Live from the subtractiveLAB - Episode 10

Published on May 11, 2015 Stephen Hummel

"The tenth video in the live, in-studio performance series from subtractiveLAD / Stephen Hummel.

I recently received some of my analogue gear back from servicing (mostly internal clean-up stuff) and was excited to record with it all again. My Korg EX-800 actually came back with both the 'Moogslayer' and the filter (FM) mods - I just love how much the synth has opened up with these mods!

In this performance, I am using the Akai MPC Studio as the primary controller/sequencer/clock for most of the instruments. The solos you see me performing on the MPC are actually the Minitaur and the Minibrute being controlled via MIDI.

Synths featured:

Arturia Minibrute
DSI Evolver
Korg Monotribe
Moog Minitaur
Yamaha CS-10
Korg EX-800 (with mods)
Arturia Moog Modular (software)
Flute sample (in MPC)

Twisting knobs on the OP-1

Published on Jan 18, 2015 Mikael Björk

"Just getting to know some gear. Jamming with OP-1, Waldorf 2-Pole and an analog delay from Artec.

I have this new strategy to not have all my gear hooked up. You know, standard config way. I rather have some stuff (the Elektron gear) 'permanently' hooked. The rest of my instruments gets more temporary patching. It kinda triggers my creativity. Not working with everything at once. And in different setups.

Nord Modular FM Beat

Published on Jan 2, 2015 Mikael Björk

"The possibilities of modeling my own percussive synthesis in the Nord Modular and sequencing (and processing) it from the Octatrack, should make for nice digital sound palette.

This is my first effort. A dual osc, frequency modulated, filtered percussion generator (no not at all ‘realistic’ – I’ve got samples for that). A couple of them in different slots of the NM. Using two different outputs of the NM to feed the Octatrack so as to be able to process the audio channels differently.

Limited Edition microGranny 2.0 Granular Sampler Synthesizer from Bastil Instruments

Cool design & packaging. Note the drawing on the original box. Note the color choices for the buttons & orange knobs on the microGranny, along with the etchings on the frosted case.  The included materials also include a distinct design.  I love it when manufacturers give this level of attention to details.

via the seller: " This microGranny 2.0 from Bastil Instruments is in great condition and has only seen very light use in a smoke free home studio - practically brand new. I bought this Limited Edition version when Bastil first came out with version 2 of this granular sampler last year. It's battery operated, although you can use a power adapter (not as much fun). You can record your own samples into it quickly with the built in mic or use the supplied samples. The unit has a removable micro SD card, midi and an input and output jack on the back. I'm including the original box (with its factory applied artwork) and all that came in it. The box was dented in shipping but there was no damage to the contents whatsoever.

The microGranny is pretty easy to use once you read the manual and play around with it a bit. It's a great little tool to have kicking around the studio to inspire new ideas or just break monotony. I wish I didn't have to let it go, it's a great and unique instrument. Thanks for looking!"

"The Oscillators are the main sound sources of the instrument. VC0-2RM is equipped with seven waveforms, LFO mode, sync and waveform outputs are routed to a DC coupled ring modulator (RM). The oscillator's frequency is controlled by COARSE, TUNE knobs and FM inputs. TUNE finetunes the oscillators (± 6 semitones).

Frequency modulation (leveled FM1, FM2 and FM3 ) determinates the intensity of frequency modulation and/or pitch control. All FM inputs are carefully calibrated for 1Volt/octave sensitivity. Frequency modulation, by an audio signal, creates so called "side-bands" that consist of sum and difference of signals frequencies.
These additional frequencies do mostly have a non harmonic sound. Modulation, by low periodic waveforms, such as LFO or envelope generator creates momentary pitch shift of modulated oscillator common named vibrato (by LFO) or pitch bend (by envelope generator).

SYNC means that sync'ed oscillators frequency is tracked by the frequency of controlling oscillator;
OSC2's frequency is syncronized to OSC1's frequency. When the tuned frequency of sync-ed oscillator has the same or multiple of frequency of controlling oscillator then sync-ed oscillators waveform has no or very little "glitch" which results in a sync-ed smooth waveform (sinus waveform). The sync-ed waveforms (with additional FM modulation) are perfect for cutting edge lead sound and hard, funky basses.

PULSE WIDTH % adjusts the pulse width of the pulse wave from 5% to 95%.

WAVEFORM selects the waveform or a mix of waveforms from an oscillator. PULSE WIDTH control works also on the waveform mixes where the pulse wave is included.

Ring modulator (RM) is a classic audio effect device and due to the non harmonic character of the output signal, very useful to create metallic timbres such as bells, sweeping whistles and percussive sounds and tremolo effects (modulated by low periodic signal like a LFO). Two input signals are pre-patched to OSC1 and OSC2 outputs. Using the inputs X and Y, any other external signal can be routed directly into the ring modulator. As modulation source the ring modulator can produce a huge amount of complex waveforms both in the low and audio frequency range."

David Lilja Double Challenge

Published on May 11, 2015 John L Rice

"This is for The Muff Wigglers group on Facebook. David Lilja posed the following modular synthesizer challenge

1) #‎NoMorePatchCables
You have to use all your cables and record the result.

2) #‎PatchWithoutPower
You have to patch with the modular turned off. Knobs tweaks are allowed while patching. Power on, don't touch and simply record your take. Modules which can't be tweaked while powered down, like the soundmachines, can be allowed to tweak when powered on.

I sped up the patching time and chopped some chunks out of it because the whole thing was about 30 minutes long long."

Yazoo - Situation (Live synth cover)

Published on May 6, 2015 Synt5

"This is our take on reconstructing the influential synthpop track Situation by Yazoo.

Every synth line was played live, with no computers involved and no syncing other than our ears :). The drums were reconstructed from scratch using Reaper, and then bounced to audio and imported to the Sp404. The only sample was the notorious Alison Moyet's laughter, as we were able to remake the "Move Out" choir with our own voices. The projection is Simian Mobile Disco's Put Your Hand Together video, we thought it would somehow match the song - and it really did.

Please forgive the grainy quality, the shaky cameras and the few mistakes, we were just having fun.

From left to right, gear list and synth players were:

Roland Juno Gi - João Marcos - Synth lead #1
Sequential Sixtrak, Sp404 - Guillermo Caceres - Bass
Korg Microkorg - Tchesco Oliveira - Rhythmic synth
Yamaha An1x - George Frederick - Main synth riffs
Clavia Nord Lead 2x - Raul Guimaraes - Synth lead #2
Vocals - Zeca Filho"
