RIP Tod Dockstader

Sad news in via Atomic Shadow and Cray of Vicmod Records.

Tod Dockstader was one of the pioneers of electronic music working mainly with tape. You can find his Wikipedia page here. Wired has a great interview/write-up posted back in June of 2012.

"Born in 1932, Dockstader was part of the first wave of electronic musicians, who, before the advent of synthesizers in the early 1960s, worked with whatever hardware they could find: reel-to-reel tape machines, sine wave generators and a wild array of homemade circuits and military surplus gear. In the process, they created a universe of electronic music that still sounds unique and prescient today.

The wire recorder Dockstader used to create electronic music was a piece of used military equipment. 'A lot of this [electronic music] happened because, after the war, a lot of the stuff was available,' Dockstader said. 'Normally a person, a civilian … wouldn’t be able to get that tube, this device or that device. That fascinated me.'"

Explore some sound in his memory this weekend.

Below are a few videos in via Cray.  The first is a short on Tod Dockstader recently on Kickstarter, followed by two pieces of his work.  You can find more posts featuring Tod Dockstader here.

Everything apart from the drums is sequenced by the self-playing modular synth patch (even the MicroBrute), which is only clock-synced to the MPC.

"A fantastic synth that mixes digital and analogue. It's got the normal vco/vcf/vca plus a dco that can be used as a sub or for syncing or fm with the vco. There's an ADSR, a fuzz circuit and an lfo.

That on its own makes a pretty nice little synth, but there's also an arpeggiator and a step sequencer with glide, hold and accent a la tb303, but up to 128 steps.

There's also a really clever drum machine built in. Instead of programming steps etc, you use the controls to sculpt the pattern, choosing different densities and structures for the grungy 8-bit style drums to play.

The icing on the cake comes in the form of a patch bay on the right hand side that let's you get this linked up with a modular system.

I put it together last month to start my modular system off because it works really well as a midi to CV converter..."

How I did it - Episode 2 - Altair 8800 as a drum machine

How I did it - Episode 2 - Altair 8800 as a drum machine from Giorgio Sancristoforo on Vimeo.

"Today's show is all about drums!
The Altair8800 now works as a 8 steps drum machine, with 8 voices!

The sense switches are used as channels' ON/OFF and each one of the 8 steps programmed in the sequence outputs a byte (used as a binary number instead of a MIDI note number) which I've used inside max to trigger all the drum kit samples. As usual the interface is programmed in MaxMSP and it communicates with the Altair with a serial to usb connection.

Easy and way funny!!

see you in the next episode, and may the assembly be with you!

Nova Musik - Korg ARP Odyssey with Rich Formidoni

Published on Feb 27, 2015 Nova Musik

"Check out great deals on the ARP Odyssey at Nova Musik: http://www.novamusik.com/korg-arp-ody...

Rich Formidoni from Korg USA stopped by to talk about and play Korg's revival of the iconic ARP Odyssey analog synthesizer.

The ARP Odyssey was an analog synthesizer originally produced in 1972 by the American manufacturer ARP Instruments, Inc. that quickly garnered a faithful following among musicians. Well respected for its high value, ease to play and portability, the ARP Odyssey had undergone several improvements during its history and continued to be a long-seller until manufacturing stopped in 1981 due to economic hardships and the digital surge. Loved by a wide range of musicians as a historical classic, its sound can be heard on numerous classic songs.

Now in 2015, Korg has brought back the ARP Odyssey for today. With the advisory assistance of David Friend, the co-founder of ARP Instruments, Korg has completely reproduced the original circuitry for artists looking to recreate classic sounds and explore new ones. Together the engineers at Korg and ARP were able to nail the sound and feel of the original. Every detail has been carefully considered to stay true to the quality of the original, down to the sophisticated semi-hard case."

DETAILS
A 'modern' primitive device--with plenty of inputs, outputs, and flexibility. Even though it has only four drum sounds -- two tunable drums, a tunable "snare" drum (harder sounding than the others), and a cymbal -- control voltage inputs give great flexibility. Each of the tunable drums is made from a vacuum tube ringing bandpass filter, and can be tuned to sound from below 20 Hz to over 2 kHz. They are also tunable with external control voltages, allowing complex patterns to be built up with external CV or pulse sources. Resonance of each filter circuit is set by internal trimpots. The cymbal sound is an extremely primitive circuit, with white noise gated by a pentode tube. The cymbal's attack is knob-variable and CV variable, from a sharp click to a soft "whoosh". The four outputs mix to a single tube preamp that allows for overdriving via the mix-level controls. In keeping with the primitive nature of the soundmaking section, the pattern sequencer is extremely simple. Unlike early drumboxes, we won't subject you to preset nonsense like "waltz", "foxtrot", "swing" or the like. Instead, there is a single 8-pulse sequence with separate enable switches for each drum sound--set a toggle switch up to get the sound at that point, down for silence. Great for house, hardcore or other simple 4/4 patterns. The internal clock is settable from 60 BPM to over 1000 BPM. There is also a "roll" clock signal built-in, to generate a faster drumroll on any drum sound by pressing a button (speed is preset with an internal trimpot). If you don't like the internal sequencer, there are individual trigger inputs for each of the four sounds (the trigger pulse must be 0 to 5v, and less than 40 mS long). These trigger inputs operate in parallel with the built-in sequencer, so the D-1000's sounds may be triggered by its internal sequence and external pulses at the same time. As a bonus, the three tunable drums can also be used as tunable bandpass filters, by feeding a line audio signal to each trigger input. Ample inputs and outputs: mix output (with overdriveable tube preamp), separate outputs for each drum sound, external trigger inputs for each drum sound, and a main clock output (0-5v) for slaving external generators to the internal clock. No, it does not sound like a TR-606. It's a beast you have never seen or heard before."

MX-1 Mix Performer with Ableton Live and TR-8

Roland Airas on eBay

"The Mixer. Reimagined as an instrument.

Armed with only a few sustained sounds from Ableton Live and a TR-8, KiNK shows how the MX-1 takes electronic music performance to the next level. The latest in Roland's AIRA line, the MX-1 Mix Performer is a mixer that plays like an instrument. It brings spontaneous, hands-on control to live electronic music performance. With per-channel step based FX and playable Master FX, the MX-1 brings together your synths, drum machines, DAW tracks and more.

In this video, KiNK is streaming a handful of sustained sounds from Ableton Live directly to the MX-1. A TR-8 is connected with a single cable via AIRA Link. The MX-1 is controlling transport and master tempo of the entire setup. You'll see how KiNK uses the per-channel Beat FX to add rhythm to the sustained loops from Ableton Live and then incorporates the TR-8 in perfect sync. Using the MX-1's "External Mode" KiNK is even able to apply Ableton Live's own internal FX processing to the TR-8 hardware.

Finally, there's a mixer that's meant to be played."
