Modified Realistic Moog MG-1 Synthesizer Demo

Published on Oct 3, 2014 sizzlemeister

"I modified this MG-1 a few years ago. Don't ask for schematics or anything, as I don't think I kept my notes. These are basic modifications, anyway, for anyone who knows what they're doing.

Here is the list of modifications, and/or updates/work done:

LFO - added Medium, Fast, (S)Low speed selection switch

Osc 1 - added Pulse Width knob, plus Pulse Width routing switch (manual, LFO)

Osc 2 - added Pulse Width knob. Added Detune Routing switch (LFO, Envelope, off or manual). If memory serves, Osc 2 was also lowered an octave.

Filter - added Feedback knob, plus a switch to turn Feedback on or off.

A Power LED was added.

Keybed - each key removed and hand-cleaned. The keybed was adjusted to be quicker and more responsive.

CV inputs - modded to accept standard 1v / octave analog control.

New audio output IC (I forget what I put in there, but it's new and better than the stock one).

Standard 1/4 inch output jack replaces stock RCA output jacks.

Lower PCB inside reinforced to be more structurally stable.

Complete power supply overhaul.

Electrolytic capacitors replaced.

Various switches and sliders replaced with new ones as necessary.

Fully tuned and calibrated.

All foam removed and foam damaged components cleaned and, if necessary, replaced.

All plastic and metal hand-cleaned of gunk, nasties, and yuckies (I'm a germaphobe)."

Korg Poly 800 with Moog Slayer and other filter mods plus a built in BSIAB II

Uploaded on Jun 29, 2011 sizzlemeister

"Korg Poly 800 with Moog Slayer mod, Filter Frequency Modulation mod, 12/24 db Filter switching, and a BSIAB II grafted into the former chorus circuit. I picked up this Poly 800 at a yard sale and it was in very bad shape, so I gave it bath and fixed it up. It needed the power section rebuilt and some other work, plus the joystick knob was missing so I replaced that. I added an internal battery for the memory."

"This is one for the synth collectors. This is the original folder and 7 photo cards that shipped with every Crumar purchase in the late 70s/early 80s in Europe. The collection has 7 individual product photos of Crumar gear including stands, and on the back is a printed spec sheet of each card. This is incredibly rare and as you can tell from the photographs, is in almost museum condition. There's not a single fold on any of the cards and the print is vibrant and bright. Simply beautiful."

"Intended to represent Sequential's first entry into the low-cost digital sampler market, the Prophet 2002 was equipped with 256k or 512k sample memory, and selectable sampling rates of 16, 32, and 42kHz at 12 bit audio resolution. External storage was provided via 3.5" diskette. The Prophet 2002 features MIDI, 8 voice polyphony, up to 8 layers, and an arpeggiator. Despite their technological limitations, early digital samplers like the Prophet 2002 are noted for their warm audio quality as a result of analog VCFs and VCAs."

OB-X Based VSTi OB-XTREME, OP-X & OBXD OSC & Filter TEST

Published on Oct 3, 2014 Aly James

"http://www.alyjameslab.com READ DESCRIPTION!

By popular demand...let's do a basic comparison of the OSC and FILTER sound of those OB-X based VSTis, as nobody seems to read products specs and details..

No insert, nothing on the master bus, just the VSTs, same settings.

I have been used all at some point and they are all good, I will quickly showcase what the differences are and why OP-X, OB-XD and OB-XTREME have each their nice peculiarities.

IMO:
OP-X PRO is really good for lush PADS because it features interesting modulations the other don't have.

OB-XD is free (which is a point :) ) and feature a really nice clarity and top end the OP-X can lack while sounding warmer.

OB-XTREME have a simpler 'hands on' approach with far less functions and features but it provides 2 analog saturation stages before and after the filter and a FAT mode which makes it growl in a way the others don't.
It also feature 8 separate outputs so you can have 1 channel per voice in your DAW if you want :)

Basically I needed to have the "essence of the OB Sound" not the full feature list, mainly that huge analog wall we all love.

That is why I made OB-XTREME in the first place, in you liked the OB-X you should have them all :)"

Unlocking Dockstader by Justin H Brierley

Seeking funding on Kickstarter here.

This one in via Atomic Starter

"Electronic composer, filmmaker, cartoonist, writer, Alzheimer's patient. This film will explore the life and work of Tod Dockstader.

Tod's story: a brief introduction

Tod Dockstader is a multi-talented creator whose work remains largely unrecognized. He is perhaps most well known as a composer of electronic music and as a cartoon sound effects artist. While working at Terrytoons in the early 1960s he provided sounds for Tom & Jerry and other cartoons directed by Gene Deitch. Around the same time he also worked as a sound engineer for a studio in NYC that mostly did commercial work. He used these resources during his off hours to create several albums startling electronic music that influenced artists like Frank Zappa, Pete Townshend, and Aphex Twin. Some of this music was even used by Fellini as part of the Satyricon soundtrack.

Tod's creativity ranges far beyond music and sound effects. He was an avid writer (poetry, short stories, plays, music reviews, etc..) and evidence suggests that he very much desired a writing career long before he started making music. He was also a filmmaker whose company Westport Communications Group produced educational films that were distributed by McGraw Hill as part of their American Heritage series. Tod did most of the creative work on these films: writing, producing, and directing. One of the goals of my film is to show Tod for the true Renaissance man that he is.

Backstory

Like many great documentaries this project has changed and evolved over time. My original idea was simply to do a phone interview with Dockstader for my radio show. Then I learned about Tod's dementia and I set out to film interviews while he could still remember some of his past. At that time, Tod's daughter Tina entrusted me to his old computer which is filled with unreleased music that he was working on during the early stages of his dementia. I tried playing him his own music to see if he could remember anything about how he created it. He couldn't, however I noticed that he very much enjoyed the listening and would sometimes tell other stories about his life. As time went on his physical health deteriorated, including his hearing, and the positive effects of listening to music also lessened.

Now

And then I got an iPad. I started bringing that along and showing Tod different music making apps. The result is amazing. He's particularly fond of the official John Cage Prepared Piano app and the amazing multi-touch synthesizer TC-11, which was generously donated by its developer, Bit Shape Software. Seeing Tod not only light up with delight, but also engaging his creativity has given me a new idea and direction for this film.

Future

The first major change is that I will be enlisting the help of a certified Music Therapist. I want to see if by engaging his creativity I can help him access memories that have been lost to him. Up until now I have been able to visit Tod an average of once or twice per month. I will be increasing those visits to near daily, occasionally accompanied by a professional Music Therapist. These session will form the foundation upon which I tell Tod's amazing life story."

Let's Play with Arturia iProphet (Patch Design & Commentary)

Published on Oct 3, 2014 Tim Webb

iTunes: iProphet - Arturia

Quick note on wavetable vs vector synthesis. With wavetable each oscillator can be assigned to a table of waves that you can scan or morph through for movement. With vector each oscillator can be assigned to a static wave form that you can then morph between mix levels typically with a joystick controller.

Roland Jupiter 8 Synthesizer in Stunning Condition

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via the seller/listing: "Absolutely stunning condition. I've never encountered one this clean which is why I purchased it at a premium a few years ago for my synth collection. Functioning perfectly in every way. Early Pre DCB Jupiter in original unmodified condition (No MIDI mods). Serial Number reads 13-151 which I believe makes it the 51st unit manufactured. I purchased from original owner in Northern California where it has only been lightly used in a recording studio. Never gigged.

As a collector that is obsessed with detail, I want to list these minor imperfections, all are shown in photos:

Slight finish rub under VCA ENV-2 label.
2 light scratches in left aluminum side.
Marking on the 'O' in Roland branding on rear.
Slight finish rub under PANEL MODE - LOWER button."

Interesting side note from the listing: "Sid stations have a inherit flaw of sometimes the data becomes corrupted and you will have to send the patches to it again. Every once in a while it happens so I recommend backing up the saves you make to Sysex cause one day you will turn it on to find the patches you made gone. Please read in the manual it tells you about this happening and it will explain why it happens and tell you the same thing I did so please know this before buying. I will send the winner all the Sysex files I have for it on a disk cause some day you will need them."
