Tom Oberheim to Celebrate Launch of New Two Voice Pro at RSPE Event on April 23 - RSVPs Open

"Meet The Legend Himself - Tom Oberheim: Exclusive In-Person Event Celebrating The Launch Of The New Two Voice Pro Synthesizer

Thursday, April 23, 2015 - 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Join RSPE Audio Solutions for an intimate in-person event with legendary synthesizer designer and manufacturer Tom Oberheim.

Tom Oberheim is an audio engineer best known for designing effects processors, analog synthesizers, sequencers, and drum machines. He has been the founder of four audio electronics companies, most notably Oberheim Electronics in 1969 and was also a key figure in the development and adoption of the MIDI standard.

From it's inception until the late 80's, Oberheim created several ground-breaking products including the DS-2 (one of the first digital music sequencers), the Synthesizer Expansion Module (SEM), along with some of the first commercially available polyphonic synthesizers; The Two-voice TVS-1, Four-voice FVS-1, and Eight-voice.(which was the four voice frame with an external 4 SEM module).

In 2009, Oberheim once again began hand-building and selling very limited quantities of synthesizers with upgraded features, but with a true analog design as faithful to the sound of his originals. Until now, this required a one year wait time but...

RSPE will have very limited quantities of the Two Voice Pro available for purchase at the event.

Don't miss this opportunity to meet the creator of some of the most beloved analog synthesizers of all time!"

Ekdahl Moisturiser

via this auction

"Basically, the Ekdahl Moisturizer is a spring reverb where the springs are exposed so they can be played/hit/fiddled with. As well as being capable of creating sound in itself, you can of course also play sound through the springs like a regular spring reverb - this makes for happy-fun-time finger-modulation of the reverb on whatever audio that's going through it. On top of this there's an analog multimode filter that can be used to attenuate or exaggerate certain frequencies in the sound, this is real handy while playing the springs as you can - for instance - cut all the highs and just make thunderous doomy sounds or do the opposite; cut all the lows and make that ear piercing high frequency special love. Also, it incorporates an LFO that's internally routable to the filter and that also has some external routing-stuff. The Ekdahl Moisturizer has tons of CV / Expression pedal options on the back for even more hillarious moments. The Moisturizer is a mono unit.

The Moisturizer was developed with the help of Jason Willett (Half Japanese, Leperchaun Catering), Martin Schmidt (Matmos, Instant Coffee), Joshua Atkins (Polygons, Major Powers), mom & dad and many more."

"The very rare and classic Roland Model 102 synthesizer expander is in good sounding and fully working condition. It was recapped 2012 in Japan and also serviced 2015 in Switzerland for 100% working condition. This unit works with 220-240 Volts - for other voltages you will need a converter.

Also good optical condition but there are some signs of age, some scratches (see sample and hold section). There was a drilled hole for an now removed modification wich is now covered by an plastic cap - see Pictures below input section. Please note that Switzerland isn't part of the European Union!"

Trigger in Mod for TR-9090

via Modular Experiments

"One feature I wanted to add is a row of analog inputs so that I can trigger the voices with external signals from my modular and sequencers. I tried unsuccessfully to find a circuit that would have a low-parts count and be relatively simple, not require ICs or rare parts, etc.

Eventually, I asked a manufacturer of Euro-rack modules if he would be kind enough to share his method for developing an appropriate trigger pulse from just about any external gate signal. He did not say if this was an original design or an adaptation of some other drum synth's circuit, but either way, it is not my own and I very much appreciate his assistance."

This synt is a port form the iPad app which i believe is a first for the Reason platform. It is a fun synth to use and makes FM pretty easy to program (well as far as FM is anyway)."

XILS-lab Releases miniSyn’X

"XILS-lab launches low-cost luscious soft synth emulation of Eighties polysynth par excellence!

'I’ve just got miniSyn’X and am so excited, because the Synthex is a fantastic rarity. Thanks to XILS-lab for giving everyone the opportunity to play with it.'

- Jean-Michel Jarre (April 2015)

GRENOBLE, FRANCE: music software company XILS-lab is proud to announce availability of miniSyn’X — an authentic, cost-conscious soft synth emulation of a much-loved Eighties-vintage analogue polysynth of Italian origin that helped define the sound of an era — as of April 8...

miniSyn’X is a multi-format (AAX, AU, RTAS, VST), 32- and 64-bit polyphonic, duo-timbral virtual analogue synthesizer plug-in for Mac (OS X 10.5 and later) Windows (XP, Vista, and 7/8) that faithfully emulates the still-sought-after sound of the Synthex, a luscious, 1982-vintage, eight-voice programmable analogue polysynth independently designed by Mario Maggi and built by Italian home organ manufacturer Elka. Indeed, it was much loved by synth luminaries of the day — not least French synth wizard Jean-Michel Jarre, whose well-known Laser Harp performances still emanate exclusively from an amazing-sounding Synthex patch produced by one-time UK demonstrator/ programmer Paul Wiffen and audible in isolation in ‘Second Rendez-Vous’ on Jarre’s multi-million-copy-selling Rendez-Vouz album of 1986. Pity, then, that the Synthex did not sell in such Jarre-like quantities during a four-year, three-stage (50-, 800-, and 1,000-unit) production run, with one last post-production unit being built especially for Stevie Wonder, such was the legendary American singer-songwriter/multi- instrumentalist/record producer’s love for the future-classic instrument that initially failed to fly in the face of the-then ‘art nouveau’ digital age of dominating desirable FM synthesis from Yamaha’s considerably cheaper, MIDI-equipped DX7, and subsequent super-selling, all- singing, all-dancing digital designs from the likes of Roland (D50) and Korg (M1).

The Wolf's synth output is being routed into the Carrier input of the Moog Ring Modulator. The output of the Volca bass is routed into the audio in of the Moog Ring Modulator, so the Wolf synth is now modulating the Volca bass creating a gritty aggressive sound that changes depending of the pitch of the Wolf synth. The Wolf drums are playing the Kick, Snare, & Hat while the Volca Beats is playing the Lo & Hi Toms with a little bit of the kick layered in to give the toms more attack. Recorded & mixed in Logic."

New Patchable Roland Aira Synth & Eurorack Modules - Musikmesse Teaser Pic

Click the pic to the left for the full size shot. The image is from Roland.com. Below it is another image of the Roland System-1 for comparison. Going right to left you'll notice the knob and slider layout is almost identical between the two. Note what appears to be mounting holes along the top and bottom as well as the top row of patch points. You can see a glimpse of the actual hardware unit in this previous post.

Now as for the modules below, note what appears to be mounting holes on the corners. The obvious guess would be eurorack modules. You can see that the height of the modules match the height of the new desktop module above. If you look at the previous post, you will see that it appears to be the same height as eurorack. So what we are likely looking at is Roland officially entering the eurorack market with a System-1 with patch points that can be rack mounted into a euro case, along with four new modules. Aside from differences in the LEDs the modules appear to be identical. Considering the System 1 can transform into different synths based on what software is loaded, a good guess is we are actually looking at one module that can transform into four different modules. There aren't any visible patch points in the renders though. Are they hiding them for now? We'll find out soon enough. The Musikmesse is set to start next Wednesday April 15.
