SolidGoldFX Imperial vs Roland Aira System-1 (BURG - Semiconductor)

Published on Feb 2, 2015 ollilaboratories

"I have had the opportunity to try out some excellent pedals from SolidGoldFX - the imperial bc183 fuzz. I wanted to showcase the pedals sonical abilities on this track.. The grit and tone is excellent, is also has brilliant tonal capabilities as the tone switch provides better colouring and way to find a tone that matches your synth sound. Also, it is really hard to get that soft tone from the majority of distortion and fuzz pedals, with this it was a breeze. So i gave it a go with the Roland System-1, turned all its internal effect off and pushed the pedal on... i also used the electroman on this sound, and gave it a little beat matched delay.

Track is sort of, more melodic techno style. I hope you like it! :D

Instruments used, TR-8, System-1, KORG volca bass, volca keys, analog four.

FX used, solidgoldfx imperial, electroman (the surf rider is not used on this clip), T-resonator, KORG kaoss pad and the mooer reecho.

System-1 FX - mono out to imperial - electroman
KORG bass 1 no FX
KORG bass 2 FX - mooer reecho
KORG keys FX - t.resonator"

The Final Episode of The Packrat

via Dave

"Hello there,
It is ridiculously weird timing ending the Packrat's run so soon after its transition from print to web-only. But after sketching out no fewer than two dozen ideas for an all-new daily webcomic idea (to be announced next month), it just feels like it's time to call it quits for this monthly comic strip about a synthesizer-collecting rat. This is his ten-year anniversary and it just doesn't feel like the Packrat owes you or me anything more.

I've also decided that ten years was long enough to see if the comic could ever be more than it was. Maybe if it was a daily offering, it would have gained more traction, but I had a hard enough time coming up with monthly keyboard-related comic ideas. So the concept of daily ones seems very unrealistic to me! It would just get stale for everyone on both sides of the screen.

Meanwhile, there's $14 worth of income (and as anyone on Patreon will tell you, this is no small feat) coming from six monthly subscribers on my Patreon page. For those early adopters I do promise that my new webcomic will be entertaining and even somewhat keyboard-related. I'll reveal everything else in March. Until then, anyone possessing great faith can be an early adopter while the page is transitioning from the Packrat to the Next Big Thing. You might want to get in early, because I have a feeling that for once I've actually bottled real lightning.

That's all for now. I wish I had the ability to dedicate to two comic art projects, but there just won't be room for both of them in my brain."

I'm sad to see The Packrat go, but I'm glad it's by Dave's choice. I'm looking forward to seeing what he comes up with next. The Packrat will always have a special place in the annals of MATRIXSYNTH. The first appearance to be featured here on MATRIXSYNTH was back on October 31 (Halloween) of 2005, only three months after the launch of MATRIXSYNTH in blog form. The Packrat brought us some great times. We are going to miss you little buddy.  Rocks instead of synths?!  I guess it would be more affordable.

NANDAMONIUM double Drone with ECHO by Synthrotek DEMO Noise Machine Pedal

Look NO further than the Nandamonium Double Drone with Echo. Takes a 9V Center Negative Wall-Wart (2.1mm), has two SAG CV inputs!, ONE drone fueled 1/4″ output jack, heavy-duty metal chassis enclosure (for the goth shows), and black/white knobs. This is essentially 2 of our 4093 NAND synths and 1-PT2399 delay kit with feedback mod added. This makes space monster noises, check out the demo!"

Whispers In The Wind

Published on Feb 2, 2015 VoltageCtrlRtv

"This composition is inspired by chaos theory and the butterfly effect... the butterfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions in which a small change in one state of a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences in a later state.
I enjoy composing on the modular because the smallest change you introduce to the music system known as a synth patch can drastically transform your whole composition into a new and unexpected experience.
The song title is symbolic, the whispers symbolizes the frequencies we all generate that isn't heard by the ear but adds to the collective conscosness we are all contributing to, the wind represents the patch cables, patch cables carry electricity and frequencies to give life to the synthesizer modules, in a similar manner wind moves life sustaining air into our lungs, we literally ingest each others essence every moment we take a breath we are connected, we are one.

This composition was created with my modular synth, Arturia micro brute and Elektron machinedrum, recorded live in one take at the Akashic Siddhi Sound Temple LA."

"The AKAI S1000KB is a 16-voice 61-note keyboard sampler with velocity and aftertouch sensitivity. This one is a rarity, and is powered at 110v."

Only one other has been featured on MATRIXSYNTH here. It's fascinating from a design perspective.  First the huge size of it.  Next the curves vs the more angular design Akai is known for.  Then you have white switches reminiscent of the Roland Jupiter-8 or SCI Prophet-5 and Oberheim OB switches, a number pad and four classic Akai metal knobs. I'm curious what the inside looks like and if all that space is needed. Fascinating piece of synth keyboard history.

AniModule - XXX_OR

"This one really took me by surprise, Jesse from AniModule had told me how good it was for audio and god is it good for audio! Creates all sorts of a ring mod and FM style tones that can get really extreme without loosing the fundamental note. Combining CV through it works great and also using it for standard XOR logic with clocks and gates works well.

Encore Electronics Announces Waldorf Microwave(XT) Expansion Card

via Encore Electronics

"The Waldorf Microwave XT DSP expansion board has the same functionality as the original out-of-production board. It adds 2 DSPs and memory to the original Waldorf instruments. This increases the polyphony from 10 to 30! Installation is extremely simple. No soldering necessary. It comes with mounting hardware.

Note: This only works with original Microwave XT instruments with version 3 board. Version 1 and 2 Microwave XT boards do not have expansion ports. The version of XT mainboard is shown after you finish booting the XT/XTk by pressing the Global (Utility) button (six clicks in) until you get to the system sub-menu. If the lower left of the display reads "Board #3" you can upgrade your XT. If it says "Board 1" or "Board 2" then the XT is not expandable. Please perform this basic check to avoid any disappointment. Also your XT/XTk must be updated to OS 2.29 (or newer) before connecting the expansion."

via Encore:

"We are shipping the XT expansion now - It is tested and working $399 plus shipping, Limited QTY so act fast before we run out!!!

"Everything provided by midi implementation is there, it's nice not to have to interact with the number pad for access to all the new and truly amazing functionallity the gligli firmware provides. The membrane pad is probably one of the few parts that will be harder to replace as time goes on and also one of the most vulnerable to damage. Anywho all the new LFO shapes, assigning the wheels, changing Env response curves, and adjusting and viewing +/- values are much easier now."

"Vintage ARP ProSoloist/DGX solo synthesizer model 2720, serial number 27200535. Cosmetics near perfect. All switches, sliders, knobs work. Key wires/aftertouch assembly needs cleaning/adjustment, some notes don't trigger right away. Will run further tests on Monday. All the presets work but the Bass seems to be low in volume relative to the other presets. When you turn the unit on it takes a few seconds before the power light turns on - I've noticed this on other ARPs (I sold a Little Brother a couple of months ago that did the same thing, and I have an AXXE that works the same way)..."

Kawai SX-240 vintage analog synthesizer

"Vintage japan analog synthesizer - Kawai SX-240. It is 8 voice polysynth with good sounding DCO and nice SSM filters. So, it is big and good looking machine, with cool led display, which displays the name of patch and some other additional info. The sound itself is wide and big, and you can add onboard quality stereo chorus effect. It has stereo outs, so you can get real stereo chorus sound, or just two separate synth sounds from left and right channels, that is synth is bitimbral. You can split keyboard for two zones, to get one sound from one zone and other sound from other zone. You can even layer one sound on the other sound on all keyboard, to get some complex analog sounds in stereo, really imressive possibility. It has solid bass due to sub osc in dco section. Also there is the "brass" effect which is just ring modulation in fact, so you can extend your sonic palette here. It has onboard MIDI interface. For backup of patches there are tape interface, you can easy make bank of your patches as .wav files on your pc. Patch editing is quite easy and quick, there is one data wheel for data entry, and 4 buttons for goes from one parameter to another, and every parameter indicates by dedicated led. Also there is joystick for sound tweaking, you can point it to bend dco and\or to filter cutoff.

Synth professionally serviced, it is in fully working order, cr2032 battery with socket installed, so no problems with leaking battery in future. Cosmetically it is in exellent shape, just few dings on the sides. There is original Kawai soft bag also, i can include it if you want. AC voltage for synth is 100/110 volt."

"My favorite synth riff, played by my favorite modular synthesis system. Apart from the intro this tune is, obviously, self-generating. Therefore to prevent boredom I added an analog clock generator: let your eyes follow the pendulum and feel how your body relaxes more and more...

The System is extended with STO and MMG. Both slopes of maths are patched in the phonogene's organize, varispeed and genesize inputs. EOS clocks the Echophon, which is again clocking the Wogglebug. The Wogglebug drives rené in snake mode, snake control via maths. Everything else controlled by maths, rené and brains. And by everything I mean nearly everything..."

OSCiLLOT Modular System by Max for Cats

Published on Jan 29, 2015 max forcats

"Available at: http://www.ableton.com/en/packs
Max for Cats brings you exciting new synths and effects for Ableton Live.
For more: http://www.maxforcats.com"

"With over 100 freely patchable modules and dozens of pre-patched synths and effects, OSCiLLOT brings the near-infinite creative possibilities of modular synthesis to Ableton Live.

In-depth

OSCiLLOT is a complete modular system for Ableton Live. The more than 100 modules – including oscillators, processors, filters, mixers, modulators, amplifiers, shapers, sequencers, utilities and more – comprise the basic building blocks of many electronic instruments and effects. The good thing about working with a modular system is that it requires no programming knowledge to make your own patches; simply connect any output of any module to an input of any other module with a patchcord and you’re on your way. And while each module has a fairly narrow range of functions, patching together even just a few modules can quickly give rise to complex sounds."
