::vtol:: metaphase sound machine (video 2) from ::vtol:: on Vimeo.

"The Metaphase Sound Machine is a kind of homage to the ideas of the American physicist Nick Herbert who in the 1970s has created both Metaphase Typewriter and Quantum Metaphone (a speech synthesizer). These were some of the first attempts to put the phenomenon of quantum entanglement in practice and one of the first steps towards the creation of a quantum computer. The experimental devices, however, had not confirmed theoretical research, and Herbert’s obsession with metaphysics resulted in the publication of several of his works on the metaphysical in quantum physics, that have led to a serious loss of interest to the ideas of quantum communication. One day, in a course of his experiments, Herbert has hacked into an university computer trying to establish a contact with the spirit of illusionist Harry Houdini at the day of the centenary of his birth.

In his device Herbert in order to achieve a quantum entangled state used as a source radioactive thallium, which was controlled by the Geiger radiation counter. The time interval between pulses was chosen as conversion code. Several psychics had participated in the experiments. They tried to influence the endless stream of random anagrams arising from a typewriter or cause "the ghost voice" to be heard out of metaphone. Scientists also have conducted sessions to bring about the "spirit" of a colleague who had recently died, and who knew about this typewriter. In 1985 Herbert wrote a book about metaphysical in physics. In general, his invention and articles quite severely compromised the ideas of quantum communication in the eyes of potential researchers and by the end of the XX century no any substantial progress in this direction was observed.

The Metaphase Sound Machine is an object with 6 rotating disks. Each of the discs is equipped with acoustic sound source (a speaker) and a microphone. Each of the microphones is connected via computer and the rotary axis to the speakers on the disks. Also in the center of installation a Geiger-Mueller counter is set, that detects ionizing radiation in the surrounding area. The intervals between these particles influence rotation velocity of each of the disks. Essentially the object is an audio- and kinetic installation in which a sound is synthesized based on feedbacks, produced by microphones and speakers on rotating discs. Feedback whistles are used as triggers for more complex sound synthesis. Additional harmonic signal processing, as well as the volatility of the dynamic system, lead to the endless variations of sound. The form of the object refers to the generally accepted symbolic notation of quantum entanglement as a biphoton - crossing discs of the orbits.

Note the serial number is 282312 on the back of this one. This black & gold MK1 has an SN of 282321. It would be interesting to know what SNs the switch occurred around. Also note that both are the MK1 2800 series. ARP eventually used two four digit sections for their serial numbers, the first four were the model number and the second was the unit ID number. I'm curious when this went into effect. Just some interesting bits of synth trivia.

ARP Odyssey 2800 White Face Analog Synthesizer Restored

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Fully functional Arp Odyssey 2800 white face that's been previously restored and sounds amazing. All functions, sliders, switches, knobs, keys and jacks work flawlessly! Great condition, really clean especially the face and just a few blemishes on the rear panel.

Everything was meticulously cleaned by hand during the restoration. Sliders were dismantled, cleaned, polished, lubed, tested and only the best internals were used plus all original Arp slider caps are installed. Each switch was cleaned and all work perfectly snapping in to position. The keybed was dismantled, keys cleaned, buss bars and spring contacts polished, key heights leveled, and new key bushings installed so the action is like new and all keys trigger perfectly. The transpose switch and pitch bend rotary knob also work great. The boards were cleaned by hand as well and tantalum capacitors replaced then everything was properly calibrated. The power supply is still strong and tests perfect at stock calibration settings. About a year ago the Odyssey was taken apart when the restoration work was done and it's been working flawlessly ever since. It stays covered in a clean studio and gets regular use so I know each function is working as it should. Truly amazing sounding and a pleasure to play in it's restored state. Reluctantly selling because I have four 2800's and need other gear for the studio."

Vintage 1974 Moog Minimoog D Synthesizer Ser. No. 6327

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Some history via the seller:

"1974 Moog Minimoog Model D synthesizer Ser. # 6327 (Nov. '74)
Restored and upgraded with new power supply caps and diodes, new capacitors, Oscillator board upgrades/mods with temperature stabilization and new trimpots for improved tuning stability. (same classic warm sound, but you can actually use this on stage without having to re-tune between songs, which is a nightmare with stock old minimoogs).

This is a very special, exceptionally great sounding Minimoog that I'm hesitant about selling, but after two decades with it, I think it's time to part ways with it.

I bought this back in 1995 from a vintage analog synth dealer in California...I believe his company was called 'Analogue Modular' and I found out about it from a Keyboard magazine classified ad.
It was in pretty rough shape, several years later (around the year 2000) I had the Mini completely restored by Kurt Stewart in Arizona, and he rebuilt the cabinet, upgraded power supply, added stability mods to oscillator board as well as the pitch wheel stability improvement mod, replaced old worn caps, refinished cabinet in dark walnut, and replaced all key bushings. It was like having a brand new Minimoog. Since then, I've only taken the Mini out of it's case a few times to record on studio albums. It sounds amazing and it sounds better than any other vintage Minimoog I've come across and owned (I previously owned another Mini with an even older serial number, but it sounded thin compared to this one). Kurt Stewart, the tech, said this was one of the best sounding Minimoogs he'd ever come across. The original seller told me the exact same thing years prior."

Moog Taurus I Bass Pedals SN 1923

"Moog Taurus I bass pedals synthesizer
Model 205A
Serial No. 1923
(1978-1979)

Restored and serviced. All functions, sliders, and pedals work good.
(very recently re-calibrated and re-tuned internally)

*Includes hard case.

Synth control panel still has clear plastic film from the factory.

-Missing clear control panel window, but does have the original plastic frame and a temporary black plastic hinged cover (basically just there to block dust). You could have a new one made/cut from plexiglass / acrylic, then just add some small magnets and metal strips if you want the original control panel window restored.

This synth was recently serviced (cleaned and re-calibrated) and was refit back in 2000 by Kurt Stewart in Arizona, where he updated some of the wiring, updated the power supply, replaced the AC power cord with a new, longer one, and worked on the pedals and case. Unit is solid in the recording studio, tunes well, and sounds amazing (even better than the new Taurus 3 pedals)."

"Cosmetically- Nothing is ever mint in my opinion and this one is no exception. There are some imperfections here and there, but it still looks excellent. Please check out the photos. The wood sides have been replaced (walnut) to accommodate the midi slot. I did not want to add any irreversible holes on this classic synth. It also has some new black anaodized screws and black cup washers.

Internally- Apart from any repairs, it's been disassembled and cleaned, all potentiometers, switches, jacks, and pc boards have been cleaned, the power supply has been rebuilt (re-capped), all capacitors replaced on the cpu board and voice boards, all audio jacks replaced, the battery has been replaced, Encore midi kit installed, all hardware tightened, the keyboard/action was fully disassembled and cleaned, new bushings installed, the keyboard buss-bars and j-wires has been polished, and it's been fully calibrated. "This is a demo of the Yamaha CSY-1 organ / synthesizer. The home organ case can be deceiving; this instrument has a built in fully programmable monophonic synthesizer. The built in synthesizer is identical to the Yamaha SY-1, Yamaha's first monophonic synthesizer made in 1974. When listening to this you'll hear the signature classic synth sound that defined Yamaha throughout their more famous CS-series. The VCO, VCF, and VCA modules in this synthesizer are derived from the circuits in the famous Yamaha GX-1 which was used by musicians including Keith Emerson and bands including Led Zeppelin."

Please watch the test video. We do know that the keyboards need to have the bushings replaced. They electrically work fine but the action is not perfect and the keys sit at different heights. There is one burned out pilot light and 3 system bulbs not lighting. There are 10 missing screws that hold the modules in the rack. One of the 960 Sequential Controllers is only working through the manual step process and not auto repeating through the 8 steps. All the lights do work on it and I've been told it is an easy fix. One missing case handle, Tolex covering is 97% in perfect shape with just a few very small rip marks, one cut and a few dents.

That big fat low pitched analog sound produced by the oscillators is gut shaking to experience. Also the higher flute and brass sounding tones just sing out.
