"up close

here's a quick description of the patch:

pitches from metropolis, running through the disting to pitch it up and down by octaves and on to the shapeshifter. C major scale transposed by voltages from the first row of pressure points (second row of pressure points is patched but doing nothing). pressure points is stepped through by the sync output on metropolis, which triggers after 32 pulses have been fired (metropolis is running in fixed forward mode.

sound source is osc 1 and 2 of shapeshifter, running into the korgasmatron II which is being modulated by channels 1 (which is also doing nothing) and 4 of maths as well as a slow triangle lfo from the dixie II. from there audio goes into the uVca, which is controlled by peaks in expert envelope mode.

all audio then runs through a summing mixer setup, on to the outs and through a strymon el capistan before being recorded into the computer by way of the octatrack.

octatrack clocks the metropolis via midi and passes through audio, nothing else.

originally this patch had varied gate lengths modulated per step of the pressure points, but i decided i liked it better this way, which is why some parts of the patch aren't doing anything.

"Here's a great sounding ARP Avatar that can be used as synthesizer module over CV/Gate, the original HEX guitar pickup is no where to be found. Cosmetically the ARP shows plenty of wear in the best kind of way, perfect vintage vibe. All of the slider caps have gone missing, but replacements can be found right here on eBay.

This Avatar was just serviced on 02/16/15 by Chicago's best, Borish Electronics.

Service notes:
-Cleaned all sliders and replaced 1 slider.
-Replaced 2 CMOS IC's related to routing and switching.
-Removed some bad tantalum capacitors.
-Calibrated oscillators and power supply.
-All functions test OK."

Synth City is a new sponsor of MATRIXSYNTH! You'll find their banner on the right of the site.

"This is a very clean and lovely sounding Model D, which has been thoroughly tested. This is a later serial number, 10742, thus this synth has the more stable second revision of the oscillator board. The unit was opened to find a manufacturing date, but none was evident. The serial number and notched white pitch and mod wheels would indicate somewhere between 1978 and 1980.

Cosmetically, there is a light to moderate amount of wear to the finish on the upper left and right corners and top edge of the control panel. There is a little bit of wear to the wood on the end cheeks closest to the keyboard, but for its age this Mini is rather clean. The front panel is flawless, as are all knobs and switches. Operationally this synth is phenomenal, the key bed is quite level and plays wonderfully, and all knobs and switches function perfectly noise free. We did not have cause to have this instrument serviced, as it fired up and played great right out of the case, and to the ear sounds to be in calibration. Thanks to the second rev oscillator board, it stays well enough in tune for reliable live use night after night or for countless hours of studio wizardry.

To the best of our knowledge, this Model D spent most of its life in the rental department of Andy's Music (now SIR) as evidenced by the stenciled phone number on the bottom of the unit. As a backine unit, this synth was regularly serviced, and comes with a heavy duty flight case, likely from the 1990's. Since being sold by Andy's in 2012, it has had two owners, notably Decade Recording Studios here in Chicago. A cinch jones to 3.5mm adapter is included with the unit, as well as an original Model D manual. The manual itself is actually for the earlier revision of the Model D, as it includes the calibration procedure for the earlier oscillator board.

This Model D is ready to be back in regular use, and would be a great instrument for a player, a studio, or a collector. Please contact us for further questions and concerns."

"TOYO GAKKI Japan ULT-SOUND DS-2 ProMuzer Drum Synthesizer

Each of the two independent drum sounds has sensitivity, octave, tuning, up or down sweep depth and output level controls.
Channel 1 can be switched from Cymbal (white noise) to square or sine wave outputs, and Channel 2 from Snare to square or sine wave output.
The rear panel has quarter inch jack trigger inputs and the casing lid has built-in rubber drum pads containing piezo triggers. Once you've set the drum sounds you can close the lid and play without needing to see the controls if you prefer, and there's a stand mounting slot underneath. Alternatively you can trigger the synths from other pads such as Simmons pads, from drum triggers added to acoustic drums, or from the trigger outputs of drum machines like the Roland TR808, or from analog sequencers.
There are rear panel connections for an optional foot switch and a foot pedal (not included), which presumably mute and pitch bend the synth sounds.
Klaus Schulze did something similar with dual analog drum synths during his 1970's concerts, and the true analog sound from these modules can be absolutely window-breaking. Be careful with it, because there is no limit to how low these analog sounds can go...almost subsonic bass booms can be created with ease.

This unit is in very good condition and fully working.

You'll receive the dual drum synth and matching lid/pad unit.

You'll need a 12V DC power supply with a standard fitting (9V is probably OK too, though the label underneath specifies 15V), 2 quarter inch jack trigger cables are included......"

Stranded Thoughts of Levity

"The 259 clone is the only sound source for this. The mod oscillator is the pulsing drone that is panned left and starts off set to a triangle wave. The principle oscillator is center panned and is sequenced by the 251e. The timbre is modulated by one channel of the 281e which is controlled by a stage of the 251e. both the Symmetry and the Harmonics are modulated by separate LFOs. The principle sine wave is going in to the 285e which is being frequency modulated by the mod triangle out. This is panned right.

Salamanderanagram's Reaktor Effect Patching and Modulation using AudioCubes Topology

Published on Apr 8, 2015 Percussa

"In this video Salamanderanagram set up an effect matrix in Reaktor, in which he can change the routings as well as effect intensity simultaneously, using a few AudioCubes. When an cube detects another cube, a connection is made, and when you move the cubes closer together the modulation depth changes.

The demo is split up in two parts - in this part he shows what topology mode is and what it means to get detection, orientation and distance info all at the same time."

Additional info via Percussa:

"As you already know, the new software update for Wireless AudioCubes gives you orientation info as well as distance info when two cubes detect each other in an AudioCubes network. You can send this data via MIDI to any software or hardware instrument you can imagine, to turn routings on or off between synth or effect modules, while at the same time changing modulation depth of the routings or other parameters.

This is a very powerful idea, which is demo'ed to great effect by Salamanderanagram: he set up an effect matrix in Reaktor, in which he can change the routings as well as effect intensity simultaneously, using a few AudioCubes. When an cube detects another cube, a connection is made, and when you move the cubes closer together the modulation depth changes.

The demo is split up in two parts - in this part he shows what topology mode is and what it means to get detection, orientation and distance info all at the same time. In the next video, you will see his Reaktor patch working as he moves the AudioCubes in the network. Enjoy!"

"100% perfect and a BEAST of a synth. It can sound like a 3 thousand dollar moog or a 5 thousand dollar oberheim by changing between filters at the press of a button. Pretty easy to use as far as sound design goes with the screen it has. There are no buried submenus and other junk. This is the se-1x not the se-1 so the stepping issues you could hear when rolling off the filter have been fixed between these units perfectly, i know because i used to have a regular se1 prior :)

"Unlike many other virtual analog synths, this really sounds analog! Be warned though, this is not your do-it-all -supersynth ala Access Virus / Novation Supernova, it has only modest set of internal effects and is aimed to more experienced user. If you have already functional studio, and some experience with programming analog synths, this can be your new secret weapon. Extensive modulation matrix allows creation of sounds that evolve in a way it has been common only to wavetable synthesis and very large modular systems.

New Korg LFO Module for littleBits

Uploaded on Feb 19, 2015 littleBits Electronics

littleBits is asking people to vote for the new Korg LFO.  I'm guessing we will see it happen, but if you want to make sure and perhaps bump it to the front of their list for new modules, you might want to vote.

"Hey there! I’m Tatsuya Takahashi, chief analog engineer at Korg. The LFO or Low Frequency Oscillator module was designed alongside the littleBits Synth Kit but didn’t make it into the final kit configuration. We thought we would see if people would be interested in it, and thus have submitted it here to the bitLab!

The LFO is an oscillator module that allows you to make slow sweeping changes to sound parameters in the synth kit or with other littleBits modules. You can control the following parameters directly on the module:

-Rate/Frequency knob (speed of oscillation)
-Waveshape control knob (change the duty cycle of a pulse wave or morph a sawtooth to triangle to ramp waveform)
-Waveform selection switch (select triangle/saw or pulse waveform)

The input of the module controls the amplitude of the LFO. We’ve also included an LED on board to help show the rate of oscillation.

Need some circuit ideas? Watch the video to see the LFO in action!!"

iTunes: Diode-108 Drum Machine - Vibrant Digital Engineering, Inc.

"DIODE-108 is the drum machine you’ve been waiting for. It’s packed with a variety of built-in vintage, classic, and acoustic kits, but you can easily mix and match the samples provided to make your own custom kits. Or import wav files for even more variety. Once you’ve built your groove, DIODE-108’s drag-and-drop beat effects make it fun and easy to create beats you’ve never heard before.

FEATURES
* Drag and drop effects let you put effects on individual beats!
* Drum kits licensed from respected partners. Dubsounds, Samples From Mars, Orange Tree Samples, and 99Sounds.
* 16 drum voices with unlimited patterns that you can arrange into your own songs
* Each pattern can have its own swing and tempo multiplier
* Every voice has PER BEAT control of pan, volume, tone, pitch, decay, compression, and distortion, delay, and reverb.
* Turn NOTE MODE on for any voice and control the musical note (up or down an octave from the original pitch). Great for basslines or pitched percussion
* Wav sample import
* Mix and Match kits (easily substitute any sample in any kit). Want an 808 kick in a 909 kit? No problem.

SEQUENCER
Build your beat on a 16x16 pattern grid. 16 voices is almost twice the number of voices of some of our competitors, and it means that you can have an 808 kit with all the instruments you’re looking for (not just some of them). Set tempo and swing. Several time signatures are supported (and each pattern can have its own).

PADS
Tap your beat on our 4 by 4 array of drum pads. Record into the active pattern, or just play along.

DRUM MACHINE
Unprecedented control over your drum kit. Dial in the settings you want, mix and match samples from different kits, and save out your modified custom kits for use in any song. How much control do you have? An amazing 7 dials for each of the 16 drum voices!

FX
Diode-108’s crown jewel is its drag-and-drop beat FX. Want a reverse cowbell? Want a butcrushed tom? Want a cymbal that performs a pitch dive across several beats? Just drag and drop the effect tokens onto beats, and drag them left and right to cover any beats you like. Turn a long-lasting cymbal into a rhythmic backbone. You have to hear it to believe it! Head over to http://www.vibrantdigitalengineering.com for SoundCloud examples.

SONG
Build up a collection of named patterns from scratch, or import selected patterns from existing songs. Then drag and drop the patterns to build up a song. Each pattern can have its own swing setting and tempo multiplier if you like!

Export your songs as wav files to SoundCloud, DropBox, or iTunes, or send them through Audiobus to other apps on your iPad."

The MoCM Laboratory

Published on Apr 9, 2015 TheMOCM

MoCM (Monopolis custom made) It is a laboratory that is creating DIY prototypes of electronic- hand made constructions.
MoCM was initially created by need for artistic expression and developed as adjacent activity of Andreas Monopolis

A. Monopolis as composer and performer of electronic and computer music himself, soon caught on to the potential of both live shows and the experience of music making in terms of "instrument" use. MoCM sound solutions come as an answer to those fields which rely largely on software's algorithmic "point, scroll and click" routine; however they can easily adapt to all kinds of music genres.

By focusing on Tinkering, prototyping and junk instrument philosophy, these DIY sound modules open a whole new world of creativity and experimenting for studio recordings or live performances.

All modules are unique, incorporating a variety of materials and features. Their feel is equally old school and futuristic, elegant and edgy, fun and inspiring.

The MoCM lab is a work in progress. Complementary to the line of sound modules which can be purchased when they are found available, it welcomes interaction as well as brainstorming, and it is orientated to workshops and improvs aiming at breaking new artistic grounds."
