Not all features of the module were included in this short video, just some basic features.
Make sure your volume levels are set to medium, it might get loud at times. :D Cheers.

NOTE: Just a tad bit of reverb and delay were added in my DAW, other than that, it's just the module itself producing the sounds.

Roland Boutique JP-08 JU-06 JX-03 and Roland AIRA range - Demo 01 & 02

Published on Oct 31, 2015 space travel made easy

http://www.roland.com/aira
http://www.rolandus.com/promos/roland_boutique/

"Got a chance to play with the Boutique range from Roland this afternoon along with all Aira range. The Roland JP-08, Roland JU-06 and the JX-03 are all really capable little synths and great remakes of the old classics. Could not believe the sound coming through the studio monitors from these little boxes.

The Roland Boutique range was plugged into the Roland MX-1 along with all the other recent Roland Aira gear. The Roland TR-8 was providing the drums. The MX-1 has some awesome effects (and beat effects) that can be thrown into the mix either on the output or on individual channels. The Roland TB-3 is more than capable of beautiful basslines reminiscent of the old Roland TB-303.

We got a little taste of the Aira Modular pieces. Didn't get to hear the System-1m but had sends from the Roland MX-1 going through the programmable effects units the Roland Bitrazer, Roland Demora, Roland Scooper and the Roland Torcido.

Thanks to Dan from Roland for showing us everything and putting up with a number of synths being played with at the same time. His poor ears.

This video was filmed in my iPhone so apologies for the poor quality audio but it gives you a good idea of what these new Boutique boxes are capable of.

I will post more shorter videos on my Instagram account. Search for stme.music on Instagram.

Thoroughly recommend the Roland Boutique range. Well made and sound better than you would ever believe."

Meet The Alright Chronoblob

Note this is the first Alright post on the site. They've only been all good up to this point. Bahah. ;)

via Alright Devices (via Papernoise):

"Chronoblob is a digital delay module!

Unlike other delays, Chronoblob can sync to an external clock. Patch one to the SYNC input and choose a multiplier/divider for rhythmic delays. Or don't do that and just sweep TIME for traditional, continuously variable delay times. Do you!

Chronoblob's OTA-based analog FDBK circuit is CV-controllable and can be pushed up to and beyond unity for near-infinite decay or harsh saturating feedback. The guts of the feedback loop are made available to you, the discerning modular enthusiast, via the SEND and RETURN jacks. Patch in a lowpass filter for smooth, shadowy echoes, or cop two blobs and get yr pingpong on! Use the equal-power crossfading dry/wet control to dial in your mix.

Chronoblob's mode switch selects its response to delay time changes. Throw the switch up to select resampling mode and get sweeping pitch effects reminiscent of a tape loop or BBD. With the switch down, Chronoblob smoothly crossfades between delay taps for quicker, more subtle changes. Patch in a clock and sequence the TIME CV input in this mode for rhythmic ratcheting delays!

Chronoblob also uniquely features a HOLD switch and gate input to freeze the audio buffer. Punch that shit and modulate TIME for mad stutter and glitch!

Specifications:
Audio: 16bit, 48kHz
Delay: 5ms to 500ms in SHORT mode, 50ms to 2.73s in LONG mode
Power: +12V / 90mA, -12V / 30mA
Width: 10HP
Depth: 30mm (including power connector)"

Details on the New Audio Damage Neuron Eurorack Drum Module are Up

via Audio Damage

"Neuron is an FM-based all-in-one drum voice module suitable for all types of electronic music. From big Autechre-style FM hits to huge digital hardcore kicks to tight x0x snare drums, Neuron can make a broad range of percussion sounds with ease.

Starting with super fast envelopes internally curved for percussion sounds, we add a carrier wave that is a single-cycle sample straight from the PCB of a 909's kick oscillator. We then add pure sine modulation, analog-modelled soft saturation, digital distortion, and a true random-number-generator for white noise.

The result is a drum module that is both easy to use and incredibly versatile. Watch the overview video below to get an idea of what Neuron sounds like.

» Neuron is a DSP-based module that runs at 48kHz sample rate and 24 bit depth, via a high quality Cirrus-Logic codec.

» Two-operator FM synth voice tuned for percussion use.

» Carrier waveform is a single-cycle sample of a 909 kick's main oscillator, taken from the board of a real 909 via a studio-grade Mytek A/D convertor. Tunable from 20Hz to 1kHz.

» Modulator waveform is a pure sine wave, tunable from 5Hz to 1kHz.

» Two ultra-fast percussion-curved internal envelopes for pitch mod and VCA.

» Soft saturation/overdrive and distortion control for hardcore sounds.

» Internal noise generator for snare and cymbal sounds.

» Trigger input that fires the internal envelopes on a 1V edge detection. Can be triggered up to low audio rates. (Approx. 60Hz.)

» Accent and Choke inputs allow further time-based control over the output.

» Every control has a CV input that accepts +/-5V. Panel controls are sampled at low audio rates (approximately 35Hz), and have further internal lag processing for smooth parameter changes.

» USB port (on the backplane) for easy firmware updates.

» High-quality 100% Made In The USA construction, including panel-bolted 100,000-cycle BI potentiometers and custom stamped Rogan knobs.

» Power draw is 50ma from the +12V rail and 9ma from the -12V rail. This module has an on-board regulator and does not require +5V. Module width is 12HP. Module depth is 25mm.

» Neuron, like all Audio Damage hardware products, includes our lifetime unconditional warranty."

Stand Alone Hardware Coming from Audio Damage

via Analog Industries (Chris Randall of Audio Damage's blog):

"Next up, it's been no particular secret that we're working on non-Euro hardware. This turned out to be surprisingly difficult. Euro has a pretty set-in-stone standard for look and construction, and known suppliers, and you work within those parameters. When we started examining stand-alone products, well, things got hairy quick. But this summer's labor is beginning to bear fruit, and we will definitely be showing our new line of Audio Damage pedals at NAMM in January. We hope to show three different pedals, but that might be optimistic. This has proven to be a surprisingly difficult and time-consuming operation.

Interestingly, most of the difficulty and time consumption resulted from the fact that I just can't stand those Hammond boxes that most boutique pedals come in, and wanted our own folded steel chassis. It turns out that you need to know quite a bit of mechanical engineering to cause such a thing to be created, and since I had two years of mechanical engineering classes in high school in the 80s, of course I was up to the task. But lo, and furthermore hark! My brother-in-law works at Baer, which is (literally) right up the street from us, and he loaned me one of their engineers. Then the fine folks at Cutting Edge Manufacturing here in Phoenix took those drawings and tuned them up a bit, and then BLASTED SHEETS OF STEEL WITH A 4000 WATT LASER! (This shit is so fucking cool, I don't even.)

The first article is pictured above. These things are so tough you could drive a tank over them. I don't know about the rest of the thing, but the chassis will definitely survive the holocaust. The guts are digital, of course, but feature true bypass (done with relays), assignable expression pedal destinations, and true stereo where appropriate. I think the non-Euro folks are gonna be very pleased with these, and as we get a WORKFLOW in place to build stand-alone products, you'll start to see some more sophisticated shit, in addition to our ever-expanding Euro line."

Ambika - Sequencer Fun

Published on Oct 31, 2015 SYNTHWAY

"Just messing around with Ambika's internal sequencer. I've done a (poor) acid jam just with the Ambika, no external gear or MIDI devices used.

The sequence itself is pretty simple, and so are the sounds. I'm using the performance page on Ambika to control the bassline cutoff, envelope and resonance, and volume for the other parts. Everything is simple, I just had a little fun with it.

I'm sorry that drum parts were not the best. I'm going to use it extensively with my Volca Bass and create something a little more complex and musical.

I hope you enjoy it...

More Ambika videos to come."

Playing with the Bitwig 1.3 Demo

Published on Oct 31, 2015 Chris Beckstrom

"A short track– learning how Bitwig works, having a great time modulating everything. You can create an unlimited number of modulator devices that can modulate practically anything! It's the closest thing to a modular synth I've seen in a DAW. And it's cross platform!

Love the sounds.. The filters can even self-oscillate! Sounds moderately convincing.

My Mac Air laptop chocked a bit trying to record my screen and audio, probably would have made more sense to do this on my more powerful linux machine."

Monomachine, Octatrack, El Capistan techno demo - SCO

Published on Aug 17, 2014 josker

"One of the first arrangements with the Monomachine in the house. A four-to-the-floor affair, which is fairly rare for me.

It's not polished, but gives a nice demo of what to expect from the two machines.

Octatrack handles all percussion, and a few mangled samples (a pad and a pitched-down vocal sample.

The Monomachine handles all melodies, and is routed to a Thru machine in Octatrack, complete with compression.

The El Capistan does some slight effecting during the whole song, gets center stage in the end.

Recorded with Ableton live, with some compression, EQ’ing and limiting.

The Elektron machines go together so well, it's ridiculous what you can do with the two."

Sonic Memoirs of a Ghost Hunter

Follow-up to this post. Sonic Memoirs of a Ghost Hunter featuring the Evaton Technologies RF Nomad is now available. The Moog Sub 37, Moogerfoogers and Novation Ultranova were also used. Embed with link above; details below.

"Combining music with an interest in the paranormal, Sonic Memoirs is an album (the 1st in a series) that documents some of my actual paranormal investigations via synthesis.

After 20 years of ghost hunting research & field experience, I find myself rewarded with paranormal evidence found on stacks of video tapes, countless photos, as well as EVP (electronic voice phenomena) recordings. The stories I can share can fill more than a few dark & stormy evenings of friends gathered in a candlelit room. Though I'm writing a book outlining my investigations, I'm finding the process to be slower than anticipated. This being my 20 year anniversary as a ghost hunter, I decided to think more creatively, and as a musician, relay some of my experiences through music. Specifically... synthesis.

All of these tracks are created using analog and digital synthesizers. The majority of the sounds created are made using a eurorack modular synthesizer, though synths like the Moog Sub 37, and the Novation Ultranova, as well as Moogerfooger effects make appearances from time to time as well. No samples were used, and all tracks were performed in one take with no overdubs.

These are not EDM tracks. They are instead artistic soundscapes intended to capture the vibe of how some of my investigations felt while in the moment. Other tracks are intended to give you the essence of what it is like to perform some of the duties of a ghost hunter post & pre investigation.

Each track has a brief description of the investigation or investigative process found below the track outside of this playlist. After listening to the tracks, for the full intended experience, I highly recommend reading these.

The ghost phenomenon is very real. To anyone who does not believe - that's great! After all, skeptics make the best ghost hunters. All you need do is begin the journey with a serious demeanor, and review your findings thoroughly. You will reach a point where you cannot deny the mounting anomalies you encounter as simply coincidence.

Happy Halloween, and Safe Hunting - VDM"

Mutable Instruments - Elements - The Resonator

Published on Oct 30, 2015 isvisible / isinvisible

"Here's a simple patch showing some of the sounds that the Mutable Instruments 'Elements' can make with virtually no modulation. In fact the only additional modulation it's getting is on the Timbre of the Strike.
For this video I'm just purely concentrating on tweaking the Resonator side of Elements.

Here's a few patch notes:

ALM - Pamela's Workout is clocking the Mutable Instruments 'Grids', a Doepfer A-151 (switch) and the Livewire 'Chaos Computer'.
Three outputs from 'Grids' into the A-151, then clocking the 'Klee' sequencer.
The Klee is providing cv to 'Elements' v/oct input.
A quantised output from the Livewire 'Chaos Computer' is providing cv to the v/oct input of a Cylonix 'Cyclebox' which is in Percussive mode and has a steady 4x4 trigger applied to it's Sync in. The Cyclebox also has it's PH2 input modulated by an output from the Chaos Computer.
Both outputs from the Cyclebox go into both inputs of Elements.
A Binary output from the Chaos Computer is going into the gate input of Elements.
An output from the Chaos Computer into the cv control for the Strike Timbre in Elements.
Both outputs from Elements (stereo) into a mixer to record audio straight to Reaper.
And that's it.

"Introduction of my new Oberheim Matrix 6 Editor. This app is compatible with your Matrix 6 and 6R and runs under Windows and Apple Mac. The firmware of your Matrix 6 must be 2.13.

Some people say the Oberheim Matrix 6 is a very underrated synthesizer. It is not very comfortable to edit its very versatile synthesis and the powerfull matrix. But remember the Oberheim Matrix is a powerfull 6 voice analog synthesizer.

I love my mashine because of its typical Oberheim sound quality, but I hate it to edit some programs.
Now you have access to more than 90 parameters directly...with my new Oberheim Matrix 6 Editor.
For more information take a look at my website https://synthmania.de/2015/10/oberhei...

If you like this app, you can buy it for only 15,- Euros."

BWV 1067: Menuet on Analog Synthesizer

Published on Apr 25, 2013 StrangeQuarkStar

"Menuet from BWV 1067 played on an analog synthesizer I designed and built in University.
Multitracked with the same settings on both tracks, played by hand in two takes. Simple piano arrangement. No effects, straight into mixer, panned left and right hand."

Update: I reached out to StrangeQuarkStar for more info on his synth. Here's what he had to say:

"This synth is a project I did for an undergrad electronics course back in 2010. The idea was to build a completely analog synthesizer using mostly discrete components (a timer chip here and there), but with a new kind of digital parameter memory which I won't go into here just yet ;)

It's basically the classic monophonic synth architecture with two VCOs (Saw, Triangle and PWM; you can sync them), one LFO with adjustable waveshape (Ramp -> Tri -> Saw), a resonant 12dB/octave state-variable VCF (low-, band-, highpass), a VCA that's always a bit overdriven and two ADSR envelopes. The filter's envelope and the LFO can be routed to individual fine-tuning and PWM of the VCOs and the filter cutoff frequency, all at once and to different degrees.

The digital part converts MIDI to the appropriate control voltages for the individual components (note on/off, pitch bend and modulation) and is designed to keep track of all the patch parameters. The last module in the sound chain is a digital delay with a simple, adjustable analog filter. The audio signal chain stays completely analog if the delay mix is at zero.

The synth can be controlled via external MIDI or with the built-in digital 16-step sequencer and mini-keyboard on top of it.

All digital parts of the synthesizer are 100% my own design and built around Atmel ATmega processors. The more complicated analog modules (VCO, VCF, VCA) were largely adapted from designs found on birthofasynth.com, so no direct replicas of any well-known synths. We tried to keep the complexity and cost to an absolute minimum, which is why we also bought only the cheapest components we could get.

I led a team of five people and we all developed the schematics, PCB artwork and bills of material mostly from scratch. The faculty's workshop just etched the PCBs and we had to drill every single hole for all the components to solder in. The main digital board alone had over 1000 holes!

The whole thing took one semester from conception to presentation. It was the most fun I ever had in University!"

Sarabande on Prophet '08 and MS-20 mini Synthesizers (Bach French Suite BWV 813, № 2)

Published on Sep 25, 2014

"The Sarabande from J. S. Bach's second French Suite (BWV 813, № 2) played on the DSI Prophet '08 and Korg MS-20 mini analog synthesizers.

To play comfortably I connected the Prophet via MIDI to the MS-20 and turned local control off, using another keyboard (my DX-7 II's) to play the Prophet. So the top keyboard plays the MS-20 and the bottom one the Prophet '08.

Usual effects provided by the Maxon AD-900 analog delay (only on MS-20) and the Lexicon MX-300 (reverberation for both instruments).

Everything played live as you see it here; plain recording straight from my mixer/interface into Logic as 96kHz / 24 bit audio.

Full audio quality available on my SoundCloud page, as always."

ST4 tracker jam

"STU jamming on the ST4 using the onboard tracker!
http://www.tastychips.nl/st4
http://stu.atari.org"

"For those of you not in the know, the ST4 is a multi-channel synth that specializes in rhythm. It’s a hybrid digital/analog system that offers direct control over each track and has a powerful built-in step sequencer. It can do sampling with its on-board mic or from an external source. Samples can be manipulated into arbitrary waveforms, but also standard saw, square and sine waveforms may be used. Noise generators, a wealth of envelopes and per-channel multi-mode filters allow for powerful percussive sculpting.

Our goal is to make this as much a stand-alone system as possible. There’s the usual MIDI connectivity, but there’s also the built-in step sequencer on a large display with full USB keyboard and mass storage support. This makes the ST4 a unique device and as much a studio work horse as something you can take along to your friends or use on stage. The analog VCFs and VCAs give it a warm finish. It’s a Tasty Chips synth: high character and fun to use. :)"

"I bought this synth in a pawn shop in Florida. I tested it out in the shop and it sounded really good. I took it home and put it in storage for about 10 years and now it does not work. When you plug it in there is a loud hum and no notes when keys are pressed. I do not have an interest in repairing this so I am selling it for parts or as a fixer-upper project. It is "as is".

The name plate is mostly rubbed off and the knobs are kinda dinged up but the wood and the plate with the knobs on it are in good shape. The power cord has a break in the insulation but it does power up.

The serial number is 1000-1881. You can research what rev. # it is from that.

It does not have midi. The last 5 keys on the right end are a little uneven."

VOLTLIFE: Verbos HO weird vocoder

Published on Oct 28, 2015 voltlife

"By feeding a sound source into a multi-band filter, taking each band's output into an envelope follower and then using the resulting envelopes to control the Verbos Harmonic Oscillator's individual harmonics, you can create a very vague approximation to a vocoder. In most cases the filter's bands won't match the frequencies of the HO (and in my case I used a Serge Resonant EQ, which definitely doesn't), so it won't create a very intelligible vocal sound. However, the input will indeed control the timbral dynamics of the HO's output, producing very interesting tones out of complex inputs."

"This unit can take a thin digital sawtooth oscillator and transform it into a swelling chorusy string synth that would make Vangellis proud. It's based on the classic sounds of iconic string synths of the 70's such as the Solina, Roland RS505, Yamaha SS330, Korg Lamda, and so on!

If you've got a soft spot for that classic string sound, but don't have the space for any of the above mentioned beastly analog synths, this little rack unit makes a great addition to the studio. Its what convinced me to sell a few string synths and it can make my micro-brute sound like a Roland RS-09."

All knobs, sliders and keys were checked, cleaned and the synth has had a full calibration and cleanup done. There are no double triggering keys or noisy pots on this one! The unit itself is in great cosmetic condition as well, built like a tank, these were truly made to last. If you're reading this far you probably don't need a formal introduction to this bass monster. This synth IS what people would be referring to as the "Roland Sound" when talking analog synths, it has a pure rich quality and is often compared to something like the TB303. The rare diode ladder filter and oscillator combo are what gives it a unique analog punch and warmth. The patch points on the front panel and the CV IN/OUT make it a great keyboard to interface with Eurorack systems."

"So, this is my ElectroComp 101 Synthesizer, Made by Electronic Music Labs. Inc. in Vernon Connecticut. These were out on sale in 1972. I guess one of the most important things you should know is it works. There are some flaws to this particular item and i will get to that, but as far as all of the controllers and effects everything seems to be in order. I picked this up about a month ago at an auction, I didn't have any chance to meet the previous owner and find out if it had any imperfections so i just had to inspect it myself. PLEASE CHECK THE PICTURES THOROUGHLY. The first thing i noticed was light scratching on the the top and back of the wooden box and the handle was replaced by some rope and electrical tape. Then i saw that ONE LATCH (the one on the right side) was missing its top piece, Along with a small chunk of wood. _ I opened it up, and set it up and found the next defect.. The input to the main control panel from the base (keyboard panel) was not in its proper place and had been rigged up through a self made hole in the top panel. This PREVENTS The Keyboard Section to Be detached from the top control panel.>the wires are connected and the panel has to be opened up to disconnect or It obviously can be fixed and put back to its proper place... OK . So now that i got most of that out of the way, here's the good news. It's an excellent ride. I plugged the power cord into an outlet and ran the ElectroComp 101 Through my amp. The light came on when i flicked the switch. It took a while, but i came to find out that EVERY KNOB, EVERY SWITCH, EVERY KEY ON THE KEYBOARD WORKS. AND IT'S AWESOME."
