A Comparison of ARP Filter Modules via The Analog Lab

via The Analog Lab

"It’s interesting to see the progression of ARP’s filter design when these are lined up next to each other. Being an early model, 4012 is mainly discrete transistor pairs. The 4023 is a 12db/octave filter based around 2 CA3080s and was used in the earliest ARP Odysseys. The 4034, used in the Pro Soloist, is a transistor ladder filter using CA3086s. For the sake of comparison, we included an ARP 4075 in the pic. It’s one of the later and most widely used of the ARP filters (used in Odysseys, Omnis, etc). This is based on a LM3900 quad Norton amplifier (this is a specialized op amp) with discrete matched transistor pairs."

"The keyboard powers up but does not load the floppy disk. It appears that the motor in the floppy drive is bad. Please check out the video to see what is happening during the power on sequence. Notice that there is floppy communication (indicated by the red LED light) but it doesn't sound like the floppy is spinning. The unit is in great shape for its age, cosmetically (see photos). Included with the keyboard is the volume pedal, as well as the original manual. The original LCD was replaced with a very bright backlit display! This Emulator II has been upgraded to an Emulator II+ (1 MB of memory installed to allow two sample banks to be loaded, complete with the Rev. 1 Digital Board and EII+ Mainboot Eprom)."

These will work with the HxC floppy emulator as seen in some previous posts here.

The Harvestman Kermit Dual Modulation Aid Eurorack Module Now Available

Audio test here.

"Kermit is a dual modulator with multi-purpose CV inputs and several different operating modes. Optimized for LFO duties, each half of Kermit offers control over amplitude (like a digital VCA), frequency, or waveshape (smoothly morphing over 16 waves). A dedicated 1v/octave CV input is available for precise frequency generation. A bonus "tap tempo" mode is available where this input accepts gate signals, where the oscillator will loosely imitate the input frequency with adjustable multiplication or division. The module can operate at audio rates for use as a utility oscillator.

Two sets of outputs are provided to correctly modulate both analog and digital circuits (such as the special 0-5V inputs available on Harvestman modules). The bipolar output is nominally 10v peak-peak. The unipolar output goes from 0 to 5 volts. The amplitude control correctly affects each style of output. The output of each oscillator is normaled to the CV input of the opposite unit, allowing patchcord-free chaotic modulation with several different modulation destinations available.

The basic waveforms are of high resolution for better performance at very low frequencies."

Tech Notes for synthnerds:
Drums are Volca Beats through the Minibrute's filter being modulated by the 'brute's internal arp and lfo and controlled in real time. The 4 on the floor kick that comes in later is from the Electribe ESX-1.

There are 2 main arpeggiators running, both using Logic X's arp midi effect but with different settings:
One controls the Voyager, Volca Keys and Volca bass, (the Volcas being used as sound modules, not using their internal sequencers), but all 3 have different mod sources affecting their cutoff freqs and different delay effects.

The second controls the Doepfer Dark Energy which makes the throaty glassy distorted sound, and also has it's filter contolled by the Dark Time sequencer. The Dark time sequence also controls the cutoff of the Voyager but inverted using the Moog CP-251.

The pad is Omnisphere, using the Orb interface on the iPad to make it swirl. I'm not ashamed to say it's a preset, because Spectrasonics' presets are works of art - it's called Mercury Rising if you want to play aound with it yourself."

"This unit has had its internals serviced this year, this included cleaning all of the pots and replacing all of the capacitors. All functions are working perfectly. I will include the original spiral bound manual, a custom made, high quality S-trig (cinch Jones) to V- Trig (1/4) Cable and a small homebrew V to S trig box too- (not pretty, but it works well!). You will need the cable to connect and trig converter box if you want to control the unit via CV/Gate. Physically the synth is in very good condition, the case is very clean with exception of a dented corner on the right side (see pic) that has bent the metal trim a bit, and some spots on the rear of the unit where it looks like cables that were hanging down wore the paint off the Metal. Keyboard is a bit clanky, but its should be relatively inexpensive to have it refurbished. All of these issues are rather minor when you consider this unit was made in the mid 70s. Unit has been calibrated, but may need to be calibrated a bit once received due to the nature of analog synths from this period."

PPG WaveMapper 2 for Mac OS X and Windows Announced - Full Details

Details via Wolfgang Palm (captured here for the archives):

"PPG WaveMapper 2 for Mac And PC 1Wolfgang Palm is pleased to announce the PPG WaveMapper 2 for Mac OS X and Windows. The PPG WaveMapper first appeared as an iOS App and received widespread acclaim from public and press alike.

Music Radar said of the iOS version of WaveMapper
'Wolfgang Palm’s second iOS synth is just as impressive as his first. Again, PPG WaveMapper is one of the most complex and impressive sounding instruments on the App Store.'

Francis Preve said of the iOS version of WaveMapper in Keyboard Magazine
'So, if the depth and complexity of WaveGenerator was a tad too intimidating for users, WaveMapper has that problem solved with real innovation and an interface that brings the fun of sound design to a whole new generation of producers.'

PPG WaveMapper 2 is a greatly expanded version, with many new features, including the WaveMap and new resource merging possibilities.

PPG WaveMapper 2 comes with a very flexible synth engine, capable of playing material from classic wavetables as well as samples and a new type which we call “Time corrected sample” (TCS). This type still has the advantage of wavetables, which is totally random access of the material, but preserving the authentic sound of the original sample.

PPG WaveMapper 2 has three oscillators have independent control of the sound resources and access of the material. Each oscillator has its own WaveMap with up to 16 zones, filled with any combination of the resources. The control of the zones can be done by the keyboard, which we call Multi- tabling, or by a path that determines how the engine plays back the material.

The synthesizer is controlled by over 200 parameters, which can be directly programmed on the two editor pages. In addition to that there is the SoundMap that acts as a module manipulation tool, moving the 8 icons to different fields on the Map changes sounds. These fields are loaded with programs that then define the results of the morphing. Thus the user can setup their own “themes” of sounds they wish to generate with a setup. The morphing can be done rapidly or in an evolving morph from one sound into another.

The built in Analyzer lets you convert your own samples into resources the synth can use in its oscillators. (fig Analyser)

WaveMapper 2 comes already with around 300 resources and a huge number of presets made by our sound design team from around the world.

The browser page allows you to list and sort your sounds. besides that you can exchange single presets with another bank of sounds.

Key Features:

3 Audio Oscillators
Up to 16 resources assembled within a WaveMap
Audio engine with 4 synthesis modes, and variable wave blending quality.
3 Noise generators, for audio and modulations
Classic 24 dB Lowpass Filter, combined with an overdrive simulation.

Meng Qi - Playable Patchbay 0

Published on Oct 22, 2014 Qi Meng

"This is an instrument I made to experiment with “playable patchbay” principle.

Most modular synth controllers are made to generate expressive control signals in real time based on players’ controls. I decided to take a totally different approach of control by bringing the whole synth patching process onto playing interface.

Modular synth systems usually utilize an interface assembled with jacks, and some others utilize patching matrix such as EMS VCS3. The time and gestures involved for both interfaces are much, and in most cases it is not practical to alter multiple patch connections at the same time.

This instrument has an patching interface with springs and conductive ink, not very much unlike a matrix patchbay. But now all points can be patched by simply pressing the springs on to the board, similar to playing gestures of some string instruments, multiple signal connections can be done at the same time without effort.

CL Tetrax is chosen to take part for sound synthesis in this instrument. It’s an analog 4 voice engine based on Peter’s unique synthesis principle.

Only one "engine" of the MB6582 was used for this track - that means only two SIDs were used and mixed for a stereo effect.

Rob Papen Quad Introduction

Published on Oct 22, 2014 Rob Papen

"RE synthesizer for Propellerhead Reason 7.1 or higher.

QUAD is the first Rack Extension synthesizer built from the ground up for Reason by the Rob Papen team. It features two oscillators with a seemingly simple arsenal of classic waveforms. The sonic palette is huge though, through the vast modulation possibilities that QUAD has to offer.

The oscillators can be combined through many cross modulation functions – generating a wide range of harmonics. The next steps in the sound sculpting are the Phase Distortion and Wave Shaper. These tools are brought to life by four XY-Pads, which can be moved through an extensive modulation matrix. The movements can be recorded as automation directly into Reason’s sequencer.

QUAD’s oscillators are complemented by two top notch analogue modelled filters, an arpeggiator and two high quality effects processors.

Welcome to the new refreshing synthesizer QUAD – only in Reason!"

Reminds me of wavetable synthesis but instead of using pre-existing wavetables, they are generated on the fly.

Update: and the official press release:

"Rob Papen produces quick-fire QUAD as its first RE release built from the ground up for Reason

ECHT, THE NETHERLANDS: virtual instrument and effects plug-in developer Rob Papen Soundware is proud to announce availability of QUAD, its first Rack Extension synthesizer built from the ground up for Propellerhead Reason, as of October 28...

When Swedish music software application, interfaces, and technology standards specialist Propellerhead Software first unveiled its revolutionary Rack Extension — an ever-expandable, freely-routable rack of instruments, effects, and sounds — for its well-received Reason music-making and recording studio software solution, namesake company founder and synthesizer developer Rob Papen promptly pronounced it as being “...a brilliant concept.” Continuing, he then summarised its advantages as follows: “What we face as a developer is having to have a PC version and a Mac version, and if you run them in your regular host, you can crash your host. That’s a real big battle. People, if they use Reason, learn that things are connected. It’s cross-platform; everything works. It’s a major leap forward for Reason, and productions coming out of Reason will sound totally different. Reason remains Reason, but, now, it’s open.”

Open to the likes of Rob Papen to develop distinctive and desirable third-party Rack Extensions (RE) for Reason. Little wonder, then, that Rob Papen was amongst the first wave of developers to do just that, starting by porting over its popular ‘phat’-sounding soft synth Predator as Predator-RE, rapidly followed by its SubBoomBass-RE dedicated virtual bass synth, self-explanatory PR-Verb RE and PR-Distort RE virtual effects, plus PunchBD-RE, a versatile and easy-to-use bass drum synth.

Soft synths have always been at the core of Rob Papen’s productive business model, so it’s hardly surprising that they put some serious time and effort into porting some of their most popular products over to Propellerhead’s popular Reason platform. Yet what distinguishes QUAD from its aforementioned admired RE predecessors is that this time the company has chosen to build a Rack Extension synthesizer from the ground up. Why? Well, according to Rob Papen’s namesake founder, it “...offers a different and refreshing synthesis for your rack!”

Really? Really. “QUAD is still ‘subtractive synthesis’ like you know from Predator and so on, but the oscillator part has some interesting new features that vastly expands the sound options and makes QUAD very different from any other regular ‘subtractive synthesizer’,” reasons Rob Papen.

Put simply, QUAD has two oscillators (OSC 1 and OSC 2) at its sonic core, each endowed with a seemingly simple selection of classic waveforms (Sine, Triangle, Saw, White Noise, and Pink Noise), together with a SPREAD function (adding multiple oscillators with slightly higher and lower pitch to the main oscillators to fatten up the sound), and a SUB oscillator tuned one octave below with two selectable waveforms (Sinus and Square). Straightforward-sounding so far? Arguably yes. Yet those oscillators can be combined with many cross modulation functions, generating a wide range of harmonics. How so? “This is arranged inside OSC 1, where we also have several interesting modulation types. Also, OSC 1 can be shut down for going into the filter, so it can be exclusively used as a modulator for OSC 2.”

These already stunning sound sculpting tools are all brought to life by the four XY pads that dominate the main screen, giving OSC 1 and OSC 2 their distinctive PHASE DISTORTION and WAVE SHAPER capabilities — and also giving rise to the QUAD name. Notes Rob Papen: “For each we have several distortion or wave-shaping types. With the XY dials or XY field you can change this dynamic. The very cool thing is that with minimal effort you can quickly create a new sound and preset.”

Of course, Rob Papen himself is an internationally recognised sound designer of considerable standing, so it should come as little surprise to learn that QUAD is packed with wide-ranging Rob Papen-designed presets so you don’t have to (if you don’t want to). Those that do, of course, can delve deeper courtesy of an extensive MODULATION matrix; two effects processors (FX 1/2) that can be automated within the MODULATION matrix or via the ‘back panel’-positioned ‘external’ CV; LFO 1/2 and ENVELOPE 1/2 that can be tempo-synced; AMP section for controlling the volume contour; and more.

Moreover, QUAD offers no fewer than 28 filter types via two top-notch analogue-modelled filters (FILTER 1/2) with various routings, as well as an artistically-inspirational arpeggiator (ARP) with several playback modes. Maintains its co-creator: “It’s a big synth with many features!” For Reason users it really does offer a refreshing and different approach to synthesis, so why not extend your Rack right now?

QUAD can be purchased and directly downloaded for €99.00 EUR/$119.00 USD from the Propellerhead Shop here: https://shop.propellerheads.se/product/rob-papen-quad-instrument/ (Propellerhead operates a try-before-you-buy service for those wishing to test Rack Extensions.)"

Deconstructing beats with the KOMA Elektronik pedals

Published on Oct 22, 2014 KOMA Elektronik

"In this video the Master output of the Acidlab MIAMI is being processed by the KOMA Elektronik BD101 Gate/Delay and FT201 Filter/Sequencer effect pedals creating a dub techno drum sequence.

The Acidlab Miami is synced to the KOMA pedals via the RH301's Din Sync Output. The RH301 is the masterclock of this setup.

The signal runs into the BD101 with the Delay Time knob almost fully open. The LFO CV Out of the RH301 is modulating the Delay Time CV In of the BD101 with a synced square wave signal while the tempo-synced Inverted Envelope CV Out of the RH301 is patched into the Cycle (Feedback) of the BD101, creating drony overtones.

The signal runs then into the FT201 in Low Pass mode (all three outputs can be used at the same time). The internal sequencer of the FT201 is synced to the Clock Out of the RH301, making sure all the filtersteps of the unit are in time and on the beat.
