New KORG Eurorack Module?

Well, that all depends on how you define it. This module actually comes to us from Ninstrument:

"How much fun is this? Take a new Korg Mini KaossPad 2 and customize it to fit a eurorack modular. I hope Korg is watching, because they could easily double the price of their current offering just by adding a couple of necessities and putting it behind a panel. I added attenuation knobs of the incoming left and right channels and then added an amp to both outgoing channels to boost it to modular levels. I also added a latching switch to the mic input, so you can use it as an effective 3rd channel in. Using the hold feature is like setting two pots instantly, so fellow wigglers that kinda changes the game as far as immediate performance of your effects in euroland:) Before you write this off as cheesy, look at the list of features this little guy has and compare it to any of your current eurorack modules.

Product Highlights:

Control and modulate a wide assortment of cutting-edge effects with the intuitive touchpad interface

MP3 player with microSD card slot for audio data storage/exchange; add effects to audio without additional equipment!

100 effect programs ideal for putting your own “touch” on any live performance

Virtual crossfader for transitioning between onboard media files and audio inputs. Combine with an external media player – or another Mini Kaoss Pad 2 – for DJ-style performances!

3 Program memory locations instantly recall favorite effects

Includes powerful Looper, Vinyl Break, and Ducking Compressor effects distilled from the Kaoss Pad Quad

Internal mic and external audio inputs for input flexibility

Record performances – with effects performances included – and save them to microSD

6 preset audio demo loops to experiment with right out of the box

"The Synthrotek DS-M kit just arrived and I got it all assembled. The patch is explained in the beginning of the video. Modules used: DS-M, Pittsburgh Toolbox, Synthrotek Dirt, Eowave Magnetosphere filter, Makenoise Function, and Synthrotek Echo.

CV and gate is coming from a Minibrute.

This video shows the oscillator and it's amazing strangeness. Maybe I'll make another to show it's percussive sounds.
I want like 5 DS-Ms now!"

"This is an exceedingly powerful combination of digital/analog hybrid synth, sampler engine. It's an utterly high-end piece of gear – up there with the Moog Voyager, Cwejman, and Modcan gear.

Here's some of what you get.

Incredibly warm and powerful 24db lowpass filter, and 12db multimode filter
Four incredibly versatile digital oscillators, with DX7-style Phase Modulation, variable bitdepth, all kinds of intermodulation, waveshaping, and ring modulation
Filterbank with variable frequency spread, highly controllable from the sequencer
Incredibly powerful sequencer: step sequencing, pattern sequencing,
Probably the best-sounding sampler engine you've ever heard

Not very different from Spectralis 2. Some less sample memory, different OS, a few different buttons, and different card slot compatibility."

Introducing the Nodular Desktop Synthesizer - Two Sided Analog Monophonic Semi-Modular Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Update: the maker/brand name for this synth is ndlr.synths. I created a new channel label for them. We have a new synthesizer manufacturer in town.  See second "Update" at the bottom of this post for additional notes on the design.

via the auction:
"Up for sale: one monophonic analog synthesizer. I've been making analog synthesizers for about 15 years now, but this is the first I am offering up for sale to the 'general public'. I am hoping to make a business out of selling this particular model, and you could be my very first customer.

The pictures show the same unit that is up for sale. The cabinet is made from 3/4" natural cherry boards, except for the base, which is made of 3/4" MDF. Both instrument panels are made of 1/8" thick anodized aluminum. The panels have been mechanically engraved and the engravings filled with chemically hardened black enamel paint. The whole unit measures about 18" wide by 18" deep by 12" tall. It weighs about 40 pounds. This is a very well made unit, with sturdy instrument panels that'll last a lifetime.

This synthesizer has its own +15/+10/GND/-10/-15 volt power supply and will only run on 120VAC 60Hz. It consumes about 45 watts of power at full bore.

All the modules in this synthesizer have been designed to work together seamlessly, and all use the same standards: 1 volt per octave, 10 volt peak-to-peak signal voltages, and 5 volt peak-to-peak gate, trigger, and control voltages. All patches are made among the modules via banana jacks. And a few different ways of interfacing to external modules or instruments are offered via 1/4" phone jacks.

A description of the different modules follows:

(1) ring modulator

(1) white and pink noise and random voltage source

(1) sample/track & hold

(1) voltage comparator

(2) low frequency oscillators (LFOs):

(1) headphone amplifier

Both offer voltage controlled frequency, variable offset and symmetry, and sinusoidal, triangular, and pulse wave outputs. By adjusting the speed knob, the frequency can be changed from about 20Hz down to really, really, slow. This range can be extended through voltage control.

(3) voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs):

All three offer 1 volt per octave frequency control, voltage controlled pulse width modulation, ac-coupled linear frequency control, hard sync, and sine, triangle, sawtooth, and pulse wave outputs. They'll track to within .2% over at least 8 octaves with basically negligible temperature drift once the enclosure is warmed up. And they'll operate from below audio to above audio frequencies.

In addition, the first VCO offers a frequency range switch and fine tuning.

Pics of The ARP Centaur VI Polyphonic Guitar Synthesizer System

This is a follow-up to this post from earlier today. See that post for another possible one-off ARP guitar synth (not the Avatar).

Vincent found the following two pics of the ARP Centaur VI.

Left via the VSE forums: "I think there was 2 ARP Centaur VI built. It would have cost about $20K had it hit the markets, but it was hopelessly unreliable. This is the only photo I know of: a former employee of there custom engineering dept. Has anyone seen a better picture?"

Below via gearslutz:

"Just scanned this pic out of an old guitar book my brother had - the prototype ARP Centaur VI polyphonic guitar system. Two prototypes were built but the second one is unaccounted for.

The Centaur never went to production for two reasons. One, the technology of the mid 70s wasn't advanced enough to realize a reliable pitch-to-voltage converter and they couldn't get consistent tracking from a guitar. Two, they used a brute force approach for a polyphonic system - they crammed 115 circuit boards into the thing. Very expensive approach and it ultimately proved to be unreliable - Al Pearlman did a failure analysis and concluded that the mean time between failures was two hours. It was impossible to keep it running.

The project was dropped in favor of a simpler monophonic guitar synth - the Avatar was simply an Odyssey with the keyboard system replaced by a monophonic pitch-to-voltage converter. But they still couldn't perfect the converter, the tracking from a guitar was extremely glitchy, and you had to use a extremely clean picking technique. Between the Centaur and the pitch-to-voltage converter problems, ARP sank a HUGE amount of R&D revenue into these systems.

The not-ready-for-prime-time Avatar was rushed into production. Guitar players balked at the $3000 price tag and unreliable tracking. Avatars sold poorly, dealers blew out unsold units at bargain prices, and Avatars were discontinued after one year of production. ARP never recovered the R&D investment, they dug a very deep hole in which they only recovered $1m sales revenue from a $7m R&D investment."

Two additional pics sent my way via Jimmersound. These come from Mark Vail's Vintage Synthesizers, page 53.

Published on Dec 16, 2014 sonicstate

"To coincide with the launch of the Oddty2 - the latest version of GForce Software's Arp Odyssey emulation, Dave Spiers came down to the studio to show us what it can do"

At 5:30 he mentions the ARP Centaur which was to be a polyphonic ARP Odyssey. He believes there are two in existence with one owned by Pete Townshend of The Who. He's never seen one before. I did a quick search and found only three posts mentioning the Centaur:

1977 ARP Brochure - no pic, and note it's referenced as the Centaur VI.

Modded ARP Odyssey - claims it has "the Centaur filter"

The Top 100 Synths According to the A-Z of Analog Synths - the ARP Centaur at #46.

If anyone knows where to find a pic of the Centaur, let us know. I did a quick image search and found this Poly ARP Guitar Synth on synthforum.nl (Googlish here). According to the thread this the only one out there.

Update: you'll find two pics and some info on the Centaur here.

While you don't need to know much about synthesizers to get a lot out of Phase84, experienced synth tweakers will be thrilled at the sheer variety of unique sounds that can be produced with this incredibly versatile synth.

So What's Phase84 All About?

Phase84 is what's known as a Phase Distortion synthesizer. This form of waveshaping synthesis has its roots in Casio’s brilliant CZ line of digital synthesizers from the 80s. It is designed to have the warmth of a subtractive (analog) synthesizer, yet be capable of the squelchy tones and sharp attacks of an FM synth. Phase84 in particular can create warm pads, glitchy sounds, dirty basses, filthy sweeps, screaming leads, and anything in-between.

For those familiar with the typical Moog-like (or iMini-like!) synthesis, think of the "shaper" as being synonymous with "brightness" or "filter cutoff”.

Features:
More than 100 presets.
MIDI support.
inter-App Audio support.
Advanced Keyboard section.
Expressive Perform Mode with Groove Gate.
Tabletop Ready App.
Precision Knob mode.
Phat, naturalistic unison feature for super thick pads and sweeps.
Oscillator Section: 9 Params, 2 General-Purpose Oscillators, 1 Formant Oscillator.
Mix Section: 8 Params including Delay Amount and Pulse Width.
Envelope Section: Amplitude and Shaper Envelopes. Fully visualized and interactive ADSR plus special Fade Param.
Delay/Filter Section: Stereo delay with loss modeling and a punchy overdriven analog-style filter.
3 LFOs: More flexible than your average LFO, this has 4 waveforms, optional delay and repeat count, and can go into the audible frequency range."

Soundplane using EigenD

"In this video, I take a rapid tour through some of the many features that exist within EigenD, that are useful in a live performance context, showing how they can all be controlled directly from our instruments.

This setup is the exactly the same as used on the Eigenharp Alpha, but is controlled from my Madrona Labs Soundplane with minimal changes.
(In a future video I will show how we can use EigenD to exploit a continuous surface, and the soundplane in particular)

Included:
- Controlling from the instrument
- Drummer (loop playback)
- Arranger (step sequencer ++++)
- Recorder ( per note expression recording)

theres so much more in EigenD... but they will have to wait for another day.

Tech details:
Eigen 2.1
t3d device agent listens to T3D osc
Soundplane application, broadcasting t3d osc

the t3d agent is setup to be similar to the eigenharp, so that it can be close to 100% compatible.
usually I would alter the setup to make use of the unique features, of the soundplane (see next video) , so this is for demonstration only,

Disclaimer:
The lights/menu may look 'complicated', but once you are familiar they become very logical, and you don't even have to look any more.

Future Retro Revolution with Original Box

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Revolution is a concept synthesizer with an intuitive interface that we feel most accurately represents the principles of time and music. From ancient sundials to modern day analog clocks, time has been represented as the circle, a cycle which never ends. Time itself is nothing more than our perception of the revolution of planets as they journey through their celestial orbit. It is this motion that we call time that can be measured, divided, and arranged to provide the foundation of music. This circular cyclic theme can furthermore be found throughout music in everything from song structure and repeating rhythms to the fundamentals of sound itself, being the sine wave. With this understanding we must conclude that music is cyclic and should so be represented in its natural form.

And so it is...the Revolution, a true analog monophonic synthesizer with an easy to use step-based digital sequencer, analog and DSP effects processing, and various interfacing for controlling MIDI, CV/Gate, and Din Sync devices.

Continuing in the tradition of building quality products, this unit is housed in a rugged aluminum chassis with aluminum side panels, a high contrast white on gun metal grey finish for superior viewing of controls in dark environments, and bright blue LEDs all around.

"A lovely piece of history in ridiculously good condition for a keyboard that has toured the world. (see flightcase pics) that has not been used for quite some time so it's sadly time to part company.

Was serviced prior to last use by Andy Thomas, the original UK importer of PPG equipment and was in fine voice, but as it has been off power for so long it will need you to sit down, get to know her and get her singing again - in my opinion the true joy of vintage kit!

This one is completely original, we chose not to upgrade her as we wanted to keep her true, but upgrades are really simple should you so wish, and there is an enthusiastic community globally for what is a really unique keyboard."

An extra X-Y joystick and plenty patch cords(not in pic) thrown in.

A Demon keyboard, with Fatar keys so quality there, is included, so you can plug in, cord up and away you can create until your imagination's content.
Note: some of mounting screws for Demon(Fatar)keyboard has been removed because at the time I wasn't happy how it was sitting/aligned in it's wooden frame, however it's sturdy and sit's fine and doesn't affect it's performance."

First look at Roland AIRA 7X7-TR8 Drum Machine expansion by Honeysmack

Published on Dec 16, 2014 Honeysmack

"First quick look and feel of the new 7X7 drum machine expansion for the TR8. Includes TR707 and TR727 kits along with some differently crafted TR808, TR909 and new sounds.

Not a musical statement as such. Simply updated the TR8 and started to play. Tried to go through as many of the new sounds as possible. More 7X7-TR8 demos to come.

This demo is pure TR8 no additional effects or processing. One single take no edits. Audio straight off the desk, little noisey and driven a little too hard in places, sorry for that, I got a new camera.

Thought the TR707 and TR727 might go nicely side-by-side - pictured either side of the TR8.

Thanks for watching."

Amazing Singing ALTAIR 231, russian minimoog, analog formant vowel synthesis - **Must hear!!**

Published on Dec 16, 2014 NoiselabCH

"The ALTAIR 231, a minimoog copy built in former sovietunion is a real 3-OSC synthesizer beast if not a monster! While trying out some extreme settings I found this formant vowel like sound. I thought a bandpass filter is necessary, but there's none on the ALTAIR 231 or ESTRADIN 230 (exactly same schematics) !

It's combination of OSC crossmodulation and high filter resonance. And it's just one crazy sound this great vintage analog monophonic synthesizer can produce.

No external effects or dynamics added, just pure analog synthesis!

One third of the vid is the singing ALTAIR 231, then the Abyss follows periodically, mostly squeezing, crunching, bubbling, rumbling, haunting, crashing, 1000-saws-try-to-break-the-safe-like, splashing interrupted by somewhat smoother intermezzos. Be aware of the angry bees...

Here's a vid I made a while ago using the midi-retrofit in our ALTAIR 231:

Altair 231 - Soviet Synthesizer in action - Russian Mini Moog! Amazing Estradin Synth!

Published on Mar 9, 2013

"Just a short vid, badly recorded, about the ALTAIR 231 Synthesizer (Estradin factory, Zhitomir). This one is from 1986 (maybe radioactive ;-) and has a retrofit Midi in !!
Midi-Arpeggio from Yamaha AN1X, first test with midi. This Synthesizer has similar options as the minimoog model D, it's a kind of soviet copy, however it's not a moog (I never had one, so I can't compare), but it sounds really amazing.
Same circuits as the Estradin 230, but in a more moog-like look.

Don't argue with me cause of dirty fingers, bad tweeking, shitty vid and sound-qualitiy. I don't see a lot af vid of the Altair 231 here, so a cheap one won't hurt ;-)"
