New Studio Electronics Boomstar Eurorack Modules - 3003, 4075 & 5089 Filters & AMP / VCA Overdrive

The new Studio Electronics & Pittsburgh Modular Boomstar eurorack modules are now shipping. The filters retail for $269 each and the AMP retails for $209. See the sponsors on the right for availability. Details via Studio Electronics:

"Our 5089 ('Moog') filter has the roundest, slickest tone of all the Boomstar’s filters. Go easy on it, and round, creamy buttery flavors wrap the oscillators in earthy warmth; smash it and a meaty, satisfying overdrive, and a maximum harvest of vintage 1960s and 1970s organic‑sounding, second‑order harmonic distortion fill the plate. Every setting is balanced and bountiful. Looking for traditional R ’n B baselines and leads? Focus here on the rich saturation of this benchmark filter and its symmetrical cascades of generation-stretching timbres. All Boomstar Modular filters are hand-built in the U. S. Pick-and-Place all the way!

---

Our 3003 ('Roland Tb-303') filter has the most gentle sonic touch of its partners in the Boomstar fold, but nevertheless is quite capable of shaping precise, very dynamic tone. Whether or not this STUDIO ELECTRONICS filter is filling its traditional baseline boxing niche, driving a harsh, liquid, acid-like tone, a softer more rubber-bandy SH-101-ish presence, or out of the bass range altogether, leading the way, all is within easy reach of this surprisingly warm and versatile VCF. The 3003 can be distinctly vocal at times, especially when one is willing to put grittier, more distorted desires aside.

---

Our 4075 ('ARP') filter is the most requested of the Boomstar filter models, perhaps owing to its uniqueness. Has there ever been a better match for a square wave? It weaves dreams with “glidey,” 70s basslines, is a natural in the lead department, and feels as if a temper tantrum simmers a mere micron beneath its veneer of faux respectability. Aggressive and articulate, this fresh ARP can snap punishing kick drum sounds out as well as color with bright, edgy, stringy tones for essential arpeggiations.

---

From Designer Tim Caswell’s own hand:

The amplifier (AMP) is a 2 stage Class A discrete design using 3 pairs of hand matched transistors. Envelope is usually applied to ST1/1. ST1/2 goes thru an attenuverter and can be used for envelope or modulation. ST2/1 goes to the 2nd stage, and is typically used for volume control. ST2/2 goes thru an attenuverter and is typically used for modulation.

The AMP, the 5089, and the 3003 are Class A circuits. They draw more current from the +12 rail than from the -12 volt rail. If the system power supply is under-sized, hum or buzz may be heard. In that case, larger filter capacitors and/or a larger power transformer will be needed. The 4075 draws equally from both rails, and is more immune to hum.

Like our filters Boomstar Modular AMP modules are hand-built entirely in the U. S. of A

BOOMSTAR IN GENERAL

THE BOOMSTAR MODULAR SYSTEM realizes the seemingly inevitable eurorack sprawl of our semi-modular Boomstar desktop synth, consisting of 11 modules that dramatically open up the root level programming and sound sculpting of that lush and potent, and already flexible Boomstar sound.

What makes it tick: Let’s tick ‘em off: Class A 5089, 3003 and AMP *, rugged through-hole construction, discrete circuitry, hand-matched transistors in the filters and amplifier, multi-filtered, hand-crafted, Premium Quality Analog sound. We’d like to think we’ve learned a few things bringing the MIDIMINI, SE1-X, ATC-X, polyphonic CODE Omega synths, ModMax pedals, C2s, Pre 2, and Slate Pro Audio Dragon and Fox to market, and the air waves worldwide.

Our Boomstar Modular System’s 5089 circuit mirrors faithfully the filter design from the Minimoog—it is not a style; it’s not a type, not reminiscent of, not vintage inspired—it is the analog sound standard manufactured anew, and how we love it so. Apply the same thinking to our 4075, 3003, and SE80 filters vis-à-vis their originals, and you’ve caught our drift; the Oscillation and AMP modules also resonate with the Mini’s timeless designs, functionality, and gorgeous, gleaming sound—modernized and reimagined by the maestro Tim Caswell himself, but we’re just getting started here…"

"Refurbished Yamaha CS-50 went through tuning and electronic diagnostic. Everything is functional, all Voices work as they should. There are some signs of wear and tear but over all it looks good for age, being the synth is over 30 years old. See all pictures provided. This synth produces nice sounding instruments, even the presets sound wonderful. Very analog, warm and distinct sounding. Small brother of the CS-80 a classic synthesizer. This one does need work. Hopefully we'll see SN 3780 working again soon.  Pics of the inside below and some details via the seller:

"I took everything apart and cleaned it inside out and replaced the key bushings with the correct recommended ones and lubricated them and the plastic key pads with dow corning 7. There was ONE spring missing under a key (I might have lost it during break down and rebuild) so I just used a larger, shorter stainless steel spring (pictured).

After putting everything back together I shot a video that shows that many of the keys do the ramping/sweeping that happens possibly with the old contacts. I did clean all the contacts which seemed to help but the video shows the sweeping/ramping that still exists. I don't know if all the functions work they way they are supposed to because I've never had an analog synthesizer and I'm very new to Oscillators, filters and the like of this fascinating synth.

5 of the keys have degrading, or the tops have a little bit 'eaten' away? the 3 worst ones are pictured close up. You can still hit the key, it's just an ugly cosmetic thing..."

Synthetic Sound Labs Steiner Filter (1 MU) - Model 1021

via Synthetic Sound Labs

Updated version of the model 1020 from 2010. You'll find some demo links of the original from 2010 on site.

"The SSL 1021 Steiner Filter is a 1 MU revision & enhancement of our popular but discontinued 1020 Steiner module, which was 2 MU. All the same crazy goodness is still there, plus a hidden feature that calms it down a bit without losing that wet, slippery sound everyone loves.

The Steiner filter is a unique filter for sound shaping that synthesists have long admired for both its warmth and quirkiness. Invented by Nyle Steiner in the early 1970's, this filter was used in Nyle's Synthacon synthesizer line and has been lovingly recreated and updated as part of our modular line.

At first glance, it may appear to be another 2-pole State Variable type filter with it's high-pass (HP), band-pass (BP) & low-pass (LP) outputs. But that's where things get turned upside down. The 1021 has HP, BP & LP inputs, not outputs. These allow for all sorts of CUTOFF (center frequency) controlled "mixing" of input signals.

Due to the unique way it's inventor injected the inputs into the internal signal path, they tend to slightly interact with each other and the control voltages, making the 1021 a bit more organic and unpredictable than many other synth filters. The RESONANCE also interacts with the CUTOFF adding an additional natural touch and warmth.

But if you really crank the RESONANCE up, you can make all that warmth go out the window because at or near oscillation, the 1021 starts to squeal and complain like a school girl tantrum.

There’s a hidden feature built into the Cutoff frequency knob. When pressed in, the 1021 switches to a “warm mode” that allows more subtle control over its settings. Pull the knob and you go right back to the original crazy Steiner – but watch your speakers and ears. Dogs run for the hills in this mode!"

A.S. rs110 Multi-mode Filter FM + rs95e + Pocket Piano patch

Published on Dec 8, 2014 bigcitymusic

"Pocket Piano MIDI out is tracking the Analogue Systems rs95e oscillator through the Yarns MIDI to CV.
The Analogue Systems rs95e is frequency modulating the A.S. rs110 Multi-mode filter (MMF).

Each key pressed on the Pocket Piano causes the rs95e to FM the MMF at that frequency.

Sine wave tones from the Pocket Piano are routed to the Signal 1 input of the rs110. When the rs110 'CV-IN Vary' is set to Level 0 the Pocket Piano sine tones are audible. As the CV-IN Vary level of the rs110 is increased, the depth of FM from the rs95e increases and becomes audible.

SoftPotEvolver (a DIY ribbon controller for the DSI Evolver)

Published on Dec 8, 2014 jhvanaken

"quick demo of an Arduino-based ribbon controller for the Dave Smith Instruments Evolver

submitted as a term project for MUMT 306 under Gary Scavone, McGill University

details of this project here: http://softpotevolver.wordpress.com/"

Some details saved for the archives:

"The hardware is based on an Arduino Uno microcontroller, using SoftPot membrane potentiometers as touch sensitive inputs. It will send high time resolution control data over USB to a PC, where a Max/MSP patch which will then receive and convert that data into a variety of MIDI messages.

With only six analog input pins on the Uno board, and no pressure sensitivity on the SoftPots, the controller cannot effectively act as a MIDI keyboard replacement. However, the ability to modulate parameters other than note on/off using MIDI control change and SysEx messages make this an effective interface for live performance and sound design using digital instruments. Ribbon controllers are an intuitive means to change values over a continuous range, and may prove to be more useful than knobs and sliders for some aspects of gestural synthesis control.

In addition to a ‘general’ MIDI control Max patch, I will be focusing on developing a patch specific to the Dave Smith Instruments Desktop Evolver synthesizer. The Evolver has a well documented MIDI specification and a large number of parameters available for SysEx control. The fact that this synthesizer also has a inbuilt 4-track sequencer means that it does not rely on an external MIDI keyboard or sequencer to play musical sequences, simplifying the task of generating MIDI control messages immensely. By the end of this project I hope to use this controller to modify the pitch and timbre of looping Evolver sequences on the fly. Time permitting, I also plan to implement some more advanced features into the control of the Evolver’s sequencer such as tap tempo, or multi-finger gestures to trigger new sequences."

::vtol:: metaphase sound machine

::vtol:: metaphase sound machine from ::vtol:: on Vimeo.

"The Metaphase Sound Machine is a kind of homage to the ideas of the American physicist Nick Herbert who in the 1970s has created both Metaphase Typewriter and Quantum Metaphone (a speech synthesizer). These were some of the first attempts to put the phenomenon of quantum entanglement in practice and one of the first steps towards the creation of a quantum computer. The experimental devices, however, had not confirmed theoretical research, and Herbert’s obsession with metaphysics resulted in the publication of several of his works on the metaphysical in quantum physics, that have led to a serious loss of interest to the ideas of quantum communication. One day, in a course of his experiments, Herbert has hacked into an university computer trying to establish a contact with the spirit of illusionist Harry Houdini at the day of the centenary of his birth.

In his device Herbert in order to achieve a quantum entangled state used as a source radioactive thallium, which was controlled by the Geiger radiation counter. The time interval between pulses was chosen as conversion code. Several psychics had participated in the experiments. They tried to influence the endless stream of random anagrams arising from a typewriter or cause "the ghost voice" to be heard out of metaphone. Scientists also have conducted sessions to bring about the "spirit" of a colleague who had recently died, and who knew about this typewriter. In 1985 Herbert wrote a book about metaphysical in physics. In general, his invention and articles quite severely compromised the ideas of quantum communication in the eyes of potential researchers and by the end of the XX century no any substantial progress in this direction was observed.

The Metaphase Sound Machine is an object with 6 rotating disks. Each of the discs is equipped with acoustic sound source (a speaker) and a microphone. Each of the microphones is connected via computer and the rotary axis to the speakers on the disks. Also in the center of installation a Geiger-Mueller counter is set, that detects ionizing radiation in the surrounding area. The intervals between these particles influence rotation velocity of each of the disks. Essentially the object is an audio- and kinetic installation in which a sound is synthesized based on feedbacks, produced by microphones and speakers on rotating discs. Feedback whistles are used as triggers for more complex sound synthesis. Additional harmonic signal processing, as well as the volatility of the dynamic system, lead to the endless variations of sound. The form of the object refers to the generally accepted symbolic notation of quantum entanglement as a biphoton - crossing discs of the orbits.

"Watkins Midi Partner Mark2 in excellent condition and only used occasionally on my accordion for home use. Comes complete with Power adapter and manual. Very easy to operate.

The Midi Partner 2 is the same size as the original but has an extra line of buttons giving extra functions. The single drum button on the front has now been properly accommodated and extended to 3 drum sets which are all individually adjustable for volume..

The buttons are assignable to the footswitches like all the MIDI Partner buttons allowing foot operation during playing. (You can set quickly and easily any of the 4 footswitches to operate any of the front panel buttons).

All the functions are fully editable i.e. they can be varied to taste and the settings are stored permanently. Changing the sounds is accomplished by holding down the button of the function to be changed until the lights next to the controls start to flash. Pressing the buttons again puts you back to normal playing mode and stores the effect just like the already variable effects on the MIDI Partner.

Access to the sound editing functions is now much easier without having to switch the unit on and off, allowing you to experiment with the 128 internal sounds more easily.

Solo : This allows you to switch to a preset (by you) volume on the right-hand's sounds so you can increase the level for solos or even reduce it down to zero where this means you can effectively mute both right hand sounds together. Pitch Bend : This bends the pitch of the right hands down and the pitch slides up slowly to the original pitch - great for slide or Hawaiian guitar effects. The amount of bend and the recovery slide up time are variable. Tremolo : This gives a gently changing volume effect, the speed and depth of which can be varied - you will recognize the effect once you hear it). The Drums : 3 drum select buttons. These are an extension of the existing drum sounds on the chords and bass. There are now 3 different drum sets (with different drum/percussion sounds) all with independently settable volume levels."
