-SSM2040 VCF includes external cutoff control and audio input. Same as the Prophet 5 rev 2 and RSF Kobol. Many synth geeks agree this is the best sounding analog VCF ever made."

Performing with his own folding case he praised the possibilities of having 808 and 909 drumsounds in such a compact instrument for comparably small prices. Even after he introduced all the modules that could have been found in this system, we reduced the lenght of the video to the most compact overview of some very good ones combined with some sounds he made that evening..."

"SE-1X Red Eye (also "skinned" as the Angel Dust)

Looking beyond the CODE-flavored, sectioned grey to black front panel visuals, with its splashes of blood-red switches and an electric blue display, one discovers some serious sweetening: the second VCO now boasts a silky "ARP-ish" sine wave which replaces the more industrial strength triangle, a switchable "Fuzz" circuit for amp overdrive and saturation, snappier envelopes, discrete filters with an expanded frequency range, and seven banks of S.E. sound design which demand satisfaction: four legendary SE-1X factory banks; three designer sets: the techno-focused Scroggins Synquence, and brand new Infared and Diademer––693 presets in total!

The last RAM bank (bank 8) is on you."

Moog Werkstatt-01 World Wide Release and Online Modification & Creative Learning Portal

Werkstatt-Ø1 | P-Thugg Published on Oct 7, 2014

"In this video, Chromeo's Patrick "P-Thugg" Gemayel builds an improvisatory track using only the Moog Werkstatt-Ø1 and a simple drum pattern. The Werkstatt-Ø1 is a patchable, 100% analog synthesizer capable of producing a wide variety of classic Moog sonics. For this track P-Thugg summons vintage Moog basslines, expressive leads and evocative sound effects from the Werkstatt-Ø1, demonstrating the range and flexibility of its painstakingly designed circuits."

"Moog Announces World Wide Release of Werkstatt-01 Analog Synth & Online Modification and Creative Learning Portal

ASHEVILLE, NC – October 7, 2014 – Today Moog announced the official worldwide release of the Werkstatt-01 Analog Synthesizer Moogfest 2014 Kit — a patchable analog synthesizer designed to inspire the exploration and modification of classic Moog circuits while delivering a myriad of vintage and new raw, mangled, and monstrous Moog tones. This highly-portable instrument is secured in a solid-steel chassis and features a harmonically rich Moog VCO, classic 4-pole Moog Ladder filter, wide-range LFO with audio-rate modulation capabilities, ADS envelope generator, and an analog patchable header for expansive sonic experimentation, manipulation, and decimation. To demonstrate the range and flexibility of Werkstatt's classic Moog sonics, Moog has released a video featuring Patrick "P-Thugg" Gemayel, keyboard player for Atlantic Records’ band Chromeo, building an improvisatory electro funk track using only the Moog Werkstatt-Ø1 and a simple drum pattern (see video link).

Today also marks the launch of WerkstattWorkshop.com (beta) — an interactive creative learning portal containing project ideas, mod tutorials [videos below], parts lists, educational lesson plans, 3D printer files, Arduino integration and control and many other dynamic resources for Werkstatt owners. This microsite also includes Moog’s new and on-going research surrounding the use of subtractive synthesizers in STEM and STEAM high-school classrooms. Lessons in these studies are focused on project based learning opportunities, and encouraging a creative deployment of practical skills in STEM fields. All lessons and associated materials are open source and available online free to educators across multiple disciplines.

“Analog synthesizers have long had their own maker culture born of curious engineers, musicians, and hobbyists alike,” said Moog Music CEO, Mike Adams. “Bob Moog got his start at the age of 15 by studying and modifying Leon Theremin’s designs. We’d like to share our legacy of learning, music, and electronics to empower a new generation of makers to expand on our work and take it to levels we can’t yet imagine." Adams said.

In April 2014, the Werkstatt-01 Analog Synthesizer Kit was made available to Engineering VIP ticket holders at Moogfest 2014, Moog's multi-day celebration of technology, art and music. The success of the workshop at the festival prompted Moog to release a limited number of Werkstatt's to select US dealers. Starting today the Werkstatt-01 Analog Synthesizer Kit is available and in stock at all Moog Music dealers worldwide. MSRP of $329US"

Playlist:
WERKSTATT | Photo Sensitive Resistor
"This simple modification adds a photocell resistor to control our VCF. By using a photocell we are able to have functional control over the filter cutoff frequency by simply moving our hand closer or farther away."

WERKSTATT | Pressure Sensitive Resistor
"In this simple mod we will be exploring using various unique resistors to interact with our Werkstatt. We will be using a force sensitive 10k resistor to interact with our VCA."

WERKSTATT | Volume Knob
"We can use the power supply taps provided on the Werkstatt to add a Volume control functionality to our Werkstatt. Having a volume knob may allow players to better integrate the Werkstatt into their setup."

WERKSTATT | Fine Tune
"The Werkstatt comes with a coarse tune potentiometer in the form of the VCO FREQ knob. However, it is sometimes necessary to have a finer control over the VCO tuning. This modification adds a fine tune potentiometer to your Werkstatt."

WERKSTATT | Pitch Bend
"Many popular synthesizers have a pitchbend wheel included for dynamic musical expressions. We will use a 10kΩ SoftPot to emulate the pitchbend wheel and add a fun functionality to our Werkstatt."

WERKSTATT | 2nd Oscillator
"The Werkstatt features a single-oscillator VCO, but by patching and attenuating our keyboard control voltage to our LFO we are able to use the LFO as a second oscillator. This feature is best used to add a lower frequency Triangle or Square wave oscillator to our Werkstatt."

WERKSTATT | Arduino Noise Generator
"A popular synthesizer feature is the noise generator. This noise can be filtered and mixed with our tonal signal to add bite or create percussive sounds. In this mod we will be using an Arduino microcontroller to add a noise generator to our Werkstatt."

WERKSTATT | Arduino Arpeggiator
"An arpeggiator is an electronic instrument feature which takes played chords and cycles through the notes in sequence at a set rate. This modification will add a arpeggiator/sequencer function to your Werkstatt by adding an Arduino micro controller and manipulating minimal code."

WERKSTATT | LFO Quantizer
"Do you want to wobble? Are you all about that bass? Do you want to add face melting to your resume? This mod is for you. Using the Arduino and some code we can create an LFO rate quantizer to sync our keyboard notes to LFO rate settings at a specific tempo."

EMS SYNTHI 100 Coming to All Connected #6 - Special on IPEM, November 2, AB Club, Brussels, 6:30 PM

"IPEM: Established in 1963 as a joint venture between the then BRT and the University of Gent, the Institute for Psycho-acoustic and Electronic Music (IPEM) developed into an important centre of research and a studio where quite a few important composers of early electronica and contemporary music worked. People like Louis De Meester, Lucien Goethals and Karel Goeyvaerts are just a few of the important figures from this exciting period in recent (Belgian) music history.

During this evening, a number of original pieces from the IPEM studio are to be seen (coming from the collection of the MiM) together with the the EMS Synthi 100. The legendary synth in the possession of the IPEM since the 70’s.

We’ll start with a reading by Dr. Micheline Lesaffer on the history of IPEM. Right afterwards, a number of compositions played from from tape by Ivan Schepers, Head of Technolgy at IPEM.

screening: To Speak Or Not To Speak, R. Servais, 1970, 10min. Short animation film by Raoul Servais for which IPEM composer Lucien Goethals made music.

live set by Keith Fullerton Withman partly on the EMS Synthi 100

Screening: Harpya, R. Servais, 1979, 9min. Animation film in which Servais uses a technique with 35 mm projections on a multi-plane with a black back ground. The film won de Palme D’Or for best short-film in Cannes. Here too, the music is of Lucien Goethals is from the IPEM."

Retronyms Introduces Wej Wireless Bluetooth USB Hub

Published on Oct 7, 2014 Retronyms

Note the demos shows the iPad being controlled by external gear through the Wej.  I'm curious if it works in the other direction so you can use controller and sequencer apps on the iPad to control hardware synths connected to the Wej.  This would require the Wej to recognize and support USB MIDI adapters.  For some hardware it would also require MIDI sysex support.   I've reached out to Retronyms and will post back if I hear back.  If anyone knows, feel free to comment.

Update: I heard back from Retronyms. The Wej will support MIDI out from the iPad and will support USB MIDI cables, so you can use sequencers and editors running on the iPad to control your hardware over bluetooth wireless.

"Yes, Wej will support MIDI out. Sysex should be supported. Also Wej is intended for controllers so MIDI timecode, clock, etc may not be something it's good at (bluetooth bandwidth may not be up to the task). Some of this is TBD."

Video description: "Wej combines a non-skid silicone base for creative work with a wireless hub for connecting USB controllers over bluetooth.

Wej needs you! Help support Wej by pre-ordering yours and get 20% off. Get Wej for just $99.00 through November 7th. http://preorder.retronyms.com

*Music courtesy of our friends at http://www.loopmasters.com"

And the press release:

"The company that brought you some of the most popular iOS music apps, including Tabletop, ReBirth, iMPC, iMPC Pro, iMini and iProphet has an exciting announcement. Retronyms is making their first venture into music hardware.

Wej is a non-skid performance platform that lets you connect your USB MIDI controllers to your iOS music apps wirelessly over the new Apple Bluetooth LE MIDI protocol. Wej features 24 ultra bright RGB LEDs so that you can add ambiance to your studio or blast an ultra-portable light show.

Retronyms is hoping you’ll help them gather enough pre-orders to support building Wej. To get you started, they're offering Wej at $99, which includes a 20% preorder discount!

Not only is Wej a great addition to your music studio, it is hackable. The core of Wej is an Arduino application processor, and they'll release the Arduino sketch for download under an open-source license. You can create anything from a MIDI controller based on your favorite joystick to a bedside charging stand with built in visual alarm clock. We’re excited to see what you come up with. Take a look at retronyms.com/hacks.html for more information on the extensibility of Wej."

Second test with Mutable Instruments Braids. No over-dubs.

Published on Oct 7, 2014 Matthew Shaw

"Second test with Mutable Instruments Braids. No over-dubs. Patch description below. Variation on Mutable Instruments Braids Study #01.

Same set-up as before with the addition of Makenoise Phonogene. The Phonogene samples Braids in slow reverse mode. The Gene Size and Gene Slide are modulated by Makenoise Wogglebug.

Melody and Percussion:
Braids in "Meta" mode, waves are selected by Intellijel Metropolis set to 'Brownian' which pseudo randomly selects waves. The sound is filtered by the Makenoise MMG, the MMG is modulated by a Doepfer A145 LFO set to a slow cycle rate. Main sequence Makenoise Pressure Points clocked by Intellijel Metropolis and modulated "Direction in" by a square wave form a Doepfer A145 LFO.

Kick and Snare:
Kick produced by Doepfer A127 Triple Voltage Controlled Filter and modulated by a Doepfer A140 ADSR. Snare made by a Doepfer A118 Noise Source, filtered by a Doepfer A121 Multi-Mode Filter and modulated by Doepfer A140 ADSR.

Clocks:
Main clock Intellijel Metropolis, this is sent to a Doepfer A160 Clock Divider which is then sent to a Doepfer A149-1 Quantized / Stored Random Voltage which intern triggers the Doepfer A-149-2 Digital Random Voltage, these clocks are then sent to the Intellijel Plog logic module to produce the kick and snare rhythm.

Delay:
Main delay comes from the Modcan Dual Delay percussion delay produced by Synthrotek EKO, the EKO's rate is modulated by a Doepfer the A118 Random Voltage and is attenuated by a Doepfer A129/3 Vocoder Slew-Limiter.

Reverb:
Doepfer A199 Spring Reverb, full wet signal in to Intellijel Mutamix"
