Korg M3R synthesizer + Korg RE1 rare programmer vs Darth Digital

Published on Dec 11, 2014 NoiselabCH

"KORG M3R, a somewhat stripped down M1 in a rack (not M1R). Means there are 3mb instead of 4mb sample rom, and other presets for instance. However, it sounds very similar to the M1 and it's advantage is the rare Korg RE1 programmer/controller, it's similar to the Roland PG-10 with the Roland D-10/110.

Recorded directly into DAW without any effects, dynamics, all effects heard come from the M3R itself. Played live, no sequencing, with Yamaha AN1x as controller.

The Korg M3R without the RE1 or external software editor is a real pain to program. But it's has some kind of gritty, lo-fi, digital noise sounds which are worth to explore, beside being a good M1 alternative.

No deep programming here just a short example of arranging and tweaking presets, custom sounds and combis. Unfortunatly Darth Digital isn't the better player as Dart NoiseLab ;-) As usual more looking for spacey, sci-fi like, spooky sounds than for bread and butter.

Update via Monkey in the comments: That's a IIx not a I. Most series I's were upgraded to later specs so those are incredibly rare. I doubt there are more than a few working ones in existance. I've played all versions I, II, III and 30a. The 30a didn't blow me away but the I, II, and III all sound different but equally amazing. I'd love to own any of them!

Auction description: "This classic museum piece is the first model of the very first digital sampler yet built so advanced that it's still prized today.

Create the unique sounds produced by many famous musicians with this retro instrument. Here are some descriptions and reviews:

'The Fairlight CMI is a keyboard ... which was one of the most prominent synths of the early- and mid-'80s and set the agenda for the way 'ordinary' synths would later develop. Sampling, graphic sequencers, multi-timbrality, software-based synthesis and the concept of the 'workstation' can all be traced back to this instrument.

Coming from Australia, a country not known for producing synthesizers, this was the keyboard that broke all the established rules, even down to its color!

Consisting of several large (cream-colored) parts plus loads of cables.. It has been used by The Cars, Paul McCartney Stevie Wonder, David Gilmour, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Fleetwood Mac,Jean-Michel Jarre, Heaven 17, Hardfloor, ABC, Hall & Oates, the Buggles, Supertramp, Thomas Dolby, Jon Astley, Michael Jackson, Yes, Trevor Horn (Art of Noise), Geoff Downes, Vince Clarke (Yazoo), Peter Gabriel, , Devo, Julian Lennon,, Elvis Costello, Scritti Politti, Starship, Teddy Riley, Brian Wilson, Foreigner, Madonna, Debbie Gibson, Jane Child, Eurythmics, Mike Oldfield, Prince, OMD, Steve Winwood, John Paul Jones, Queen, Keith Emerson, Alan Parsons,, B-52's, Pet Shop Boys, Soul II Soul, and Stewart Copeland. The Fairlight is a standalone Music Production Center and is rivaled only by the NED Synclavier. The Fairlight is a historical, prized piece of Vintage Digital Synthesizer and Sampler technology. It still holds up today, over twenty years later and is still a high quality and professional instrument. Uniquely useful to hardcore synth programmers, musicians, sound designers, film composers and Vintage Synth collectors.'

'An incredible sampler with 28 megabytes or more of memory! Full 73 note velocity sensitive keyboards. Complete synthesis and editing of digitally sampled sounds. Three different on-board SMPTE Sequencers and storage to various disk mediums. The processor itself is housed in a 24" module. It was also the first digital sampler to hit the market back in 1979 and has endured throughout the eighties and nineties. The sampler is the heart of the Fairlight. It's a 16-bit resolution digital sampler with variable sample-rates up to 100kHz! Original Fairlight models used two standard 8 bit 6800 processors with 32khz sampling resolution. As for sequencing, there are three sophisticated methods. There's CAPS (Composer, Arranger, Performer Sequencer), an 80-track polyphonic sequencer. The complicated MCL (Music Composition Language) is like a text-based step time sequencer. And finally the Rhythm Sequencer which functions like a classic drum-machine style sequencer.'"

"This already great sounding twin VCO analogue synthesizer benefits from having the incredible GliGli/Teesy CPU and firmware upgrade installed. This has turned the Prophet 600 into a truly amazing polysynth...it easily competes with the Prophet 5 and in my view actually sounds nicer...I've always prefered them sonically even before the upgrade..but now this synth is on a whole new level! Super fast enevelopes, super high pot resolution(no stepping), fully MIDI control..plus a whole host of new sonic possiblities!

Prophet 600 Manual, GliGli Upgrade manual and power lead all included. Comes loaded up with all the original factory presets as described in the manual!

It has also been serviced and calibrated for sale and is ready to go. No scratchy pots or leaking caps or anything else and All features work fully and have been thoroughly checked, including all foot-switch operations."

Primal Audio FM4 Synth For iPad Now Available

iTunes: FM4

Video and audio demos previously posted here. FM, of course, stands for frequency modulation. One thing I like about this app is you can clearly see the routing of the oscillators on screen when you change them, helping you understand how each FM mapping impacts the character of sound.

"Intro offer: $0.99 throughout December!

DISCLAIMER: MIDI is not working. Apple is currently reviewing an updated version that adresses this and other minor issues, which will be available next week.

FM4 is a four operator FM synthesizer for iPad. Modelled on the popular DX series from the 1980s FM4 provides the same gritty sound, with a modern interface, and without being bound by the limitations of the original units.

Every aspect of the hardware — from envelope curves to sine-table sizes and quantisation errors to digital-to-analogue converters — has been meticulously analysed, in order to recreate the raw and dirty sound of the original units.

The interface of FM4 has been carefully thought-out and is simple and intuitive, yet powerful — with every parameter being available on a single page. No menus, tabs, or jumping from page to page.

FM4 is capable of producing a multitude of sounds, ranging from punchy basses, crystal-clear bells, and lush pads, to organic textures, striking drums, and piercing leads.

Features:

- Four operators configurable in eight different routings
- Three sound engines modelled on 1980s hardware units
- Eight waveforms derived from classic FM synths
- 2x, 3x, and 4x polyphonic unison
- Tempo-syncable arpeggiator with up, down, up-down, and random patterns
- Microtuning with eight different temperaments
- Supports Inter-App Audio, background audio, and MIDI over bluetooth (support for Audiobus is coming)
- Up to 24 voices of polyphony
- Presets can be imported/exported through iTunes

All product names used are trademarks of their respective owners, and reference to these here in no way constitutes an association or affiliation with Primal Audio. All trademarks are solely used to identify the products whose sound was studied during the development of FM4."

OK Go + littleBits = Toaster Synth

Published on Dec 11, 2014 littleBits TV

littleBits synth kits on eBay

"In preparation for their most recent album release, “Hungry Ghosts,” OK Go put together a Pledge Music campaign to share their process and raise money by providing unique experiences for fans. This ranged from personal art critiques to disposable cameras filled with tour photos to a customized synthesizer.

littleBits + OK Go came up with an instrument comprised of bits from the Synth Kit [made in partnership with Korg] and the littleBits library at large. The concept was originally a remixable music box. Essentially a song from the new album that could be played back from our Arduino module. Different song sections could be played in various orders and the timbre and shape of the sounds could be manipulated by the user.

Random Bitz Shruthi Test #1

"It's alive!"

via @jkant76, via Random Bitz where you'll find more pics.

"Maker's Notes:
1. Pay close attention to the resistors' color codes, we are trapped once, (luckily) with the digital control board
2. Be careful not to cut too much or too little the pins to connect the two boards
3. Mounting LCD avoiding contacts with the digital board is the most complicated part, we put an insulation in between for safety (clipping of an anti-shock sachet)
4. To calibrate the analog filter I recommend using a spectrum analyzer (we used this one).
5. Pay attention to the choice of the power supply, ripple is your enemy.
6. To start the test tone and the internal sequencer push the dial knob for 1 second (and not the s1 button as written on the quick-start guide)

A very nice sounding & looking little box, and a lot of fun making it! :-)"

New Meta Sequencer Eurorack Module by Microbe Modular

Published on Dec 11, 2014 clone45a6

"Upcoming Meta Sequencer - a compact CV sequencer - from Microbe Modular."

via Microbe Modular, thread on Muff's

"I'm extremely pleased to announce the upcoming release of the Meta Sequencer by Microbe Modular. The Meta Sequencer is a compact CV sequencer. Step editing is intuitive and requires no menus. Advanced settings are managed using a 'flat' menu system.

Basic features:

Easy sequence editing using two rotary encoders with two corresponding numeric displays. The top encoder selects the sequence step. The bottom encoder selects the value.
Clock input and manual push-button
Reset input and manual push-button.
12 bit CV output
Three way switch to select between Playback Mode / Edit Mode / Settings Mode.
All sequence and settings information is immediately stored in non-volatile ram (technically, FRAM). You don't have to worry about saving or loading..

Advanced features include:

Selectable sequence length from 1 to 64 steps. (This might be increased to 128 steps.)
Built in clock divider, from 1 to 512.
Output quantization (optional) - 16 different musical scales available.
Sequence Randomize / Clear functions

Even more advanced features:

"Drift" settings (percentage and amount) - allows the sequence values to drift from their original values. The drift amounts do not affect the underlying sequence and are reset when the sequence is reset. Great for slowly evolving CV output.
"Slip" setting (percentage) - Sets the sequencer "slippage", which is a percentage chance of the playback sequencer NOT stepping when it normally would.
"Hold" setting (optional) - Applies a Sample & Hold to the sequence output based on a gate pattern derived from the hold setting (0-255). I'll explain this in greater detail later, but it's pretty cool.
All advanced settings can be active simultaneously.

Technical Specifications

Width: 6HP
Runs off either the +/-12V supply only, or a combination of +/-12V and 5V supplies, selectable via a jumper in the rear. Unlike the Equation Composer, no +5 volt supply is required.
Typical current requirements: 80mA.

Price and availability:

Unknown. We're building this module to be as affordable as possible. It'll probably be ready around March 2015.
Front panel design still pending "

Rare Vintage Movement MCS-2 Drum Computer for Sale

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

" Up for auction is one of the rarest drum machines out there! Made famous by the Eurythmics, Thompson Twins and Thomas Dolby, the Movement is a true "drum computer" in that all sequencing is done on a modified home PC that triggers external analog and digital drum sounds. Each sound card contains both analog synth drum type sounds (think Simmons) and gritty digital samples (like the Linn drum)

There were only about 35 of these made, and there are very few in existence these days. Of those that are still around (perhaps less than 10), most probably don't work. I am guessing there are only probably 1 or 2 of these in the US at most.

Although the software is not loading correctly on this particular unit, all drum sounds can be triggered from the front panel buttons OR they can be sequenced using an external sequencer (there are trigger inputs for all sounds). The sequencer was pretty basic anyway, so using an external sequencer is definitely the easiest way to go. This makes it totally useable in a modern studio.

This is a piece of vintage electronic equipment and so it is being sold totally "as-is" and there will be no returns. Although it is fairly robust and should work upon arrival, I make no guarantees that it will. Anyone buying it should be prepared to deal with a partly non-working unit.

Don't miss your chance to grab an extremely rare piece of music history!"

See all items from this seller here.

"Up for grabs is my custom 606. The unit was originally restored and modded by Diabolical Devices. The mod adds tone controls for Bass Drum and Snare (can provide more specifics), individual outputs, and Custom Leds (see pics). This unit was then sent to Social Entropy for Quick Silver CPU installation.

Its kinda awkward pricing custom units like this to begin with, and I am emotionally attached to this one (it's a badass), so I am open for discussion on price, but please consider the following when making offers:

Cost of stock 606, Diabolical Devices Mod/Restoration, Quicksilver OS CPU and Midi install (adds both usb and din midi to the 606, both available simultaneously and can be used in conjunction with the normal trigger outs)

For those interested, I will provide more specifics and soun1150d examples on DD mods, but to get a feel for teh QS CPU just check the videos on youtube please."
