorder."
