John Bowen SOLARIS Synthesizer

"Up for auction is argueably the best sounding synth made to date, the somewhat rare and amazing John Bowen SOLARIS. The SOLARIS is a high-end digital synthesizer, which features state-of the-art digital synthesizer technology, yet sounds like classics of the past, or digitals of the present and future. Because of John's early successes working for Moog and Sequential Circuits, and Korg, John had an intimate knowledge of analog synthesis...but later on, he also became one of the best designers of digital synthesis with Creamware and Zarg. This made John uniquely qualified to combine all he had learned into the Solaris. This synthesizer is A BEAST to say the least, able to emulate most any analog or digital synth with ease, although John designed it to go where synths had not yet gone as well. And not only is the sound fat, thick, and ballsy in a very analog way, but also very capable of sounding digital in a analog way as well...very hard to hear some of it's sounds and not hear analog oscillators and filters in it somewhere."

Frostwave Quad MIDI to CV Converter

I don't believe I've posted one of these before. Interesting bit of gear from Frostwave's history.

"Control up to 4 of your favourite CV-equipped, analogue synthesizers at one time with a MIDI-source computer or digital instrument with this incredibly versatile MIDI to CV / Gate conversion unit.

Info:

The Frostwave Quad MIDI-CV Plus is a rack mount four channel MIDI to analogue CV convertor, designed and manufactured in Australia. The unit operates in three different modes:

1. As a basic four channel convertor, it interprets MIDI note number, velocity, and note on/off on any four adjacent MIDI channels and produces corresponding control voltages and gate voltages to drive up to four analogue mono synths.

Or to control your FROSTWAVE RESONATOR and/or FROSTWAVE BLUERINGER V2

Switches enable each channel to be either V/Oct (Roland, Moog, Arp etc) or Hz/V (Korg MS series). Gate polarity can be either positive or S-trigger (Moog) type. Pitch bend information is interpreted on each channel via a 16-bit DAC and added to the control voltage to give smooth glides. There is a DIN sync output for early drum machines, locked to the MIDI tempo.

2. The second mode is for modular systems, with various MIDI controllers being interpreted from one channel. Eight continuous and four gated outputs are available.

3. In the third mode, the unit is used as a MIDI controller. Plugging a standard analog games joystick into the unit allows samplers etc. to be triggered by the fire buttons. Moving the joystick changes the notes and volume.

Custom Painted REMCO SOUND FX MACHINE

A bit Jackson Pollock.

"For your consideration I have an ultra rare Remco Sound FX Machine analog synthesizer from 1979. It has not been circuit bent, the only modification besides the custom paint job is the addition of a 1/4 jack making it ready to plug and play with your amp or mixer. This thing sounds amazing, It utilizes the same sound chip that was used in the Space Invaders arcade video game, but instead of playing pre-programmed sounds, it lets you gain access to the chip and change the parameters to create a wide variety of sounds. It comes from a clean smoke free home. You will receive the synth with a fresh battery installed... Heres more info I found on the internet.

'The Remco Electronic Sound FX machine was based on the Texas Instruments SN76477 analog sound effects chip. This little late-1970s integrated circuit generated square and noise waves that could be modulated to create all manner of bleeps, bloops, buzzes and auditory insanity. It's perhaps most famous as the sound chip used in the arcade version of Space Invaders.'"

New Analogue Solutions Nyborg-12 Stackable Desktop Analog Synth

via Analogue Solutions

"Nyborg is part of the Analogue Solutions range of analogue music equipment.

Nyborg is a precision electronic musical instrument.

It combines all the often needed music electronic circuitry to make a music synthesiser in one compact module.

No compromise has been made with the construction of Nyborg. Cheaper options in parts have not been used.

· Full rugged steel/aluminium case - no plastic mouldings

· Good quality smooth potentiometers, fully sealed against dust

· Good quality knobs with spun aluminium caps

· High grade double sided circuit board

· High Quality 16bit DAC for MIDI-CV conversion

· Very stable MIDI to CV

· Very stable analogue oscillators

· Hand built by humans

· True retro analogue voice and modulation circuits to give an authentic retro sound

This synth has NO memories! - Advantages;

None of the parameters or controls are quantised. So when you turn a knob, you are turning a resistor that affects a real analogue circuit.

Because each parameter is not under solid CPU control, each parameter has that tiny analogue drift that adds so much to character.

You are forced to be creative. No reliance on presets! Each time you make a sound you are being original.

Quick, easy and simple to use! WYSIWYG - no nasty menus and sub-menus to change the sound.

Spec:

2 VCOs: each with Tune, Octave, Free run, Pulse width mod, Saw wave, Square wave, Sync, plenty of modulation, CV in

Multimode VCF: 4 filter types, 12dB/octave, Telemark style filter, plenty of modulation, Q boost switch, CV control

VCA, Mixer

2 EGs: with Gate CV in

LFO, Sample and Hold, Noise, Sub Oscillator

MIDI to CV converter - use with your DAW

2 units can be bolted together - and with optional rack ears - rack mounted

2 untis can be played duophonically

4 units can be played quadphonically

note: rack ears & wood are options. Nyborg is sold in single units! Below also show Nyborg optionally paired up or with option wood / rack ears"

Synthrotek Vac-Pak CV over any variable resistor product info and demo

Published on Nov 6, 2014 synthrotek

http://store.synthrotek.com/Vac_Pak_Kit

"Have you ever wanted to add control voltage to a parameter on your synth or circuit bent toy? Now you can!

The Vac Pak is a vactrol-based control voltage to variable resistance circuit.
Connect your CV source to the input jack.
Set the Scale and Offset trim pots to dial in your optimal resistance, with a range between ~300 ohms to ~10M (all vactrols are a little different in range).
Connect the wires from J4 to your circuit to make a variable resistor.
Daisy-chain multiple Vac Paks to the same power source using the remaining connector (either J2 OR J3).
Power the Vac Pak with a 9V battery clip (wired to J2 or J3) or with your circuit's on-board voltage source (wired to J2 or J3).
An onboard 5V regulator allows the Vac Pak to be powered with 6-18V DC.
Caution: Do not exceed +10V DC on the CV input, more may burn up your vactrol!"

MODEL: EURO FORMAT CMOS PARTY BOOLEAN LOGIC MODULE

SPECS:

4HP WIDE
DEPTH: 1.6 inches
Current: +23mA, -5mA

This is a boolean logic module with all the possible outputs: AND, NAND, NOR, XOR, OR. All possible boolean combinations were made for you. All you have to do is patch a square wave or clock into A, and another one into B. Then just try out all the flavors and patch an output into a sequencer for example to see the clock timing become interesting. There are far more uses for this also. This is a great 'I remember my first logic module...'

There is also inverted logic for each A and B output.
This module is using CD4000 logic IC chips to do it's magic. This module really has no latency and can go audio rate.

Worldwide shipping is about $23.50 USD"

Analog Modular Synthesizer Plays Itself: Patch Diagram

Published on Nov 6, 2014 Karl Wenninger

"A favorite patch of mine using a syntheiszers.com Studio 66 system. There are no sequencers or keyboards used. The trick is to patch an LFO to an audio oscillator and then hard sync it to a third osc. As the LFO tries to sweep the pitch of the audio osc the hard sync forces it to jump to very musical intervals. The LFO is also sweeping the filter cutoff.

When the next set of modules is shown in the vid at 0:32 the patch is duplicated on another audio osc with its output inverted. The inverted output generates a second set of tones.

Audio signals are shown with red cables, control signals in brown.

I've only tried this on a dotcom modular and would like to hear the results of a similar patch on another modular system. Anyone?

I have links to samples using this kind of patch that you can download in the description of some of my other videos posted."

Livewire Chaos Computer, Sport Modulator, RES-4, D-LFO patch

Published on Nov 6, 2014 bigcitymusic

"We discovered a cool use for the Livewire Chaos Computer. In this video a MIDI Fighter is sending MIDI notes to the Pittsburgh MIDI2 module which is tracking the pitch of a Cwejman VCO-6 routed through the Cwejman RES-4.

A new pattern is generated on the Livewire Chaos Computer every time a MIDI note is pressed. Depending on the pattern generated, the Chaos Computer will adjust the bandwidth of the RES-4 bandpass filters. Every generated pattern on the Chaos Computer may or may not advance the Pittsburgh Sequencer which will FM the VCO-6 and determine which channel of the D-LFO will FM the RES-4 (configured via the WMD Triple BiPolar VCA).

The Toppobrillo Sport-Modulator is modulating the trip sync point of D-LFO Ch. 1 and Ch. 2, and the Chaos Computer determines what voltage to apply to the trip sync point CV input based on whether or not the binary triggers the S+H of Sport Modulator Ch. 2, which is being modulated by Sport Modulator Ch. 1."

Korg USA's Rich Formidoni gives us an overview of the microKORG XL+, including sounds unique to the '+' model and a tour of the front panel interface.

With its unmistakably unique exterior and its inimitable sound, the microKORG set the standard for analog modeling synthesizers. The year 2008 saw the introduction of the microKORG XL, which inherited the microKORG's fat and powerful sounds, while adding keyboard staples such as electric piano and CX-3 organ. And now, in the next evolutionary step, the microKORG XL+ delivers a fresh update to the sounds and look of the microKORG XL, making it an ideal compact keyboard.

Lush analog modeled synthesizer sounds that are characteristic of the microKORG have been freshly added to the microKORG XL+. In addition, for band use, the microKORG XL+ comes equipped with the piano sound from Korg's classic stage piano, the SGproX (famous for its ability to stand out in your band's mix), as well as its hard-edged grand-type electric piano. This compact package also includes sounds from the M1 and the VOX organ, vintage tape-type string and flute machines, as well as other gorgeous sounds from keyboard history."

"Soundplant 42 Released - QWERTY Keyboard Software Sampler Used From Studios to Stadiums Gets Major Update On Mac & Windows

New York, NY - November 6, 2014 - Independent developer Marcel Blum has released Soundplant 42 for Windows and Mac, the first major update since 2010 of the popular computer keyboard sound triggering program following a yearlong beta. Soundplant turns the standard QWERTY keyboard into a playable instrument with ultra low latency, allowing the instant playback of any format sound files on 72 keyboard keys with no need for extra hardware.

Soundplant's cult following continues to expand the $50 software's diversity of uses. Hollywood engineer Ed Novick used it in his 2010 Academy Award-winning sound mixing on Inception as well as in The Dark Knight Rises, Moneyball, and other films. Surf rock band Man or Astro-Man? played their sci-fi samples with Soundplant; metal band Nile used it for exotic percussion. When the foley artists of NPR's A Prairie Home Companion aren't handmaking their sound effects, they turn to Soundplant for a digital assist. The NFL's Tennessee Titans used it at LP Field stadium. Soundplant even made it to Carnegie Hall, with new music champion Paul Pinto performing on the software for the 2014 premier of composer Erin Rogers' Mother Earth. Organizations like London's Drake Music taught disabled children to create music through Soundplant's intuitive simplicity, and artists, educators, and DIYers delighted kids and adults with Soundplant-powered installations like the 2013 New York Maker Faire Editor's Choice Award-winning xylophone drum pad Nazca Beats.

Soundplant, now in its 15th year, turns an input device you've been practicing on for as long as you've been typing into a versatile multitrack playback tool, providing hours of audio at your fingertips while avoiding the need for expensive dedicated hardware. New version 42 maintains its beloved rock-solid stability, low cost, straightforward drag-and-drop sound file assignment, and powerful flexibility as standalone software, while bringing new features such as 32-bit floating point mixing and 96 kHz output for audiophile accuracy, 256 channel polyphony for rich sound design, several new lightweight realtime effects, direct output recording, and finer key press and release control. You can continue triggering sounds while using any other program with Soundplant hidden, and launch an unlimited number of Soundplant instances allowing outputting to multiple sound devices, multitrack recording, and more banks of sounds. Soundplant works identically on Windows or Mac and keymaps can be transferred across computers with ease.

Availability and pricing
Soundplant is offered as a free download at http://soundplant.org/ which includes a 25-launch trial of the registered features. In unregistered mode it is free for non-commercial use with limitations on some professional features. The registered version (USD $50, or a $40 upgrade from v.39) allows expanded sound file format support, audio output device selection, higher quality output sample rates, recording, and background triggering."

"An Electronic Digital Trumpet that is more expressive than keyboard. Created by Stephen Marshall.

You can buy this at http://www.patchmanmusic.com/mdt.html"

via this listing spotted by Kaden Harris

Only one other has been featured here back in 2009.

"I have had this for 8 years, and it has spent practically the entire time in it's comfy, shiny case. Even though this is a rare item, which I just recently learn in no longer in production (this was personally made by it's designer Steve Marshall), I must sell it as I need the money for a drum kit. Retail is $2,150 CAD. It is the coolest most precise wind controller available. Easy for trumpet players to bust out some bass, keyboard or sax lines, hey, even drums! It's extremely versatile, has incredible breath control and stunning looks.

-I have thrown in a USB to MIDI interface and a Aussie to Canadian power adaptor.
-Note that this instrument doesn't have any stock sounds. So you will need either a sound module, or a computer with some software sound such as Native Instruments Komplete for example.

Please check out the video below [above] to see it in action and read the official description.

This MIDI wind controller has been designed for trumpet players to make it as easy as possible to transition from the regular trumpet. The MDT has been in development for over 5 years to create an instrument that "feels right" when you first pick it up. Your hand position will be very similar to what you're used to, the mouthpiece is a normal trumpet mouthpiece, the valves move in the same way, and the air "resistance" is familiar.

Due to the much increased range and features that MIDI makes possible, there is a need for more controls than you find on your old trumpet. After many prototypes and much research we believe we have found the best way to incorporate these without making the MDT overly complex or "strange" to play.

Although the MDT is completely electronic, its familiar feel will enable an acoustic trumpet player to learn it quickly and start playing with the least amount of change from their trumpet skills.

Why the MDT?

The MDT lets you play any sound like anything you have ever wanted from acoustic instruments to electric guitars.
The MDT gives you 10 octaves of pitch perfect range.
The MDT lets you control your notes without having to "Buzz" your lips. This gives you hours more endurance.
The MDT can be used for alternative sounds that a musician cannot produce on their acoustic instruments. For example you can use the MDT to double on clarinet, saxaphone, guitar, or bass. An investment in a MDT wind controller pays for itself by making the musician more marketable and in-demand.
Transposition is a button push away.

Cosmetically, the unit is in beautiful condition as you can see. There may be some very minor wear and marks here and there, but nothing major at all and obviously have been looked after very well. I'm including plenty of pictures so you can see exactly how it looks.

Korg Gadget iPad App and Korg Synthepedal, House Demo by Jordan Passmore

Published on Nov 6, 2014 Jordan Passmore

iTunes: KORG Gadget - KORG INC.

"This demo highlights the Korg Gadget iPad app and the following 'Gadgets' (various instruments for use inside of the App itself): Marseille (A rompler-esqe synth doing the sustained chorused string chord), Bilbao (A sampler doing the drums using a medley of TR-707, TR-606, TR-909 and TR-808 samples) and Chicago (a monosynth doing the bassline). The whole mix is then ran through a Korg Synthepedal, a band-pass analog filter pedal from the mid 70's. The pedal has an envelope follower with a variable threshold allowing the band-pass filter (marked as "Traveller" on the Synthepedal) to open and close at certain signal levels. Since the follower adjusts both the high and low-pass elements at the same time, you get a sort of pumping effect, choking the signal reminiscent of what can be heard in a lot of early French House. The bassline is ran though the Korg decimator effect built into Chicago, giving the demo a very aliased sound. There was no outside EQ or processing involved; iPad mini into the Synthepedal, followed by my audio interface."

Pittsburgh Modular Logic Banks Demo Video

Published on Nov 6, 2014 Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers

"Logic Banks is a CMOS based logic calculator. A voltage controlled or manually switchable truth table. Two independent logic banks provide simultaneous access to six unique boolean logic operations. AND, NAND, OR, XOR, NOR, XNOR. More information is available at pittsburghmodular.com/logic-banks."

"The exciting world of Boolean logic has arrived in Pittsburgh with the fifth module of our limited edition line.

Logic Banks is a CMOS based logic calculator. A voltage controlled or manually switchable truth table. Two independent logic banks provide simultaneous access to six unique boolean logic operations. AND, NAND, OR, XOR, NOR, XNOR.

The Logic Banks module is split into two identical sections. Input values for each section can can be assigned manually using toggle switches or with the X IN and Y IN gate inputs. The gate output state of each logic operation is determined by the X and Y input values following the truth table below.

The Logic Banks is capable of single bit calculations and simple memory processes. For example, patching from the NOR output of each section into the Y Input of the opposite section creates a last used memory circuit. The OR outputs will remain lit in the section with the last high X input regardless of the current state of the X input. Similar setups provide other interesting results.

The module is available now exclusively at pittsburghmodular.com. Production of the Logic Banks was limited to 50 modules and once it is gone, it is gone."

nonlinearcircuits - 32

"This module is based on an idea from Warren Burt and originally implemented by J. Driscoll. This version has a 'bad at counting' input that makes it go a bit crazy. Btw - the module is a 32-1 or 1-32 switch, put in 32 different signals and a clock signal, then each signal is routed to the output OR put in one input signal and this will be routed to each of the 32 outputs one each clock count"
